Malaysia to Stefani: Cover up or get out; Stefani to Malaysia: Okay, I’ll cover up

All I know is this: It’s going to be the most ironic performance of “Just a Girl” evah.
Some Christian group should make the same demand on her next time she’s home. Not to actually get her to cover up, but just to force her to tell them no and make her wallow in the double standard.

On her last tour she had Hot Air favorite recording “artist” Akon for an opening act. Maybe she should bring himthere and see what they say about him.

same wuith the stupid video game thing.
jummy on August 2, 2007 at 1:09 PM
They are OK with akons type of behavior. If the girl had been covered up he would have been able to control himself.
elBarto on August 2, 2007 at 1:09 PM
If a Christian country told her to cover up, she’d call term fascist pigs, as did Madonna in Toronto many years ago, and tell them to go to hell.
However, if a non-Christian country tells her to cover up, she acquiesces out of respect. The bias inherent in the Leftist brain? Christian morals are sin-based and therefore are to be mocked. Non-Christian morals are cultural-based and therefore are to be respected.
jihadwatcher on August 2, 2007 at 1:11 PM
When is she playing Riyadh?
Maybe it’s just me, but I find her very annoying.
JammieWearingFool on August 2, 2007 at 1:11 PM
How come we have to do all the heavy lifting? Let’s get some athiest group to ask her to cover up.
TexasDan on August 2, 2007 at 1:12 PM
Wow, no kidding.
4shoes on August 2, 2007 at 1:13 PM
It’s all about the bucks for these people. If christian organizations in the west really had the power to prevent them from “performing” in their typical attires, you can bet they would cover themselves up as well.
madne0 on August 2, 2007 at 1:20 PM
As nice a thought as that would be, it wouldn’t be a double standard unless, like in Malaysia, they could point to a law or rule that her performance would violate. So it wouldn’t work in your hometown. Maybe in some rural locale? What American town has both a large venue and strict morality laws (which, presumably, would be unenforced relics left on the books from prior generations)?
calbear on August 2, 2007 at 1:20 PM
Actually, we’d rather that she UNCOVER completely.

Gwen Stefani was the original lead for the LA ska/pop band No Doubt. They used to play local bar venues before attracting major lable attention.
Stefani’s sense of style has always been unique and evocative of her persona. But it wasn’t always so overtly sexual.
I imagine her label execs were quick to push her sexiness after their initial success. Once started (or tarted), there is no turning back. You can see the difference in their original CD cover art, which was not sexual at all.
Her oozing sexuality is a hallmark of her solo career and is some kind of feminist victory.
The Race Card on August 2, 2007 at 1:26 PM
branson?
jummy on August 2, 2007 at 1:27 PM
She was better when she was with No Doubt..now everything you see her in there is a rapper right along with her.
EnochCain on August 2, 2007 at 1:28 PM
What exactly does she have to cover up?
doriangrey on August 2, 2007 at 1:28 PM
I think you missed the point. An Islamic group tells her to cover up and she complies. If a Christian group was to ask her the same thing she would not do it. THAT’S the double standard. She will respect the wishes of a terror based
religioncult only.Guardian on August 2, 2007 at 1:30 PM
While it would be delicious, the irony and double standard combo thing is only effective if the majority of teenage American/European girls recognize it too.
There’s 0% chance that’s gonna happen.
ScottMcC on August 2, 2007 at 1:31 PM
Gwen Stefani without jumping and shouting? That’s like asking Gene Simmons to perform without the aid of blood or fire.
World B. Free on August 2, 2007 at 1:31 PM
Eh, if she cancelled, she’d be letting her fans down.
I’m going to withhold judgment until I see what her idea of “covered up” is. According to that article, she only has to cover her shoulders and belly (along with the usual girly bits). It’s not like she never does that.
Tanya on August 2, 2007 at 1:33 PM
Allahpundit:
Her performing that song in a burqa? We’re talking comedy gold.
JammieWearingFool
Not just you. She annoied the bejesus out of me from day 1. No Doubt’s completely manufactured “oh-so-indie” look and sound really cheezed me off. They looked like a band from a Hannah Barbera cartoon (it was all too easy to picture some producer saying, “OK, you’re a girl so you sing, you’re a skinhead so here’s a guitar, you’re black so you’re the bass player, and you’re just f—ed up looking, so obviously you’re the drummer”). “No talent, producer driven, studio manufactured hack” is the phrase I most often add to the end of her name. Now I can append it to “no talent, producer driven, studio manufactured hack in a burqa.”
crazy_legs on August 2, 2007 at 1:35 PM
Compare Gwen Stefani with Dusty Springfield who, when she was about to do a performance in South Africa in 1965, was told that she had to perform before segregated audiences. Springfield told them that if the audience was segregated she would not go on. The South African authorities refused to budge and Dusty canceled all of her South African performances and returned home.
Matt Helm on August 2, 2007 at 1:36 PM
Yeah, WBF makes a good point. The jumping part? That might be a problem.
Tanya on August 2, 2007 at 1:36 PM
I’m with peski. I could sign onto the uncover Gwen movement.
As for the topic at hand, I’m kind of dispassionate about this one. She is going there, so I’m not too concerned about her catering to the culture of which she is a guest. Now, if Muslim groups in Western Europe or the United States or Canada etc start to demand she cover up (while performing in the West) we should tell them, emphatically, to go screw.
Zetterson on August 2, 2007 at 1:36 PM
I forget: Is dressing skimpy now considered to empower woman or demean them. It changes so often, I have a hard time keeping up.
terryannonline on August 2, 2007 at 1:39 PM
I loved No Doubt.
I hate the solo Stefani. Dude…’Bananas?’
James on August 2, 2007 at 1:40 PM
Wow, I just read the lyrics to “I’m just a girl” and that is just awesome.
Zetterson on August 2, 2007 at 1:43 PM
Difference here being it was The White Men doing the discriminating. Aparthied was the “Cause of the day” back in the 70’s and 80’s that Libs could all get behind (one of the few occasions I actually agreed wth liberal celebrities, though I didn’t think they should have been inserting themselves into a sovereign nation’s business).
I don’t doubt that Gwen Stafani would boycott South Africa if Aparthied was still in effect and still the “cause-of-the-day” for Libs. The question really is would Dusty Springfield cover herself up for Muslims?

New song idea for Gwen:
infidel4life on August 2, 2007 at 1:46 PM
B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
Yeah, I miss No Doubt.
But that’s true anytime pop artists have taken a stand against laws they deem wrong or in some way backwards.
I don’t know, maybe she’d be consistent and bow to the rules any place sets up for her, but it certainly does dim the powerful message of “I’m Just a Girl.”
Forget comedy. It would finally be accurate. Feminists are constantly crying about what’s done against them here while ignore the true plight of women in other countries.
Esthier on August 2, 2007 at 1:46 PM
Oh thats an easy one. Its whatever the man doesn’t want the woman to do. If she does that, she is officially empowered. Of course that rule only applies to men of modern western culture.
Zetterson on August 2, 2007 at 1:47 PM
Of course, that’s assuming that she’d wear a skimpy outfit the pop stars of today wear in the first place.
Esthier on August 2, 2007 at 1:49 PM
Zetterson,
It’s always ‘the man’ bring us woman down.
terryannonline on August 2, 2007 at 1:51 PM
That might have been the most brilliant pun ever. I bet 90% of her appeal is from being a cutesy tootsey little tart, cuz it sure can’t be her mediocre singing voice.

If the country can’t take what you are, take your biz elsewhere, Gwen.

I can’t figure out why she would want to perform in Malaysia?
Kuala Lumpur and Penang are the best places to visit imho, but I wouldn’t want to perform there.
Kini on August 2, 2007 at 2:01 PM
Fixed. There’s a big difference between washboard chest and proportionaite curves.
I dispise the modeling world for the image in spews out. A bunch of tall stick figures that weigh the same as a 12 year old boy. I’ve heard a strange criticism, that homosexuals in the modeling business hate the female form, and that is why they only choose 5′8 skeletor ribcage women to serve as the model for women that, on average, usually don’t hit 5′5, and should in fact have breasts that nature, not a plastic surgeon, gave them. Women under 100 lbs cannot give blood. Any 5′2 woman with the same proportions as these models would be at risk for a multitide of diseases.
rant over.

I love how mudslimes choose which mohammad crap to obey. She should cover up, but who invented belly danceing? A western music concert in a mudslime country, but music is banned by the tellatubbies in their dirt patches of the world. Why in gods name would anyone want to even visit a mudslime country, never mind preform there.
Lets just bomb mecca and get the jihad started. The sooner the better, why put off the inevitable.

That was the point that I lost respect for her. I forget the name of the song that Bush had up in the charts when they first hit. Anyway it never really made any sence. Then a dude I know bought the CD, which I promptly made fun of him for. When I read the lyrics the song made some kind of sence. THEY FREAKING MIXED UP THIER OWN SONGS LINES! Anyway, I still think she’s cute, when not on stage wearing her freaked out costumes.

Covered meat. All females should realize that they, and they alone are responsible for every rape and dirty thought that has ever occurred from the beginning of time.

It was “Everything Zen.” “Just a Girl” is a retarded song. Yeah Gwen, you are a girl so you gets no rights. Like free speech, or property ownership. That song is just a whiny harpy screed of crap.
hulbstar on August 2, 2007 at 5:52 PM
Gwen Stefani and feminists will never challenge Islamic belief concerning women because the feminists simply fear that Muslims will directly confront them and not back down (indeed, the Islamo-Nazis will kill them). Most feminists are only brave when they have a man (or a court ruling) to hide behind, or they are up against someone running for office, or dealing with a feminized male.
Remember, that not one member of the National Organization of Worthless Women ever raised protest when the Taliban went around killing women who did not have a man’s permission to do anything.
And what about the killing of women who had sex before marriage? Stoned to death or victims of female “circumcision.” Again, not one word from NOW…at least as far as I know.

I have to agree. TRAGIC KINGDOM was a great cd (and you who said she had a mediocre voice…she actually has a fantastic versatile voice). But the crap that’s come since – mostly rap-related urban contemporary stuff. And of course that stupid BANANAS song. Yak!
