Quote of the day

“As you can see, there is truth on the television, because all over the world the mother-in-law is always provoking a fight,” said Muhammad Farid, a man sitting in a run-down restaurant beside the Pul-i-Khishti Mosque, his attention fixed on an Indian soap opera that had been dubbed into Dari…

“We’ve just bought the rights to ‘24,’ the American show,” [Saad Mohseni] said. “We had some concerns. Most of the bad guys are Muslims, but we did focus groups and it turns out most people didn’t care about that so long as the villains weren’t Afghans.”…

Quiz shows reward the knowledgeable: how many pounds of mushrooms did Afghanistan export last year? A contestant who answers correctly earns a free gallon of cooking oil…

Zaid Mohseni, Saad’s younger brother, said: “When we first put a man and woman on the air together, we had complaints: this isn’t legal, this isn’t Islamic, blah, blah, blah. Then the criticism softened. It was O.K. as long as they don’t talk to each other. Finally, it softened more: O.K., they can talk as long as they don’t laugh.”

Blowback

Just wait until they debut a TV show with husband and wife sleeping in separate twin beds in the same room. Scandalous.

Interesting. It seems that the Afgani people themselves veiw the Taliban as the enemy.
Considering they are the victims of most of their bombings

Im sure the Iraqi people do to. but fear drives them to want the US out. Because unlike Afganistan they havent lived under a Islamic theocracy.

Islam, the Religion of Piece(s)! What’s left after the jihadist arrives with his bomb.

Wow. Becoming a new Democratic nation sounds pretty hard. Good to know a lot of people are trying.

Once again, the blasted tv is distracting yet another populace away from the important things in life. What happened to the good old days? Why, in my generation we blew ourselves up to take out a crowd of infidels! When I was younger I had to walk three miles through the desert heat with a bomb vest on. Gone are the days.

So they’re gonna get 24, huh? Maybe this is a very good thing since their perception of Americans is shaped largely by what they see in the media. Let them try Jack Bauer on for size!

Baby steps.

Wonder if they’ll get Big Brother. That might be too much crazy

They already have Allah, what do they need with an amateur like big brother?

Funny, but true. Prosperity may bring understanding and tone down radicalism through means such as this.

“A free gallon of cooking oil”?

How many billions are we pouring into this place?

#1 Laura Petrie. Hubba, hubba.

“24″ is very popular in Morocco. There it is called Jacques Bauer. The Moroccans like to see what they perceive as Gulf Arabs and Persians getting slapped around.

Then again, “Nash Bridges” is popular there as well.

I just saw Fred Thompson playing an Air Show announcer on Iron Eagle 3.

I know this has nothing to do with this thread. I just needed to post this somewhere.

I’ve always said that porn is the great liberator. Give the Middle East some cheasy, shot-on-video pornos and then stick a fork in ‘em, they’re done.

What is cooking oil? Is it fuel or is it corn oil, etc. used as an ingredient?

Babs on August 2, 2007 at 9:10 AM

Babs, I’m assuming its either kerosene for a gas oven, or olive oil or some sort of oil for frying or just cooking in general.

They’re loosening up a bit, which is a good sign. Lets just hope the inevitable reactionary counter is a small one the Afghanis can handle.
