NYT stakes out Bloomy for five weeks to find out how he gets to work

The scoop? Instead of making an empty populist gesture by hopping aboard the subway at his local stop, he gets a chauffeured NYPD SUV ride down to 59th Street, where he makes his empty populist gesture by hopping aboard the express. The SUVs run on ethanol, too, so his green hypocrisy is minimal. Number of weeks required for this sting: five. Number of Times employees needed to report it: three. Number of sidebar graphics accompanying this very important article: two. Political damage to Bloomberg: precisely zero.

Meanwhile, a Google News search reveals that only one site has thought to ask whether Bloomy approves of his police department’s decision to charge Stanislav Shmulevich with two felony counts of book-flushing. Maybe Bill Keller can assign eight reporters to ask him that at the next press conference. It’s not as big a story as his commute, granted, but some people are interested in it.

Boy, that is some groundbreaking journalism there.

Any news picking on Bloomy is important news to me.

Alex K on August 1, 2007 at 1:41 PM

No wonder the NYT is dropping circulation.

Bad Candy on August 1, 2007 at 1:42 PM

*yawn* Hey, I want a cushytough, demanding journalistic assignment like that! Think of what these poor reporters had to go through–cooped up for five weeks in each other’s company, the endless doughnut runs, the horror of getting up that early to waddle down to see Bloomberg leave the house… this story is just oozing drama all over!

Vanceone on August 1, 2007 at 1:46 PM

For the NYT, it was either this or stalking those nude golden girl paintings. Which works better for you, AP?

Betty did look kinda hot in leather though.

lorien1973 on August 1, 2007 at 1:48 PM

Nice to see all that money they save by using stringers in other countries being put to good use underwriting three jounalists in their 5 week quest to uncover how the mayor gets to work in the morning.

Which raises the question, how many NYT journalists does it take to screw in a light bulb? And how long does that take?

taznar on August 1, 2007 at 1:50 PM

The NY Times has reason to take Bloomy down. If he runs, he is going to take far more votes away from the Dem candidate then he will for the Republican candidate. Therefore he must be destroyed.

Zetterson on August 1, 2007 at 1:51 PM

Ummm… do your ethanol research please!

It takes about 7 gallons of fuel to make 8 gallons of ethanol… (transport, creating, refining, getting it to the purchaser), and the fuel itself is about 30% less efficient…

So… if you use E-85 to MAKE E-85, it takes over NINE gallons of E-85 to make EIGHT gallons of E-85…

And its funded by $.51 per gallon of taxpayer money…

Add in that it is raising FOOD PRICES across the board (feed for animals and such) and we have a net fuel LOSS, Food, loss, raising food prices, funded at taxpayer expense…

Not very green…

Romeo13 on August 1, 2007 at 1:57 PM

Zetterson, I was thinking the same thing. Bloomy is their worst nightmare because they know what he really is-and he’s dangerous to Hill and Obama ergo he must be destroyed.

Catie96706 on August 1, 2007 at 2:03 PM

Man, what a slow news day…zzzzz.

Romeo, unfortunately perception is reality in the world of politics. In that world, ethenol = good. No need to dig any deeper then that.

Zetterson on August 1, 2007 at 2:12 PM

romeo13, I think that data is based on a lot of incorrect assumptions.

It may take me a while to find it, but the 7 gallons of fuel for 8 gallons of ethanol study used bad accounting practices (for lack of a better term). Do you remember where those numbers originated?

The carbohydrates in the corn are turned to ethanol, leaving the protein behind which can then be used as a protein supplement for feeding animals (straight corn doesn’t have enough protein). In other words, ethanol isn’t the only end product.

There is currently an overabundance of food production in the world. In fact many countries pay farmers to set aside land and notplant food crops. The world hunger problem is due to so many people not having the resources to buy even government subsidized food. Growing more corn won’t change that.

I’ll admit, at this point its hard to get what I consider to be reliable information (from either side) on the true cost effectiveness of ethanol production and how much “economy of scale” there would be if it took off. Personally, I think we’d be better off if every state in the country had built at least two more nuclear power plants in the last three decades.

Catie, bingo. I think this excessive effort to dig up dirt on the part of the NYTimes is simply evidence of that theory. And I think its important to note, as well, that they were hunting for a particular type of dirt. They were hunting for the type of dirt that makes the lefties squirm. They were hoping to catch him in the act of destroying our so very fagile planet earth.

I have a prediction. The NY Times will not come out with a hit piece designed to expose Bloomberg’s desire to raise taxes. I know I’m going out on a limb there but, what the heck, I said it.

Big Time.

Great, three less reporters reporting many less stories about how terrible the President is, how horrible conservative are and how wrong it is to be in Iraq.

right2bright on August 1, 2007 at 3:18 PM

The policeman who arrested the guy is a Muslim.

davod on August 1, 2007 at 3:33 PM

The NYT headlines are the gateway to the soul of the DNC.

He’s just another self-serving, 2nd Amendment hating, elitist, political pig, who bought his political position – and who is protected by firearms. He is the epitome of today’s politician – hypocritical and filthy rich – yes, another man/woman of the People.

To date, there are no commercial DDGS pellets available for livestock, which limits the byproduct’s use

from: http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2007/070625.htm

Byproducts may be used in the future, but are not apparently being used now…

Figures from: http://www.slate.com/id/2122961

Which are actualy worse than I knew about…

Add in that our Congress just RAISED the Miles per gallon of fleets of cars, without mentioning the 30% less energy E-85 has per gallon… and you see that they are NOT doing their homeword…

Romeo13 on August 1, 2007 at 4:53 PM

Ethanol is just another one of the liberals “feel-good” deals. It doesn’t matter whether or not it is cost efficient, practical or anything else. It just needs to sound and “feel-good” and that the end of the story. No need to actually examine the facts, because their minds are already made up.

The NYT’s further decline in significance, priceless!

Rupert soon to cut into their advertising, news, cash, ego, significance, circulation, anything that’s better than priceless.

Entelechy on August 1, 2007 at 5:34 PM

Well done AP.

Griz on August 1, 2007 at 9:25 PM

But hey fellas, ease up on the ethanol bashing. After all, if it’s true that ethanol makes things worse it can all be made better by just purchasing a few carbon offsets to ease their conscience.

… he gets a chauffeured NYPD SUV ride down to 59th Street …

Heh. The fearless green leader receives an armed escort to work while all of you mere citizens can’t carry, much less own, a handgun in NY.
