Breaking: Horrific bridge collapse in Minneapolis; Update: Steel failure? Update: Seven dead?

I’ve got nothing yet but photos, but there’s not much more to add. Estimates are 20-30 injured, eight cars and possibly one truck in the water. Standby for updates.

bridge1.jpg

Update: It happened a little after six, in the heart of rush hour. The Strib:

Ramon Houge of St. Paul, was on his way home from work at Wells Fargo and was driving on the bridge when heard a rumbling noise, saw the ground collapse and cars go down. He said cars backed up as best they could and he parked in a construction zone and was finally able to turn around and drive off the bridge. “It didn’t seem like it was real,” he said. Traffic was bumper to bumper and hundreds of people would have been involved, he said, adding that he saw kids on a bus with blood on their faces.

Sarah Fahnhorst, who lives in an apartment a block away from the bridge, heard a huge thud and then “the entire building shook. It shook the ground.”

Update: Two more screencaps.

bridge005.jpg

bridge006.jpg

Update: No word yet on a cause but Dan Riehl points to a story about “concrete rehabilitation” work that was being done on the bridge.

Update: Reader Pete L. send this shot, which he says was taken by a friend passing by on his Blackberry.

img01020.jpg

Update: Your quote of the day: “I thought it was just construction going on … it was a free fall all the way to the ground.”

Update: Oddly, enough the Times of London has the first report of fatalities. At least two dead.

Update: “According to reports from the scene, crews on the Mississippi River are no longer in rescue mode but recovery mode.” According to NBC, every last ambulance in Minneapolis has been ordered to the scene. NBC also says that work along that stretch of the bridge has been going on all summer.

Update: Three dead, at least, says CNN.

Update: Hmmm:

Bumper to bumper traffic and road construction were slowing things down and all of the sudden the bridge collapsed said a man who was in that traffic around 6:00.

That motorist told Joe Fryer that there was shaking from jack hammer and then the bridge just dropped.

Update: “According to a structural engineer who spoke with WCCO-TV’s Don Shelby, it doesn’t appear to be a concrete failure but that the steel failed.” A former NTSB commissioner is telling Sean Hannity as I write this that he’s surprised the bridge hasn’t been inspected since 2004. WCCO has now updated to say that while work has been going on for the past nine months to repair potholes and concrete, there’s been no work on the structure under the bridge.

Update: The Strib reports that no fewer than 50 cars are estimated as being in the river or on the land below the bridge.

Update: Another photo from Pete L. That used to be a train car.

img01012.jpg

Update: The Times, by way of CNN, says one of the cops on the scene saw at least seven bodies. Also, interesting:

A 2001 evaluation of the bridge, prepared for the state transportation department by the University of Minnesota Civil Engineering Department, reported that there were preliminary signs of fatigue on the steel truss section under the roadway, but no cracking. It said there was no need for the transportation department to replace the bridge because of fatigue cracking.

Update: WCCO’s got a crack page of rolling updates here. To coin a phrase, just keep scrolling.

Horrific.

Whoa! How the hell did that happen? I thought they checked bridges for stability on a regular basis, don’t they?

watching on fox now, this really really bad :(

What a horrible, frightening mess. One can only hope and pray for all involved, but….I question the timing.

Where’s rove rumsfeld al qaeda?

You’re on the way home from work…
Everyone in the office is an idiot…
You got on the road at six to try and beat the traffic…
You’re halfway across the bridge and it collapses…

Man, that’s terrible!

ScottMcC on August 1, 2007 at 8:06 PM

Fox reports another section of the bridge is in danger of collapse.

amerpundit on August 1, 2007 at 8:07 PM

Seems to me there are two basic possibilities:

1. Terrorism,

2. Some contractor is in for a heap of litigation.

Prayers to Minneapolis.

radjah shelduck on August 1, 2007 at 8:07 PM

I live in St. Paul MN and am aware of this…… the bridge was on Interstate 35W and University Ave…… Casualites, if any are very light as far as I can tell…. I keep you all posted. I missed driving in that by one half hour

MNDavenotPC on August 1, 2007 at 8:09 PM

Not to sound too alarmist but……..

Thirty-year old bridges in America do not spontaneously collapse. I hope that it turns out to be metal fatigue or some other cause but this has all the signs of being a terrorist trial run in a city with a large Muslim population. Just saying. Too early for speculation but definitely time for prayers for those involved in this horrific scene and their families.

highhopes on August 1, 2007 at 8:09 PM

Probably should check on my parents and make sure everyone is ok.

Any idea what part of I35 this is? 35E? 35W? North or South of town?

How horrific…

Prayers up

Tru2my2 on August 1, 2007 at 8:15 PM

Officials announced earlier today that the imminent bridge collapse would not be related to terrorism.

RedWinged Blackbird on August 1, 2007 at 8:15 PM

Stop the terrorist diatribe….you don’t know a thing! And I hate the Islamofascists as much, if not more than anyone

Doesn,t look good.

canopfor on August 1, 2007 at 8:19 PM

DHS says it does not seem to be terrorism-related.

amerpundit on August 1, 2007 at 8:20 PM

The far away picture it doesn’t look too bad. Close up and you see semis and tons of concrete falling on people’s heads. Oh, I hope people make it out alive.

Blake on August 1, 2007 at 8:20 PM

I’m on local Channel 4 here in Mpls…. wouldn’t trust Fox to do this story true justice any more than I would CNN

MNDavenotPC on August 1, 2007 at 8:21 PM

Fox reports road signs have crushed cars. A school bus was on the bridge at the time, but all children were safely evacuated.

Bridge tilted left then twisted and dropped… anybody who understands ordinance would know this isn’t a terrorist act

MNDavenotPC on August 1, 2007 at 8:25 PM

I hope this is just an unfortunate tragedy.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims.

Kowboy on August 1, 2007 at 8:26 PM

What a nightmare!

I work in Boston and I live in fear of tunnels or bridges collapsing every day, especially when I am riding the subway!

kiakjones on August 1, 2007 at 8:27 PM

BTW we’ve had very hot weather here with no rain… and with the high traffic….. My God who knows

MNDavenotPC on August 1, 2007 at 8:27 PM

One witness told the local Fox affiliate that right before the collapse, she saw parts “blowing up and blowing out”. Local Fox affiliate speculates it may have been construction equipment.

That’s very common when concrete expands then the stress makes it blow up. Happens all the time here in summer at much less serious levels, of course. This will show the character of the people here.

Spirit of 1776 on August 1, 2007 at 8:38 PM

well that didn’t take long… the lefty trolls are already blaming the not-high-enough federal income tax for “our failing infrastructure.” The bodies haven’t even been accounted for and it’s already political. “I blame Bush.”

Here’s what he said…”This is what happens when you have a federal government run by people that don’t believe in government.”

If we would go back to a 39% income tax on the amount earned over $500,000, we would have the money to restore our infrastructure.

Reminds me of the bridge that collapsed here where I live. Of course I wasn’t born yet, but it was a far worse disaster.
Click here for more info on that.

Vaporman87 on August 1, 2007 at 8:47 PM

I’m in Mpls., and home safe. It has been frakking hot here for weeks with no rain, plus the bridge has been under construction for months. My guess is structual failure, not terrorism. The collapse was at 35W and University. It is a nightmare.

debi118 on August 1, 2007 at 8:48 PM

I remember when they were building that bridge and it collapsed during the construction phase. Something definitely wrong. Reminds me of the Big Dig in Boston. Questionable construction and engineering practices.

cjs1943 on August 1, 2007 at 8:48 PM

Oh yeah, The Mothman Prophecies centered on that bridge collapse. Forgot to add that. And no, there is no Mothman.

Vaporman87 on August 1, 2007 at 8:49 PM

At least 3 people are confirmed dead, according to Fox.

amerpundit on August 1, 2007 at 8:51 PM

Horrible, most likey concrete expansion due to the high heat. The don’t put in as many expansion joints up north as they do down here to allow for that. Coupled with the construction going on, that is my bet.

conservnut on August 1, 2007 at 8:51 PM

One eyewitness reports at least 7 dead.

amerpundit on August 1, 2007 at 8:53 PM

The woman from the Fox Station in Minneapolis said to Shep she didn’t remember the last time work was done on the 35W.

I found this.

kiakjones on August 1, 2007 at 8:53 PM

The divers are already in the water, can,t wait
for the slow response comments.
There not sure how many cars are in the water,
do they not have bridge cams.

The democrat which is her state i think,
came on around 7:50pm talking to Paula Zahn.

canopfor on August 1, 2007 at 8:54 PM

Wow. Shep just mentioned the Silver Bridge Collapse. I beat him to it here. Suprised he didn’t mention that the Mothman did it. LOL

Vaporman87 on August 1, 2007 at 8:54 PM

I think debi118 is right. I live by St Paul, it’s a semi old bride, they are resurfacing it, doing concrete work and it’s a suspension bridge. Do the math.

oakpack on August 1, 2007 at 8:54 PM

I can hear the thunder, so a small storm should be there soon.

oakpack on August 1, 2007 at 8:57 PM

Interesting article April 1957

franksalterego on August 1, 2007 at 8:58 PM

Wierd. The year that bridge in Minnesota was built was the year the Silver Bridge collapsed. 1967.

Vaporman87 on August 1, 2007 at 9:02 PM

The storm is here oakpack, no rain in weeks, and NOW it comes, just in time to hamper rescue efforts. Maybe it will help with the fires tho.

debi118 on August 1, 2007 at 9:03 PM

It shouldn’t last long though debi118. Thankfully some of the lanes on the bridge were closed.

oakpack on August 1, 2007 at 9:06 PM

The storm is just starting to come in after weeks of hot & dry? I wonder if the rapid drop in barometric pressure contributed to this.

askheaves on August 1, 2007 at 9:06 PM

BacaDog on August 1, 2007 at 9:08 PM

Horrible.

madne0 on August 1, 2007 at 9:10 PM

60 kids on that bus. NONE seriously injured.

oakpack on August 1, 2007 at 9:14 PM

It’s only a matter of time, and we’ll see more of this. DOT estimates that about 45% of our nation’s bridges are “marginal” or in “need of repair”. Any quick glance underneath many of the bridges and overpasses here in NYC and you see concrete crumbling, exposed and bent steel reinforcement rods, etc.

Too reminiscent of when the Mianus River bridge in Greewich, CT collapsed…about a half-hour after I had driven over it.

JetBoy on August 1, 2007 at 9:20 PM

local channle 5, kstp, reported the bridge was in 2004 and it passed. They were resurfacing it. oakpack from picturs it looks like the bus only fell about 20 feet or so, I heard a lot of the kids hit the roof but nothing serious.

allrsn on August 1, 2007 at 9:21 PM

Billions are spent on our roads each year. So it cant be said that BDS is the cause of this. In fact sounds like they were working on said bridge at the time.

If heat melted steel how long till we hear conspiracy theories that it was a controlled demolition ?

Sorry to get prickly at this time but so sick of the moonbat logic.

Another coincidence: Thirty-one years ago TO THE DAY, on August 1, 1976, the Reichsbruecke collapsed over the Danube in Vienna, Austria.

http://www.reichsbruecke.net/geschichte_e.php (scroll down through the broken English to see the pics)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichsbruecke

It was a day of tragedy for Austria as, later that day, famous Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix driver Niki Lauda suffered extensive burns over his body at the German Grand Prix (kicking off a whole new era of driver safety in auto racing, incidentally). Perhaps not a big deal for us, but Austria’s a small place :-)

Incidentally our family knew the engineer(s) who designed the new bridge – lots of 16- and 18-hour summer days w/no AC to crank out the plans in record time – pretty unorthodox for a workers’-paradise country like Austria.

The collapse also solved a thorny city planning issue: how to extend the subway across the Danube in that exact place. Until then they assumed they’d need to tunnel or build a 2nd bridge. After the collapse they incorporated the subway into the new bridge and saved the taxpayers a bundle…

RD on August 1, 2007 at 9:32 PM

They Mythbusters did a show on how sympathetic vibrations or something like that, discovered by Nicola Tesla, could bring a bridge down. I think the episode ended with it being declared “plausible” but improbable. Maybe something like that happened here……

liquidflorian on August 1, 2007 at 9:32 PM

Fox reports that no additional rescue crews have been requested. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad.

amerpundit on August 1, 2007 at 9:32 PM

Anyone who sees the the cranes/construction in the background: yep, those funky-looking buildings going up behind the collapsed bridge are Hans Blix’s United Nations haunt (housing the IAEA and other assorted agencies).

Actually, they just had a former head of the NTSB on FoxNews who scared the hell out of me by noting that its not really all that uncommon, and then listing half a dozen recent examples. Connecticut, Oklahoma City, several others … apparently it does happen just like that. The guy reported a whole bunch of similar cases during his time at the NTSB.

I’m going to be nervous next time I drive over a bridge. I suddenly miss Al Quaida.
