Breaking: CAIR threatens Young America’s Foundation, seeks to stifle Robert Spencer Updates

posted at 3:04 pm on August 1, 2007 by Bryan

Noted author, Hot Air contributor/host and jihad watcher Robert Spencer is scheduled to speak before a gathering of the Young America’s Foundation in Washington on Thursday. CAIR, whose spokesman Ibrahim Hooper defamed Spencer on CNN Tuesday night, has issued a demand via its lawyers that YAF cancel the speech or “ensure that false and defamatory statements are not disseminated at that session.” Here’s the letter from CAIR’s lawyers to YAF.

cair-letter.png

This is an effort to stifle free speech in advance of anything having actually been said. It’s pernicious in my humble opinion, and a serious mistake on CAIR’s part to try to preempt its critics. I’m told by YAF that the speech will proceed as scheduled, and Jason Mattera, spokesman for YAF, responded to the CAIR complaint:

“CAIR can go to Hell and they can take their 72 virgins with them.”

I think CAIR has its answer.

By the way, tomorrow I’ll have an interview with another author, Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld, who has been hit with another lawyer jihad. Using courts to stifle free speech seems to have become a preferred tactic.

Update: Well, well. CAIR’s lawyer has major Democrat credentials.

Update: Via Michelle, Robert Spencer responds.

Note the personal smears, the attempt to bully and intimidate, and the non-specificity of the charges against me (they can’t be specific, because I don’t say anything inaccurate about them — or about Islam or jihad).

Note also the irony: this letter comes a day after CAIR’s Ibrahim Hooper slandered me on national television by ascribing to me hateful words written by someone else — which appeared on this site for about an hour, during which, lo and behold, someone at CAIR was watching.

I was speaking to a YAF official who told me that I was scheduled to speak as planned: “CAIR can go to Hell and they can take their 72 virgins with them.”

My own reply to CAIR: remember McAuliffe at Bastogne.

Neither Spencer nor YAF appear to be intimidated. Nor should they.

Update: The Washington Times has been working on this story all afternoon, and has a very good round-up on it.

Update: Robert Stacy McCain blogs on the atmosphere of fear and intimidation that CAIR’s threat letter has created at YAF’s banquet tonight.

“CAIR can go to Hell and they can take their 72 virgins with them.”

I like their response!

“CAIR can go to Hell and they can take their 72 virgins with them.”

Well said.

Bob's Kid on August 1, 2007 at 3:10 PM

What “legal remedy” could they possibly use?

Suck it, CAIR.

Valiant on August 1, 2007 at 3:12 PM

This is great, let them whine, and the world will see who they really are. Even the MSM will have to “out” these phonies.

72 virgin line, what a classic.

It shows how much they fear him.

Once again we see who are the true intimidators.

What “legal remedy” could they possibly use?

If the speach was in New York cair would have the police charge YAF with a hate crime.

“CAIR can go to Hell and they can take their 72 virgins with them.”

Best answer to fascists since Gen. McAuliffe replied “Nuts” to the German demand for surrender during the Battle of the Bulge.

Drew on August 1, 2007 at 3:17 PM

I wonder if CAIR is pushing its luck with this ‘legal jihad’. If there’s anything Americans are more fed up with than jihadist rhetoric, it’s frivolous law suits.

RedWinged Blackbird on August 1, 2007 at 3:19 PM

It just means that Spencer is shedding light on this in the right way. If there was a way for them to actually sue under the law, they would sue Spencer. There isn’t so they can’t.

By the way, they mentioned a ‘Fatwa’ that CAIR declared. Wouldn’t the university need Spencer to explain to the people reading this letter what exactly a ‘fatwa’ is, what would the importance of it be, and who has authority to declare a ‘fatwa’, and who in fact gives credibility to whatever a ‘fatwa’ is.

If terrorism is against the law, shouldn’t that weigh more than a ‘fatwa’ in America?

Get Em Spencer!

ThackerAgency on August 1, 2007 at 3:20 PM

I guess they didn’t realize that YAF isn’t full of libs.

“CAIR can go to Hell and they can take their 72 virgins with them.”

That statement, along with the store clerk video, has made this a very good day. Now, any politicians out there? memorize that statement, and use often.

Weight of Glory on August 1, 2007 at 3:25 PM

That’s great. They will put our minds at ease by issuing more fatwas. Tell ya what, call back when no one is declaring any more fatwas, then we’ll talk.

Regarding Ibrahim Hooper and CAIR’s effort to restrict free speech: Allah would not be pleased!

IntheNet on August 1, 2007 at 3:27 PM

That whole 72 virgins thing is a hoax- Those bitches are whores- they get around way too much.

BelchSpeak on August 1, 2007 at 3:27 PM

Love, love, love their response!

Spencer, in telling the truth about CAIR, should carefully cite every U.S. government agency that has an opinion about that lobbying organization, since he will simply be restating the facts as our government sees them. For example, he should — throughout his presentation — refer to the group as “CAIR – the unindicted co-conspirator in a criminal conspiracy to support the Arab Palestinian terrorist group, Hamas, as named by federal prosecutors in June.”

And then, using the CAIR letter above, he should sue CAIR for slander for calling him a bigot. Let’s see what can be proven in court first: that Spencer is a bigot or that CAIR provides material support to terrorist groups.

Oh, and we should thank CAIR for making this session of the YAF meeting what will likely be its best attended, and for ensuring that the lame stream media will now have to cover what Spencer and the US government and thinking people everywhere KNOW about CAIR.

Between this, the flying imams, and the shellacking CAIR’s mouthpiece Ibrahim Hooper took on CNN last night from Christopher Hitchens and Dennis Prager, this organization and its 1,200 members are having a bad month. Let’s hope it gets a lot worse, you know, with Spencer’s truth hitting a much wider audience.

Rational Thought on August 1, 2007 at 3:29 PM

CAIR can go to Hell and they can take their 72 virgins with them.”

A clear sign of intimidation against Muslims!!!

Hitchens was right. You want people to show your religion respect? Quit trying to dominate every society your presence plagues and then wrap yourself inside a persecution complex whenever someone takes umbrage with your zealotry.

Vyce on August 1, 2007 at 3:29 PM

Using courts to stifle free speech seems to have become a preferred tactic.

The legal system condons it, how can the islamists lose?? Our entire legal system consistantly supports our enemy (6 Imams, the koran hate crime, and more). We are not allowed to fight them externaly and we play games (lots of legal $$$ and political votes) with them internally!

I hope you are right RedWinged at some point even the far left must be able to see even thier socialist agenda is also threatened.

Spencer Akbar!

Ever notice how CAIR lawsuits always fall apart right around discovery?

Pablo on August 1, 2007 at 3:30 PM

CAIR is simply the PR arm of the Saudi jihad against America. Saudi Arabia funded Al Qaeda to make direct attacks on America. Saudi Arabi funds CAIR to make indirect attacks on America through the media and to use our legal system against us to enforce the Wahhabi view. CAIR and Al Qaeda are two different arms of the same Saudi Arabia, our enemy.

Saudi Arabia must be destroyed.

Tantor on August 1, 2007 at 3:30 PM

Here’s to YAF! Great response to this terrorist garbage!

DCJeff on August 1, 2007 at 3:31 PM

CAIR’s 1700 mebership should marginalize it. However the millions Saudi Arabia has given it, and the fawning of all elements of government, make it a player.

The millions means they can bankrupt anyone they please with law suits.

Does anyone know what the requirements are for having to register as an agent of a foreign power?

davod on August 1, 2007 at 3:31 PM

I’m game. So long as CAIR ensures muslims will stop murdering people around the world.

Blake on August 1, 2007 at 3:35 PM

Wow. For a group that is always pushing for tolerance and acceptance, it seems like they want neither one when it comes to the truth.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 1, 2007 at 3:36 PM

This is an effort to stifle free speech in advance of anything having actually been said.

The legal term is “prior restraint.”

Karl on August 1, 2007 at 3:39 PM

Shut up you guys. This is no different than the lawsuit that the Catholic Church’s lawsuit to stop Christopher Hitchens from publishing his anti-religion book.

Oh, no, wait…it seems they didn’t do that.

Guardian on August 1, 2007 at 3:41 PM

Karl–I thought about prior restraint, too, and looked it up, but it seems prior restraint only applies to the government’s censorship, not CAIR’s transparently BS legal threat.

If they received an injunction shutting down the YAF meeting, that would be prior restraint.

Ummm can I be the first to say: Jason Mattera For President

Zetterson on August 1, 2007 at 3:42 PM

As soon as CAIR mentioned muslems and civil liberties in the same sentence their case evaporated. Their membership had dwindled so bad that they are just a shell of what they were a couple of years ago. Similar to the NAACP in that only the most infected hatemongerers are left. CAIR, NAACP and KKK are just hate groups that exist for one reason…unmitigated anti-American hate.

BacaDog on August 1, 2007 at 3:51 PM

CAIR keeps suing people…. and CAIR keeps getting it’s head handed to it in the courts. But like the bunch of terrorist bone-heads they are… that doesn’t stop them. Below is what happened in CAIR’s suit against ANTI-CAIR.

In a stunning setback, the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ defamation suit against Andrew Whitehead of Anti-CAIR has been dismissed with prejudice.

Now CAIR has made this defamatory statement against Robert Spencer:

… Mr. Spencer [a] well-known purveyor of hatred and bigotry against Muslims, has a history of false and defamatory statements. Several of those statements have falsely accused CAIR of activity that would constitute a federal criminal offense.

That false statement by CAIR against Mr. Spenser looks actionable to me. I hope Mr. Spenser sues all 72 of CAIR virgins panties off !

Maxx on August 1, 2007 at 3:54 PM

I’ve made this point before, but CAIR’s constant militancy and threats to sue are the worst possible representatives for Muslims to the American public.

Even looking beyond their questionable ties, their rhetoric is so whiny it alienates anyone who comes in contact with them. Waaah, somebody put a Koran in a toilet. Cowboy the bleep up, because the rest of us see flags burned, religion mocked, and bibles desecrated in the name of art every damn day.

see-dubya on August 1, 2007 at 3:54 PM

“CAIR can go to Hell and they can take their 72 virgins with them.”

classy.

crr6 on August 1, 2007 at 3:54 PM

My bad… for misspelling Robert Spencer’s name the last line. My apologies.

Maxx on August 1, 2007 at 3:58 PM

Code Pinko only has about 10 members but look at all the press they get. It isn’t membership that gives you a voice in this country, but rather the constant, loud, and outrageous actions, along with a deep financial source, that gives you power in America. CAIR has unlimited funds from Saudi Arabia and most lefty groups get funding from George Soros. The best way to combat these fascists is to get in their face and keep your temper and give reasoned, logical arguments to dispel their fear mongering.

LakeRuins on August 1, 2007 at 3:59 PM

Unfortunately. No matter how despicable. CAIR’s tactics are working, in context of our legal system. And this is what really frightens me the most.

Lawrence on August 1, 2007 at 4:08 PM

UGH! Please — I don’t even want to imagine that…. :)

CAIR will probably post a stupid and hate filled comment on jihadwatch and then attribute it to Robert Spencer.

Chuck in Detroit on August 1, 2007 at 4:58 PM

I just called Sandler’s office, had the receptionist confirm for my own ears that the letter is genuine, expressed my concern, and told her I would complain.

I then called (one of) my Senators and my Rep. (both Republicans) and explained the problem. The staff receptionists both appreciated the call.

Then I called Chuck Schumer’s office – he is quoted at Anti-CAIR’s web site: “we know [CAIR] has ties to terrorism” and “intimate links with Hamas.” Upon my call, his staff receptionist was mum.

Vive la difference!

fred5678 on August 1, 2007 at 5:04 PM

Remember from the movie “Patton” or “Battle of the Bulge” (I forget which), the German general’s response to hearing of Gen. McAuliffe’s “Nuts”???

German general (phonetically): “Vas is das ‘Nuts’?”

I love good dialogue.

Can anyone provide CAIR’s equivalent to the German general’s response??

fred5678 on August 1, 2007 at 5:15 PM

Doesn’t Mr. Spencer now have a case for defamation?

Even if he did not, if it were me I would spend a good deal of time making sure their attorney got rich by having to constantly answer to the endless complaints I would bring against them!

I think an effort should be made to find out who posted that genocidal message at JihadWatch. If it was up for only an hour or so and was quoted by CAIR on national television the very next day, I would not be supprized if the IP address for the poster was traced back to CAIR.

Then I would gladly take that case on a contingency. I’d love to line my pocket with my 33% share of the Saudi oil money we would win.

Someone give Robert my card.

Letter I sent to the emails of the two attorneys listed in the letter who represent C.A.I.R.:

Re: Your Client – C.A.I.R.
Letter dated: August 1, 2007 to YAF

Dear Mr. Reiff:

I do not speak for YAF nor do I speak for Mr. Robert Spencer. I wish I could make the YAF meeting, but I’m not a member and have never attended any of their events. I do applaud their offering Mr. Robert Spencer the opportunity to speak. Having read the Book of Hate, i.e. the Quran, I applaud Mr. Spencer’s efforts to speak out against Islamic Fascism and their apologists.

In that I can not attend and having read your correspondence dated August 1, 2007, I would like to add my response as an attorney, but more importantly as simply an American. This is solely my response:

Please tell your client to go to hell to join along side their pedophile false warmongering fascist prophet Mohammad (Damned to hell already).

I appreciate your forwarding said response from this American to your client.

Very truly yours,

XXXXXX X. XXXXX, Esq.
Attorney at Law

PS – Thank you for your time and consideration.

I am assuming that the Korans were dunked in a toilet in a men’s restroom, so could female muslims be intimidated by the alleged actions?

Their intimidation only counts as 50% of a male Muslim’s. But I’m not sure how the whole menstrual blood thing might factor into “intimidation” in the event of dropping a Koran into a women’s toilet.

(I’m sorely tempted to post a query in broken English at AskImam.com.)

My own reply to CAIR: remember McAuliffe at Bastogne.

Especially Col. Harper’s clarificication:

But then McAuliffe realized that some sort of reply was in order. He pondered for a few minutes and then told the staff, “Well I don’t know what to tell them.” He then asked the staff what they thought, and I spoke up, saying, “That first remark of yours would be hard to beat.” McAuliffe said, “What do you mean?” I answered, “Sir, you said ‘Nuts’.” All members of the staff enthusiastically agreed, and McAuliffe decided to send that one word, “Nuts!” back to the Germans. McAuliffe then wrote down: “To the German Commander, “Nuts!” The American Commander.”

McAuliffe then asked Col. Harper to deliver the message to the Germans. Harper took the typed message back to the company command post where the two German officers were detained. Harper then told the Germans that he had the American commanders reply. The German captain then asked, “Is it written or verbal?” Harper responded that it was written and added, “I will place it in your hand.”

The German major then asked, “Is the reply negative or affirmative? If it is the latter I will negotiate further.”

At this time the Germans were acting in an arrogant and patronizing manner and Harper, who was starting to lose his temper, responded, “The reply is decidedly not affirmative.” He then added that, “If you continue your foolish attack your losses will be tremendous.”

Harper then put the German officers in a jeep and took them back to where the German enlisted men were detained. He then said to the German captain, “If you don’t know what ‘Nuts’ means, in plain English it is the same as ‘Go to Hell’. And I’ll tell you something else, if you continue to attack we will kill every goddam German that tries to break into this city.
