FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents searched the home of U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens on Monday.
Investigative sources told FOX News that the FBI executed a search warrant at the Girdwood, Alaska, house. Sources would not detail what the search team is looking for, but said agents continued to do extensive work at the property late Monday.
Stevens, who was formerly chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, has reportedly been under investigation for exchanging federal contracts for bribes, illegal gratuities and unreported gifts from VECO Corp., Alaska’s largest oil-field engineering firm.
Update (AP): Sounds like they think VECO might have bought him a house, or at least part of one:
In May, the Anchorage Daily News revealed the FBI was investigating whether the firm had paid for expansion work to Stevens’ home in Girdwood, performed in 2000. Stevens has said he paid invoices for the work from his own pocket.

Great to see “Republican” in the article.
You don’t know how many times I’ve waited in anticipation to find political affiliations just to come up empty.
TheEJS on July 30, 2007 at 7:54 PM
FBI Hint: Look in the freezer! That’s where they like to keep the loot. They don’t call it “cold hard cash” for nothin’ ya know!
TheBigOldDog on July 30, 2007 at 7:55 PM
If he’s guilty, then let him resign.
Quickly. So I don’t have to hear any more nonsense about tubes or regulating the Internets again.
Christoph on July 30, 2007 at 7:55 PM
wait I thought Bush was using the Justice department and FBI to trackdown disidents when did Stevens become a democrat ?
William Amos on July 30, 2007 at 7:56 PM
Geez, they could sweep out both senators and a representative if the other investigations have legs.
Bradky on July 30, 2007 at 7:56 PM
I agree with Christoph…if he’s guilty…resign pronto. I wish the IRS would investigate Dianne Feinstein’s connection with blood diamonds.
SouthernGent on July 30, 2007 at 7:57 PM
Waiting for Dingy Harry to protest the search….
<cricket_cue>
…still waiting…
</cricket_cue>
Oh, that’s right; ‘Rats won’t return the favor that Denny Hastert and company delivered them with respect to William “The Freezer” Jefferson.
steveegg on July 30, 2007 at 7:57 PM
This is great news. Stevens has been a traitor in the War on Liberalism which makes him more dangerous than Teddy K in many ways.
Valiant on July 30, 2007 at 7:57 PM
If he’s guilty they better through his dishonest butt in jail. People who betray their Office, and hence the public trust, deserve the harshest treatment.
TheBigOldDog on July 30, 2007 at 7:58 PM
Generally I like to think of the guys with the R’s as the good guys, but that whole bridge to nowhere thing wasn’t pretty. I seem to recall some Murtha-like outburst when people started asking questions about it.
I want the head of the Senate Appropriations Committee to scream “NO!” like my 2 year old niece having a tantrum. Instead of the Earmark Nazi (No money for you!) Stevens spent like Imelda Marcos at a Manolo Blahnik Factory Outlet.
Now if we can just get the other 99 investigated, starting with the D’s, then we might get some fiscal restraint. I’m not exactly holding my breath.
trubble on July 30, 2007 at 8:00 PM
Well, you don’t build a bridge to nowhere for nothing you know.
BacaDog on July 30, 2007 at 8:00 PM
Enough for a search warrant is … innnnteeeressting.
Dusty on July 30, 2007 at 8:04 PM
Feinstein’s next, right?
amerpundit on July 30, 2007 at 8:08 PM
The documents are either in a big truck or in the tubes.
MadisonConservative on July 30, 2007 at 8:09 PM
Does anyone seriously believe that the king of pork could be anything other than filthy dirty after more than four decades in the pigpen?
Good riddance! Faster please!
cool breeze on July 30, 2007 at 8:11 PM
Nope.
Let’s play Dump the Dinosaurs.
fogw on July 30, 2007 at 8:13 PM
No tears from me. Sen. Ted Stevens gives Republicans a bad name.
Maxx on July 30, 2007 at 8:16 PM
That approach worked well with Cold Cash Jefferson in La, but Alaska is a MIGHTY BIG freezer to be lookin’ in. I think maybe we need to narrow it down a bit.
CyberCipher on July 30, 2007 at 8:20 PM
Hmmm. Maybe the bridge will lead somewhere after all — like maybe those people on the other end of the bridge know something about where Stevens hides his ill-gotten gains, ya’ think?
CyberCipher on July 30, 2007 at 8:22 PM
Heh. Two hundred million dollar boondoggles don’t come for free, Cyber.
BacaDog on July 30, 2007 at 8:38 PM
Alaska has a Republican governor so dump him quickly and reappoint a Republican replacement. If they got the goods on this guy then we don’t need him hanging on and generating more bad press.
rplat on July 30, 2007 at 8:41 PM
If guilty I hope they throw him in jail.
Buzzy on July 30, 2007 at 8:58 PM
Good! I hope they find a lot on him. He’s a Republican we can do without. Next to Robert Byrd, this guy is the King of pork.
Jim-Rose on July 30, 2007 at 8:59 PM
KleptoCons need to go.
Bad Candy on July 30, 2007 at 9:04 PM
Term Limits, folks, term limits.
thebookkeeper on July 30, 2007 at 9:29 PM
Yep.
Jaibones on July 30, 2007 at 9:30 PM
What’s Murtha… chopped liver?
Murtha and Cunningham should’ve been cellies by now.
SilverStar830 on July 30, 2007 at 9:34 PM
Coulda, mighta, shoulda, but for the difference in parties.
steveegg on July 30, 2007 at 9:40 PM
Abso-freaking-lutly, imagine how many POS fatcats would not be in the senate right now. I can think of a few, the drunk Jabba-the-hut, Sheets Byrd, sphinkter I mean Specter.
conservnut on July 30, 2007 at 9:40 PM
He’s always been a Democrat… in Republican clothing. His lifetime “American Conservative Union” rating is a mere 64%. That’s lousy.
Maxx on July 30, 2007 at 9:45 PM
A Pox on both of their houses.
Yeah I know I’ve already said that today.
It fits this post even better.
TunaTalon on July 30, 2007 at 9:58 PM
What astounds me is the arrogance of Stevens, Murtha, Byrd, etc, etc, etc,. These guys get so out of touch, they think they are untouchable. Term Limits is a policy we can live with.
commonsensehoosier on July 30, 2007 at 10:15 PM
Conservative Country Club Republican
BowHuntingTexas on July 30, 2007 at 10:18 PM
The [does not equal] sign did not compute.
Conservative [does not equal] Country Club Republican.
BowHuntingTexas on July 30, 2007 at 10:19 PM
I will never forget his crying on the floor over the bridge to nowhere. Republicans can do better. Maybe we can get someone with enough credibility and charisma to push ANWAR drilling. That would be better for the last frontier than any pork.
Dirthead on July 30, 2007 at 10:26 PM
EXACTLY!!!
Let’s do go after Murtha, Kennedy…..
Aggie85 on July 30, 2007 at 10:29 PM
When I first heard this story, all I could think of is please don’t let this contractor be oil related (I’m in the business). We don’t seem to be doing ourselves any favors when it comes to image.
Aggie85 on July 30, 2007 at 10:33 PM
Well, If nothing else, the last couple of years have been useful in one way: They have re-taught me to distrust ANY politician, regardless of which party they may be affiliated.
Tar and feather them all, then lock them up for a year for every dollar they have acquired or directed to their friends in any dishonest way.
LegendHasIt on July 30, 2007 at 11:53 PM
Is it RINO season already?
andycanuck on July 31, 2007 at 12:08 AM
The man is a pig. The faster he goes down, the better.
Get ‘em all, for chrissakes!
thegreatbeast on July 31, 2007 at 1:22 AM
No chance in hell. She has a D by her name. It stands for Dodge as in Dodge any charges for pay-offs.
Tim Burton on July 31, 2007 at 3:46 AM
Dems are not objective or intellectually honest enough to hold there leaders to a high standards.
But when a Republican is found to be unethical, Dems have to stand at the back of the line to punch ‘em because Conservatives are the first ones to get their licks in…
Example:
Barney Frank aka Hot-bottom , D pass
Bob Packwood , R busted
Marian Berry aka Crack Master B , D pass and pass
Duke Cunningham R busted
Bill Clinton aka Der Slickmeister D Pass
The conflict against the dems is like combating terrorist, they play by different rules.
We abide by Geneva conv. Rules but they are exempt.
But, I guess taking the high road is not the easiest road.
I think abuse of the public trust should be a hanging offense. It is tantamount to treason!
TheSitRep on July 31, 2007 at 6:54 AM
This better be a case of taking down a Republican, then taking down another…then going after Feinstein, the big fish. Showing that the justice department investigates both sides of the aisle.
You may hear a little less bravado from the left side of the aisle…
right2bright on July 31, 2007 at 8:19 AM
And Dirty Harry Reid used taxpayer dollars to build a bridge to land in Nevada that he owns to increase the value of that land. Oh wait….he’s a Democrap and can do this. It’s the Republicans who need to be investigated. And Hillary’s past stock deals increased her net worth because she can anticipate the market better than anyone else. Insider trading? Fahgetaboutit!
lynnv on July 31, 2007 at 8:53 AM
And the Republican party wonders why its fund raising is down. They need to clean house NOW. I’m sick and tired of having my hard earned dough go to the likes of Stevens, Specter, Snowe, Hagel, etc. Unless they start enforcing the conservative agenda then they are running candidates no different than the Dems.
I know this is unrealistic, but I’ll say it anyway. Time for a third party. The Elephant is wounded and could be dying.
pistolero on July 31, 2007 at 8:55 AM
‘Rats or Repubs, corruption is truly an equal-opportunity ‘feature’ of some folks. There’s money to be had, and some just can’t help putting their hands out.
I think about half of Congress should probably be in jail.
Henry Bowman on July 31, 2007 at 9:00 AM
It shows that corruption, like bipartisanship, crosses party lines. I agree with term limits, but don’t know how we can be guaranteed, competency, with a wave of Freshman or Sophomore legislators. I do recognize the hypocrisy of the Democrats when it comes to their own versus the Republicans. That gets down to….why is that the case, whether they are the majority or not? What mechanism within government, insulates the Democrats from the same scrutiny that Republicans are under? The Jefferson cold cash scandal, probably wouldn’t have gone as far as it has, if it wasn’t for all the light shined on it by bloggers and talk radio. Perhaps, we’re not shining as much light on the Democratic leadership in a meaningful way. There is a concerted effort, behind the scenes, and from the MSM, to look in any crack or crevace, to bring down the Republicans. To the Republicans, it is unsportsmanlike, to do the same.
