Video: “Internet Dream”

The other right-wing blogs won’t bring you the new cuts from the man responsible for “Chocolate Rain,” will they? Hell no. Here’s the thing about Tay Zonday: whatever you think of his voice, the guy just doesn’t have a handle on the verse-chorus-verse form of songwriting. Simple as that. Click the link, revisit his master work, and find yourself in a five-minute nightmare of verse-verse-verse with no bridge in sight. There’s an inkling of evolution in the spoken-word parts here but until I hear a bona fide, full-fledged melodic transformation I’m pronouncing this dude not ready for prime time. Tell me why I’m wrong.

Horribly slow news day to abuse us with Tay Zonday.

BelchSpeak on July 27, 2007 at 4:30 PM

I’m pronouncing this dude not ready for prime time.

I hear they’re looking for a new host at the Buzz.

BacaDog on July 27, 2007 at 4:33 PM

How did I miss that post the other day?

And – no, I can’t tell you why you’re wrong. This dude is right where he belongs – a youtube star! Almost as fantastic as Boy Shakira.

nailinmyeye on July 27, 2007 at 4:36 PM

So when is he going to be on David Letterman?

- The Cat

P.S. MKH should talk about him on O’Reilly and beat em to the punch.

MirCat on July 27, 2007 at 4:37 PM

Is he wearing a silk shirt circa 1991???

robblefarian on July 27, 2007 at 4:39 PM

“the Rose” had no stinking bridge and it did OK.
I hate that song too BTW….

bbz123 on July 27, 2007 at 4:47 PM

He did the monster mash

RightWinged on July 27, 2007 at 4:47 PM

Never knew so much liquid could involuntarily come through the nose and mouth!

God, I’m sore from snorting.

Mcguyver on July 27, 2007 at 4:53 PM

I think we all know this is Tay’s greatest hit:
Rick Roll!

askheaves on July 27, 2007 at 4:56 PM

I haven’t been able to find dick about this guy, so I’m a little suspicious. Ever since lonelygirl15, the whole internet-personality meme thing just hasn’t had the same impact on me.

gryphon202 on July 27, 2007 at 4:57 PM

Horribly slow news day to abuse us with Tay Zonday.

BelchSpeak on July 27, 2007 at 4:30 PM

Ya, it’s been a real yawner

Wade on July 27, 2007 at 5:16 PM

He’s got potential…but he’s in love with his own voice.

jdpaz on July 27, 2007 at 5:28 PM

He’s got potential…but he’s in love with his own voice.

jdpaz on July 27, 2007 at 5:28 PM

wouldn’t you be?

he’s suck-all at songwriting, but he should be announcing movie trailers.

jummy on July 27, 2007 at 5:32 PM

He didn’t sound quite so good in this take.

jdpaz on July 27, 2007 at 5:36 PM

So…is he living his life with his internet dream?

James on July 27, 2007 at 5:38 PM

His version of “never gonna give you up”, makes you wonder if he isnt the bastard child of Kermit and James Earl Jones

firepilot on July 27, 2007 at 5:51 PM

Umm I watched that other post and knew what this would give but I still clicked it to watch. I guess I need a vacation. Its one of those vids where its funny for about 15 seconds, then it drags on painfully for a few minutes then gets so bad its funny again near the end. As it fades out I realize that yet again I have squandered several minutes of my life watching something that should only be viewed by… well it shouldnt really be viewed at all.

Just more proof that the Internet will destroy the human race.

bigskinny on July 27, 2007 at 5:56 PM

I decided not to listen. His chocolate rain song was stuck in my head for hours.
I almost needed therapy.

TheSitRep on July 27, 2007 at 6:01 PM

The dude can’t carry a tune. Sure he’s got James Earl Jones’ voice, but he can’t sing worth a damn. Askheaves’ Rickroll link proves that.

Mindcrime on July 27, 2007 at 6:18 PM

Guy needs to forget about his internet dream and find a real girlfriend.

srhoades on July 27, 2007 at 6:29 PM

OK, AP. You took for 30 seconds on this one.

I guess I shouldn’t complain because it could be worse. You could always go on a Lohan kick for a couple of weeks.

csdeven on July 27, 2007 at 7:12 PM

I still like the 8bit version better…

hit start already!

Asher on July 27, 2007 at 7:54 PM

What did we ever do to you, AP? Some one get this man his damn iPhone already.

ticticboom on July 27, 2007 at 8:47 PM

The eyes!

mesablue on July 27, 2007 at 9:01 PM

Dude’s my hero. Rock on Tay Zonday, rock on.

SouthernDem on July 27, 2007 at 9:50 PM

Your not wrong, Allah. I thought the same thing. He’s got a good voice and great lungs but the entire song was just a continuous loop of the first 4 measures.

Joshua P. Allem on July 28, 2007 at 1:19 AM

I still like his voice. It’s awesome!

pugsly on July 28, 2007 at 2:30 AM

He didn’t sound quite so good in this take.

jdpaz on July 27, 2007 at 5:36 PM

Now that’s funny. The stream-of-consciousness lyrics of the spoof reminds me of a traffic guy I used to work with in radio: same basso profundo pipes, poor application. He used to find ways to stretch his reports out with inanities like “plenty of sun glare on the East-bound drives this morning, be sure to grab your shades on the way out.” Meanwhile, we (in another studio) would be saying things (off air) like, “be sure to take your keys before you start the car…” “don’t forget to push the garage door opener before backing out” and sometimes have ourselves in stitches by the time he’d toss back to us. (Okay, maybe you had to be there…)

Would, if I could. Can’t, so I won’t.

soundingboard on July 28, 2007 at 8:53 AM

askheaves on July 27, 2007 at 4:56 PM

Wow.

That’s almost a monotone, one phrase rendition.

If I hadn’t clicked the links in the comments, I would have thought AP was goofin’ on us with a Karaoke Robot.

But a robot should have pre-programmed EQ, FX, and rythmic patterns embedded in the software.

But,in either case, real or robot. It’s back to the drawing board, or the rehearsal hall.

soundingboard on July 28, 2007 at 9:22 AM

arrgh.

who will rid me of these cursed tags?

soundingboard on July 28, 2007 at 9:24 AM

Still, you gotta admit he’s got some pipes. With voice like that he’s got a career, even if it’s voicing commercials.

rivlax on July 28, 2007 at 2:59 PM

Dammit, what’s a guy gotta do to get more Rick Astley covers?

Tay’s rendition of “Never Gonna Give You Up” was like a fall teaser for a summer blockbuster. Left me needing more.
