Clinton using cleavage controversy to raise cash

Well why not? If Silky can bash send out his wife to bash Coulter and raise campaign funds, why can’t Hillary Clinton use what nature gave her?

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign has sent out a fundraising letter calling a Washington Post fashion writer’s column on Clinton’s cleavage “grossly inappropriate” and asking donors “to take a stand against this kind of coarseness and pettiness in American culture.”

One week after the piece, by fashion writer Robin Givhan, took note of the Democratic candidate’s low neckline during a speech on the Senate floor, senior Clinton adviser Ann Lewis urged donors to help fight treatment she termed “insulting.”

The fundraising letter begins:

Can you believe that The Washington Post wrote a 746-word article on Hillary’s cleavage? ….. I’ve seen some off-topic press coverage–but talking about body parts? That is grossly inappropriate.

Frankly, focusing on women’s bodies instead of their ideas is insulting. It’s insulting to every women who has ever tried to be taken seriously in a business meeting. It’s insulting to our daughters–and our sons–who are constantly pressured by the media to grow up too fast.

But it’s not so insulting that the Clinton campaign won’t try to use it to generate some Washingtons.

The sad thing is, with her meet-rogue-leaders-or-not spat with Obama, Hillary had earned some of my (grudging) respect. Call that a step forward. But this fund-raising letter? Two steps back. At least.

At least. This sort of pandering to others inclined to the ‘victim mentality’ is disgusting.

She’s two-for-two with me. Maybe I’m not cynical enough for this game, but I have nothing but respect for the ass-whipping she’s giving my knucklehead Senator on Tyrant-Fest, and I agree with everything she said in her fundraiser about the Cleavage Caper.

You think she’s milking it?

Which media were focused on Mrs. Thompson, not long ago, en mini-masse? The Martian one!

Eleanor Roosevelt would have just punched em out.

Limerick on July 27, 2007 at 4:37 PM

Meant to write “Mrs. Thompson’s body and youth”. Also, cleavage or not, the Glacier looks ugly, ugly in that picture.

Not a step back for me. The spat she’s having with Obama is more important than if she sends out an email asking for donations because of something someone wrote about her.

Now, adding email addresses of people who sent get-well messages to your wife, to funraiser lists, that’s slimy.

PatrickS on July 27, 2007 at 4:23 PM

I’m sure they’ll correct it tommorrow.

congsan on July 27, 2007 at 4:42 PM

Same media focus on Americans’ disinclination to vote for bald men…historically, of course (nothing at all to do with their preferences, as they are above such fold).

Entelechy on July 27, 2007 at 4:42 PM

I’m not one to defend Clinton, but Tancredo’s doing the same thing. Here’s part of an email I got from him regarding his fight with Brownback:

In this case it’s Senator Sam Brownback. For years in the pocket of big business, Sam is one of the most reliable pro-amnesty votes in the Senate. He ranks right up their with John McCain getting a “D” on his amnesty report card. Yet he is out in Iowa telling the voter he is against amnesty and has been working hard for a secure border! It’s an outrage!
….
Sen. Brownback’s calls are malicious and deceitful, completely mischaracterizing Tom’s life-long record, and we’ve called him on it. But we are not backing down!
….
But I need your help. To make certain we are able to defeat this amnesty politician I need to reach as many Iowans as possible and I need to do so now! The straw poll is in less than three weeks! Any contribution you can make this week will go to smoking out this pro-amnesty fraud.
….

amerpundit on July 27, 2007 at 4:43 PM

Oh come on! This is all about Elizabeth Edwards saying her husband was more of a woman than Hillary.

This is Hillary’s way of drawing attention to the fact she has boobies and John doesn’t.

;-)

Rightwingsparkle on July 27, 2007 at 4:44 PM

Respect Hillary???

congsan on July 27, 2007 at 4:42 PM

Yes, because she’s taking the rational stance, and not backing down, though it’s not popular with moonbats.

amerpundit on July 27, 2007 at 4:44 PM

One of Hillary’s main problems is that she’s not comfortable as a woman, nor as a man. Margaret Thatcher had no such qualms, and Hillary is no Margaret Thatcher.

Entelechy on July 27, 2007 at 4:50 PM

I’m not really an expert on these things, but the section of the paper where the article appeared is called “fashion”. The writer proceeds to observe something and then take us down memory lane with Hill’s outfits.

I know fundraising is important, and apparently most of the Dems find milage in “I’m being oppressed or dissed or victimized” but honestly, does her senior advisor whining about a fashion article really translate to more bucks?

daveintexas on July 27, 2007 at 4:50 PM

ericire12 on July 27, 2007 at 4:53 PM

The Clinton Machine is on standby……she (and every other candidate) knows she has a lock on this race. All it will take is a half dozen strolls, hand and hand with Saint Bill, through the half dozen largest cities in America and the nomination is locked up.

That is when Mommy Dearest will make an appearance and there won’t be a single news outlet willing to mention her body parts. Look out Rep’s….Ma Barker might just be made out of Krypotnite afterall. Oh-eight is gonna make Oh-Oh look like a playground fight.

They don’t appear to be similar to me.

As to Hillary Clinton, she is a socialist liberal. Are there worse, of course. She as any human is deserving of courtesy and respect in address. But as to respect for reasoned, rational thought….come now.

Givhan, who won a Pulitzer Prize last year, said she disagreed “that there was anything in the column that was coarse, insulting or belittling. It was a piece about a public person’s appearance on the Senate floor that was surprising because of the location and because of the person. It’s disingenuous to think that revealing cleavage, any amount of it, in that kind of situation is a non-issue….Hillary-”We’re going to tell those sexists to shut up”!

sonnyspats1 on July 27, 2007 at 7:37 PM

Just watch out if she starts dropping her pen and bending over in the direction of the camera. She’ll send out another mailing calling for the halt of zoom lens that can see down women’s blouses.

Mallard T. Drake on July 27, 2007 at 8:05 PM

Hillary looks alright, I’m not going to make fun of her. I’m more concerned that she’s a Socialist on a collision course with the welfare of this nation. I haven’t seen the photos, however.

Maby she was taking a cue from all the young girls who are exposing themselves for the paparazzi. They know if you show a little skin you’ll get some attention from the blogs…

I’ve seen some off-topic press coverage–but talking about body parts? That is grossly inappropriate.

But it was entirely appropriate for their side to milk (unintended pun) every bit of publicity they could when the shading on a magazine cover photo of Al Gore in his khaki best seemed to suggest things about the size of his “package?” [Someone please help me here, I don't have time to look it up: I believe it was a Rolling Stone magazine cover but I can't recall of it was during the Clinton era or the 2000 campaign.]

Captain Scarlet on July 27, 2007 at 11:58 PM

Found it:

Gore made an infamous appearance on Rolling Stone’s cover leading up to the 2000 election. Leering, preening, and sporting an air-brushed zipper region, the would-be president was at the center of “The Affair Of The Crotch,” an episode in American political history best forgotten.

Photographers later confessed to “touching up” Gore’s photo in an attempt to portray him as not only non-robotic, but a person – a virile, chest-thumping, testosterone-soaked alpha-male.

Captain Scarlet on July 28, 2007 at 3:03 AM

With the Clintons, there’s always a body part or a body involved.

Bent members, bitten lips, Vince Foster….

Much as it galls me to admit it, (checking to make sure barf-bag is close) Hillary is right on this point. It’s her ideas that are important (and dangerous), not her cleavage. What really irks me was that one anchorwoman was spouting off about it while showing three times the skin Hillary was. I did not find her outfit inappropriate in the least.

On a side note, given her age and the fact that she has had a daughter, isn’t she entitled to a little, uhm, sag?
Are we so taken in by the plasticized Katie Courics and Dolly Partons of our world that we now take it for granted that any female in the public domain shouldn’t look a day over 25? Just wondering.
