Rahm Emanuel fills La Raza with heart-ache: No amnesty ’til 2012

Granted, Rahm is one of Hillary’s boys and the Glacier conspicuously refused to promise anything beyond her “best efforts” if she’s elected. (Obama, by contrast, promised them el sol, la luna, y las estrellas.) But even so, why rule out amnesty to a key voting bloc before you absolutely have to? All I can assume is that Rahm, as DCCC chair, knows better than anyone what the numbers on amnesty by district look like.

And those numbers ain’t good for La Raza.

The congressman’s statement was reported by a Hispanic activist and confirmed by Mr. Emanuel. “Congressman Rahm Emanuel said to me two weeks ago, there is no way this legislation is happening in the Democratic House, in the Democratic Senate, in the Democratic presidency, in the first term,” Juan Salgado, board chairman of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, told the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) at its annual convention last weekend.

Through a spokesman, Mr. Emanuel, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, blamed Republicans for botching this year’s debate and said that makes it tougher for Democrats to return to the issue…

“I was caught off-guard by the statement,” Mr. Salgado said in an interview. “I interpret his comments as a lack of courage on what they know is right. Listen, we’re here at the NCLR conference, and what it’s going to take is not the attitude of Rahm Emanuel, if this is a second-term issue. What it’s going to take is boldness by the president.”…

Immigration advocates privately identified Mr. Emanuel as an obstacle, criticizing his judgment that the issue would be painful for Democrats. Several such advocates tried to prevent his speaking last year at a march in Chicago. CounterPunch, a newsletter, reported that Mr. Salgado, an organizer of the march, argued for Mr. Emanuel to speak.

They don’t want to pass amnesty without the cover of a Republican president and a number of Republican senators.

Would love to hear what the RINO’s who insisted we needed to pass this year’s “comprehensive” (read: amnesty) immigration reform bill have to say now after they justified their support with the logic that it’s the best we can do and that Democrats will just pass a worse bill.

Dems know it’s a loser with the public and they won’t pass it unless they can shift at least some of the blame to Republicans.

No amnesty ’til 2012

Is Fred only serving one term?

JiangxiDad on July 25, 2007 at 2:20 PM

Key here is that he recognizes this is a realllllyyyy bad issue with most of Americans… ie.. voters.

He does NOT want it to be a campaign issue.

Dolor del corazón.

Slublog on July 25, 2007 at 2:21 PM

Give him a few weeks, he’ll do a 180. The Dems will do whatever it takes to get the Latino vote. WHATEVER it takes.

Tony737 on July 25, 2007 at 2:22 PM

thirteen28 on July 25, 2007 at 2:16 PM

Agreed. They don’t want to take any chance of getting the blowback for a failed policy.

amerpundit on July 25, 2007 at 2:25 PM

La Raza should be considered a verb.

The smart dems can look at poll numbers though and blow through the “huge, growing” statements about Hispanic voters. 1) there aren’t enough citizen Hispanics supportive of the legislation to justify pro-amnesty positions, despite the hysteria, 2) it’ll alienate working class whites and blacks.

TK on July 25, 2007 at 2:30 PM

why rule out amnesty to a key voting bloc before you absolutely

When Illegal Aliens are considered a key voting bloc, it is time for citizens to either take back their country or prepare to abandon it for another nation that is willing to protect its Borders AND its Ballot Boxes.

LegendHasIt on July 25, 2007 at 2:31 PM

No amnesty until 2012?

Translation:

Rahm Emanuel is predicting the EIGHTH amnesty to occur in 2012.

It all sounds totally reasonable. Nevertheless, we just barely escaped amnesty by spending weeks emailing and calling senators. If a party ignores its base, obviously reason no longer matters.

JiangxiDad on July 25, 2007 at 2:45 PM

Considering how immigration wasn’t mentioned in the last two Democratic debates (and the shamnesty was killed the day of the same day as the first one) you have to believe that this is just a horrible issue for Democrats.

Too bad so many Republicans are on the wrong side of it or it would be a tremendous issue to hit the Dems over the head with for the next year and a half.

Drew on July 25, 2007 at 2:48 PM

Mexico is like K-Mart or Chrysler. It needs a buyout and to be taken private. Is it a total loss, or salvageable? Get KKR or Goldman or somebody to run the numbers. If it’s a go, let’s just annex the damn place, make everybody US citizens, and move on to another project. If we could do Puerto Rico 100 years ago, we should be able to handle Mexico now.

JiangxiDad on July 25, 2007 at 2:50 PM

Hard to put the evil Republican spin on it now… The MSM will leave the issue alone since they can’t tar Republicans now, no need to comment on the bipartisan, majority of the nation that is opposed to illegal immigration in general and amnesty in specific.

You are right Allahpundit, Rahm knows those numbers quite well. His beloved Chicago knows what happens when Hispanics flex their politcal muscle. Democrats are in no hurry to lose the Black vote.

Theworldisnotenough on July 25, 2007 at 2:50 PM

Rahm Emanuel. Another member (unfortunately) of my State Of Illinois’ Evil Cabal. Fellow members include Sen Dickie Durbin, Gov Rod Blagoavich, Chicago Mayor Richie Daley, and of course…………………Obama.

Rahm, the Citizenship Nazi: “No Amnesty for You!”

Ah, the tables are turned for Rahm, the punk. Now they’re trying to run a campaign that includes the Presidency, with the distinct possibility of being involved in a shooting war that is coming under control, and with a huge political issue (amnesty) on which they are suddenly on the wrong side.

As usual, the Democrats are having a crisis of identity: “Can we tell them who we really are, or do we need to wear the mask?”

No, it’s “we might take on amnesty again if we can get enough Republicans to share the blame – and the electoral fallout that ensues.”

thirteen28 on July 25, 2007 at 2:59 PM

Sorry, Rahm — Rudy will be running for re-election in 2012, the GOP will have taken back control of Congress due to Rudy’s superior leadership, and you aint gettin’ no illegal amnesty then either.

Always Right on July 25, 2007 at 3:14 PM

You really want to get PO’d? Think about this.

If amnesty every passed, the very next political movement of the hard left would be for slave reparations.

From there on out, it’s all downhill. Women would be able to sue for not being allowed to vote until 1920. Ugly people would be able to sue the good looking for their lesser opportunities.

Stand strong or plan on giving up the farm.

The Race Card on July 25, 2007 at 3:15 PM

I consider this a ruse.

It takes pressure off candidates, he’s hoping it will leave us open to being blindsided and that’s probably the date he thinks will be the demographic tipping point after which even a national referendum would fail.

Remember doing nothing is a solution if inundation of the greatest Republic in history is the goal.

I’m not against Rudy for pres., (even though his authoritarian attitude often rubbed me the wrong way when I lived in NY while he was mayor), but don’t be so sure of his real attitudes towards illegals. NYC was a sanctuary city under Rudy, and he fought hard, up to the Supreme Court, to keep it that way. I’d still vote for him cause I think he’d slam our enemies.

JiangxiDad on July 25, 2007 at 3:29 PM

If they start their new baby boom now, the Americans can take Mexico in three generations. One gets so tired of seeing them on the defensive.

Kralizec on July 25, 2007 at 3:35 PM

Lets hope the government can do the right thing in the next 18 months and take the steps to run the illegals back to their home countries where they belong. We have got to reduce the number of illegals here now if the United States wants to continue to be The United States. Otherwise, the illegal immigrant culture of cheating, lying, and corruption will become irrevocably institutionalized into the American fabric.

Always Right on July 25, 2007 at 3:14 PM

LOL! Rudy would most likely be the first to hand out amnesty. Ignoring his pandering to conservative voters AFTER realizing shamnesty was about to fail, please give me one example of Rudy being against illegal immigration. The most extreme measure Rudy would take would be to suggest that we give them all an ID card allowing us to “know where they are.” This would allow him to locate them easier whenever any of his donors needed some cheap labor.

I don’t want to bring on the wrath of Allah, but Ron Paul has the best position on illegal immigration. He is the only candidate I have heard that wants to change the law to eliminate anchor babies, and he said that illegal immigrants were not the problem, all the stupid incentives the US has created in the private and public sectors to draw them is the problem. He wants to stop all the freebees and punish the employers like I do.

Really? Have you even heard of Tom Tancredo?

Have you even seen Ron Paul speak? Sometimes I get the feeling many of the people ranting and raving about the man have never even seen him. All it takes is 30 seconds and you realize the man is not all there.

Gregor on July 25, 2007 at 4:14 PM

Duncan Hunter is also ‘anti-’Anchor Baby”
HERE

LegendHasIt on July 25, 2007 at 4:41 PM

I have heard Hunter and Tancredo and like them both on immigration issues, but like Paul, I don’t think they have a chance. I’m still waiting in the weeds for some other Republican to come along. The only problem is that I have no idea who it could be. Newt is to the Dems like Hillary is to the Republicans. I like him, think he is smart, but I dont know what kind of administrator he would be. I would vote for Zell Miller before I voted for Rudy or McCain.

Both sides have a real lame lineup if you ask me.

Leaning that way. The Dems love saying things like, “We paid back the money” in public, but no one ever knows if it actually happened, so not prudent to take their word on this.

Is Fred only serving one term?

JiangxiDad on July 25, 2007 at 2:20 PM

He already did, plus a half, in the Senate. He did nothing important.

This was after he was a lobbyist and did so for a pro-choice group, but before he said he was always pro-life, which occured after Fredheads assured us he wasn’t an insider but also before we learned that he was so inconsequential in the Senate most of the Beltway Boys know him from Law & Order.

I believe Fred Thompson won #10,000 on The Onion’s 299 Million Least Influential People List. This is because he captures the attention of a few Fred?heads willing to cover for him, but is otherwise unknown by anyone who assosiates him with something other than acting.

I agree with you. I do not trust Rudy on illegal immigration nor on Supreme Court justices either. McCain was never a possibility simply because of ……..

Will Graham-amnesty still be around in 2012?

New Haven,Conn. The Mayor has decided to give illegals a welcome home ID card…So he is overiding US laws on his own accord..So if one of his new founded friends ends up raping, killing, DUI manslaughter, or etc etc.. I figure he’s liable for abating and abetting illegals, and opens himself up to a nice civil law suit. Help me out here I’m surly no lawyer..Look My Space just got sued for having let in sex offenders into their site..I wonder if they even took the time to do a criminal back ground check on their new friends..Even a wall 25ft high isn’t going to work if you have people and places like New Haven, Conn.

Elections have never changed in 200 years. Rarely does it come down to voting for the best person, it is voting for the lesser of two evils. The Dims have the amnesty debacle firmly wrapped around their necks. Rahm is trying to deflect it from ‘08 because he knows it is a losing position. Bet your ass the Dims will definitely ram amnesty down our throats if they get elected in ‘08. Lying is not a problem for them to use to get elected. Never has been.

You come here legally, you come here the right way or you stay the hell out of here. No, you don’t come here to support your family, or make a better life for them, you come here like all of our forfothers did, the right, legal way, not some stinking under the fence way. You have no rights, and until you make yourself legal, you have nothing. Stop wimpering, step up to the plate, do the right thing or get your sorry asses out of here. Here is one citizen that is reporting any suspects to ICE and will do so until they get their heads out of their asses and do the right thing.
