Arpaio launches hotline for tips on illegal immigrants

Reached for comment, a teary Geraldo Rivera sputtered, “It’s just like Nazi Germany. Except this time, they send you to Tijuana.”

Okay, he didn’t say that. But he will this afternoon on “The Big Story.” Stay tuned!

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Friday launched a hotline for Valley residents to report information about undocumented immigrants.

Details of exactly how the hotline will work and which tips will merit further investigation have not been ironed out. Officials say they aren’t sure how many and what types of calls will come in.

Still, Arpaio said deputies would investigate people only if they had “probable cause.”

What’s the obvious analogy here? Neighborhood watch, right? Wrong, Nazi.

“It makes every citizen, by proxy, an immigration cop,” said Muzaffar Chishti, director of the Migration Policy Institute’s Office at New York University School of Law. “This hard-line (plan) is a direct line on vigilantism,” he said.

Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox said she approves of Arpaio’s enforcement plan, but not the hotline.

“I think a lot of innocent people will get caught up in this, just because their skin’s brown,” Wilcox said. “We just need to make sure we’re not violating people’s civil rights, or get into racial profiling. The county may open itself up to a lot of liabilities.”

The Minutemen get that “vigilante” accusation tossed at them endlessly notwithstanding the fact that the weapon they’re most likely to confront illegals with is a water bottle. The left is forever fearful of the wave of violence that’s about to descend on illegals but not so fearful of violence actually committed by illegals themselves.

100 calls in the first 24 hours, incidentally.

God forbid Sheriff Joe Arpaio actually attempt to enforce the law. The left is going to be calling for his head on a silver platter…

doriangrey on July 23, 2007 at 2:03 PM

If I see someone rob a bank and call the police, I am a Nazi. If I see a kidnapping and report, I am a Nazi. If I see a man stealing and report I am a Nazi. If I see a man stealing my tax money, and report, I am a Nazi. If I see a man stealing healthcare, money for educating citizens, not paying taxes, robbing our government and report him, I am a Nazi.
I think these officals have gone Nutzi.

right2bright on July 23, 2007 at 2:07 PM

I’m kinda amused by this little trick too. I was surprised Arpaio didn’t come up with it first.

Bad Candy on July 23, 2007 at 2:07 PM

Its his right and duty to investigate all calls it will be interesting how fast the ACLU get involved

EricPWJohnson on July 23, 2007 at 2:08 PM

“Excuse me Maam, are you a citizen?”
“Yes”
“May I see your ID?”
“Right here Officer”
“Thank you Maam”
Thus ends any “innocent people “caught up in the desire to enforce our laws.

bbz123 on July 23, 2007 at 2:09 PM

I hope that Arpaio’s men don’t shoot any of the illegals, because Johnny Sutton will be watching.

peacenprosperity on July 23, 2007 at 2:10 PM

Way to go, Joe. I will be sending this story to my own Sheriff as well.

Damn straight. If you see something, say something.

Good for Sheriff Joe.

Well, if it takes local law enforcement to enforce federal law, so be it.

Remember that you do not need to be a national socialist to enforce federal law. You only need to responsible American citizen.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 23, 2007 at 2:27 PM

YAY Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Doing the work Washington won’t.

xplodeit on July 23, 2007 at 2:32 PM

The Panama City, Florida sheriff came up with a way to catch illegals. Have a bunch of squad cars pull up to construction yards and other workplaces and see who runs, catch ‘em, and find out their status. Clever, huh?

Bad Candy, while this is clever, it leaves the biggest perpetrators (the owners of the businesses) free to go on, as usual. That s/b the biggest focus and gets lost in the media, by all who’re supposed to follow the laws, and by us.

Entelechy on July 23, 2007 at 2:38 PM

Right on ! ! ! !

Every journey starts with the first step. We must discourage illegals any way we can legally. Next step: dry up the gravy train drawing them here.

saiga on July 23, 2007 at 2:39 PM

HA! I’d love to see an aerial view of Maricopa County right now! It would look like roaches scrambling for the kitchen baseboards after turning the light on in the middle of the night.

csdeven on July 23, 2007 at 2:41 PM

Maybe we will get lucky and Geraldo will move to Mexico in protest and take Shawn Penn and Alic Baldwin with him. They can elect St. Cindy mayor and name their new compound Holywood.

saiga on July 23, 2007 at 2:46 PM

Can we possibly elect a president that will appoint Sheriff Joe as Attorney General and sic the whole law enforcement apparatus and citizens on these illegals?

So do they actually go out and do anything about it once you call? That would be a groundbreaking policy.

“This hard-line (plan) is a direct line on vigilantism,” he said.

That’s not too much different than somebody who just got busted for any crime really, yelling out…tattletale!

Man it’s good to see a guy like Arpaio going after illegal aliens.

doriangrey on July 23, 2007 at 3:09 PM

Since when is calling into a HOTLINE vigilantism?

Definition for these schmucks:

Main Entry: vig·i·lan·te
Pronunciation: “vi-j&-’lan-tE
Function: noun
Etymology: Spanish, watchman, guard, from vigilante vigilant, from Latin vigilant-, vigilans
: a member of a volunteer committee organized to suppress and punish crime summarily (as when the processes of law are viewed as inadequate); broadly : a self-appointed doer of justice.

pattyann,

I think you can find those tees at cafe press, or you can try many of the conservative tee links found at various blogs.

I like to think of it as a really useful Neighborhood Watch.

liquidflorian on July 23, 2007 at 3:27 PM

I wonder if the good Sheriff would consider sneaking across the AZ/CA border into San Diego and do the job our law enforcement won’t do.

PatrickS on July 23, 2007 at 3:34 PM

not even 10 comments and someone mentioned shooting illegals

Geez

EricPWJohnson on July 23, 2007 at 3:35 PM

Hitler.

frankj on July 23, 2007 at 3:36 PM

If you see somebody being robbed you call 911
If you see somebody being assaulted you call 911
If you see a bunch of illegals violating our laws you call Sheriff Joe.

Can we deport Geraldo now and did Geraldo just say tj is the equivalent of being sent to a gas chamber???

Its either that or the American people will start enforcing the laws ourself.

Mojack420 on July 23, 2007 at 3:43 PM

“I think a lot of innocent people will get caught up in this, just because their skin’s brown,”

Uh, no, but maybe because they can’t speak English.

gmoonster on July 23, 2007 at 3:48 PM

Joe isn’t running a popularity contest , he is protecting his county by following the law the way he sees it. He gets reelected for his awesome work and Geraldo nobody can take him to task for it.

bones47 on July 23, 2007 at 3:48 PM

There you go willfully misunderstanding comments again, Eric.

Miss_Anthrope on July 23, 2007 at 3:53 PM

(send me royalties for the T-shirt proceeds )

Sheriff Joe has been training his deputies for some time.

He keeps my vote.

desertdweller on July 23, 2007 at 4:01 PM

As a Phoenix resident, I’m all for this one!!!
I’ve met Sheriff Joe and he truly does have the interest of the “citizens” of Arizona forefront in the things he does.
However, it will be interesting to see what happens with this if/when the dems nix the John Doe bill.
Will the people calling in these tips have to give their names just in case the illegal in question wants to sue later on?

I am very much against illegal immigration. However, as one who lives in Maricopa County, I can say with certainty that The Joe never met a camera he didn’t like. And if there aren’t any around, he usually invents some sort of stunt to draw them like flies.

I hope this isn’t another publicity-hound stunt by Sherf Joe, but with his track record, it’s so hard to tell….

psrch on July 23, 2007 at 4:07 PM

“This hard-line (plan) is a direct line on vigilantism,” he said.

Right. That’s why someone would use it to call the proper authorities. So they could be vigilantes.

As if that would be news? They screamed when he put the inmates in tent cities. They screamed when he made them wear pink boxers. They basically scream at everything Joe does that makes a criminal want NEVER to be in Joe’s place again.

“This hard-line (plan) is a direct line on vigilantism,” he said.

Doing the jobs DHS/ICE won’t do.

Undocumented Border Patrol Agents

Yeah, that too.

This is right in time with the furor over the John Doe provision. Citizens MUST take responsibility for reporting suspicious behavior. Hey CAIR/ACLU/La Raza, I didn’t say suspicious SKIN COLOR, I said BEHAVIOR. Somebody give them a Midol.

Sheriff Joe is great! Go, Joe!

I love that guy!

As the abolitionist Wendell Philips said:

Eternal Vigilance is the price of liberty.”

And of security.

And those who oppose it, I quote Samuel Adams:

“…may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

“It makes every citizen, by proxy, an immigration cop,” said Muzaffar Chishti, director of the Migration Policy Institute’s Office at New York University School of Law.

This would make the U.S. (or at least Maricopa County, AZ) the equivalent, not of Nazi Germany as Geraldo alleges, but of Mexico, where any non-Mexican can be kicked out of the country at the behest of any Mexican citizen.

My son gets stopped pretty regularly when he is out in town or driving. He doesn’t dress like a gang member, has no tatoos and doesn’t wear his hat all turned around. “Just checking on what his business is” is the excuse the cops give him. Oddly enough he has never been south of the border, speaks only english, and isn’t even of Hispanic lineage. Yet because he has dark brown skin he gets hassled. Oh, and he is a US citizen as well.

Doesn’t seem like a big deal until it happens to your own children.

Bradky on July 24, 2007 at 1:01 AM

Bradky on July 24, 2007 at 1:01 AM

So, what happened? Did the cops ‘check on his what his business was’ with a taser? Did they beat him with a nightstick? Did they cuff him and run him in for a fingerprinting and background check? Did he have to wave his fingers and say ‘These aren’t the droids you’re looking for?’

Oh wait…I get it…they made him feel uncomfortable for about 30 seconds. Boo hoo.

Bradky on July 24, 2007 at 1:26 PM

Bradky on July 24, 2007 at 1:26 PM

Name the constitutional right that your son was denied…I listed some things that might have crossed the line into unconstitutional territory had they actually occurred, but you never said that they happened to your son. Or maybe I just must have missed the part of the Constitution where they talked about freedom from being inconvenienced.

Tell you what, Bradky…I’ll let you in on a secret. I’m a law-abiding white male, yet I get extra scrutiny from the law sometimes when I’m out driving because of the car that I drive. I don’t buy this “I wasn’t doing anything, Dad…honest line you’ve been fed, because I know kids, but it’s entirely possible that the cop’s attention was attracted to your son’s car, a potentially thumping stereo system (again, not a racist thing because I have a system that can do the same), or maybe he’s just a crappy (read: normal teenage) driver.

James on July 24, 2007 at 3:09 PM

James on July 24, 2007 at 3:09 PM

None of the above – walking in a shopping district was his “crime”. Sorry you can’t talk with your kids and have so little trust in what they tell you — mine are honest and when it comes to things like this, I play both sides to make sure they is telling the truth. I also work very hard to teach them not to play the victim — not an easy task but I have been successful thus far.

If the police stopped any one of the obviously white friends he was walking with and did the same I’d say he overreacted. But that has never happened.

It’s always easy for a white guy (and I am one) to say “oh no big deal” because it is not a pattern they have to put up with. You get in and out of your car — he doesn’t have the same option with his skin.

Like I said until you walk a mile in someone else’s shoes you really don’t understand. Maybe you are lucky to live in a more “enlightened” part of the states but I can tell you that it is business as usual here in the south.
