Video: Olby fears impending Nazism, calls Bush a chickenhawk, etc etc

posted at 9:41 pm on July 19, 2007 by Allahpundit

I wasn’t going to clip this except that Ace IM’d me to say he’d heard this Pretty Vicious Rant was even more Pretty Vicious than usual. It isn’t really. The Nazi analogies have been a staple of Olby’s commentary since the very first one 11 months ago. The left likes to snark that for neocons it’s forever 1939 and the new Hitler is perpetually on the brink of invading Poland, but as usual that’s projection: for them it’s forever 1934 and the new Hitler is perpetually on the brink of unleashing the Gestapo. The only surprise here is his suggestion that we’re not suffering under Nazism now, but are rather merely laying the groundwork.

I don’t know what else to say that I haven’t said in the dozen other posts I’ve written about these little performance art pieces. Ace calls it “political pornography,” which is true insofar as the nutroots will be wanking to it later. I think it’s more like vaudeville, though, because with porn you’re not supposed to notice it’s a performance even though you know it is. Olby wants you to appreciate his theatrics. He spent hours scripting and rehearsing this abortion; the least you can do is admire his ability to affect outrage on cue. Note especially how he addresses Bush directly, as if speaking to him. Does he think Bush is watching? No. But he knows you are, and he wants you to know that he’s not afraid to pretend-get right up in the president’s face. Aren’t you impressed?

As for the substance of it, he’s pegging off of this jerky bit of demagoguery by the undersecretary of defense, which he doesn’t really care about. What he’s doing, and which some of the nutroots have already done in the past month or so, is getting out in front of the curve of political recriminations that’ll start after the withdrawal begins and America has to face the self-loathing it’ll feel from defeat. They’re pushing the meme that right-wingers are preparing to blame them for it, i.e., for having “stabbed America in the back,” even though most people understand it was Bush’s own failure to better prepare for the invasion and its aftermath that’s to blame. But even that’s disingenuous: they know they’ve got a political windfall coming from defeat (Harry Reid keeps chirping about it) and that young voters skew overwhelmingly Democratic thanks to Bush, so they’re not sincerely worried about recriminations. They’re simply trying to place any criticism of themselves out of bounds, be it their Trutherish nutroots fondness for conspiracy theories about the timing and seriousness of terrorist attacks or the transparent ardor with which some of them hope for defeat, the better to use it as a Teachable Moment for the next time some Rethuglican is feeling hubristic. So don’t criticize them. Because you know what happens if you criticize them? Nazism.

Bush has been in office for over six years and we STILL haven’t had our liberties taken away … what the hell is he waiting for?!

If Bush is Hitler, then why are we talking about elections in 2008? These idiot libs make no sense.

Tony737 on July 19, 2007 at 9:48 PM

Does he think Bush is watching? No. But he knows you are…

Not me. Unless it’s for the occaisional chuckle.

Is Olby still third in the cable news ratings? (And I use the word “news” lightly)

Criminal lack of planning? How does this guy come up with this crap? I swear he has a venomous left-wing word boggle machine that he periodically shakes and then WHAM-O!, an instant “special comment”.

I am so sick of these morons calling everyone who disagrees with them “Nazis.” Calling someone a Nazi is childish and naive. Political discourse is not calling someone a name – it’s actually engaging in intelligent and stimulating discussion about world events and their effect on everyone. However, Olbermann makes himself look like an idiot in ranting and raving about “Nazism” when all he’s doing is engaging in alarmism and rhetoric which simply makes no sense. Just because you say someone’s a Nazi doesn’t make it so.

It makes you look uneducated and disinterested in those things called “facts.”

That’s all I got.

Zorro on July 19, 2007 at 10:15 PM

You know with all the Nazi allusions and comparisions put out by the Left since, oh say, 1960, to deride anyone who opposes destroying America and the family unit, I’m beginning to think that the Nazis must have been, like conservatives, smart, morally-responsible people. That is what any space alien would conclude from watching this from orbit. This is the message the Left will leave us with when they finally die out. ( from their negative birth rate) Rather than tarnish conservatives by comparing them to nazis, they in fact, burnish nazis by comparing them the good people.

jihadwatcher on July 19, 2007 at 10:21 PM

What, no dramatic ‘whirl around to face camera 2′ switches? This Komment isn’t Speshul at all.

So, let me see if I’ve got this straight. It’s egregiously wrong to say that endorsing a withdrawl from Iraq will raise the expectations of our enemies in Iraq that we’re going to…leave Iraq under the control of the enemy?

Not sure I follow that one.

BKennedy on July 20, 2007 at 6:24 AM

If Bush were Hitler, Olby would have been sent to the concentration camp already, and turned into a lampshade.

And he knows it. Coward that he really is, he’d never dare say such things if it were true. He’d never dare criticize the REAL Nazis, because they’d be laughing at him as he sh*it his pants while they dragged his useless butt away to the gas chambers.

That’s the problem with these morons.

They throw blood libel around like there is no tomorrow, and they cheapen the real horror of the Nazis in the process. 6 to 8 million innocent people (Jews Gypsis, resistance fighters, POWs) were horribly murdered by Hitler in his rather unsophisticated version of “ethnic cleansing.”

They neither know nor care about the pain that the victims of the REAL Nazis felt. To them, it’s just a word, an epithet, that they can throw against us. They think it’s kewl to refer to us, their ideological enemies, as Nazis.

It’s like their assassination chic nonsense. If they knew what the backlash against them would be if Bush were assassinated, and how it would destroy their causes, if not costing them their freedom or very lives as a result of the backlash, they’d think twice about casually advocating his murder. But big mouth blowhard liberals, don’t really know any better, so they keep piling the blood libel on and on.

Allah pundit wrote:

They’re pushing the meme that right-wingers are preparing to blame them for it, i.e., for having “stabbed America in the back,”

And they’re right.

We ARE going to nail them with the truth. And we’re going to use power-nailers to drive the point home this time (unlike after Vietnam) if we have to. If they succeed in defeating American in Iraq, by the time we are done with them, America won’t trust them to catch dogs, much less run the country. When we get done with them, they’ll be out of power for decades to come. They know it and fear it, and mistakenly believe that they can head it off at the pass by passing a “fairness doctrine” and by spinning the truth.

They will be very unpleasently surprised….

Oh the wonderful things I could do in that eight minutes.
