The Hot Air team was in mourning this a.m. when one of our Media PCs misfired and we realized we hadn’t caught this eternal moment of comic irony. The man who put fake documents on the air in his haste to nail Bush, stood by while Mary Mapes and three execs took the fall, and as recently as last year reiterated that he stands by the story? Talking about personal responsibility and lecturing in his poor-man’s-Murrow way about good journalistic practice? And we didn’t get it?
I was filled with a heart-ache heretofore unknown. But like a good neighbor, Beyond The News was there.
What can you say?

Breathtaking lake of self-awareness.

“I’m big on personal responsibility”
O RLY?
Bad Candy on July 19, 2007 at 12:59 PM
Heh, I know Allah linked nearly the same thing as my last comment, but kicking around Dan Rather is fun for the whole family and I couldn’t resist.
Bad Candy on July 19, 2007 at 1:00 PM
That’s good stuff. I went to see him speak a couple of years ago and came away realizing this is one deluded guy. He said news was “something people need to know that someone, somewhere, doesn’t want them to know” and cautioned against the web, saying only the networks could provide “professional, spin-free news.”
Slublog on July 19, 2007 at 1:02 PM
It just makes his egregious behavior worse, and worse, and..
heldmyw on July 19, 2007 at 1:02 PM
He is big on Personal responsibility…. for everyone else…
Romeo13 on July 19, 2007 at 1:03 PM
I misread it as “I’m big on personality.”
meep on July 19, 2007 at 1:04 PM
He needs to “tart’ uo his act. Like walter Cronkite, ex CBS anchors experience intellectual meltdown sooner or later. It is like the Jimmy Carter syndrome.
Psuedo intellectual has bins; the MSM is full of them.
saiga on July 19, 2007 at 1:10 PM
Laugh of the day…personal responsibility and Dan Rather in the same sentence. How stupid does he think we are?
katieanne on July 19, 2007 at 1:11 PM
He’s big on Personal responsibility in journalistic ethical sort of way. Hmm, aren’t journalist and ethics oxymoron’s?
doriangrey on July 19, 2007 at 1:11 PM
other people’s personal responsibility, he means
Spirit of 1776 on July 19, 2007 at 1:13 PM
Does ANYONE trust the media anymore? Anyone , anywhere?
Only “Rather be lying” and “it hurt me” Diane Sawyer
There is no trust nor respect for the MSM, and very little in all of the media. ( Associated with al qaeda Press doesn’t count as media, they’re just frickin’ liars, below the level of the MSM)
shooter on July 19, 2007 at 1:16 PM
Priceless. Like seeing the former emperor of China mowing the lawn. Forced to abdicate and now speaking on a station nobody watches. Can you imagine all these bloated MSM whales speaking in empty studios to missing audiences? He’s not back, he’s sooooooooo gone.
JiangxiDad on July 19, 2007 at 1:21 PM
What is the frequency or your personal responsibility, Kenneth?
archon2001 on July 19, 2007 at 1:22 PM
“I’m big on holding other people personally
responsibilityresponsible.”There, fixed that one for your next interview, Dan.
Dusty on July 19, 2007 at 1:28 PM
We may think that Dan Rather is not responsible for the trugh, that’s because he believes he has a responsibilty for the Truth.
He can still stand behind his lie about a document because it served the higher Truth.
He may indeed be irresponsible, or then again he may be simply deluded.
TunaTalon on July 19, 2007 at 1:28 PM
He’s pretty funny!
I think he meant to say “I’m a big personality.”
stacman on July 19, 2007 at 1:32 PM
How about a little personal hygiene, Dan? Wash your profession out with soap.
RushBaby on July 19, 2007 at 1:37 PM
You know, he has yet to answer that one question: What is the frequency, Kenneth?
pilamaye on July 19, 2007 at 1:46 PM
The really frightening thing about Dan Rather is that he truly believes this bilge he’s been preaching for all these years. This is a great example of how a lie can be told by someone often enough that it becomes truth in his/her mind.
Jonas Parker on July 19, 2007 at 1:54 PM
Delusional has-been mouthpiece relegated to commentary on MSNBC.
I wan’t surprised to find him joining the libfest on the Chris Mouthews Sunday show, but I gagged a little watching Scarborough kiss his @ss and pay him compliments.
Barf.

“Like when people used to tell me, cheapen it up a litte, dumn it down. Now gosh i don’t want to do that.”
Oh - my - god. So when people used to talk to Dan Rather and give advice, the point they really wanted to make was that he is being too darn smart. He’s being too darn ethical. He’s being too darn journalistically reliable. Ooookay then.
Zetterson on July 19, 2007 at 2:06 PM
Get some shame, dude.
Zach on July 19, 2007 at 2:09 PM
Um, What?
Why in the world couldn’t ANYONE on the panel speak up! Maybe just casually mention the fake docs and see what he has to say. But why expect real journalism form journalists anymore? It’s only their job.
woodman on July 19, 2007 at 2:16 PM
Is he really that far removed from reali.. never mind.
Swinehound on July 19, 2007 at 2:17 PM
The new Dan Rather exercise tape for fat-minded journalists:
Cheapen it UP… Dumb it Dooooown 1
Cheapen it UP… Dumb it Dooooown 2
Cheapen it UP… Dumb it Dooooown 3
Cheapen it UP… Dumb it Dooooown One!
This is a four-count exercise.
Swinehound on July 19, 2007 at 2:21 PM
And there in the flesh, live on video is exactly why the tinfoil hatted leftist loons cannot hear, see or read: brainwashed!! Personal responsibility for them is their opponents being controlled by them…ala the “pajamas party” Reid had. They honestly, I believe, do not see any other side of anything. They are incapable of any responsibility for anything. If they are successful with losing in Iraq, pay close attention how they respond when the blood floods the streets of that country. They will do exactly what they did in Viet Nam: pretend nothing is happening while millions died as they did with Pol Pot, Mao, Stalin, and Ho Chi Min.
sharinlite on July 19, 2007 at 2:23 PM
I only believe him ½ of the time.
On-my-soap-box on July 19, 2007 at 2:38 PM
Or is that 1/4
On-my-soap-box on July 19, 2007 at 2:39 PM
I would have blown snot bubbles if I were setting at that table.
That is like:
Monica Lewinski saying: “I’m big on chastity”
Rosie O’Donnell saying: “I’m a size 6”
Michael Moore saying: “ I love America”
TheSitRep on July 19, 2007 at 2:56 PM
I think Dan is trying to get his old job back from Katie.

That man makes about as much sense as a roomful of Texas beagles playing Mah Jongg at the Pillsbury Bakeoff.

When is this guy…just going to ‘fade away’…???…who actually cares what he says and when he says it…???

Delirious or delusive or both ?
SIJ6141 on July 19, 2007 at 5:12 PM
Big on personal responsibility? When can we see this “New” Dan Blather?
hpk1942 on July 19, 2007 at 8:24 PM
Well, Dan-Rather-Not-Tell-The-Truth is personally responsible for being irresponsible when concerning President Bush’s Air Guard service.
BTW-for those who think that the Air Guard or Civil Air Patrol is some type of country club, I knew two people who served in the Air Guard and one was badly injured during a rescue mission but recovered, the other survived a bad plane crash (the crew walked away from that one, thank God).
The False Dervish on July 19, 2007 at 8:52 PM
I just wish people would stop giving him credibilty by putting him on air. How does he get time off from his full time job? Selling crap door to door
PowWow on July 19, 2007 at 9:02 PM

Thanks for the laugh Allah!
