Video: Byrd goes nuclear on dogfighting — as only he can

From the moment I read the article I knew we had to have the clip. And thanks to the magic, all-seeing Tivos of the boys at Beyond The News, we do. This is only part one — part two (and three?) will be here shortly — and it doesn’t really get hopping until about the 5:40 mark, but let me lead you into it by asking the question you’ll soon be asking yourself: Is it possible for a speech to be both totally righteous and totally absurd?
Incidentally, there’s nothing about Michael Vick except at the very beginning and even then he’s not mentioned by name. The Kleagle, as old as he is, is prescient enough not to say anything that might prejudice a pending case, especially one involving a black defendant. Vick’s corporate sponsors understandably aren’t being quite as cautious.

2.) Cannibalistic?
3.) This is crying out for a tachno remix.

When he paused for what seems like forever after asking, “What is it about madame President?” several times, do you think the poor woman in the chair was thinking “Oh God, is the old fool expecting an answer? What the hell is he even talking about?”

This kind of dog love speech is hate speech to our Muslim friends. Sen. Byrd, are you suggesting that God will judge these Muslim dog haters?

What? 25 minutes plus? Are you freakin’ kidding me? Slap it on a dvd and put it in my casket.
Dusty on July 19, 2007 at 8:49 PM
I imagine Byrd himself is so frustrated that by is own limitations he is not able to present his arguments as well as he would like to.
To dismiss him just because of his age is wrong. It is just harder by his sometimes ramblings to adsorb the facts he hides in his speeches.
That simply doesn’t make his points invalid.
It is worth the time to pick out the points hidden among the smoke.
CommentGuy on July 19, 2007 at 8:50 PM
We dismiss him because he’s a racist. Do you really think a bunch of thug gangsters give a crap what a Grand Kugala thinks?

Laws on the books? Just unenforced laws.
Can I get a testimony of equal passion for, lets say, immigration, John Doe, and senile walking cadavers.
Is there anyone else in the chamber, beside the page or whomever it is gathering that rambling speech repeating like some drunk on a bender.
I’m reminded of the Shinnin’ “All work and no play makes Byrd a dull boy”
Kini on July 19, 2007 at 9:02 PM
Well ya know what, Allah? I started watching these clips and laughed to the point of almost hurting. But by the time I got about half-way thru the second clip, I calmed down a bit and by the end of the third clip, I was completely enraged at the thought of dog-fighting. So I guess the answer to your question is YES!
Joshua P. Allem on July 19, 2007 at 9:05 PM
I cannot believe that I watch all three of these clips!
It would be very difficult to get a sound bite out of any of that ( Did I really say that? Did I really say that?)
Good lard! I think he offended our Moslem brothers with the bible quoting and references to not the Al-AHA.

I clicked the “PLAY” button on all 3 of the links at once. Other than shorter pauses, there was really no discernible change in the quality of the Kleagle’s speech.
Comment Guy says that it’s “worth the time to pick out the points hidden among the smoke.” I don’t have that much time.

I’m a huge softy when it comes animals and I when read stories in the headlines about cats, dogs, pets etc… being treated with cruelty for the simple pleasure in it, I can think of no punishment too harsh for those kinds of people.

I was raised dirt poor as a child and one of the places I lived was in a small cottage on the back area of a place that was an every weekend gathering for cock fighting rings.
I may disagree with his past political positions, but somehow age with its disabilities encroaching age is diminishing his delivery the man is slipping to where his positions are less political and more just human nature based.
This is a trend I have observed over the last ten or twelve years of following him.
Don’t discard him just on his age or delivery..read the thoughts because the man is naturally gravitating to his central ideas and expressing them as best he can.

Attempting to merge on the freeway while the main stream of trafic is going 70 plus MPH(in the slow lane) with a driver directly in front of you mergeing at 40 MPH.
Sooner or later someone is going to get killed because of that driver.

The poor old fella is embarrassing himself.
I sympathize with him and his “limitations” but it’s time for him the exit the roadway for a more efficient and cognitive driver.

I just don’t see the point in being mean about Byrd at this point, and I felt the same way about Strom Thurmond in his later years. In fact, I certain charm in both them. Of course, we shouldn’t have too many nearly senile in the Senate.
Also, I found Thurmond’s argument to be a subtantial argument–meaning he gave facts and used reasoning to come conclusions. After one’s read a few college freshmens’ writing papers, one learns how great that is.

Watching these videos = self-inflicted cruelty to a human.
A Democrat denouncing the tactics of our enemy? Instead of denouncing something ourside has done? You might as well wait for Elvis to show up and visit the Senate floor.

nottakingsides on July 19, 2007 at 9:49 PM
Bryd would be fine if he was at home on his porch swing nursing a sweet ice tea, reminiscing about his life, but what is WRONG is that he’s pulling down a 6 figure salary off taxpayer’s backs, plus perks. We are at war with a cruel and terrible enemy and this guy can hardly focus (his mind – much less his retinas) and won’t step down and make the space for someone who is more capable and alert. It’s selfish and self-serving, NOT in the interests of his state or the American people. The Dems hold on to him for his vote, nothing else.
Think of what we have to do of a day to pull down a 5 figure salary – and compare that to hundreds of thousands that the quivering man on the Senate floor is putting into his bank acount. Getting your money’s worth out of him?
naliaka on July 19, 2007 at 9:55 PM
I’m surprised that the old racist scum didn’t refer to Vick as a “race mongrel, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”
After all, that’s how the “Conscience of the Senate” usually refers to black people.
Which says rather a lot about the knuckledraggers inhabiting WV as well.

I was being sarcastic. I agree with the burn in h*ll to a degree. It’s not uncommon for people to bet on fighting animals. We have cock fighting that goes unchecked here. The only difference is that the byrd ends up being dinner. And in some cases, the dog also.
Don’t get me wrong, I just don’t like Byrd. Some might go as far as to ask what’s the difference between Vick and a abattoir?

Well, it’s actually a beautiful state where a lot of great people live. Apparently having an old senator (b/c the rest of the Senators in the U.S. are such stand up guys/ladies) makes them a bunch of “knuckledraggers.” Care to explain what that is Misha, oh enlightened one?

And no, I’m most certainly not disputing that WV is a pretty state and that there are, undoubtedly, many wonderful people living there, I’m just making the perfectly logical observation that a majority of its voting population have the ethics and morals of Julius Streicher or the IQ of wet pocket lint. Pick one.
Misha I on July 19, 2007 at 10:15 PM
So, because Byrd was involved with the KKK (yes, it’s despicable, I agree completely) 65 years ago for which he has profusely apologized, WV should forego a Senator that actually gets things down for the state or they are immoral? Maybe they should vote in someone like Kennedy who drinks and drives girls off bridges and has never apologized or Webb who says women are just in the Navy to bag cute sailors or writes kiddie porn but never apologizes either? I guess that makes ALL the citizens of Massachusetts and Virginia immoral or idiots too, right?

More Byrd
- The Cat
MirCat on July 19, 2007 at 10:26 PM
Ther is one more thing. The state of the State of W. Virginia is a lot more pathetic than other states. Byrd’s pork barrel didn’t creat new incentives, just one-time work projects. Very Third World in the effects. W. VA should look better/be doing better than it is.
Saw the same sort of decrepit which stubbornly remains around Niagra Falls, NY – upstate, also in Massachusetts – stagnant. But W. VA doesn’t have the crushing taxes of the other two states. Unions?
naliaka on July 19, 2007 at 10:26 PM
Would you like the full quote?:
He can “apologize profusely” until the heat death of the Universe as far as I’m concerned. That stain ain’t coming off no matter how much bleach he throws at it.
Only the ones voting for the immoral idiots which, it would appear, is a majority of the voting population of those two States. As is the case with WV.
And if you think that Sheets’ spending my money to have a bronze plaque with his name on it nailed to every last outhouse in WV is an endearing feature, then please reconsider.
It’s not.
Misha I on July 19, 2007 at 10:31 PM
He also said this:
Again, there is no excuse for his actions or his words from 65 years ago. But if he didn’t sincerely mean it I don’t think he’d bother to say it and at least he’s tried.
BTW, you don’t think that sounds a little ignorant or stereotypical, huh?
hollygolightly on July 19, 2007 at 10:41 PM
I was referring to his penchant for using taxpayers’ funds to erect “Robert K Byrd Memorial [Insert Name of Structure Here]” monuments to himself everywhere.
If you’d like, I’ll change “outhouse” to “jacuzzi.” Wouldn’t want to step on your toes, after all, and the point still stands.
As to his “apologies”, I repeat: I don’t care. Julius Streicher, were he alive, could apologize 24/7 on his bended knees for the things he said about Jews and I wouldn’t care about that either.
Misha I on July 19, 2007 at 10:50 PM

You can dislike Byrd all you want. I just don’t think calling the whole state “knuckledraggers” in outhouses is all that necessary.
hollygolightly on July 19, 2007 at 11:00 PM

as for allah’s evident outrage on this issue, I call arch-conservative hypocrisy! when glenn reynolds is blending puppies like there’s no tomorrow, not a peep, but all of a sudden, when a black man gets involved, it’s time to stick up for man’s best friend?
AdrianG on July 19, 2007 at 11:26 PM
What exactly did I not read? I read every word you wrote. I said you can dislike him all you want, which you’ve made clear you will regardless of his endless apologies. Byrd is not my dad or my pal so you can despise him all you wish and I couldn’t care less. As a conservative republican I don’t agree with him a lot either. I just didn’t like the stereotypical statements you used to put the whole state in a box, which was my only point.

Never understood why Senator Byrd has been nicknamed “Kleagle”, a Ku Klux Klan officer whose role is to recruit new members, when in fact he was the “Exalted Cyclops”, leader of a local Klan chapter, or Klanton as they were known. Give the man the credit he is due.
AndrewsDad on July 19, 2007 at 11:45 PM
Sigh. No, you didn’t. Against my better judgment and since you’re asking me a direct question, here goes (and then I’ll quit this tedious subject, I promise):
I said, re: W Virginians and knuckledragging:
That fell into the swamp, so I tried again, a little more directly this time:
That one burned down, then fell into the swamp. OK, so third time’s a charm; I tried again, only this time Massachusetts and Virginia had been thrown into the mix as well:
I didn’t have much luck explaining the “outhouse metaphor” either, which for some reason meant something entirely different to you than it did to me, which was simply a way of pointing out his penchant for earmarking his name onto every conceivable structure, big and small, for his own aggrandizement. Undeterred, I tried to explain that one too:
And then, after all of the above, you come back at me with this:
Tell me again that you read every word I wrote?
I really don’t know how to make it any clearer to you and, out of respect for this site and the other commenters here (not to mention the few remaining hairs on my head), I shall refrain from trying.
Thatisall.

Agreed that we should relinquish the hijack so that’s all here too.

I agree that animal cruelty is despicable, but to suggest that it warrants the death penalty is to cheapen the sentencing to death of those who have committed grievous crimes against humans.
How does that old buzzard keep getting elected by dems?
Mephistefales on July 20, 2007 at 2:29 AM
I thought his speech was actually quite good. It’s a non-partisan issue that I entirely agree with so I couldn’t care less which party he belongs to or about his age and history. Silence and repetition can be useful oratorical tools to drive a point home and keep or regain people’s attention. His age likely increased the amount of repetition and length of his silences to an awkward degree at certain points, but overall I thought it was an affective speech about an emotional topic.
I was only disappointed that he didn’t propose a bill calling for capital punishment in cases such as what we’ve been hearing about in the past few days. I’d support it whole-heartedly. The world would be a better place without this football player lowlife, (Vick?), assuming he’s guilty of the crimes that have been alleged. I’d execute him myself, given the opportunity.
FloatingRock on July 20, 2007 at 3:27 AM
Where’s his righteous indigation for all the unborn
fetuchildren slaughtered in our country by the big money-making abortion industry?Clear up this plague and then preach to us about the dogfighting plague, hypocrite!
The same King James Bible also reads “Lo, children are an heritage of theLord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a might man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate” (Psalm 127.3).
Is a special place reserved in hell for those who slaughter children, who are the crown of God’s creation, and vote to make it so, Mr. Byrd?

You’d think using his speeches against him would work, but that’s just not the case. Last year, Big Daddy’s challenger had a radio ad in heavy rotation featuring one of his speeches at Marshall University. Hardly a ripple in the ocean that is Byrd Country, though.
It’s one of those ‘one man’s trash is another’s treasure’ situations in many ways. His gift is our curse. He’s the only one that can walk in both worlds. He’s Ghost Rider.
