Video: Did MSNBC’s Countdown call Sen. David Vitter’s wife a “prostitute”?
posted at 5:49 pm on July 18, 2007 by Bryan
Yes and no. The host and guest tippy-toed up to calling Mrs. Vitter a “prostitute” during their chat last night, but the lower third graphic definitely called her a “ho.” The segment is causing a stir according to Inside Cable.
[Guest host Allison] Stewart was interviewing Radar’s Jeff Bercovici on the subject of Vitter and his wife’s choice of outfit selection for the statement Senator Vitter made on Monday.
While the segment played out, a series of lower thirds with rolled by saying things like “Don’t Mess with the Mrs.”, “Vitters’ Sweet Symphony”, “Fashion ho-pas?”, and “Dressed to Kill”. The entire segment concerned Mrs. Vitter’s fashion choice.
STEWART: When you first saw Mrs. Vitter standing by her man, what was your reaction?
BERCOVICI: I think you have to call it disbelief. The idea that somebody would wear that kind of outfit to any sort of crisis control press conference is hard to believe enough in itself. But to go to a conference where your are addressing your husband‘s infidelity with prostitutes and you yourself are looking like—apologies for this—but she‘s looking a little like a prostitute.
STEWART: She looks saucy, we‘ll say.
BERCOVICI: I think it brings up associations that you don‘t want to bring up in that situation.
STEWART: And he is really not in the position right now to say, honey, could you slip into a cardigan and some pearls?
BERCOVICI: Exactly.
It’s a red on red for us, as liberals at Kos and elsewhere go back and forth over whether the segment from premise to graphics was sexist and over the line or not. My take: It was. Mrs. Vitter is the victim in this whole thing, but both of MSNBC’s talkers treated her like she isn’t even human. But coming from MSNBC and particularly Olbermann’s gig it’s hardly surprising. We’re talking about a show that’s hosted by a man who routinely smears conservatives including our boss and makes tendentious associations between President Bush and Hitler that might make Keith Ellison think twice about uttering them. Countdown is a show that finds the line, draws it nice and bright, and then takes a flying leap over it at least once a fortnight.
But the one thing that no one’s talking about is what host Stewart was wearing when she made a big deal in her opening lines about Mrs. Vitter’s snug fitting, printed dress with a plunging V neckline.

Anyway, here’s the segment. Roll the video tape.

Plunging V-neck? What the heck. I think Allison looked more like a whore than Mrs. Vitter.
WoosterOh on July 18, 2007 at 5:58 PM
Those people are unbelievable. I see nothing unusual or inappropriate about Mrs. Vitter’s dress. She’s showing half the skin Ms. Stewart is. I guess by their standards (their standards for conservatives, that is), I myself dress like a prostitute at church.
tikvah on July 18, 2007 at 6:01 PM
Wow. Just wow. Unbe-freaking-lievable. The unmitigated temerity and gall for anyone on that joke of a network to criticize the wardrobe of a congressman’s wife by calling her a prostitute is unprecedented. Classic Kos “style”.
Nothing but a bunch of worthless piles of crap behind the desk at MSNBC. Shameless pricks.
MadisonConservative on July 18, 2007 at 6:04 PM
WTF? There was nothing sleazy about the way she was dressed. She is a very attractive woman. I think the libs are jealous because we Republican women are MUCH better looking than they are (e.g. MM vs. Cindy Sheehan, etc.)
Besides, maybe Bercovici can’t stand the idea of someone being more ‘fabulous’ than him.
Kimmer on July 18, 2007 at 6:05 PM
The smug little commentator looked like an ho-ho herself.
(And I don’t mean the snack cake.)
Mrs. Vitter should send these clowns a fruit basket with nothing but prunes.
Her husband being a goofball should bring her some sympathy, not cheap shots.
What did they say about Hillary’s outfits?
That they looked like a batch of sewn-together doormats, perhaps?
profitsbeard on July 18, 2007 at 6:05 PM
Maybe Vitter himself picked out the dress. Ever think of that? Hmmm? Hmmm?
Zach on July 18, 2007 at 6:05 PM
There was nothing wrong with her dress. These people are just scraping the bottom for anything bad to say about a Republican. Disgusting!
pugsly on July 18, 2007 at 6:09 PM
I didn’t see anything wrong with that dress. It’s “plunging” neck-line is nowhere near as low as the host’s!
But the one thing that no one’s talking about is what host Stewart was wearing when she made a big deal in her opening lines about Mrs. Vitter’s snug fitting, printed dress with a plunging V neckline.

What was she suppose to wear? A Burqa or perhaps at the least a hajib?
Listening to these media Ho’s is like listening to Avi Lewis.
Their making a joke of it. The only skankery is coming from MSNBC

I trust and believe Mrs. Vitter saw this coming when she reconciled with her husband.

And it’s Bryan’s post…
But anyway, there’s nothing the least bit wrong with that dress. Whereas the hostess’ dress has a neckline that is not only plunging, it’s also trying to dive overboard on both starboard and port.
What else but hypocrisy can you expect from Olbermann’s show?
Pablo on July 18, 2007 at 6:18 PM
I wonder why her husband felt the need to avail himself of the services provided by prostitutes and madam’s?
That may be one of the reasons for her pick of dress for her appearance on national television. I think she’s okay looking, even somewhat sexy, but I have to agree… that dress is somewhat reminiscent of Hollywwod & Vine on a Friday night.
If you’ve never been to L.A. (I grew up there), and in particular through the Hollywood & Vine area on a Frdiay or Saturday night, you probably can’t relate.
SilverStar830 on July 18, 2007 at 6:18 PM
I couldn’t get sound for a few seconds and, at first, I thought the host (Allison?) was ‘Ho’ they were talking about and not the real Mrs Vitter (who was shown later standing next to her husband…).
Only after the sound came up that I realized that I was only partially right. The host (Allison) was the whore and Mrs Vitter was the respectable one.

And I agree with everyone else. I don’t see how her dress is any better.
Esthier on July 18, 2007 at 6:24 PM
“Skankery?” The only skankery I saw was stewart and berkovici’s sneering, voyeuristic little segment. Unfortunately, stuff like this is likely going to get more and more prevalent. The enemedia has pretty much pealed off its mask and revealed the teeth and claws beneath.
There was nothing immodest about the cut of Mrs. Vitter’s dress. When I saw the first video, yesterday was it? I had a fleeting thought that the spotty print on the fabric was probably one that the professional wardrobe people would have advised her against (for technical TV-camera reasons). And that one large spot was odd.
RushBaby on July 18, 2007 at 6:25 PM
Perhaps it’s just modern times… but I don’t think that dress is at all inappropriate. I can see women wearing that dress to the office in the summer and not thinking twice about it. The animal print may be a little 90s or trailer parkish, but there’s nothing “prostitute” about it.
RightWinged on July 18, 2007 at 6:26 PM
I’m extremely offended by Allison Stewart (and Jeff Bercovici) calling Mrs. Vitter a whore, as I’m sure she would be if I called her a nappy-headed whore.
georgej on July 18, 2007 at 6:27 PM
Wow! Although, I have no firsthand experience with what a prostitute wears to work, if I saw Mrs. Vitter in that outfit I doubt I would be asking her for a date while flashing some cash.
FireDrake on July 18, 2007 at 6:28 PM
Um, there’s absolutely no difference between the host’s dress and Vitter’s wife’s dress, at least in terms of the amount of “reveal.”
My word. We knew they had no shame, so that’s not a shock, but sometimes the lack of awareness is just jaw-dropping.
marc@hubsandspokes on July 18, 2007 at 6:28 PM
Mrs. Vitter’s dress doesn’t qualify as remotely low cut here in the DFW area. She looks like a nun.
MSNBC is a failed network. They should pull out of the cable wars.
Stormy70 on July 18, 2007 at 6:29 PM
Yeah, doesn’t that describe her outfit to a T?
Esthier on July 18, 2007 at 6:29 PM
How intolerant & judgemental of them.
locomotivebreath1901 on July 18, 2007 at 6:32 PM
Ms. Stewart is obviously leaning to the left and doesn’t hold hypocritical ‘family values’opinions. Therefore, she wouldn’t see herself as wearing anything ‘sexy’ or ho-ish. Mrs. Vitter, on the other hand, believes in ‘family values’. Merely because she is right leaning, she must always dress as a school marm in printed flowers, and lace up to her chin line. Or at least, that’s how the MSNBC Olbermann viewership perceives it. Don’t you get it? She’s being hypocritical towards hoes in that dress.

These idiots are just marginalizing themselves.
They couldn’t have sounded more rediculous.

Chris Matthews and Keith Oberman are the biggest whores on television (MSNBC). They can’t get anyone, but their immediate families to watch the bias and lies that dominate both their agendas. Theu use hate like most lefties do to motivate viewership, but these guys have nothing else so it goes nowhere.

I guess that, if you’re going to “stand by your man,” you have to look like a Marxist Pig, right Mrs. Clinton?
OhEssYouCowboys on July 18, 2007 at 6:45 PM
It’s New Orleans in July! What was the woman supposed to wear a dark wool suit with a crisp white blouse?
I gotta say that whenever one goes out after the spouse’s fashion sense it means they got nothing! During the Roberts SCOTUS hearings, the fashion editor for the Washington Post went out after the Roberts kids for dressing “too white.” She repeated it during the Alito hearings- calling Mrs. Alito’s suit looking like a couch. This is the last refuge of tiny little partisan minds!
highhopes on July 18, 2007 at 6:55 PM
Actually, not that I consider either dress “slutty”, on a scale of sluttiness the host’s dress was MUCH sluttier than Mrs. Vitter’s. I repeat again:

Unprofessional, no wonder they’re at the bottom of the barrel. All they’ve got is eye candy.

They’re just pissed off because she didn’t throw him out on his ass, become bitter, and convert to their side.
Only women like Shrillary who are already on their side are worthy to be praised for their “selfless” forgiveness of their spouses.

Don Imus calls a woman a “ho” and he gets fired. Keith Olbermann calls a woman a “ho” and nothing happens.
SoulGlo on July 18, 2007 at 8:21 PM
Hmm.. Prior to viewing the video clip, I thought from the stills above that THAT was Mrs. Vitter. I was thinking she IS ‘hot’. Not slutty, merely fashionably dressed. and very pretty. Thinking: Something like that waiting for me at home and I’d never be tempted to ‘stray’, much less patronize a ‘pro’.
But after viewing the clip, I see that Mrs. Vitter is not a ‘hottie’, just a moderately attractive woman in the June Cleaver mode (without the accessorization of pearls and vacuum cleaner)… and not a bit ‘provocative’, much less slutty. One does wonder about the dark spot on her dress… If I wanted to be catty about her, I would have mentioned that, not the ‘plunging neckline’ etc.
Boy these liberal commentators are stupid. Well seasoned cast iron dutch oven over the campfire calling the polished stainless steel teapot black.
The beauty of Miss Stewart is ruined by her opening her mouth and exposing her vapidity and lack of sense of irony.
And as far as Mr.Bercovici: Wasn’t he one of the ‘stars’ on that cable TV show, “Queer Eye for the DNC” (or something like that)?
LegendHasIt on July 18, 2007 at 8:43 PM
Unfortunately, Mrs. vitter succumbed to lack of media savvy. As soon as I saw her, I knew she was in for hell.
She meade a forthright and resolute stand for love and honor. She is the absolute moral winner in this whole debacle. But politicians on the right have to get a clue as to how they are being perceived.
Sen. Vitter owes his wife…his life.
One other point the MSNBC guest was making was waaaayyy off base. He suggested that maybe she was wearing that type of dress, as some sort of redemptive ego stroke. The quote Allison made was about “going out for burgers when you have steak at home…” or something like that.
Problem with that analysis is that they dealt with this issue as a family a few years back.
Allison Stewart is pretty cute, and she is not known for her modest attire. Too bad she was not strong enough to steer her guest back into decency.
The Race Card on July 18, 2007 at 9:18 PM
It looks like Allison spends alot of time on her knees.
And her back. Then on the knees again. Before having money thrown on her back.
I’m not calling her a prostitute, but there it is.

Here’s what I think happened. That was Olby’s copy she was reading. Right down to the sound effects. He was a late no-show. They didn’t have time to change it. She had nothing else to wear. So she grabbed something out of his closet…allegedly.
PowWow on July 18, 2007 at 10:46 PM
It’s pretty obvious that Ms. Stewart and Mr.Bercovici have never seen a real N’Awlins ho.
And I also wonder if Ms. Stewart has ever been to Mardi Gras and shown her wares for beads.
She may be a leftist fool, but she does have a nice…set of wares.

I wouldn’t find Mrs. Vitter’s outfit inappropriate if she wore it to church, for Pete’s sake.

How exactly does this woman, the victim of a cheating husband in front of the nation, become a target of hatefulness? She was actually dressed very modestly, no cleavage in sight or anything else for that matter.
How exactly does a woman whose hubby gets a BJ in the oval office become revered as a feminist hero for standing by her man, but this woman shows up at a news conference to stand by her man, and b/c heaven forbid she’s not actually dressed like a man herself, she’s a ho??

I think maybe because her husband was running on that Christian Conservative platform. Bill Clinton was not.
News to Conservatives – stop setting yourself up. Alison Stewart is not running on the Christian Conservative ticket the last time I checked, she’s a silly ex-MTV VJay, so comparing her to Mrs. Vitter is utterly ridiculous.
If I were Mrs. Vitter I would have probably chose a safe feminine black suit with silk blouse and pearls. Most crisis control/life coach types would have suggested the same.
Here in Manhattan people were questioning it, my staunch “GOP Nancy Reagan like designer suit mother” thought the dress was a bit inappropriate. But then again Manhattan certainly isn’t New Orleans….I guess different strokes for different Republican folks.

AprilOrit on July 19, 2007 at 1:52 AM
What truly makes MSNBC disgusting is, given that the dress isn’t even remotely provocative, both commentators chose to pretend that it was. It’s bad enough that one of them would, but exactly how bad does the groupthink have to be that multiple people are willing to hawk the same ridiculous lie.
Kensington on July 19, 2007 at 3:28 AM
Va-va-va-voom? These idiots can’t really be that clueless. Looking like a prostitute? Saucy? I attend a church that suggests (doesn’t force) VERY modest dress standards, and that dress wouldn’t draw a bad look from anyone.
Cap sleeves, v-neck (but not exactly PLUNGING), knee-length or barely above it, belted waist, two-color print. I’m sorry, there’s nothing suggestive or provocative about it. It’s not drab, but it’s very normal. I wouldn’t stop my teen daughter from wearing that dress out of the house, and I’m pretty careful on that score.
If Vitter was a flaming RDDB would this reaction have ensued?
Freelancer on July 19, 2007 at 5:39 AM
Cultural gap. The sluts in the MSM looked at her dress, and said to themselves “huh; I wear that dress when I go out whoring around! Why’s she wearing it?”
Just miscommunication. They don’t know any regular girls.
Jaibones on July 19, 2007 at 7:20 AM
That clip is unbelievable. One of Vitters collegues need to get his permission then go to the floor of the senate and raise hell about this and demand an apology from the head of the network. It won’t happen though. So called conservatives in government are weak and scared and will claim they are just staying above it, not going down to their level. All the while the public perception of liberals is slowly and methodically poisened. It they had any guts they would send a talking memo around that said “anytime commenting on what a democrat said on msnbc, refer to the network as the one that calls the wives of conservatives hos”.
Isn’t this the network that is hosting the next democrat debate while the democrats won’t go on Fox? Every republican should be pointing that out on a daily basis until the democrat candidates are forced to make a statement. Ann Coulter makes brilliant and on the mark points while using provacative language and humor and conservatives help the leftists try to crucify her. These two no talent members of the self annointed elite go on tv and attack this woman in an insulting, tasteless and classless manner and conservatives will sit back and let them get away with it. That is almost as shameful as the comments themselves.
