Video: Mayors taking immigration policy into their own hands

There’s a word for the state of immigration law in the US: anarchy.
New Haven, Conn. – At a time when a rising number of states and cities are cracking down on illegal immigrants, New Haven, Conn., is reaching out to them with a unique perk: an ID card.
Besides serving as identification for bank services and if police ask for ID, the card can be used at municipal locations such as libraries, beaches, and parks – and as a debit card for city parking meters and at 15 downtown shops.http://michellemalkin.cachefly.net/hotair.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/cresitello.png
Cities – and critics – across the country are watching closely as New Haven prepares to hand out its first batch of cards July 24. The idea: integrate illegal immigrants into the community, protect them from crime that can happen because of a lack of documentation, and encourage them to be more willing to report crimes to police. Reaction to the first-of-a-kind program has been swift and sharp, illustrating the wide divide in US public opinion over the issue.
All of that is behind the rationale for sanctuary cities, and all it does is act as a magnet to attract more illegals. Sen. Dick Durbin’s stealth DREAM maneuvers would result in the same thing: more illegal immigration.
Donald Cresitello, the mayor of Morristown, NJ has two ideas for dealing with illegal immigration, one bad and one good. First, the bad: Grant them visas.
Link: sevenload.com
The mayor says that illegals are violating federal and state law, then offers a way to wave a wand and make them legal. How is that not amnesty?
Here’s his good idea: Deputize local police so they can enforce federal immigration law.
Link: sevenload.com
Take the two ideas together, and you have incoherence and selective law enforcement. You often catch big criminals by being vigilant in enforcing little crimes, like violating immigration law. The mayor would first make legal immigrants out of illegal ones (assuming they’ll pay the fines that he wants them to pay, which is not entirely a reasonable assumption), and only then use local police to enforce immigration law against criminal illegals and, presumably, illegals who didn’t pay the fines in order to get the visa he wants offered them. That’s not vigilance, it’s just adding a layer of patchwork over existing and mostly unenforced immigration law already on the books. If we had been vigilant on immigration law prior to 9-11, 9-11 probably wouldn’t have happened because nearly all of the hijackers were here in violation of immigration laws and used the falsified ID industry that thrives on illegal immigration to obtain the IDs they needed to board and hijack the aircraft they turned into missiles. Enforce the little laws, prevent the big crime.
Again, enforcement first. Fix the border. Fix the visa system. Then, and only then, will it be reasonable to talk about what to do about the millions of illegals who are already here.
Last thought: Watch both clips and pay attention to which of the proposals the MSNBC reporter predicts might be controversial.

Law makers support breaking the laws they make. Genius!

I have a simple idea, send the police out to any place where Mexican day laborers gather, round them up check their national status and deport any that are here illegally. Make the local and national news show this happening every single night and watch the illegals run for the border.
doriangrey on July 17, 2007 at 1:31 PM
How can you discover how much water a bucket holds if there’s a big hole the in the side?
We can’t get an accurate count of anybody if the flow back and and forth across the border is not somehow regulated.
We need a better border. Then we can start deporting those who are here illegally. They can stay if they immigrate. They can work here if they are registered with temporary work visas.
I don’t get why blanket amnesty has to be the cure-all.

I have an idea. Deport them to New Haven.

Recent hail storms in my area…result about 1/2 the homes are getting new roofs. Three or four roofing salesmen walk in my front gate every day, all middle class looking caucasians. Must be every roofing company in the area making a fortune right now.
Ask I write this you can hear the hammers going all through the community. Lots and lots of workers pounding away. Lots and lots of bank accounts getting stuffed. Lots and lots of perfectly good roofing going to the dump. Lots and lots of dollars headed south.
My point?…..I’ll leave it up to your imagination.
Limerick on July 17, 2007 at 1:39 PM
I’ll give New Haven credit for living up to its name.
I’ve heard of a city that sends police out to patrol near the areas where the day laborers gather. They go after whoever starts to run away, figuring that those who run have something (like their illegal status) to hide.

Romney did this with the State Police in MA. The day he left office and Deval Patrick, an ex-Clinton Assistatn Attorney General for Civil Rights, took over as Gov., he repealed it.

In related news, back-room negotiations between the US, Canada, and the continue to whack away at US sovereignty.
BillLalor on July 17, 2007 at 1:48 PM
Jerome Corsi’s The Late Great USA sounds like the perfect read. I heard him discuss it this morning.
Amnesty, slave labor and border insecurity are not my idea of a legacy. Are you listeneing, President Bush?
I have very 3 words left over the fight against illegal immigration that are not profane.
God Bless America!
The Race Card on July 17, 2007 at 1:50 PM
huh? That’s a new one. That really tugs at my heartstrings.
So we’re worrying about protecting illegals?
reaganaut on July 17, 2007 at 1:50 PM
I do not understand WHY IN THE NAME OF ALL THINGS HOLY, the law cannot verify country of origin from an automated birth certificate verification program!!!!!
This whole talk about national I.D. cards, {{{enter: blah, blah, blah}}} is so easily solved in my ever so humble opinion!!
If one is born in the U.S.A. their is a copy of the exact birth certificate-on-file card easily obtained from the State one is born!!!
I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF POLITICIANS INCOMPETENCE ON IMPLEMENTING ANY EFFICIENT SYSTEM ON ANY LAW OR PROCEDURE ALREADY IN PLACE!!!
ENOUGH ALREADY!!
NOBODY WOULD EVER BE SUCCESSFUL IN RUNNING A PRIVATE BUSINESS THE WAY POLITICIANS GET AWAY WITH RUNNING THE GOVERNMENT!!
I AM SO SICK OF IT!!!
Mcguyver on July 17, 2007 at 1:52 PM
I share your frustration. Two thoughts:
1.Birth certificates can only tell you who is a citizen by birth. Many people are legal citizens but born elsewhere.
2. In your own words, you state exactly why socialism/communism is far worse than capitalism. Hopefully, most Americans get it like you do.
JiangxiDad on July 17, 2007 at 2:05 PM
Some localities handle things differently.
MamaAJ on July 17, 2007 at 2:05 PM
They obviously would have a green card, student visa, residency card, etc.
Mcguyver on July 17, 2007 at 2:09 PM
Here in MN, Mayors Rybak and Coleman have done everything in their power to block sucessful ICE interdictions. I’m afraid where I live will not reap any benefits from any deputizing of local officers short of a US Supreme Court ruling prohibiting sanctuary cities.
MNDavenotPC on July 17, 2007 at 2:15 PM
More on that strange and wonderful idea we call “enforcing the laws.”
Here’s something that’s working, so of course you never hear much about it and certainly don’t hear anyone talking about expanding it.
MamaAJ on July 17, 2007 at 2:17 PM
That is a great link MamaAJ!!!
Mcguyver on July 17, 2007 at 2:19 PM
I will say this, in my own small way I’m letting illegals know I’m watching them. I wear my US Border Patrol cap always. You should see the reactions at McDonalds.
MNDavenotPC on July 17, 2007 at 2:22 PM
If they are here to take JOBS that Americans won’t do, why are they hanging out in the street looking for work?
peacenprosperity on July 17, 2007 at 2:25 PM
Where is the “debit” money for parking meters and downtown shops coming from?
RushBaby on July 17, 2007 at 2:31 PM
I think I can suggest a better solution. Instead of rounding up the illegals they should fake everyone out. Leak the news to the media that their is going to be a major raid at one of the businesses most renound for hiring illegals for their defacto slave labor. In preparation for this raid the media will broadcast a whole bunch of illegal immigrant sob stories. Now here’s the twist, instead of arresting the illegals, march right into the employers mansion and walk him out in handcuffs. Now that would be a huge public relations victory. It would take the race factor out of the equation. Do it on a nightly basis and before you know it the illegals will be back in their homelands.
Zetterson on July 17, 2007 at 2:53 PM
Well, if he makes them all legal first then how can any of them be illegal afterward for the second plan to work?
csdeven on July 17, 2007 at 3:04 PM
Morristown used to be a nice upscale place to live and work. I’m guessing that has changed?
It also boasts Benedict Arnold’s home, so go figure.
Hening on July 17, 2007 at 3:11 PM
You do know what they’re doing to your food, don’t you? It’s not a good idea to identify yourself as anti-illegal while ordering food at a restaurant.
Gregor on July 17, 2007 at 3:21 PM
I wonder if the ID cards will be accepted for voter registration?
Will they issue ID cards with just a name and a smile? Or will they require proof of their true identity before they issue the cards? Will they require birth certificates as proof of identity? Will the ID cards be able to be used as a stepping stone towards getting ID cards, driver’s licenses, and/or voter registration in other states? Or will their ID cards be tanatamount to the ID cards you can purchase otc at some downtown liquor stores?
It may cost a ton of money, and it may make some people all frowny faced :( but, here’s the solution to the millions of ILLEGALS in this country… SEND THEM ALL BACK! NOW! Then the MILLIONS of scoflaws can get in line for legal immigration like the thousands who already are.

I order coke I get a clean cup and I dispense… I’m not nuts…. good point, though
I’ll keep wearing the cap and I’m not anti illegal I’m pro law

Fine?
What Fine?
They ain’t gonna pay no stinking fine.
They don’t want no stinking fine.
They don’t need no stinking fine.
TheSitRep on July 17, 2007 at 3:42 PM
The mayor and governing council of New Haven ought to be arrested and prosecuted. Send them to prison as an example and watch the “sanctuary cities” vanish like evaporating rain puddles.
georgej on July 17, 2007 at 4:00 PM
From what we saw of public opinion during the amnesty debate, I didn’t see a “wide divide”, I saw a dominant consensus.
Harpoon on July 17, 2007 at 4:03 PM
If the statutes are supposed to be followed then here’s a clue, if people are soliciting work from street corners then 99.9% are in violation of those statutes.
If we can bust sidewalk princesses on street corners why not illegal aliens (maybe hookers should sue for sequel protection under the law)?
Another clue, have the Minutemen stage a protest across the street and the ones that grab their crotch and grind their hips, they can go first.
Unfortunately until the DC fools get the same kind of pressure to do this that they got during the last (and it won’t be the last) shamnesty this won’t happen because the Kennedy cabal knows that unless they have faux enforcement to hold hostage, Americans won’t tolerate the incredible, infuriating (the DREAM Act) giveaways his ‘family’ business demands.
We need a national network of law and order groups working together to combat the the taxpayer funded La Raza, Maldef and so on (the US Chamber of Commerce (John Gay’s unholy alliance).
Speakup on July 17, 2007 at 4:23 PM
The mayor of Hazelton, Pa., Lou Barletta, has the right idea.
Use existing laws to prevent illegals from getting work or renting housing that they are not allowed to have jobs or abodes criminally, because they are not supposed to be in the country in the first place.
profitsbeard on July 17, 2007 at 6:52 PM
This would work as long as the ACLU doesn’t step in and file lawsuits ad infinitum. I think it would be better to cut off all federal aid to sanctuary cities. No federal money for schools, cops, etc. You’d be surprised at how much federal money goes to cities. Dry up that money and the voters would get pretty pissed at their leaders.

Georgej, about your suggestion of arresting and prosecuting the City governance of New Haven: I believe that conspiricy to commit a misdemeanor is in itself a felony. So, even if aiding and abetting illegal immigration is a misdemeanor, the actions taken by the city council to engage in this criminal activity is a felony. I hope the U.S. Attorney for Connecticut reads this blog site.

Amnesty by another name. ALL Illegal aliens need to be identified and deported.
omegaram on July 17, 2007 at 9:59 PM
Waukegan,Ill…on Monday 7/16 they passed 287G..The illegals did one of their May Day Marches outside the courthouse..The Mex. trouble makers told all business in the area to hang anti-287G signsin their windows or they don’t shop there anymore. The city council had told them the only ones who they wanted to deport were the felons for murder and rape, that was it everyone else was safe to walk. Still not good enough for these people, they don’t even want the murderer’s and rapists deported..and thousands showed up to protest it the only ones I didn’t see were the Turbin Durbin and the Osama himself..with those two on your side you can see why the Illegals are so embolden in the great state of the ILL.(ill like in SICK)
Legions on July 17, 2007 at 10:00 PM
I want to know where the money is coming from to initiate this system? Is this taxpayer funded? Does anyone have more facts about this sunject?
This is off the wall. How can anyone living in New Haven, CT support this measure? The latest trick there now is for the thugs from nearby areas figured out that students from Yale are Liberal namby pamby’s and are 1) obviously unarmed, 2) are mostly from upper income backgrounds and therefore TERRIFIED of violence and 3) completely unable to defend themselves. So here you have a city that has a MAJOR delineation of race/income, with a pretty serious violent crime problem affecting our future leaders (God help us), and they are electing to spend precious money on working to incorporate ILLEGAL Immigrants into the already overstressed community? Good God. I don’t suppose they could be spending that money on stepped up Police patrols, or programs to educate under-privilaged kids, or domestic violence / drug/alcohol abuse programs, or trying to bring JOBS back to the city, or improving the harbor area to increase trade, or fixing the bridge that’s been closed for years, stressing the local already overused roadways, or updating the mass-transit system, or maybe, just maybe on some quality of life issues that could just possibly, give something back to all those idiots who are PAYING THEIR DAMN TAXES and GETTING NOTHING BACK FOR IT because of all the things our fearless leaders KEEP SPENDING THEM ON………
KMC1 on July 17, 2007 at 11:42 PM
Just put the New Haven i.d. on a national list of red flags to check immigration status.
There, problem solved.

Illegal Aliens are in a word: PARASITES!
They have stressed our society to the breaking point! Between them and the Islamist Fascist Jihadi’s we are close to a tipping point. One of two things will happen, either we will roll over and be smothered by the waves of invaders, or we will do what must be done. It will be bloody and horrific, but those are the options. There isn’t a lot of time left to decide either.
These things have a way of sliding over the edge in the blink of an eye. The majority of our politicians at all levels (federal, state and local) MUST GO!!! The Founders never intended that political office be a career choice.
Get ready, buy weapons and ammo, attend classes.
God Bless America!
