Audio: Gen. Peter Pace tours Ramadi on foot

Iraq’s entire al-Anbar province was once written off for lost. Six months ago it was dominated by al Qaeda and full of terrorist monsters. Now it’s awakened to the point that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was able to amble about a marketplace and buy fruits and vegetables and shake hands with locals in Ramadi. The segment below is from CNN’s American Morning, earlier today.

Did Pace have security with him? Yes, he did. But according to the CNN reporter who accompanied Gen. Pace on his tour, the security wasn’t as extensive as that which Sen. John McCain required when he walked through Baghdad a few months ago. CNN’s correspondent, who promised to deliver video of the stroll before too long, described the security as “pretty standard stuff.”

CNN’s Barbara Starr: “it’s an extraordinary thing.”

Time to pull out before we win!

TheBigOldDog on July 17, 2007 at 6:23 PM

A free press preserves itself by exercising itself. How grand a plan our constitutional framers had.

It should seem surreal to recieve instant dispatches from war correspondents. But, it doesn’t. It’s the expected norm.

A tangential point for sure. But sometimes, I’m just damn glad to be an American.

The Race Card on July 17, 2007 at 6:26 PM

I can’t imagine walking in Ramadi. That place was the most dangerous place on earth last time I was in Iraq.

Guardian on July 17, 2007 at 6:27 PM

The interesting question is, what would happen if OBL walked through Ramadi?

Oh, right. Dead terrorists don’t walk.

Editor on July 17, 2007 at 6:33 PM

I done said it last night and I’m fixin’ to say it again:

Pulling out of Iraq now is like pulling out of the war in the Pacific on the first of June, 1942, or pulling out of the war in the ETO on the first of June, 1944

Janos Hunyadi on July 17, 2007 at 6:37 PM

It makes one weep that this great American man was attempted to be shamed by one of the weakest American men around, the Reaper – if we wouldn’t know better which one of them still is a real man.

General Pace walking on the streets of Ramadi, while our poor congressmen sleep on cots in D.C. arguing for our
surrender to Al Quaida.

My daughter has a friend who is currently in Ramadi, due to come home shortly for his mid tour leave I might add, and he has said it is quiet. He was on a regularly scheduled rotation that just happened to fall in with the “surge”. All of his buddies have told him for the love of g_d don’t watch the news once he gets home. They told him to go out have a good time, visit family and friends but leave the damn tv off when it time for news. He isn’t old enough to drink legally but I have already let him know I have a couple of Samuel Adams in the fridge waiting on him.

So are you saying that the vast majority of American troops can leave Iraq in about a year?

What a sad day in our country. I wonder if Reid is brave enough to walk through the halls of congress w/out a security detail. I think not. I’m sure he keeps his dog (aka the San Fran Gran Nan) quite close…

Go Pace, Go!

Entelechy on July 17, 2007 at 7:06 PM

Now lets see if I have this correct: the threat to America is AQ [not to be confused with AQ in Iraq also known as AQ in Mesopotamia, which only took the AQ name as they thought that it would be "cool"], a terrorist organization located throughout the world with Osama probably still alive, yet Gen Pace is mentioning sending even more troops to nation-build Iraq while the Iraqi government plans to take the entire month of August off because it is too hot while American troops do the melting and the heavy lifting.

Am I reading this right?

Someone better check the air ventilation system at the Pentagon.

Do you mean there was no August in Iraq in the previous 5 years?

LakeRuins on July 17, 2007 at 7:11 PM

The threat to America is AQ, the effort of the US armed forces needs to focus on capturing and destroying AQ, not nation building in Iraq while the Iraqi government takes the entire month of August off and continues dithering governing their own sovereign country.

MB4 on July 17, 2007 at 7:18 PM

MB4 on July 17, 2007 at 7:18 PM

I’m sorry but, part of securing a nation includes nation building. Now I agree it is absurd for the Iraqi govertment to do that. One thing you have to realize though is that they are a very young country and they will make mistakes. I mean we’ve been doing it for more than 200 years and look how screwed up our congress is.

boomer on July 17, 2007 at 7:29 PM

The Iraqi people are fighting because their government is dysfunctional, because of Paul Bremers brilliant ideas to fire (de-bathify) anyone with competence in the Iraqi government and to dismiss the entire Iraqi Army from active service.

Brilliant ideas.

I’m truly shocked that CNN is covering this…what the General is doing is counter-productive to their agenda.

jediwebdude on July 17, 2007 at 7:43 PM

and to dismiss the entire Iraqi Army from active service.

I am so bone-weary of that old, discredited talking point. Where do you think the #$%& Iraqi military was when we finished running through them? 1) Dead, 2) Fled, or 3) Both.

The vast bulk of their Army was made up of peasant conscripts. They unassed the AO/melted away. The pros were the one who were dead (because they had stood and fought) or the surviving Republican Guard. Sure, why don’t we tell the good people of Iraq “we are here to liberate you! Now if you’ll excuse us, it’s pay day for the Hammurabi Brigade”.

Cripes, you sound like you would have argued for keeping the Waffen SS under arms in 1945…

MB4 on July 17, 2007 at 7:40 PM

Janos Hunyadi on July 17, 2007 at 7:59 PM

The current surge strategy as designed by Freddy Kagan in the American Enterprise Institute is designed to buy time for the Iraqi government to stand on its own; to pass reconciliation legislation amongst the Sunni/Shia/Kurd as well as sharing oil revenues; the same Iraqi government that plans to take the entire month of August off while America does its heavy lifting.

This person has probably finished High School and he has been in Iraq for a long time and his comment displays just how worthwhile it is for America’s continued sacrifice:

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said on Saturday, “We say in full confidence that we are able, God willing, to take the responsibility completely in running the security file if the international forces withdraw at any time they want.”

The democratically elected leader of the sovereign nation of Iraq, fully recognized by the United Nations and international law, has just stated he has full confidence that we are able, God willing, to take the responsibility. What part of that do you license anyone else to reason they have the right to say otherwise?

Usually not that young though, but thank you for the compliment. It is appreciated.

General Pace may have failed to end the Iraq war but he is still an honorable man.
When the Dems declared that he could not be confirmed for more time as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Secretary Gates asked him to resign. General Pace declined to resign while Marines were under fire.

Senator Reid may have failed to end the Iraq war but he is still majority leader.
Yes the post ends here.

terrorists will slide into America OR that he will have to admit that he did a charly foxtrot.

Slowly, dimly, and in spite of the “good news” blackout, some in the traitor MSM are getting the message. Or more correctly, letting the message get through to the people.

I did NOT hear this story on the New Hour.

I did NOT hear this story on the network news that I watched.

But it got through on CNN.

And anyone who knows anything about the military knows that 4 star generals, especially the Chariman of the Joint Chiefs, DO NOT blithly stroll about in a hot battlefield.

Most of the traitor MSM has been working overtime to tell the story that we have already lost in Iraq. From US KIA and suicide bombings, to “analysts” pontificating on how the surge is not working.

And then Gen Pace goes strolls through the marketplace. There won’t be any reporters laughing like they did at McCain when he told a similar story this time.

Somebody ought to ask Harry Reid, Carl Levin, and Dick “The Turbin” Durbin about this, on the record, and see how badly they stammer out an answer.
