“New” Osama video released; Update: Mystery solved — new video matches video shot in 2001; Update: Zawahiri directed Red Mosque jihadis? Update: It’s a re-run

Laura Mansfield’s got it, of course, as does CNN. Interestingly, the tape hasn’t been formally released yet by as-Sahab; those in the know, like Mansfield and CNN’s people abroad, know where to find this crap online before it hits the jihadi websites. Presumably so does the CIA, but who knows anymore?

It’s “new” but not really new — and yet potentially significant.

Osama bin Laden stresses the importance of martyrdom for Muslim causes in a videotape that purportedly contains a 50-second message from the al Qaeda leader.

The 40-minute videotape, whose audio was being translated from Arabic by CNN, was intercepted before it was to appear on several Islamist Web sites known for carrying statements from al Qaeda and other radical groups…

Octavia Nasr, CNN’s senior editor for Arab affairs, said the videotape does not appear to be new.

The environment shown is similar to that on releases made before the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, in which bin Laden is seen in the company of some of the hijackers, Nasr said.

Some of the backdrops also resemble those shown in videos when the U.S. attacks against the Taliban in Afghanistan began not long after the 9/11 attacks, she added.

Follow the link to Mansfield’s site to watch the clip. No subtitles, but here’s her translation:

The seal of the prophets and all messengers (reference to Prophet Mohammed), prayers and peace be upon him, wished this status.

So be alert, be wise and think.

What is this status that the best of mankind wished for himself?

He wished to be a martyr.

He himself said ‘By Him in Whose Hands my life is! I would love to attack and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred.’

So this whole broad life is summarized by he who was inspired by God, the lord of the heavens and earth, praised and exalted is He.

This glorious prophet who was inspired by God summarized this entire life by these words. He wished upon himself this status. Happy is the one who was chosen by god as a martyr.

The feds are already worried about Zawahiri’s new tape containing some sort of signal to jihadis in the field. The fact that it’s followed by the first new Osama video in almost three years won’t do anything to reassure them. It’s also worth noting that the quote in the middle here is repeated three times, just like the quote at the end of the Zawahiri tape that’s got the feds nervous. It comes from Volume 4, Book 52, Number 54 of the Bukhari translation of the hadith; Zawahiri’s quote came from Mohammed’s last sermon. Whether any of that is significant in and of itself, I have no idea.

Update: “Experts who study al Qaeda videos told ABC News they had not previously seen the clip of bin Laden, which was released with little fanfare and contains no date references, but say it is most likely an unreleased portion of an earlier message.”

Update: Nice work by Jim Hoft here. It’s not ironclad, but if the new video is new then he’s had that hat and jacket for a long time.

Update: Mystery solved, thanks to Jim. I googled around based on the screencap he found and discovered this article at CBS from May 2002. Luckily they’re exceptionally good about archiving their video so you can watch a clip from that Bin Laden tape right in the sidebar at the link. Compare a still from that one…

cbs.jpg

…with a still from the clip released today, noting the sloping mountain on the left and the leaves overhead:

mans.jpg

Same video. Incidentally, that earlier video was obtained by something called the Al-Ansaar Islamic news agency, which is based in Britain. They claimed in May 2002 that they got it from a Pakistani intelligence officer a month earlier and that parts had been shot in an Afghan town called Spinboldak in March. But someone who would know disagrees:

[T]he chief editor of the Qatar-based Arab television station Al-Jazeera, which has aired videos showing bin Laden in the past, said Monday that people at the station had seen the same tape months ago and believed it was recorded in October.

“This is the same tape that we had four months ago, which we didn’t show because we didn’t think it was newsworthy,” said the editor, Ibrahim Helal. “There was nothing new in it and seemed to be a PR stunt. We think it was recorded sometime in October [2001].”

That makes more sense, as Osama probably wouldn’t have lingered long in Afghanistan after the assault on Tora Bora in November.

Update: One other thing I just noticed to confirm the match — you can see he’s explicitly referring to the Bukhari translation of the hadith in the CBS still. That’s the same translation the quote from “today’s” video comes from.

Update: Did Zawahiri goad the Ghazi boys into precipitating the Red Mosque standoff? “Senior intel officials” claim that letters from him were found by Pakistani troops inside the building after the assault finally ended, and that AQ personnel might have been on scene:

Government sources said up to 18 foreign fighters — including Uzbeks, Egyptians and several Afghans — had arrived weeks before the final shootout and set up firing ranges to teach students, including children, how to handle weapons…

Ministers blamed the presence of foreign fighters for the breakdown of negotiations at the Red Mosque just as they seemed about to reach a deal to end the standoff peacefully.

According to government sources and western diplomats, Al-Qaeda sought martyrdom instead. “They wanted a poster boy for Pakistan and Ghazi was the perfect guy,” said one western diplomat.

Yeah, this lets them tell their zombie followers that whatever it is they’re about to do in Pakistan is “self-defense” and revenge for Musharraf’s atrocities against the Mosque. The left loves loves loves Reichstag fire analogies, but I suspect they’ll be slow to see a possible twist on it here from Zawahiri — precipitating a crisis and then exploiting it as a pretext for a preconceived terror campaign not by starting the fire yourself, but by forcing the government to act and “martyr” you. Makes sense, but who knows if it’s true? All we have to go on is circumstantial evidence.

At least five bodies of foreign jihadis have already been recovered, FYI.

Update: The feared fundie outcry after the Red Mosque assault has thankfully not materialized, which may be a sign that Pakistan isn’t as close to the brink as we think.

Update: As it turns out, not only was the Osama footage filmed long ago, the clip itself isn’t new. Senior intel officials say it aired in April 2002.

I wonder if the left will continue to criticize Chertoff for his “gut feeling”? The Jihadists hate us and they will attack again no matter what appeasement program Congress comes up with. I am praying that our ability to stop attacks before they occur in the U.S. continues.

Why did OBL resort to using a tape containing Zarqawi, instead of creating a new one?

amerpundit on July 14, 2007 at 4:11 PM

Despiration video release? As most over the last few weeks seem. Especially after the bumbling attempt made in the UK by supposed learned men.

If this is AQ’s best attempt to show that UBL is still alive and relevant then he’s vary dead and only a little relevant.

“He wished to be a martyr.”

I’d love to help UBL attain that goal.

Once should be enough tho, as satan has lots of ‘play time’ set aside for this one when he goes straight to hell.

If you were trying to rally your troops, wouldn’t you want to release a video showing you recently alive, well, and in control of your group? Instead, OBL releases one that shows him with a terrorist who’s been dead over a year.

Mansfields piece on “You’ve Got Mail”, though she did not use that term, but should of, and the “CyberJihad”, is in interesting thought.

Maybe we see that cyber-jihad is an addiction, that slowly destroys the lives of normal people, doctors included, that have nothing left to do, but commit jihad.

Now I dont know of anyone that had a cyber affair that destroyed their life, but the internet is addictive. For some it fills a void and they dont need much interaction with the “real” world, for some if possible, no interaction.

Some like the porn, some like the politics, some build their dream websites, some read BB on jihad.

What separates them all? Who knows, but it is obvious that some are a little more stable than others who can balance their lives from fantasy to reality.

I took it a little further than she did.

KBird on July 14, 2007 at 4:47 PM

Here’s my conspiracy theory:

Since AQ and the jihadists are monitoring the internet, they no doubt have read about the Dims in the last week raising the cry “why haven’t we caught OSB yet,” AQ may have released this little nugget to show OSB is “alive” to help the Dims try to put more pressure on President Bush. If it were ever to leak that OSB is pushing up opium plants, then the Dims have to find a new meme.

DfDeportation on July 14, 2007 at 5:00 PM

So while OBL tells his followers there is glory in killing yourself for Islam, what is his problem? Why doesn’t he just jump up in front of about 10 U.S. Marine’s holding his beloved gun? Lead by example, I always say.

And how stupid are Muslims to think that they are doing what Allah wants when OBL had not done what Allah wants.

The best thing we can do is put all these poor dumb ba–ards out of their misery and send them to Allah.
Take the gloves off of our military and let them do their job.

Shhhhh….keep it down WoosterOh, if too many moonbat toofers hear that and start to realize they are wrong then sales of books, CD’s, and DVD’s will plummet at Prison Planet and I have stock in the company! (sarc)

He himself said ‘By Him in Whose Hands my life is! I would love to attack and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred.’

But you’ll notice that the prophet (a curse be upon him) never martyred himself and neither do any of these groups leaders like OBL and his butt-buddy Zawahiri!

Could it be they don’t martyr themselves because life is too good for them what with all the attention they’re getting, the adoration from their Arab “brothers” and the “rock-star” fame stroking their warped egos, not to mention all the burkah clad groupies they can have their pick of without having to go to paradise for virgins!

The interesting and hypocritical thing about this is it’s obvious they (the Jihadists) have replaced their reverence and idolization for the prophet Mohammed (piss be upon him) for the reverence and idolization for martyrdom, which according to their own religion is idolatry making them apostates subject to death…nothing says scary like delusional, insane religious fascist zealot hypocrites with weapons!

The fact that it’s followed by the first new Osama video in almost three years won’t do anything to reassure them. It’s also worth noting that the quote in the middle here is repeated three times, just like the quote at the end of the Zawahiri tape that’s got the feds nervous.

It appears we have had the required three warnings of an upcomming attack by al Qaeda. Those requiring complete safety need to occupy the Capital in Washington DC, specifically the Senate and House chambers and in New York, the New York Times building. I would be foolish for al Qaeda to attack their closest allies.

Sounds like a jihadist release to coincide with a next message from Zawahiri that Osama died recently, either in the red Mosque or he was kicked in the head by a mule.

I’m praying for mule.

profitsbeard on July 14, 2007 at 5:44 PM

I’m praying for mule.

Great that is all we need. Since the Donkey is the symbol of the democratic party that would give them reason to claim that they were the ones to get Osama.

bTW Obama is now arguing that he wants to shift US troops from Iraq to Afganistan where the war really is.

Guess he believes Osama is alive.

William Amos on July 14, 2007 at 6:08 PM

All the recent flurry of messages would indicate signaling an attack or as another poster mentioned it could be to see how we are responding.

Another (and probably much too hopeful) theory would be that with Mush cracking down on militants in Pakistan and the obvious breakdown of the “peace deal” he made with the tribal regions last year Mush is finally taking the gloves off and is preparing to go into the tribal regions full force. Thus pushing OBL (if he’s still alive) and his butt buddy Zawahiri into the waiting gun sights of US troops on the Afghan side of the border.

A squeeze play perhaps, and all these messages they are sending is their final push to stir up the militants before they die as they know the end game is near, a sort of final curtain call?

A guy can dream, right?

It’s also worth noting that the quote in the middle here is repeated three times, just like the quote at the end of the Zawahiri tape that’s got the feds nervous. It comes from Volume 4, Book 52, Number 54 of the Bukhari translation of the hadith; Zawahiri’s quote came from Mohammed’s last sermon. Whether any of that is significant in and of itself, I have no idea.

Under Islamic law, you are required to warn your victim three times before you strike. I’d say that might be what has our intelligence agencies concerned.

From the link in one of the Headlines at top of site:

“RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Rizana Nafeek, a 19-year housemaid from Sri Lanka, is on death row because the baby in her care died while she was bottle-feeding him. If her appeal is turned down, she will be taken to a public square to be publicly beheaded.”

Our troops should leave Iraq and on their way home maybe they can swing by Saudi Arabia and hang all of the Saudi Royals and all of their Imams.

Just a mid afternoon thought.

OK, so first, we have the latest rant-o-rama from Zowie Zawahiri, and now we get a video of Bin Latte with Mocha Sprinkles that looks like it was actually doctored from a piece of video from 2001. Meanwhile, the mainstream media is literally going ga-ga and spectulation is flying out of control all over the place on what all this means.

And how much you want to bet that this is exactly what Al Qaeda is hoping would happen? So as to maybe throw all this up as a smokescreen and get everyone to look at all this very closely, while something else may be coming down the pike from the other direction?

Something is definetely going on, and it is starting to damage my calm.

Do you really think the Iranian Shiites are going to let Al Q Sunnis take over Iraq?

When I first heard the quote from Chertoff (his “gut feeling…”) it crossed my mind that he chose the word “gut” for a reason. Was he sending a message to AQ that we knew they had a plan to tamper with our food supply (hoping to stop them by revealing their plan? I want sooo much to believe our government is that smart.

NightmareOnKStreet on July 15, 2007 at 2:23 AM

NightmareOnKStreet

I can assure you that if there is a way to taint the food supply, AQ and OBL only has to find back issues of the NYTimes. I am willing to bet they drew up a play to be used in the 4th quarter when down by 2 TD’s with the clock running out.

But as far as saying gut to let OBL know that we know? Come on, I have to take that as a joke.

WoosterOh on July 15, 2007 at 3:00 AM

I always worry that the day the DEMs find any proof or collectively decide that OBL is actually dead they’ll declare “job done” and try even harder to call the whole thing off.

Honestly AQ would have to be pretty stupid to attack the US before the November 2008 elections. That would completely derail the DEMs plans for surrender as soon as they get in office.

Osama is dead, and that is my gut feeling. This tape being released is just a desperation ploy, by his underlings.

There is my SM (Stormy’s Media) telling you what you need to know about today’s news.

Stormy70 on July 15, 2007 at 9:30 AM

First anybody who thinks Al Queda hasn’t been planning another attack on the Great Satan, that would be America, you really are living with your head in the sand. I doubt a day goes by without some sort of plan being made or plot being being hatched. We have just been lucky, so the release of this tape makes me no less nor any more aware.
Second, like a lot of other folks I think UBL is dead. What I would like to see is more people in the public eye state just such a thing. The reason they don’t is pure politics. They are afraid that if they do and he shows up then they will get hammered for spreading lies. Nevermind that the biggest voices screaming about lies are the same folks that create plenty of lies on their own, mainly the mass market media. If some folks would just come out and claim that Bin Laden is dead and then make us prove it isn’t so, it will at least flush him out and make them play by our rules. If he is dead and they, the al Quedas of the world, can’t produce evidence then we get on with the whole getting Zawahiri thing.
Third, there may be some validity to the whole three warnings thing, Dadullah, Zawahiri, Bin Laden but big deal. Is there anybody on the other end listening?
This weekend we have heard tons of stories about claims of Al Queda being stronger then ever. What has started to puzzle me is nobody is defining stronger. With all of the reports coming out of Afghanistan were the Taliban is getting their ass handed to them what do they mean by stronger? Are the stronger in manpower, organizational ability, equipment? Just what makes them stronger? Other then gullible press folks that is.
So to recap, I think Bin Laden is dead and has been for awhile, the Islamic nutjobs are still pulling the western worlds’ chain, and al Queda is legend only their own mind.
Now then if you will excuse there are some POS that is coming back out from under his rock that needs to be dealt with namely Jeff Englehart. He is another one of those IVAW pukes who is once again getting his ten minutes of fame renewed. Guys like him are far more dangerous since the media takes his stories, give him absolute moral authority since he is a veteran, and never tell you about his less then stellar past. Just a sample of his past fairy tale telling from 2005.

Terrorism is meant to creat terror. That is what they live for and want. By all means, be alert and aware of your surroundings. If you live your life in fear on these bast**ds, then they win! I believe they are desperate.

60 die in weekend Pakistan attacks
Pakistani army trucks carrying thousands of additional troops have rumbled into remote areas in recent days after Gen Musharraf vowed to crush extremists and “root them out from every corner of the country”.

With the surfacing of this “new” Osama bin Hidin’ tape, there is now even more reason to doubt that he is still alive. Apparently, the tape is genuine but appears to be 4 -5 years old. Question: if he is still alive, why would the terrorist organization release a tape of him that is that old? He doesn’t mention any of the recent attacks (or attempts, but, of course he wouldn’t admit failure on al Qaida’s part) and if it turns out to be true that he is dead, does that mean that Al Zawahiri is now the new head honcho?

Another point. Doesn’t it seem eerie that several muslim doctors have recently been involved with al Qaida activities? It kinda destroys the idea that those involved in Radical Islamic Jihad are only the “disenfranchised,” “uneducated,” “poor,” “evil-minded,” and “desperate.” However, it seems that the leadership members never strap bombs on themselves or drive car bombs into throngs of people. They preach martyrdom for the minions (mostly young males) who have been DUPED:

Disenfranchised
Uneducated
Poor
Evil-minded
Desperate

into the cause of Radical Islamic Terrorism and Jihad.

But the cowardly “leaders” live on.

Except for those, of course, who have already been killed by our brave military personnel.

And, probably, Osama Bin Dead.

I would hope they look like Donna Shalala, Janet Reno, and Rosie O’Donnel. That will teach them!

CNN Headline News just cycled this through as a new video again, saying an ‘expert’ confirmed its newality.

The feared fundie outcry after the Red Mosque assault has thankfully not materialized

Here’s a conundrum. I thought he was dead in 2002 after Tora Bora, but when the audio tapes started coming out afterward and our government started insinuating that he was still alive (I know, I know, but I was young and naive) I started to rethink my position (maybe not dead but severely incapacitated).

Then the story went away.

Fast forward to today. After reconsidering the facts (OBL effectively dropped off the map, all confirmably new material from Zarqawi (rot his soul) and Zawahiri, the fact that NO leader in the Arab world survives for long without thumping his chest but no “new” Bin Laden stuff…) and now this…

I think I was right the first time around. The Old Man of the Mountain has been dead for years and no one is willing to stick their necks out and say it. Huh, maybe my first instincts can be decent from time to time.

LakeRuins on July 15, 2007 at 9:30 AM

What they mean by stronger is: not only is UBL and all his butt buds alive but they can each bench press 500 lbs thanks to the new tribal-owned and operated chain of Gold’s Gyms (courtesy of the gazillions of dollars in U.S. aid to Pakistan). Memberships are up 300% since they began giving away copies of the “Sports Illustrated 72 Virgins” calendar.

Honestly AQ would have to be pretty stupid to attack the US before the November 2008 elections. That would completely derail the DEMs plans for surrender as soon as they get in office.

It worked in Spain, and no doubt Harry and Nancy would make a beeline for the nearest mike within minutes of an attack, to tell voters how this “tragedy” wouldn’t have happened if we had left Iraq.

Everything, even death and destruction, is just a political opportunity to these people.
