Will the most ethical Congress evah censure Murtha for his Haditha comments?

Hope springs eternal for MM, but not for me. Last May he insisted that “they killed innocent civilians in cold blood”; fast forward 14 months and the charges against Lance Cpl. Justin Sharratt are hanging by a fraying thread. So why not censure him for jumping the gun? Because that’s not the way things work for Nancy’s fair-haired boy, whose freedom to behave unethically is so total that he was spotted laughing during a House vote to have him reprimanded for threatening a Republican who asked him to stop stuffing his fat face with earmark pork. So, no, there’s not going to be any censure, just like there’s likely not going to be any civil suit judgments thanks to the Speech or Debate Clause. But by all means, try. Force the Democrats to vote against a censure measure and tacitly endorse his smear job. Force him to defend the lawsuit and hide behind his constitutional congressional privilege. It’ll make for a nice counterpoint to the effusive rhetoric on the Senate floor about how Democrats so love the troops that they’re urgently compelled to surrender right away.

You know it’s a shame when something like this is so swamped in other Congressional travesties that it gets forgotten.
Thanks for the reminder.

Yea Allahpundit, I agree. Repubs should go for it. His constituents would probably re-elect him, look how long he’s been up there. Maybe this would give them some incentive to replace him.
2theright on July 13, 2007 at 9:36 AM
No, Murtha will never be censured. He is simply to valuable as an angry Vietnam Marine vet for the extreme leftist Dems to be used as a weapon against Bush and against victory against Islamo-Nazis.
Notice that he was able to call those other Marines guilty of murder without those Marines going through due process, but it is OK to give due process to the enemas of our nation.
This is why we face defeat in this war at home and abroad.
The False Dervish on July 13, 2007 at 9:37 AM
And what makes me the maddest is the fact that he’s an ex-marine. He should be as much ashamed of his conduct as we are disgusted by it. How people like this get elected to congress is beyond me. It’s a sad statement about many people in this country.
Kowboy on July 13, 2007 at 9:40 AM
The portal bringing us inside the beltway seems to go through a looking glass: those who are corrupt demand that others live ethically. Pelosi, Murtha, Jefferson, Boxer…they don’t live by the standards they apply to ‘others’ (anyone who disagrees with them) but instead they act as if they are honest, in full control of the moral high ground. Sad.
Here it is July and I haven’t said it yet:
Term limits, Term Limits, TERM LIMITS!
Doug on July 13, 2007 at 9:42 AM
I don’t believe the Speech or Debate Clause would protect him from anything said outside the floor of Congress, such as during an interview.
Surely he got around to slandering these men in interviews, etc.
benjamin on July 13, 2007 at 9:42 AM
There are no words to describe Murtha accurately, no matter how much foul language one might to choose to use. If Republicans cannot mount a serious challenge to him in his district, then they will deserve some of the blame if he continues in Congress.
doufree on July 13, 2007 at 9:42 AM

It’s the Clinton strategy. So many ethical deviations that no one of them can make a dent.
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on July 13, 2007 at 9:50 AM
What’s worse, this whole slew of BS that Murtha has done or what Vitter did 5 years ago? To me, Murtha is orders of magnitude more harmful to our country.
WisCon on July 13, 2007 at 9:52 AM
If Murtha responds at all, it will only be a variation of “It’s Bush’s fault”. And Nan will never let anything serious about Murtha get onto the House floor.
eeyore on July 13, 2007 at 9:56 AM
Unfortunately, actions by people like Murtha go completely unnoticed by the average American, and completely ignored by the average Democrat.
Grafted on July 13, 2007 at 10:03 AM
Not only that, but Murtha’s current actions are harmful to our country.
James on July 13, 2007 at 10:07 AM
Murtha should have been expelled from the House when he first made those statements last year, when the Republicans were still in charge. Everyone knew that the charges had not been substantiated, and no one knew if they would be or not. Why didn’t at least one House member stand up and challenge him?
Unfortunately, the Democrats are in charge, and as we all know, they are far above the concerns of ethics, honesty and honor that we mere mortals are so foolish as to concern ourselves with. Nothing will ever happen to Murtha, and he knows it.
Lancer on July 13, 2007 at 10:18 AM
The repub’s just don’t get it and I don’t like the chances of this crop ever getting it. What kills me is I really believe this country is crying for them to stiffen up and espouse across the board conservative values. What on earth could make any of them afraid to call a bum like Murtha what he is? They have wandered so far off the map I fear it’s hopeless…
JWS on July 13, 2007 at 10:19 AM
Well said, AP.
You are spot on- Make them put it on record!
gatewaypundit on July 13, 2007 at 10:25 AM
Oh please, the Dems gave congressman Jerry Studds a standing ovation when he was caught having a homosexual affair with a 17 year old page. Murtha is never ever going to be censured.
doriangrey on July 13, 2007 at 10:28 AM
The only real solution is for the Republicans to retake the house then do everything necessary to destroy that slug, Murtha, Difficult . . . but not out of the question.
rplat on July 13, 2007 at 10:34 AM
As I recall
MumraMurtha made these statements on national TV during an interview and not in the Capitol building or while performing his duties in the house. So he should be liable for slander. And in my opinion TREASON since he is, after all, a member of congress and his statements harmed the United states, these men, and gave lots of comfort and encouragement to the enemy.
CrazyFool on July 13, 2007 at 10:38 AM
Last year Murtha came to my VFW to campaign for that idiot Colleen Rowley. After the ranting by them had ended , he came by to shake hands. When he came to me, he said ” Semper Fi, I see you’re a Marine like me.” I did not shkae his hand and I said, ” No sir, I am not like you, I honor my service and am still a Marine. You stopped being one even before ABSCAM!” Needless to say, his face got red and he stormed off. Even though he may not receive censure from his peers, the Conservatives MUST demand it and get it on the record!
MNDavenotPC on July 13, 2007 at 10:40 AM

Wade on July 13, 2007 at 10:46 AM
Magnificent job, Allah. Your point is the whole point. It doesn’t matter if they block censure or the lawsuit. They will be forced to publically defend the indefencible. And with the lawsuit, there will be full disclosure. Let them swing in the wind in front of the American people.
tomk59 on July 13, 2007 at 10:51 AM
We want him in the mix. No censure, we want him on the dias with Hillary, we want him front and center. He is a showcase for liberals gone wild.
If we could just get him to wear a tinfoil hat.

MNDavenotPC on July 13, 2007 at 11:06 AM
My opinion is simnply to file a lawsuit. if the marines wait for congress to act they will never get justice.. Make him defend or apologize for his reckless comments.

I’m not sure who is the biggest traitor, Murtha or Kerry. Both have never done anything, but work against our miltary. I was in the Vietnam Veterans Against the War and met Kerry. I was against the war because the politicians in this country had lost the will to win and were sacrifing our troops. I was never against my country. Most of the VAW weren’t even veterans from Nam and were there to tear down our country. Kerry’s whole war record was a sham.

He should be thrown out.
Or redeployed to Okinawa.

PattyAnn on July 13, 2007 at 1:38 PM
Censures are meaningless. What Americans need to do is work very hard to find, fund, and support a candidate to run against Murtha in 2008. I personally liked the Republican that ran in 2006 but any candidate will do so long as they are able to start early and bring up Mr. “Unidicted Co-conspirator” Murtha’s treason. Murtha is an ex-Marine who is more than just annoying. He doesn’t need to be censured, he needs to be fired and the time to start the termination process is now.
highhopes on July 13, 2007 at 2:00 PM
Since my last entry I have read what others have said about the term ex Marine. I cannot tell you how heartened I am by your proper usage where Murtha is concerned. Yes, we Marines will use the term ex- normally it means one who earned a dishonorable discharge…. but for Murtha this discription is overdue… Thanks , folks!
MNDavenotPC on July 13, 2007 at 2:07 PM
The dhimms campaigned on this…? That’s almost funny, what makes it not is the fact that their constituents have no problem ignoring lies like this and would vote again and again for these sorry losers. Amazing.
I am so glad you stood up to this sorry excuse of an American!

Thank you MNDavenotPC! For your service, of course! And for still being so strong. It is perhaps easier to fight an enemy on the battlefield than to confront an ‘official’ tool like Murtha. You had cojones for many of us put together. You make us a bit prouder and hopeful. With respect and gratitude,

One serviceman, be he/she a Marine, sailor, airman, merchant marine, coastie or soldier is only as strong as people supporting them are. I did what I thought I should do because I felt at the time I had so many who felt as I did. here WERE more Murtha people there that I had expected. Perhaps we should remember when discussing troop pullouts, Are we really saving and supporting them by advocating pullout?… I wonder

MNDavenotPC; Semper Fi brother, I agree. What’s worst about Murtha and his routine is that having been in the Corps, he should know better- it just makes his sins that much worse.
As a former Marine infantryman who went on to force recon and latter special ops, I saw action several times over the years begining with Beirut in ‘83, and I can’t recall this kind of venom in so many forms being directed at us as these men and women today have to deal with coming from their own (so-called) political leadership.
I kept in touch with the guys I served with who decided to go for 30 years or more, most who have served in this war from the opening invasion to Fallujah. I have also met and kept in touch with many of the Corp’s new breed in the last few years, and I can tell you that these kind of things cause them much dismay , anger- and hurt.
As one who loves his country more than my own life, I never thought I’d see the day when such a state of affairs was so commonplace.

Murtha is just one of those people that I get this disgusted feeling that I can’t even describe when I see him coming on TV. There’s a few that do it. And the list gets longer every day, unfortunately. How I wish he took the money in the case. Deal or No Deal before it’s time.

Keep talking man! You’re getting better every time!
My Army Infantry son (19 years old) is home for a few days before he deploys to Iraq mid September. We were up until 3:30 last night discussing his feelings about his duty as a soldier and a man. He was telling me how “exercised” he gets when he listens to kids his age complain about the war, yet brag that they had to work a 9 hour shift at Micky Dee’s. He gets right in the middle of their a$$es and gives them some insight into the life of a war fighter.
He knows that he is absolutely going to have to kill people and he is ready to do his duty. He is just a little concerned with the looseness of the ROE’s and the potential for innocents to be killed. He doesn’t know if he is going to come back screwed up. I wont go into the specifics, but he is going to be ok with performing his duty and get back home and function as a member of society. Needless to say, these are issues the leather arm chair generals will never even consider their entire lives. Yet here is my boy, 19 years old, having to deal with some hard, hard realities that are part of keeping us all safe in our beds at night. I quoted George Orwell to him.
“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”
The worthlessness and humility I feel cannot be described with words and I’ll be damned if I will ever denigrate the sacrifice of any Soldier, Sailor, Marine, Coastguardman, Airman, or any other patriot of this country who faces up to those challenges.
So, I agree, sleep well, because they are keeping them safe and the rest of us will always support and appreciate those rough men.
