Hot Air housekeeping

Hot Air has been online for about 16 months now. We’ve produced about 300 original shows in that time, and we’ve posted hundreds of video and audio clips from hundreds of different sources. Because we have posted so much content, we’re running out of hard drive space on our service account. It’s expensive to keep the old content online in our accounts, so we’re doing various things to minimize the use and expense of hosting it all. One of the things we plan to do is to remove the iPod versions of our older shows. We’ll do that starting about a week from today, and we’ll delete the iPod versions of all shows that were produced in 2006.
I’m letting you all know now, so you can go download those files while they’re still online if you want them. You don’t need an iPod to play them. They will play on any computer that has iTunes or Quicktime player installed. So go get ‘em while you can if you want them, because they won’t be around forever.
I also wanted to take a minute to gauge interest in Hot Air DVDs. We have quite a library of shows now on a wide range of topics. Would you be interested in purchasing DVDs of some of our greatest hits? In addition to Vents, Jihad Watches, Stak Attacks and the rest, what would you like to see on Hot Air DVDs? Prurient suggestions will get you banned, btw.
Finally, a program note. I’ll be on vacation next week but we’ll still have a Blogging the Qur’an on Sunday and we’ll have a Stak Attack next week. Erick interviews Dr. Tawfik Hamid, an Egyptian who came from a liberal, affluent family, joined the jihad in medical school, met Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, and later left the jihad. Dr. Hamid takes a sledgehammer to a lot of the myths that have developed over who becomes a jihadi and why. Erick’s interview with him is a must-see. Part I will air on Tuesday.

Might have an interest in an eclectic collection of ‘bests’ as opposed to all one subject per DVD.
But, I don’t know if I’d really buy very many at all.

16 months of insight, information, and a touch of insanity (ala HR)…..hardly seems like 16 months.
Vacation Bryan. The next 7 months are going to be hectic so you are going to need it. By Super Tuesday we will all need another vacation.

I’d be interested in a DVD, without a doubt. I’d make a compilation and put it on Amazon, stat.
Also, just my .02 here, but I would put the current show back on top as a marquee again, say a permanent fixture on top of the headlines. When the current show is mixed in with the top picks sections, I think it’s more easily overlooked (especially when at work and can only pop in and out of Hotair). Can think of many instances where I noticed a new Vent or JihadWatch long after it was posted. Liked it better when it was on top, as a marquee, and very noticeable…

DVD suggestions:
1) Broadcast-quality versions of every video HotAir produced
2) HD-quality (720p at least) versions encoded in Windows Media Video or Quicktime that would be playable on 99.9% of all computers/portable media devices
3) HotAir photo galleries (high-res pics, behind the scenes, Allahpundit’s Photoshop archive, etc.)
4) Blooper reel
5) “How To” documentary — “How to Make Your Own Political Video Site”
6) “Behind the Site” documentary — The past 18 months in review featuring candid insights on how HotAir.com was created, who has been featured on the site, why it’s become a nexus for political discourse on the Web
That’s just off the top of my head. Around Christmas time, I’ll pay $15 for that DVD easily.

I hate to admit it, but given the lack of explanation as to why there hasn’t been any ‘more Bethany,’ there’s a possibility that our (yes, I include myself) fanboyism may have caused her to go recluse on us.
Or else…one of us (no, I’m not including myself) kidnapped her and is keeping her in a pit in their basement.

I assume that you will be backing up everything you’re pulling off of the servers onto multiple DVDs, just in case you want it again later. Actually I assume you back up everything – well all content anyway. Comments getting lost may be sad but content is a tragedy!

Hey I totaly vote for DVDs. I suggest doing a greatest hits first (to gauge real buying interest)and then start releasing topical disks. Wouldn’t it be cool to include highlights of her Factor visits too. I’d love to see some good Ventage on my TV for those days that MM lets that O’Reilly guy host the factor show when shes not around ;) hehe
Speaking of DVDs (off topic) Id love to see Dennis Miller work out a deal with the Factor gang to release a disk on all the Miller Time spots. That would rock too.
I could even buy some MKH. Mmmmm Ham

I’d possibly be interested in a HA DVD. Especially if it had a chapter devoted to “bloopers and outtakes”.

As to Bethany, we’ve answered this question half a dozen times now. Here’s the official answer from realVerse.
Basically, Bethany has moved on from vlogging. RealVerse has yet to relaunch.

I think making a library of past content and offering it on DVD is a great idea. The historical content in full is probably priceless.
What I would probably pay for is a DVD of Michelle’s Vents, with a few of Bryan’s cameos.
A DVD of guest vents would be great also. Especially the Jihad Watch vents with Robert Spencer.

Hey Bryan, have you ever considered a stripped down “mobile” version of the site for PDA/palm/Windows Mobile users? I have to admit I’m addicted to HotAir, and it would be cool to be able to read posts (actually could handle video too) from my hand-held.

I’d buy a copy of such a DVD. I’d really look forward to some additional behind-the-scenes and blooper content. And I second the suggestion to include some HamNation episodes — at least the ones you’ve linked to on the blog. If my memory is correct, you helped MKH get launched into v-blogging.
Oh, and here’s a feature suggestion for the next website upgrade: can you add a spam filter so I can automatically block posts devoted to the adoration of Bethany or Kirsten Powers?

Greatest hits DVD might be something I’d buy with maybe some outtakes.
Thanks to the entire team for all of their hard work the past 16 months. HA is usually my first and last stop of the day.

I would purchase select Vents as well as Jihad Watch, possibly topics that are in regards to specific issues such as illegal immigration statistics, etc.
I would definitely buy a couple DVD’s of Bethany, especially any that are more about her, and less about stuff…….”it puts the lotion in the basket” LOL!!! “Keep your poodle out of the basement” ROFL!!!

Maybe I’m just throwin’ down the Obvious Card but HotAir Networks, LLC will sell 10,000 copies of the DVD if you include code on the disc that adds WordPress comment preview and spellchecker buttons whenever the DVD is inserted into the computer.

I second all these motions, especially a Vent greatest hits, and an outtakes disc. Releasing discs say, once or twice a month would be good for one’s budget.
Vent helped get me through a long summer last year, and I want to congratulate Michelle, Bryan, and everyone involved for a great 18 months. Btw, I love the Vent theme music and the background music!

I predict in future years you’ll want to reuse some of those Vents, so save a back up.
I wouldn’t be interested in DVDs unless they had something extra, say out-takes?
And, Allah said the new Vents were always going to be right under the headlines, but actually, they move down the page. I prefer them easier to find, either way

A DVD purchase for me would depend on the extras you guys include. Behind the scenes stuff, bloopers, cut segments – things I haven’t seen before. Because I’ve already seen the actual shows once, and now they’re all kind of dated, since they usually address whatever was going on at the time they aired. It’d be like releasing a DVD of Geraldo at Large.

While you are doing that housekeeping, could you please fix the RSS feed for the Vent so that only Vent shows are listed in it? Right now, the Vent RSS feed is the same as the main HotAir RSS feed.
