How much is American pride worth, baby? According to best estimates, about 16,500 calories. Sample quote: “For Kobayashi to come out here and eat like this is a singular instance of valor.”
Stick with it at least until the Japanese guy vomits into his hands. Not the live shot — the slow-motion replay.

I saw this live yesterday.
The sheer volume of food inside them after the time expires is unreal.

Thanks for the warning on the Japanese guy - Can.Not.Watch.

Anyone else wondering why Rosie O’Donnell isn’t prominent in this event?
BillLalor on July 5, 2007 at 2:36 PM
how do they keep their stomachs from bursting lol.
Keli on July 5, 2007 at 2:37 PM
I was very disappointed that Arturo Rios, Jr, the world record holder for eating pigs feat, finished second to last with 21 dogs.
Still it was a great day for America! USA! USA! USA!
Shtetl G on July 5, 2007 at 2:39 PM
I bet Rosie can wolf down a whole cow in 12 minutes. She is huge…lol.

When I was a kid living on an Army base in Germany I went to Organization Day festivities (that’s the anniversary of the unit’s founding) for the VII Corps at Kelley Barracks near Stuttgart. One of the events was a beer-drinking contest for soldiers in the unit. They had to drink beer out of steel Army helmets (not the plastic liners). I remember one guy working on his third or fourth helmet, puking into the helmet …. and then drinking it!! I had to leave at that point.
rivlax on July 5, 2007 at 2:47 PM
How about a Rosie vs. school of piranha match?
Blake on July 5, 2007 at 2:48 PM
No, Rosie wouldn’t do well in a timed event. She is obviously a grazer.

“…the greatest moment in the history of American sports!” Sports? A reversal??
JWS on July 5, 2007 at 2:53 PM
Not many things gross me out, but someone eating their own vomit did. What is wrong with these people?
nottakingsides on July 5, 2007 at 2:54 PM
“The greatest moment in U.S. sports history” - HUH? This passes the Immaculate Reception, the US Hockey team victory over the USSR, etc.?
common sensineer on July 5, 2007 at 2:55 PM
“Absolute dog fight”. Heh.
BadgerHawk on July 5, 2007 at 2:58 PM
Nothing says “America” quite like this video.
This site has sunk . . . . .
Labamigo on July 5, 2007 at 3:04 PM

This will finally put San Jose on the Map!
WE ARE NUMBER ONE!!!
JayHaw Phrenzie on July 5, 2007 at 3:04 PM
I’m just glad the trophy is back in the good ‘ole US of A.
If we’re going to be the fattest country, we’d better have the hot dog eating contest awards to back that up.

Aw c’mon, can’t you picture Herb Brooks standing behind them yelling “play your game!”…
JWS on July 5, 2007 at 3:06 PM
Because of the ‘belt of fat’ phenomenon. A fat person can’t eat as much in one sitting because the fat surrounding their stomach keeps it from expanding as much as a skinny person’s stomach can.
But having said that, I bet she’d do OK in an eating contest where you had to hang upside down to eat through puncture holes in the prey’s neck.
James on July 5, 2007 at 3:10 PM
For once, I have to give ESPN credit, they handled it beautifully by playing it straight and using epic hyperbole. I especially love this event because I know it makes Mike Bloomberg-types furious.
Jim-Rose on July 5, 2007 at 3:10 PM
Please pass the ketchup, and one of those red white and blue napkins.
bigskinny on July 5, 2007 at 3:10 PM
To work off all those calories (SportsCenter said it was around 12,250) you’d need to ride your bike for at least 12 hours straight.
Nonfactor on July 5, 2007 at 3:11 PM
First of all, ya gotta feel bad for those Nathan’s girls in the shorts and tank tops. We all know girls like them, and they thought this gig would help them in the door in the entertainment industry, when in reality they just go home feeling dirty and pathetic. Ladies, you’d have had a better shot if you’d done some low end porn. I just don’t understand how girls get roped in to stuff like this.
Anyway, a “reversal” by Kobayashi? That was hilarious.
And you’ve got to love Chestnut’s reply about when he’d next eat a hot dog. He says he could eat one now if he had to. First of all, it’s a sad situation were someone can come up wtih a reason to require another person to eat a hot dog… and that a guy who just at 66 could do it.
Now I may sound like some sort of bleeding heart lib here for a second… but am I the only one who finds it strange that we hold contests to see guys eat a disgusting amount of food while there are starving people out there? I mean, you could guilt trip anyone any time for enjoying anything while people suffer, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m specifically talking about something life sustaining… food. While some don’t have access, we have enough to make contests for freaks to eat more than 50 people should.
By the way, out of curiosity… what happens to these guys stomachs’ when they go home after these things?
RightWinged on July 5, 2007 at 3:16 PM
I have to wonder…what does seeing people puking up your product do to Nathan’s hot dogs?
Is that the kind of product placement a company looks for?
JetBoy on July 5, 2007 at 3:16 PM
I think they have industrial size plungers for the bombs they are dropping later that evening.
lorien1973 on July 5, 2007 at 3:20 PM
Here’s a thought…did this contest violate the Trans-Fat Ban?
James on July 5, 2007 at 3:22 PM
I am still trying to find out exactly when and why extreme eating competitions and poker games became nationally televised spectator sports.
pilamaye on July 5, 2007 at 3:22 PM
the writers strike a few years ago? reality shows took off, scripted shows died. still feeling the effects. thats my theory at least.
i like watching poker, though. the cash game mondays on gsn is great. negreanu is my favorite. and farha :P
lorien1973 on July 5, 2007 at 3:25 PM
Why don’t you see more hot dog eating contests in Muslim countries?
Beo on July 5, 2007 at 3:31 PM
What else are they going to do? Advertise what they put into them?
taznar on July 5, 2007 at 3:35 PM
OK…even with the warning, I watched. I shouldn’t have. That was bad judgment on my part. I can’t get over seeing Kobayashi still chewing on a hot dog bun soggy with his own vomit. I’m haunted.
Redhead Infidel on July 5, 2007 at 4:01 PM
Yeah, I’ll skip this vid. But why is it Americans are allowed to waste food like this? There are people starving in Africa and India and even in America! But packing away weiners just to shit them out later is really a waste of food. I for one am really upset at this travesty of justice. I say we contact Nathan’s and stop this absymal display of greed and sloth. Who’ll join me in this mission?

Where was Monica Lewinski?
profitsbeard on July 5, 2007 at 4:28 PM
She was cleaning her little blue dress after Kobayashi’s reversal….heh.

I have NEVER been prouder to be an American! What valor!
Dean Barnett on July 5, 2007 at 5:12 PM
It’s funny how this is the only American “sport” where stuffing your mouth with wieners in public doesn’t constitute as an act of indecent exposure or committing a lewd act.
df4jc on July 5, 2007 at 6:45 PM
Aw, WTF? Man…
Jaibones on July 5, 2007 at 7:20 PM
I’m waiting for the miniature corn eating contest.
In Cos Cobb.
profitsbeard on July 5, 2007 at 9:18 PM
Monica Lewinsky WAS there, working for CNN describing the bent shape of each dog as they picked them up.
malkinmania on July 5, 2007 at 10:51 PM
My favorite line was, “this is the greatest moment in the history of American sports.”
Nobody outeats an American. NOBODY!!
