Via Ace. If you haven’t seen the Will Ferrell sketch, this is totally lost on you. If you have, you’ll laugh hard enough to have a seizure. Click the image to watch.

Why does the dude have an M14?

marksman?

Why does the dude have an M14?

see-dubya on July 3, 2007 at 8:10 PM

Because he’s very, very smart.

TBinSTL on July 3, 2007 at 8:16 PM

Looks like he might be a sniper. Hence the padded cheek section on the butt of the weapon.

Why does the dude have an M14? see-dubya on July 3, 2007 at 8:10 PM

‘Cause it mo betteh.

My guess is he’s a sniper with a sense of humor; a kinder, gentler kind of soldier.

Mojave Mark on July 3, 2007 at 8:32 PM

and this just confirms why I simply can not stand Will Ferrell.

Pilgrim on July 3, 2007 at 8:35 PM

I never got that much out of the Will Ferrell original (although Jeff Goldblum deserved an Emmy for Believable Incredulity. He’s pretty sharp.). I wish this soldier godspeed returning home someday, because he has earned an in person meet-and-greet with Will himself for that. I’m sure Will will see this and be very flattered. Of all the things that could be on a soldier’s mind doing hazardous duty like this, what a rabbit to pull out of the hat, er, kevlar helmet.

Captain Scarlet on July 3, 2007 at 8:50 PM

Very funny. As a Chicagoan, I loved Harry…especially when he was with Jimmy Piersall doing White Sox games. A local DJ used to do an impression of a drunk, angry Harry telling off stupid Cubs fans for supporting a team that did nothing but lose. As a White Sox fan, that was hilarious.

Bill C on July 3, 2007 at 8:53 PM

Some of you need to lighten up: anything you can do to Take the Edge Off when people are shooting at you / probably about to start shooting at you is Good.

Janos Hunyadi on July 3, 2007 at 8:54 PM

This was to cause a seizure?

I kind of felt sorry for that mo. He probably thought this crazy American with the gun is about to shoot me as part of his skit. I wonder if they’ve seen Deliverance in that part of the world.

jihadwatcher on July 3, 2007 at 8:55 PM

That poor bastard in the van. He has no idea.

Jim-Rose on July 3, 2007 at 9:02 PM

I love how confused the Iraqi guy was. It was so funny to watch him trying to figure out what was going on and still not getting it at all.

mjk on July 3, 2007 at 9:09 PM

Since i seen the original on Saturday Night Live,
This was pretty good,actually funny.
Come on lighten up,they were at a CHECKPOINT,
a little bit of soldier humour.

I don,t know if he,s sniper material,

but maybe he has expertise with the W-88.

canopfor on July 3, 2007 at 9:18 PM

That poor bastard in the van. He has no idea.

…and that’s probably a good thing. He was asking the guy if he’d eat the moon if it was made of pork!

0.o

SilverStar830 on July 3, 2007 at 9:45 PM

They should submit this to Funny or Die!

Jim Treacher on July 3, 2007 at 9:52 PM

that will ferrel clip feels improvized. Goldblum totally looks like he’s lost.

M-14’s are real popular if you can get a hold of one. Many
are issued to marksman. They will also shoot through a cinderblock unlike an M4/M16.

xplodeit on July 3, 2007 at 10:07 PM

lorien1973 on July 3, 2007 at 10:00 PM

I don’t think it was improv, but Ferrell is just hilarious and Goldblum was having a tough time not laughing his ass off. I believe Ferrell actually did the Harry Caray thing a number of times actually.

Anyway, the clip from Iraq was pretty funny. Glad to see that dude in pretty good spirits. My only concern is that the Iraqi didn’t understand, and perhaps thought he was the butt of some joke. I just hope he wasn’t nervously smiling while he was the only one unarmed and later stewing with jihadist anger. I don’t want to bring this down, because it was funny… But I can put myself in that Iraqis shoes and imagine he felt like he was being mocked.

RightWinged on July 3, 2007 at 10:09 PM

Why does the dude have an M14?

Stopping power. Same thing in Afghanistan - I thought I had fallen into a time warp, but quickly learned why you want one if you can get one.

I once saw a Cub player spoof Harry doing his own name - “Derrick May spelled backwards is Yam”

major john on July 3, 2007 at 10:38 PM

Hilarious! I’m glad to see them finding unique ways of dealing with the stress. Who knows when the next van will blow up in their face? Let them have their fun.

thedecider on July 3, 2007 at 10:49 PM

M14 beats M16.

Kevin M on July 3, 2007 at 11:01 PM

Allah! You didn’t throw Nice Deb the hattip?

Bad Candy on July 3, 2007 at 11:02 PM

Why does the dude have an M14?

see-dubya on July 3, 2007 at 8:10 PM

The M14’s never gone away, but apparently it’s actually been slightly resurgent since Afghanistan, where accuracy and range was often vital. The guy could be a specialized sniper or marksman, and/or it might simply be common to have a guy with an M14 at checkpoints, where taking out an oncoming suicide-driver could prove critical. The further away you can put accurate fire on him, the better.

Essentially, if you’re clearing a building or shooting from building to building, a short, light M4 is pretty good (if a little weak on hitting power). But if you need to take out someone across a field or down the road, the M14 is the better weapon.

Blacklake on July 3, 2007 at 11:30 PM

I’m sorry, I thought that was hysterical. And the guy in the van’s confusion made it even funnier. If I was out there checking for bombs all day, I’d try and find something to do like this too. Gotta stay sane

PowWow on July 3, 2007 at 11:33 PM

Allah! You didn’t throw Nice Deb the hattip?

Bad Candy on July 3, 2007 at 11:02 PM

He hat tipped Ace, because that’s how he heard about it.. but he’s linking directly to Deb, as the only way to see the vid. Better than a hat tip, readers must go to her site to see the video.

RightWinged on July 3, 2007 at 11:33 PM

Oh, I see, sorry Allah!

Bad Candy on July 3, 2007 at 11:35 PM

I hadn’t bothered to click cuz I saw it at Nice Deb’s a while ago.

Bad Candy on July 3, 2007 at 11:36 PM

I’m a huge White Sox Fan. They are the only team in pro sports I can tolerate anymore. I grew up on Harry and Jimmy back in the late 70’s.

The Cubs were defined by Jack Brickhouse, not Harry. The whole Harry/Cubs years were nothing more than an abusive relationship ignored for what is was, and played up for what it wasn’t. The hypocrisy made such an easy target for the likes of SNL and a million other comedians - that it was like shooting fish in a barrel.

When Bartman interfered with Alou, I knew then and there that God exists. Praise His Name.

moc23 on July 3, 2007 at 11:59 PM

Yes! That was great!

Opinionnation on July 4, 2007 at 12:24 AM

I think he’s a designated marksman. Maybe he just wanted a .308. Some of the soldiers in Vietnam wouldn’t give their M14s up.

Why don’t they ALL have M-14s?

My son’s platoon in the 101st just got issued two. They gave em to the two cherries. He was PISSED!

I saw that face on the front page and saw the title of this post and thought initially that Prince Harry had managed to sneak *over there* to be with his boys/subjects in arms.

If Harry does manage to do that and you do found out about it, AP, please don’t tell his secret until when/if he comes home safely to his green and pleasant land.

baldilocks on July 4, 2007 at 1:25 AM

Dang I can’t seem to comment anymore without making some sort of error. Found=find.

baldilocks on July 4, 2007 at 1:27 AM

Why does the dude have an M14?

7.62mm(30.06) vs. 5.56mm

If you’re dealing in any significant distance, or need more raw power, you want the larger caliber, higher grain round. For CQC and mobility, the M4M is fine.

But when you have a strong, secure firing position, go with the GUSTO

Freelancer on July 4, 2007 at 2:59 AM

The Soldier: Not funny. Not professional. If I was his Lt. he’d be standing extra watches and cleaning the latrines.

Will Farrell: Not! Funny! Ever!

cmdrsubfleet on July 4, 2007 at 10:10 AM

The M-14 is a beautiful weapon. It is the only weapon other than the M-1 Garand I’d want to be issued. The .45 should also be re-introduced.

I never saw the Will Ferrel skit and it was lost on me…..

Happy Independence Day!!

Yes Sir, the M-14 was a good one, the only thing it could not take the beating and the mud like the M-1

Wade on July 4, 2007 at 10:51 AM

Hey…. Hey…. you know what?…. Hey….

VolMagic on July 4, 2007 at 6:46 PM

HeOy! What da ya thinka wHa!ffles?

Hmmm, perhaps…. “Super Troopers 2: Infantry”

M-14? well, there’s something to be said for the 7.62 round over the 5.56.

(Namely that it’s more powerful as a penetrator, and you can resupply off your AK weilding enemies.)

Since he’s in an infantry division on the ground with an M-14 (Rather than a Barrett .50, or a mark 12 modified M-16) it’s unlikely that he’s a “Sniper” but he probably is his squad’s marksman.

Now personally, I want to see what Barret’s XM-109 can do when it’s finally perfected…

Jones Zemkophill on July 4, 2007 at 7:51 PM

I think I just found my husband. Marry me, soldier! =P

emmaline1138 on July 4, 2007 at 11:18 PM

I sure loved my .45 It was a Remington Rand and it seemed to shot very well.

gatorbait on July 5, 2007 at 12:00 AM

The .45 should also be re-introduced.

Isn’t the 1911 Colt the best semiautomatic of all time? That’s what they were using in WWII.

Are they still issuing the Baretta or have they moved to the Sig Sauer in 9mm?
