Irony Alert: Elizabeth Edwards on strong opinions

posted at 12:50 pm on July 2, 2007 by Bryan

The New York Times profiles the Silky Pony’s hard-edged liberal half. Buried deep within the love letter is this nugget on her personality:

Mrs. Edwards said that any impression that she was the 800-pound gorilla of a spouse — second this year perhaps only to another candidate’s spouse who once lived in the White House — resulted from the fact that she was a person given to strong opinions, expressed strongly.

“I sit across the table from all these young people, and I see a colleague who wants something done,” she said. “When they express an opinion with vigor I appreciate that. When I express an opinion with vigor — and I do — I sometimes forget that they are looking at me as a spouse, as someone in an elevated position. My words seem more like a mother scolding you. I admit that I am not always conscious of that, and I should be.”

“But I like it when somebody expresses their view with clarity and force,” she said. “It was Nietzsche or Kierkegaard who said you have to believe in something so strongly that you don’t acknowledge another’s point of view: That’s what real belief is.”

“…I like it when somebody expresses their view with clarity and force…”

Really?

That’s not what I hear.

Whatever.

Can we put a dollar amount on each post here about her?
That’s how it ends up.

Silky and his wife need to be treated as attention-seeking children: ignored.

At least someone in that family has some huevos. Someone has to take control of his sinking ship.

“….you don’t acknowledge another’s point of view: That’s what real belief is.”

How marvelously tolerant the liberal left is. So tolerant they don’t want to hear alternate points of view. No wonder they love Chavez and Castro so much.

Is it just me, or are spouses suddenly way too important?

I didn’t think we were electing husband-wife teams.

We Really. Need. Another harpy as First Lady.

I sure wish Pinky was still here with his vomit buckets.

I strongly, stridently, seriously and with great clarity and force dislike Mrs Edwards. I would be much more graphic but I’ll hold my tongue in deference to respect for this site.

http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/brown200410190849.asp

Elizabeth Edwards, wife of vice-presidential candidate John Edwards, saw Mrs. Cheney’s reaction in a different way: “I think that it indicates a certain shame with respect to their daughter’s sexual preferences. . . It makes me really sad that that’s Lynne’s response.”

Lynne Cheney should have punched her in the mouth for that one.

Dash on July 2, 2007 at 1:04 PM

She is full of it. Leave it to a Liberal to Quote Nietzsche.
Stark raving mad that she lost the battle to being with. Perhaps if she had wished to debate AC, well never mind, you can’t expect liberals to do anything other than protest wwords.

warpmine on July 2, 2007 at 1:04 PM

Stormy, I have known ‘White Trash” that show much more class then these two.

bbz123 on July 2, 2007 at 1:07 PM

Follow-up: The irony is, the wannabe leader of the free world, has his wife do the fighting for him.

Headlines: Negotiations are getting so tough, that Pres. Edwards is staying home and sending his wife to talk to them. “They are really getting mean” says Edwards, “and my wife will straighten them out, while raising our kids and fighting cancer”.

right2bright on July 2, 2007 at 1:07 PM

Silky made more money suing people then he does fundraising. Hey Ann how about picking a fight with Ron Paul so he can at least afford bus fare to his next campaign stop.

LakeRuins on July 2, 2007 at 1:08 PM

Apparently her goal is to burn through all that cancer sympathy in record time. Are there any liberals that aren’t utter hypocrites about freedom of speech?

She and John certainly deserve each other, but that isn’t a compliment.

White trash means trash. I am not using the definition liberals use to mean Republicans.

It’s times like these that I sometimes wish I wasn’t so deucedly handsome and a wickedly good blogger, but a good cartoonist. This power-hungry couple should be good fodder for an acid pen and ink man….

Toby Keith called his last album, “White Trash with Money” after a parent of another kid at his daughters school called the Keith family that term.

I take a certain half-hearted exception to Mr. and Mrs. Silky being tossed into the same bin as Toby Keith. ;)

It’s real easy to believe in something strongly … when you don’t acknowledge other points of view. It’s the definition of liberalism.

“That’s what real belief is.”

Not exactly. It’s called self brainwashing. It also insures complete ignorance.

I believe this should be the quote of the year. She just did the best job in history of summing up the liberal mental disorder.

Ok, Toby Keith is just owning the term.

The Edwards are just plain low-down, no-good bastard people.

No wonder Ann used the F word to describe silky, she cut’em off a long time ago.

Ms Coulter is easy to underestimate and Conservatives even demonize her instead of thinking anywhere past the tip of their noses.

Ann knows full well that when money is donated to silky’s campaign that’s money not going to HillBill or Obamanation.

Which this might be slightly off topic but:

If the final tickets are.

HillBill versus Rudy= HillBill Pres.

HillBill versus Fred!= Fred! Pres.

Rudy Versus Obama= Rudy Pres.

Obama versus Fred!= Obama Pres.

HillBill has experience but she’s hated by everybody but Rudy has lost to her before (and she’s a closet communist).

Fred! versus HillBill Fred! wins because he has no history against her and she’s hated by everybody and both are white.

Rudy Versus Obama Rudy is a great leader and Obama has no substance other than smooth talk.

The conundrum being that Fred! versus Obama ends up being a north versus south campaign, Fred! might lose on those terms to the uber lib Obama.

I’ve a dear friend who truly does think that he knows more about what it good for you than you do, and that people like him’s opinions are more valuable than the opinions of people like you and me. And as such, people like him SHOULD be making decisions for the rest of us. He doesn’t see the hypocrisy of this view, which is completely amazing to me.

Your opinions might stink like Friday’s fish dinner in the sink, but you’ve the right to ‘em.

As long as you don’t try to make me live by them, of course.

Edwards wife said that real belief is believing so strongly that you won’t acknowledge another persons view. Spoken like a real fanatic that only sees the world one way….their way. That’s like a lie to a liberal. It doesn’t matter if the facts are true or false, but only if YOU believe it. Their campaign in the toilet anf a hand is on the lever.

“The principle feature of American liberalism is sanctimoniousness. By loudly denouncing all bad things-war and hunger and date rape-liberals testify to their own terrific goodness. More important, they promote themselves to membership in a self-selecting elite of those who care deeply about such things. It’s a kind of natural aristocracy, and the wonderful thing about this aristocracy is that you don’t have to be brave, smart, strong or even lucky to join it, you just have to be liberal.”

P. J. O’Rourke Give War a Chance, Introduction (1992).

Ann Coulter — right again!

Elizabeth Edwards thinks its okay to:

1. Express an opinion with vigor
2. Seem like a mother scolding you
3. Express a view with clarity and force
4. Believe in something so strongly that you don’t acknowledge another’s point of view

..ONLY as long as SHE is the only one doing it!

LakeRuins on July 2, 2007 at 2:14 PM

Silky Ponies’ stronger half must have remembered Wayne Campbell of Wayne’s World quoting the same two, (Neitzsche or Kiekegaard), (in Cantonese). Perhaps it just stuck in her N/K mindset that says: “you have to believe in something so strongly that you don’t acknowledge another’s point of view”.
I don’t think either one of those writers were the awful, horrible, terrible right winger truth-sayers like Ann, Laura, Michelle, Rush, Sean, or the Voldemort of the MSM: Savage.

you have to believe in something so strongly that you don’t acknowledge another’s point of view: That’s what real belief is.

To join the would-be world rulers who meet in the dark halls of the liberal elite, you must adhere to their philosophical creed AND be able to repeat, without reference to notes or crib sheets, the ultimate wise words that compose their most fundamental super-secret guiding belief:

Do what we say,

Ignore what we do!

For WE are the only ones,

who know what’s best for you!

“It was Nietzsche or Kierkegaard who said you have to believe in something so strongly that you don’t acknowledge another’s point of view: That’s what real belief is.”

It is always irrational to not acknowledge another’s point of view, regardless of the passion of your belief. It is wise, appropriate, and acceptable to DISMISS another’s point of view once you have acknowledged it, if it fails to meet a standard of truth or compliance with your existing worldview. There is a glaring difference between considering, then rejecting an argument, and dismissing it out-of-hand with no consideration.

This is one of the primary differences between thought from the left and from the right, and we must always be aware of it. Trying to debate them on premises they won’t even acknowledge as having potential value shows its fruitlessness. It is best to find a broad way to appeal to the reason of all those people who have not gone this far into the mental sickness of liberalism.

georgej on July 2, 2007 at 2:04 PM

I think of that quote often of late. O’Rourke was on the nose, and so was Ann.

On a very serious note, Mrs. Edwards, the staunchly convicted and non-nuanced one (similar to Messrs Bush 43, Cheney and Rumsfeld, and not at all like Mr. John Kerry), looks increasingly ill.

Just another variation on the liberal’s, “Freedom of speech for me, but not for thee,” philosophy.

I am passionate about not wanting John Edwards to be president of the United States. However, if I expressed this viewpoint, “with clarity and force,” on the JohnEdwards blog, I have no doubt whatsoever that it would be summarily discarded.

Nouveau riche white trash” probably says it best; conveys the gauche cluelessness of a grasping little hustler like Edwards nicely.

And on a related note, down here in Cotton Country we used to have another word for folks like Silky’s oh-so-hard-workin’, poor, put-upon lower class victim of a daddy: down here, we used to call people like him “Boss-man,” or just “Sir” for short.

Just getting a little tired of hearing that empty-suit fraud talk about how rough he had it, when his daddy in truth was a mill manager, and hardly a peon. He wouldn’t even know what a pair of brogans is, much less ever dream of wearing ‘em. Soft clothes for him, and nothing else, ever.
