[...] You may remember Weaver from this depth charge back in March as the guy who allegedly pushed St. John to embrace the maverick within and formally join the Democrats. Presumably he was allowed to fall on his own sword. He and Nelson did the honors last week by announcing the disappointing 2Q fundraising totals and resulting layoffs of 50 aides. I wonder if they knew at the time that the axe had fallen on them too. Probably — with McCain on his way to Iraq, maybe he offered to withhold the announcement for a week knowing that the media would be more interested in what he saw in Baghdad once he got back and that would help bury this news. But if it’s the case that both of them already knew they were out, why did they announce last week that Nelson would be working without pay for the foreseeable future? Why bother with that detail when he’d be out within a week anyway? [...]

Eliminating the welfare state=Jsust try to pass a bill that would have iINCREASED the welfare state by upwards of 12 million
Infanticide=
Foreign policy
Free trade=Is only a elite GOP wish. History has shown that unrestrained free trade with poor countries hurts the USA WORKER and it hurts the poor country. It enriches the elites
School choice
Israel
The environment

No candidate will ever satisfy a voter on 100% of the issues. I think McCain is right on all the main ones.

that's two pretty big negatives in my book

Hollowpoint

What you say is true, but those do not even come close to comparing to conservative issues such as:

Heading to Chicago, John McCain said that "it would be nuts" and "ridiculous" for him to consider dropping out of the race despite closing out the second quarter with lackluster fundraising and trailing in "most polls."

I said he deserves a damned site more respect than he’s been getting on this site. He earned it and it’s his for life. - bdfaith

He earned respect for his war sacrifice. He diminished that respect by trying to erase the MIA-POW controversy while leading the caravan to open Vietnam to favored trade partner

He demolished an illusion that he had respect for the calloused hand part of America with his arrogant stand that Americans will not pick lettuce, not even for $50 an hour -

while all over the USA,

Americans lift cases of canned spaghetti and tuna fish in back breaking regularity at the biggest big chain store for $8.00 an hour, with most new hires part time 32 hours max per week and no benefits. The cashiers wear splints for carpal tunnel and the pallet jacks are dragged by folk working like mules

No, they ain't picking lettuce even for $50 and they aint being invited to work on construction sites for $12 an hour anymore for some strange reason. They work inside Home Depot, not in the parking lot. Does that make them lazy?

I will not miss the guy. He overdosed on that good Senate food

If every undocumented American would donate just one dollar…
This one's priceless: McCain should have thought of this one - even if he doesn't get their votes (assuming that in the GOP primaries, they won't be voting illegally), he could at least get their cash.

Yes he is. He’s not presidential material, and he’s past his sell by date as a politician, but he’s earned respect, even if he’s now squandering it.

Mi amigo, you are so wise. With permission, I'd like to request striking the last part. He's not earning the right to stand for the most powerful seat but he should always be respected for his service to this country, both in the military and as a representative. Also, he helped to defeat one named John Kerry.

All that doesn't diminish the blunders of late, but such are we human beings, imperfect. He's still a good and flawed man. For his service I salute him, and always will.

Yes he is. He’s not presidential material, and he’s past his sell by date as a politician, but he’s earned respect, even if he’s now squandering it.

Yes you can't and shouldn't take that away from McCain. He served his country way above and beyond. I think he was sincere in his attempt at bipartisanship but the Dems are so far left that any compromise is not acceptable to the base.

I think the picture of McCain with "Let 'em in Lindsey" Grahamnesty will not be bringing in the support any time soon. I say the 1st of August is the big withdrawal.

He’s the only one in the race with balls enough to fly combat missions over enemy territory.

Duncan Hunter was jumping out of planes over enemy territory as an Airborne Ranger. No knock on McCain's service, but it's worthy of notice.

jihadwatcher,

John McCain is no hero.

BDFAITH-

I just couldn't let this comment pass without further observation:

He wouldn’t be a good President and he’s not even a very good Senator, but he is still a war hero who deserves this nation’s gratitude and respect. He’s the only one in the race with balls enough to fly combat missions over enemy territory.

I would suggest that McCain's downfall is part of a much larger downfall of those who did good things for this nation but were corrupted by all the power, influence, and easy money. By most accounts, Jack Murtha was a decent supporter of the troops at one point in his life- before ABSCAM and geostrategic delusions of a chubby ex-Marine (intentional use of the term ex) who has been caught threatening other Congressmen if they don't support the worthless pork he had earmarked for his district. John Glenn hero astronaut was one of the five Senators who got caught in the S&L scandal. And, of course, Vietnam's first fighter ace and long-time friend to the military was Randy "Duke" Cunningham.

In short, we can honor John McCain's noble service to the nation in the past but that doesn't excuse his current views and actions. He isn't the only war hero turned corrupted politician. Such an attitude demeans those serving in public office who served honorably in combat and still do in some other capacity.

McCain has ridden the whole POW thing long enough.

Thank you for your service, I'm sorry you suffered in a POW
camp for so many years, but you'd never have gotten this
far without it... and it's all used up RINO boy.

I've got it! A grassroots fundraising pitch!

If every undocumented American would donate just one dollar...

But could they make that pitch from the Straight talk Express?

McCain whines like a b*tch about an "abyssmal" quarterly take.

Breaks my heart.

Myabe he should get a clue.
