Video: Hey, how about an enforcement-only bill now, Chertoff?

A fine question from Chris Wallace. Now that the amnesty bill’s dead, why not have the White House drop a bomb in Harry Reid’s lap by splitting off the $4.4 billion border-enforcement package and submitting it as a new bill? The left is serious about the border, right? They must be — they tell us so all the time, when they’re not telling us how tough they are on terrorism. So how about bundling some employer verification, some fencing, and some new border patrol agents and floating that one down Pennsylvania Avenue? Even if it fails, watching Harry, Teddy, and smilin’ Nancy Pelosi squirm while they try to explain why they must, regrettably, oppose the bill would make for dynamite politics. We have a tiny bit of momentum right now; why not press it?
No thanks, says Chertoff.

I just saw this on FNC earlier.
What a farking bastage.

I rest my case: The government never intended to spend any of that 4.4 billion that they were not going to collect from those illegals.

Homeland Security my ass.
SoulGlo on July 1, 2007 at 7:46 PM
Not depressed, but still a bit angry.
When I saw this earlier today all I do was respond ‘liar’.
But I also emailed Chris and asked him to stop allowing people to make the fallacious point that people opposed to “comprehensive” immigration law are racist.
Just because the majority of people violating a law are of one particular race, does not mean enforcing that law is racist.
Geesh!

So the money appropriated for the border fence and enforcement went where?!?
sonnyspats1 on July 1, 2007 at 7:51 PM
You’re assuming the Bush Whitehouse was actually intending on enforcing the borders. It’s obvious they (and the other RINOS and democrats) were not serious. We need senators DeMint/Sessions/Vitter/Dole to bring forth an amendment that’s enforcement only.
SouthernGent on July 1, 2007 at 7:52 PM

“secure the border …using the tools that we have.”
With no effort to answer the questions and not one iota of
effort to relieve the ongoing concerns of the MAJORITY
VOICE who want the border finally and rightfully secured.
A serious case of “I’m taking my ball and I’m going home. hmph!”
I’m not feeling terribly depressed about Bush securing lame
duck status for himself. Disappointment? Oh yes, I voted

It amazes me that I dont hear anyone calling for the Senate to enforce the current law, that was signed in 1986. We won a victory on the SHAMNESTY legislation, and it seems we are too busy slapping each other on the back to keep the pressure on our elected officials to administer the law
DRLIMO on July 1, 2007 at 7:52 PM
Actually I do feel a little depressed. I didn’t make it to the gun show this weekend.
Oh, you mean about the president?
We really don’t need a lame duck in the White House. The thing is, the president can still lead if he wants to because of the weakness, venality, and pettiness of so-called “leaders” like Land Office Harry and Queen Burkha.
Now that we’ve shown him our power, perhaps it’s time to send, fax, and call him with our support for the other things we do agree with him on. Better to salve his wounds and get him back into the fight than say no mas to such cretins like the surrendercrats and rinos who aren’t looking out for anyone but themselves.
A year and a half is more than enough time for one or maybe two SC justices to disappear from the court. We don’t need a president who has no ability to get anyone past a hostile Senate onto the bench. That’s one good reason to fight for the president now instead of against him.
We tell him not to go wobbly, we need to do the same to ourselves.
ScottG on July 1, 2007 at 7:53 PM
How offensive it is for us to be called racist! I have heard and read more reasoned logical comments by people opposed to this bill than on many other subjects in the past year, and racism isn’t even in the picture.
Mara, Juan and the like were just trying to scare, shame, whatever, people into at least keeping quiet if they wouldn’t support the bill.

TheBigOldDog on July 1, 2007 at 7:56 PM
Our “national conversation” on illegal immigration is at a stalemate. I guess serious border security will have to wait until an AQ cell drives a truck-bomb across from Mexico and levels a convention center or hotel in Houston or Phoenix.
Sad to say. This is a prime example of how our political system has failed, and continues to fail everyday.
Thomas the Wraith on July 1, 2007 at 7:56 PM
Skeletor’s non-answer proves that the Bush administration never intended to enforce border security beyond the occasional small token crackdown. The shamnesty bill was just that – a sham.
Not in the least. You expect to have battles with your opponents. Being betrayed by your own team captain is far worse.

Insomniac on July 1, 2007 at 7:57 PM
US illegal immigration enforcement has been a national embarrassment and international joke for so long (20+ years) that it is portrayed on “normal” domestic television as a simple matter of fact. That the G won’t enforce its own laws has become an OBVIOUS fact to anyone with eyes. What fool would believe that any new laws would be taken any more seriously than the old laws?
A better way? How ’bout taking the laws you wrote seriously? How ’bout going up against the cities and municipalities that are spending taxpayers dollars making things more comfortable and easier for illegals? How ’bout going after financial institutions that are giving loans and other financial assistance to illegals? How ’bout you and yours faithfully executing your Constitutional obligation by protecting our borders and the nations citizens, not its criminals and a one-world paradigm?

Jerkoff/Bush is a liar and a juvenile. “Well we tried to do it, but won’t let us…so let’s see what they can do!”
Exit Answer: Yes I am, and clearly the $4.4 billion was just another bluff against conservatives, using our (Monopoly!) money.
I still say that the perfect metaphor for the GOP Senate during the Bush years is an amnesty bill with lots of support, and paid for with $4.4 billion in new tax money.

Chertoff spent his Sunday dutifully deflecting anger aimed at his boss while not puncturing the bosses policy of Y’all come, now!
Answer, no! But unfortunately even a double amputee duck President has a lot of power and again I predict he will refuse to enforce our immigration laws anymore than he is just forced too and he will, readily go so far as to use executive orders to facilitate, reward and even legitimize, poor, besotted, illegal migrants, who he believes deserve more than we do to live here.
Speakup on July 1, 2007 at 8:13 PM

You know he wanted to say that the border security issue will for sure fix the problem, but they need to hold it up as a bargaining chip to get their amnesty provisions agreed to.

PBoilermaker on July 1, 2007 at 8:17 PM
Chertoff is so lame that I can’t think of anything to say to him other than to attack his honor and integrity, which I’ll keep to myself.
I think that if he gets his way, they will start cracking down on illegal immigration in the most repugnant way they can possibly imagine, making sure there are hundreds of cameras around in an effort to demonstrate to the world how cruel the American people are.
They’ll be blasting tear gas into homes, busting in the doors, pepper spraying entire families including children, yanking babies away from their mothers breast and slamming her down to the ground to administer handcuffs and shackles. There will be videos of shackled and crying children balling their heads off while their parents are loaded into meat-trucks, followed by images of children being dragged kicking and screaming into prison bussed on their way to the most dilapidated and overflowing orphanages they can find.
All to make their sick demented point.

profitsbeard on July 1, 2007 at 8:27 PM
If those are the caliber of “Republicans” breaking ranks to oppose Bush’s Iraq policy, I’m not entirely convinced there’s anything new to worry about. I suppose a Quisling’s a Quisling, and if enough of them with either R’s or D’s next to their names get together in congress they could cause problems. But after Shamnesty, if there’s anybody in the country with less popular support than Bush, it’s pro-amnesty congressional weasels like the above.
Blacklake on July 1, 2007 at 8:27 PM
No. Why should I? He brought this all upon himself.
We conservatives defended him the first million times he screwed up, and we grit our teeth and rationalize it all away under the old “us vs. them” mentality, that even though he was making a mess of things, he was still at least “our guy”.
But Bush has proven that he’s most definitely NOT “our” guy. He tried his best to sell out the entire country, and then turned around and labeled those of us who opposed his efforts – the base who are the ONLY ones who’ve supported him the last couple years – as “racists”. Screw that. Let him enjoy the full-on impotency of lame-duck status. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t screw up so badly in what time he has left that he poisons the well completely and ruins our chances or winning the White House in 08.
Vyce on July 1, 2007 at 8:30 PM

WisCon on July 1, 2007 at 8:56 PM
The funny/sad thing about this whole situation is that if George Bush had just been smart enough to do the right things in the right order at the right time he might very well have been able to have people ready to talk about some sort of normalization process by now. To do that, he would have needed to start showing some interest in border enforcement early in his first term or, barring that, shortly after 9/11. The Republican party controlled both houses of Congress right up till last winter. He could have started by showing some interest in actually implementing the border enforcement provisions that have been on the books since ‘86. After construction on a border fence was well under way and starting to show results the time would have been right to start introducing congressional bills (multiple bills, not one big all-or-nothing bill) to make it possible for some of the people who were already in the country illegally to stay legally. Since he wasn’t smart enough to do things that way he ended up with nothing to show for his efforts except a lot of hard feelings among people whose support he’ll still need in the coming months. Maybe our next President will be smarter.

PBoilermaker, we’ve both noticed the same thing so perhaps Chertoff accidentally tipped his hand and allowed us to see his cards.
I think they’ll either do nothing or will make an extreme propaganda effort in an attempt to force the American people to beg them to stop, hoping we’ll give up and agree to their amnesty.
If they try it, I hope it backfires on them and we get some turnover in our government, starting with the head of Homeland Security.

If I was the Pres. I would assume that this country is under attack. I would declare war on Mexico, suspend Posse Comitatus, put 100,000 active troops on the border Armed with rounds chambered , hammers back and safety off. Have a double wall fence built in 6 months. Require that the Mexican consulate pay by bank transfer for all medical services rendered to Mexican or any other country invaders. Ban all non citizens from all schools.
I would set up a bus service and charge them for a bus ride back. The bastages walked here so the bastages can walk back
Foreigners that want to work here and don’t want to wait for the system they could have a work permit. The company that sponsors them would be responsible for their medical care and criminal liability. They nor any off spring will ever be eligible for citizenship.
That goes for Brits, Germans, Canadians, Mexicans etal.
Then I’d tell the U.N. they have 24 hours to pack there trash and get the hell out of America.. Stragglers will be thrown in the Hudson river.

According to latest polls, his job performance is 10 points higher than Congress’s numbers. And no, I’m not sorry to see him becoming a lame duck. My only concern right now is that he doesn’t have the rug pulled out from under our troops in harm’s way. He burned all his remaining (not much) political capital on this shamnesty that almost none of his base wanted. Why in the world didn’t he exert even half of that on reforming social security? That was one of the main reasons I voted for him… it took b@lls to push for reform (even that modest) but he barely put up a fight on that issue. I am truly disappointed in his performance, but I’m still glad Gore or Kerry didn’t win. As miserable as Bush has been on amnesty, etc., I can’t imagine how bad they would have been.

Hate to say it, but until this guy leaves as the head of DHS, not much is going to change. I wonder if Chris Wallace feels like he’s talking to a brick wall. I’ve written letters to some of these congressmen, and I sure feel like I’ve been writing to a few of them.
