Video: Hey, how about an enforcement-only bill now, Chertoff?

A fine question from Chris Wallace. Now that the amnesty bill’s dead, why not have the White House drop a bomb in Harry Reid’s lap by splitting off the $4.4 billion border-enforcement package and submitting it as a new bill? The left is serious about the border, right? They must be — they tell us so all the time, when they’re not telling us how tough they are on terrorism. So how about bundling some employer verification, some fencing, and some new border patrol agents and floating that one down Pennsylvania Avenue? Even if it fails, watching Harry, Teddy, and smilin’ Nancy Pelosi squirm while they try to explain why they must, regrettably, oppose the bill would make for dynamite politics. We have a tiny bit of momentum right now; why not press it?

No thanks, says Chertoff.

Exit question: Anyone else not feeling terribly depressed while reading this?

The status quo won’t change and there won’t be another serious attempt for another five years when the newly reelected president can safely sign off on anything. I’m sure a Pres Hillary will sign off on a much tougher bill /sarc/ than what was just killed.
Why would Bush do something like this anyway? After all his base has abandoned him.

Individuals and the appropriate government departments at all levels must be sued for not enforcing existing laws.

digitalintrigue on July 2, 2007 at 1:08 AM

Sounds good.

I’m also about ready to sue the White House for defamation of character if they keep calling those of us who demand enforcement ‘racists’ and ‘bigots’.

What a freakin’ snob ! I keep asking but I get no answers, where does GWB get these asshats ? The only good choice he ever made, if he made it, was Dick Cheney !

DoctorDentons on July 2, 2007 at 7:55 AM

We need to recall the entire freakin Government. Oh wait isn’t that call Revolution?

I saw the ButtWayBoys last weekend. Based on what they think and what this idiot has to say I’m thinkin’ that the Republican party has left us behind! And now they are going to package up another liberal (McCain, Romney, Rudy) as a “conservative” and sell them to us as the next “Gipper” and shove them down our throats and tell us that the world will end unless we vote for them and then when we do they will appoint more dufuses like this guy! I’m not buying this time!

Chertoff and his ilk CLAIM that a wall can’t help and that you can’t secure the border.

Why do they say they can’t?

REVENGE for losing the Senate bill for it is NOT that they can’t secure the border…SIMPLY PUT THEY WON”T!

Their attitude is “Screw You”!

Chertoff is as incompetent to Homeland Security as that mousey little woman heading the Department of State is incompetent.

I used congress.org to send emails to voice my displeasure at the amnesty bill. According to this site, Chertoff doesn’t have a public email address. I’d like to encourage everyone to follow my plan B for contacting this A-hole. I went to the post office and for $1.40 I bought 5 blank, prepaid postcards. I googled the phrase “illegal immigration” and brought up the image results to find great pics including the American flag surrounded by a barbed wire fence. I printed the best pics on the postcards and addressed them to Chertoff at the DHS. I’ll drop one in the mail every day or two. If this idiot doesn’t have a email box, let’s flood his snail mail box with postcards.

This ass hat does not seem capable to handle “clean up on aisle 6″ let alone our national security.

Well, Chris first of all, anybody who says we haven’t been enforcing is just willfully blind to the facts. We have done more in terms, and unfortunately it’s been some painful stuff, in terms of arrests, 700 criminal cases against employers, uh raids involving thousands of people, unfortunate pictures of crying children whose mothers are being…

And who is he hoping to impress with those comments? Nationally, it doesn’t even qualify as a drop in a bucket to have 700 employer cases, when there are probably more than 150,000 businesses of various sizes knowingly employing illegals. And the occasional raids are just about scripted to capture media attention as if they were truly “cleaning up”, while most of those taken are released within 3 days. But the capper from this quote is his ridiculous attempt, while Wallace is interrupting, to appeal to our emtions about poor children crying. Yes, when mommy and daddy are taken into custody because they are criminals, it will make children cry. That’s the fault of whom? The authorities? The federal government? Lindsay Graham’s bigots who won’t shut up?

We tried enforcement only, that didn’t pass?

I call BS. It was the pro-amnesty crowd themselves, the White House included, that blocked all bills which were not “comprehensive” in nature, saying that you couldn’t deal with this issue piecemeal, but had to tackle the whole thing together as a monolithic structure.

We’re still gonna work on our part to enforce the border using the tools that we have.

Really? Let’s check with Ramos and Compean about that one.

His “new look” is hilarious. Maybe he wants to join the turtle club.

Guardian on July 2, 2007 at 3:32 PM

he sounded just like your typical liberal does, ask a real question and you get the buts and stalls and no real answers.that 4 billion could really stir the fudge with the dems if they had the nads

Come on Chertoff, enforcement first! Put up or resign!! If you don’t want to do your job, get the hell out, NOW!! Deport Illegal Aliens! When local law enforcement calls ICE agents to pick up Illegal Aliens, get your asses over there and PICK THEM UP AND DEPORT THEM!! Mr. Chertoff, I’m reporting suspicious activity at this Methodist Church in Chicago. There’s a woman there, an absconder, who claims she’s going to bring the American economy to a halt. She must be an Illegal Alien and a terrorist. I think her name is Elvira Arellano. She says you don’t have enough huevos to come in there and deport her. Why does she HATE America so much? And why is she laughing at YOU?
