Video: EU celebrates European film with soft-porn promo; Update: Promo explained!

posted at 1:35 pm on July 1, 2007 by Allahpundit

And it ain’t really that soft, truth be told. No actual nudity here but the “performances” are at least as graphic as what you’ll find after midnight on Cinemax. In fact, it’s pretty close to the line of what I can show on this site, but hey — good enough for our enlightened European betters, good enough for me. For those less “enlightened,” please observe your official content warning.

Money quote: “I suppose this film is appropriate. The EU has been screwing Britain for the past 30 years.” Exit question: How has this garnered only 650 views in the two weeks it’s been up on YouTube?

Update: Ah, this makes a tad more sense — according to a reader, it’s actually a scene from “Amélie” that’s been expropriated for the ad. Hence the connection to European film.

Coming soon: Amnesty supporters borrow “the butter scene” from “Last Tango in Paris” to explain the merits of comprehensive immigration reform.

“Puritanical,” not “puritanian.” And no, not my values, but possibly some of our readers’. I posted it, didn’t I?

Somehow, I don’t think this is what John Lennon had in mind when he wrote that song.

That was not suggestive. This is suggestive. Bukkake brand milk. Of course, only in Japan.

HA!

Gaawd, we’re getting old.

See. Everyone gets laid in Paris. Or is that Paris gets laid by everyone? (At least according to AP’s “headline news” links.)

andycanuck on July 1, 2007 at 2:19 PM

The refrigerator scene in “9 1/2 Weeks” would be more appropriate for immigration, picking the strawberreis that Americans won’t pick.

Where exactly did the myth of America being founded by horribly horribly prudish Puritanicals get started? As I recall, the Puritans were something along the lines of a huge minority compared to the other colonies of VA, Carolinas, etc.

apostle26 on July 1, 2007 at 2:30 PM

Where exactly did the myth of America being founded by horribly horribly prudish Puritanicals get started?

Much of it seems to come from the prudish Victorians, who in looking back to the colonial period, projected their prudishness back onto the Puritans. Similar to how medieval Europeans projected their ideas of chivalry and knighthood back onto the earlier times of King Arthur, before those ideas had even been developed.

Come on, first you cannot understand someone who speaks English, and now you have doubts about posting footage that can be seen on prime time TV in Europe each and every day? You should come over and see what’s being shown on the tube after 11 PM. No pixelation here, I can tell you that much.

That wag was right, everyone screwing each other seems to be the state of affairs in Europe. And stupidly, they’re proud of it?

naliaka on July 1, 2007 at 4:29 PM

Hmm. Bits of it are from Amelie, which was a big hit in the UK, but it seems to have been fleshed out (cough) with other bits that I can’t remember; perhaps I blinked the last time I saw the film.

Apeking on July 1, 2007 at 5:35 PM

Guys, I just signed on, and the screenshot you have up, I knew IMMEDIATELY to be from AMELIE. Filmicly speaking, one of the most perfect films I’ve ever seen. And one of the most delightful films – entertainment-wise – I’ve ever seen.

With that said… that ad is about the tackiest use of scenes from a film favorite of mine.

Please, if you’ve not seen AMELIE, don’t let this stupid ad keep you from seeing it. It’s lovely.

Are you sure you’re not thinking of Rochelle, Rochelle, “A young girl’s strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk,” tickledragon?

andycanuck on July 1, 2007 at 5:58 PM

My first – and lasting – impression when I saw the vid was, “What the fu….?”

Then I realized I’d answered the question when I’d asked it.

European film-making. Whatever. Give me the worst of Hollywood “cultural imperialism” over pointless, pretentious Euro-trash any day.

Spurius Ligustinus on July 1, 2007 at 6:13 PM

Is that the best they can offer the British public? Come together? Ha what a cheap form of appeasement. I guess the real problems are too much for the everyday mind. Sex welfare.

Eerie synchronicity. I was just telling someone about my new girlfriend Rachelle (close enough), and she mentioned that line. Haven’t thought about it in years, now twice within a couple of hours.

It means something; I know it.

kafiiri on July 1, 2007 at 1:39 PM

Maybe some fo us value sex and the human body as something more then a commodity for advertising, maybe human sexuality has a higher meaning more then commercial exploitation?

Is precisely that fact that the human body is beautiful and sacred that it should not be used for half-time entertainment.

I thought I was watching the mating channel. I still to this day, cannot understand the Europeans’ dorky, sappy editing style of throwing in a shot of a pickle in a fuse box in between unrelated footage.
