When Hot Air Attacks: The shamnesty ads

In case you missed one or more of our ads over the past week, I thought I’d put all five of our anti-shamnesty ads together in one post and explain a little bit of each one’s backstory. You know, for the benefit of the WSJ reporter who didn’t bother to email us before insinuating that there were some kind of shadowy moneybags behind us. We’ve had conspiracy-prone leftwing bloggers make the same accusation before, but we ought to be able to expect a bit more from the Wall Street Journal. Or perhaps there isn’t a much of a gulf between the pros and us bloggers as the pros would have you believe.

Anyhow, here’s our first ad. It started out of an email that Michelle sent me at about 10 am Sunday, after she had read Mickey Kaus’ call to unleash YouTube on the shamnesty senators. At the time I was out camping with my family. She wrote the script, and after returning home I voiced it and started in on the production at about 8 pm Sunday night. By 1:30 am I still wasn’t happy with it, so I went to bed with the intention of finishing it Monday morning. It took a bit longer than I’d hoped, but we still had it online a little before 1 pm Monday afternoon.

Our second ad went up at 10:44 Monday night. This one was also Michelle’s idea and script, my production. Ted Kennedy on the vocal.

Ad #3 was my idea. It was Tuesday morning, and I just wanted to get one more shot in arguing that a vote for cloture was a vote for amnesty. This ad has a bit too much of that “Head On: Apply directly to the forehead” feel, but it gets the point across. Start to finish, this ad took about 90 minutes to produce.

Ad #4 was actually inspired by one of Hot Air’s most loyal readers. It was a response to the successful cloture vote on Tuesday, and a shot across the bow of the GOP itself. My script, Cry Havoc’s photoshop at the end, total production time about two hours.

Ad #5, Senator Switchback, is self-explanatory for the most part. After Brownback’s switcheroo, we knew we had to put out an ad. Allah grabbed the two video clips, Michelle wrote the script and I voiced and produced. Total production time: about two hours.

No shadowy benefactors, no 15-man production team, no piles of money. Just three bloggers, good scripts and editing tools, and the truth.

That pesky truth thing again. That’s what the WSJ and the rest of the legacy media don’t quite get. Truth always wins and it doesn’t take alot of money, people, or lobbyists.

Pilgrim on June 30, 2007 at 1:59 PM

I’m so proud of you guys. “sniff”

Guardian on June 30, 2007 at 2:06 PM

“macaca” was just the tip of the tsunami(to put it in Bush-speak.) The next president will be the candidate who best understands how to mobilize the New Media.
From what we’ve seen from this amnesty debacle, the conservative movement gets it, but Republican officials don’t.

Au contraire - you have in that very last item a huge “shadowy benefactor” that the MSM has lost touch with. They haven’t had a good working relationship with the truth in quite a while.

drunyan8315 on June 30, 2007 at 2:07 PM

For those Dems who are still thinking about the “shadowy” support for these vids, it could be helpful to re-view A Day In The Life Of Hot Air where the palatial Hot Air digs are exposed for all to see.

Byran, I’m still waiting for you and Michelle to do a parody on Sonny and Cher…The Mohammad and Alia Jihad Hour…….

doriangrey on June 30, 2007 at 2:08 PM

the Truth is a very fine thing!…it cuts through all the BS…it divides & CONQUERS!!! & speaks plainly to every ear & heart! Truth=true Freedom

A bit? Hahah, still good.

mythicknight on June 30, 2007 at 2:14 PM

All I can say is keep up the excellent work! I e-mailed #4 to several people and it was definitely well loved!

DCJeff on June 30, 2007 at 2:17 PM

I was kinda hoping that Michelle would mention the WSJ’s false accusations on the Factor last night, just to twist the knife a little more. They deserve all the public embarrassment they can get, between the “shadowy money people” accusations and attacking loyal Americans for not being willing to sell out our country. And thanks for all the time and effort that you all put in, both on this fight and every day.

Isn’t “conspiracy-prone leftwing bloggers” redundant?

ReubenJCogburn on June 30, 2007 at 2:21 PM

That last one pwnz Brownback…

Tim Burton on June 30, 2007 at 2:24 PM

Absolutely brilliant job. Let’s keep up the pressure. How about an ad for the recallmel.com movement?

Valiant on June 30, 2007 at 2:31 PM

I don’t believe a word of what Bryan just wrote. Nobody could convice me that Karl Rove is not behind this. NOBODY!

Somewhat OT but related to your analysis. I noticed the Karl Rove and the VP were fairly quiet on this issue. Anybody else get that feeling as well?

DCA on June 30, 2007 at 2:49 PM

Bryan, Michelle, Allah,

In the Grand Scheme of things, those five “low budget ads” had a major impact on the debate in our US Senate and should will rank among the most successful information campaigns ever in the American media!

The call to action was a great success. Y’all can take a well deserved bow for helping to defeat a bill that would have cost us all our country. Yes, literally our country! For a country with no borders is no longer a country. Thank you for your Herculean effort and Well Done!

I picked up on that too. I think they were/are savvy enough to see where this trainwreck was headed and simply got out of the way.
What gets me the most is how profoundly this country’s political class completely misjudged the American public.
You always hear how out of touch they are in the beltway/media bubble, but when it is demonstrated so clearly like this it’s just more than a little disconcerting.

billy on June 30, 2007 at 3:20 PM

What should really start being pushed now is the Tancredo no aid to santuary cities bill.

LtE126 on June 30, 2007 at 3:21 PM

I really love you guys, Michelle, Bryan and Allahpundit!!! If I were young again, I would wish to be one of you when I grew up. We need to stay on stop, alert and ready. I didn’t use the email method because (a) I don’t feel like providing them with a resume (b)they wouldn’t read them, and (c) calling was easier and most of the time I got through at their local offices. It also gave me an opportunity to “get a feel” for the staff. With the exception of Diane Feinstein’s DC office staffer, a man, who was extremely rude and told me I couldn’t possibly know anything about the bill, every other staffer was decent. This is the first time in my personal history where I feel that I was able to do something to affect the governance of my country. I did march in the 60’s but I got a brain a became a traditionalist. By the by, Michelle, you were great covering for O’Reilly. You do, however, need to toughen up more with you deal with bullies like the hispanic professor. Otherwise, you have come a long way baby!!

sharinlite on June 30, 2007 at 3:35 PM

I love you guys!

No, I don’t want your Bud Light. ;-)

Exit question: If you never gave to the RNC, can you still demand a refund?

Fixed it for ya.

Spirit of 1776 on June 30, 2007 at 3:57 PM

lol, I mean great bloggers, but I’m too lazy to fix it:)

Spirit of 1776 on June 30, 2007 at 3:57 PM

I did not renew my WSJ subscription.

I feel good about that. Kudos guys, kudos!

Kini on June 30, 2007 at 4:00 PM

Great job on all of the ads guys. I had shared the Teddy one with a friend who leans left and even she had to admit she liked it.

PowWow on June 30, 2007 at 4:05 PM

And the truth will set you free!

I am pleased with Michelle’s, Bryan’s, and AllahP’s hard work and dilligent efforts, always. One can only wonder at the devastation that could be wrought had you a wealthy benefactor and professional thespians!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the underground lair. We have gathered here before us the world’s deadliest assassins. OK? So, cut me some “frickin’” slack. You forget. We’re in a volcano. We’re surrounded by liquid hot magma. muahahahahaha

SilverStar830 on June 30, 2007 at 4:07 PM

During the last several weeks an intense spotlight was directed on Congress and an attempt to ramrod a bill through that could have expedited the decline of this great country that I and many across this nation dearly love. Focus was directed towards educating the public concerning the details of this pitiful bill and rightly so but what caught my attention was the huge number of inadequate and uneducated politicians on both sides of the aisle. Where are the clear thinkers? Where are our leaders? Where are our patriots? Are these the best our country has to offer? What a sad commentary. I guess this is the result one should expect when less than 50% of the public participate in the process that allowed these dolts to attain power. Somehow, someway real passionate Amercians that are truly concerned about the future of this great nation need to take a stand - get involved - kick the idiots out - run for office - and put the luster back in the letters USA!

Bereans on June 30, 2007 at 4:38 PM

..Bryan…Nice work. Just add a little southern tone to your voice to appease the masses.

Legions on June 30, 2007 at 5:34 PM

THIS LINK SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF HOT AIR THROUGH THE ELECTION SEASON!!

This is apparently what it takes to get their attention. Let’s make sure we KEEP their attention. Stay with what works … keep calling your representative and demand they build the fence, sanction employers who hire illegals, stop catch and release, stop any tax payer services for illegals.

Valiant on June 30, 2007 at 2:31 PM

Heh. That would be awesome. It takes some serious Malkins to go after not only a sitting Senator but the head of the RNC. But he’s part of the GOP’s problem, not part of the solution, and always has been. I can’t wait to see how bad contributions are now if they were down 40% a month ago, especially when you factor in all the people that asked for their money back. Shamnesty Mel deserves to get the boot for doing an abysmal job for the RNC and for Florida.

Somewhat OT but related to your analysis. I noticed the Karl Rove and the VP were fairly quiet on this issue. Anybody else get that feeling as well?

DCA on June 30, 2007 at 2:49 PM

I noticed that too, and figured that they knew this was Bush’s baby and that he wouldn’t take no for an answer, whether or not it was a good idea.

ReubenJCogburn on June 30, 2007 at 6:41 PM

what did i miss? the embedded vids are not on this page, just whitespace…

Remember, remember, come election in November,
the shamnesty debacle and plot.
I have not a muse why the shamnesty ruse
should ever be forgot.

Three bloggers? Luxury! When I did my video I had to get up at three o’clock in the morning, write the lyrics, eat a handful of hot grubble, record 57 takes at the recording studio, set up the tripod, videotape it, edit it, and then my wife would beat me around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if I was lucky!

Do you guys think of any reason why the government needs a distraction now? (if indeed Bush pushed a bill he knew was going to fail)

To get the scrutiny out of Iraq and buy some more time until results arrive?

Or he did it to plant the seed for Immigration to be the main issue for the 2008 campaign?

Bah! maybe our Prez is just dumb

Ropera on June 30, 2007 at 7:59 PM

Bah! maybe our Prez is just dumb

Not dumb by any means.
It is just that his agenda is not the same as what most of us working class American Citizens would want.

LegendHasIt on June 30, 2007 at 8:28 PM

I hope that Prez Fred! brings you guys on to run the WH media operation. That would truly rock the house!

old_dawg on June 30, 2007 at 10:46 PM

I would never have believed my opinion of the U.S. Senate could be brought to its present low. The American Senators have perhaps never seemed to me to be leading lights; however, prior to this incident, it would never have occurred to me that a few dozen of them are just sloppy, ignorant pigs.

Does anyone see a reason the ads should stop? The sixteen-month festival of videographic vengeance begins now, I say–since I’m not doing the work. If it needs a name, we can call it Carnevale, after our favorite WSJ reporter.

Kralizec on July 1, 2007 at 2:02 AM

Lindsey Graham, Mel Martinez, and the rest of the “conservative” turncoats better understand that, come their next run, they will be primaried out to be replaced by true conservatives (and believe me, they are salivating to get in and replace the RINO incumbants). So enjoy the run now guys….cause you’re outta here!

lynnv on July 1, 2007 at 8:29 AM

The only one I missed was number 4. I would say that it was my favorite, but all of them drive a major nail into the Shamnesty coffin.
My gratitude is immense. Without sites like Hotair, talk radio, and all of the champions* who courageously speak for the right side of things, this would have been America’s final hour. That doesn’t mean that we should let down our guard or diminish our activism. At least we know what needs to be done and that it will be a long, hard slog.
*Dear Michelle and her Staff are among that list.

Christine on July 1, 2007 at 1:04 PM

As for the ‘Senators’, history repeats and power corrupts–absolutely.

Christine on July 1, 2007 at 1:07 PM

lynnv on July 1, 2007 at 8:29 AM

I think you are going to be sadly disappointed when they are replaced by Democrats. Incumbents don’t lose often and when they do it usually against someone of the other party.

Are you going to be happy with a 60 - 40 Senate with Dems in majority?
