New Glasgow thread: Did a third suspect die inside the Jeep? Update: Suspect screamed that a bomb was about to go off; Update: Two accomplices arrested in northern England?

posted at 5:44 pm on June 30, 2007 by Allahpundit

The last thread was getting unwieldy so let’s play two. The latest scoop from CNN, clarifying their earlier erroneous report that the burned suspect in the hospital had died, is that in fact it was a third suspect who died — inside the Jeep, which explains why one of the suspects was apparently seen trying to open the back door frantically after the crash. A reader who watched the Scottish police presser e-mails with a good point, though: according to the police spokesman, they haven’t been able to approach the vehicle yet. Unless the CNN scoop is very late-breaking, how can they tell what’s inside? On the other hand, how do Scottish cops know that this is linked to the car bombs in London if they haven’t had a chance to inspect the evidence? (Likely answer: one of the suspects has already confessed.)

So there’s one subplot. The other big one right now is what the “suspect device” was that the burned jihadi who’s now in critical condition was wearing when he got to the hospital, and which necessitated the building being evacuated. Obviously suspicions are that it was a suicide vest, one which he must have tried to detonate when the police approached after the crash. I guess they weren’t any better at building that than they were the car bomb.

Finally, if you haven’t seen the Blotter’s scoop here yet, do so now. And here’s Ace on crack terror analyst Larry Johnson, who’s laughing his moron ass off over the fact that today’s bombing didn’t rise to the level of a mushroom cloud.

Plenty of updates to follow, no doubt.

Update: A bit of corroboration for CNN from Sky: “Some witnesses told Sky News they saw three men in the Jeep, and they were all wearing boiler suits. Police said they do not know if there was anyone else in the vehicle.”

Update: The AP zeroes in on the link between today’s attack and yesterday’s fizzled plot: “A British government security official said the methods used in the airport attack and Friday’s thwarted plots were similar, with all three vehicles carrying large quantities of flammable liquid.” Was the liquid meant to go boom, though, or for another purpose? An eyewitness:

Witness Jackie Kennedy told the BBC that a man got out of the car, went to the back and pulled out a can of fuel, which he poured on himself and ignited.

“The guy was in flames and seemed to be enjoying himself,” Kennedy said.

Another link between the plots from the Telegraph: “Travellers watched in horror as one of the two men was said to have tried to pull gas cylinders from the vehicle’s boot before it exploded.” And from the same article, a quick glimpse at that “suspect device”:

[T]he BBC was last night reporting that a bus driver passing the hospital had witnessed a police officer carrying what appeared to be a suicide bomb belt into the middle of a cricket pitch opposite the hospital.

Local police also suspect a suicide belt.

Update: New details from the Daily Mail. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that these guys weren’t trained Al Qaeda operatives.

Security guards, initially believing the car had been involved in a straightforward accident, grabbed fire extinguishers and tried to put out the flames.

But one of the men, both in their 30s, leapt out and attacked the guard, screaming at him that a bomb was about to go off…

One of the men soaked himself in petrol, set himself alight and ran into the main terminal area, carrying petrol cans.

The flames were extinguished by an airport worker, but even though the would-be terrorist’s clothes were practically burnt off him, he started fighting with police officers and passers-by.

Update: It must be 45 minutes to an hour now since CNN first broke the story about the third suspect and it has yet to appear on their website. Are the CNN.com people just slow on the draw or did CNN crap the bed on this one and sent it down the memory hole?

Update: Can’t find it on the wires yet but Fox and CNN are reporting that the AP claims two arrests have been made in northern England in connection with the attack. Update: All right, here’s the link. There’s nothing more than a sentence about it thus far. You’ll remember from the previous thread that a counterterror official told the Blotter the cell in this case could reach 20 people. If all the reports so far are true, we’re up to at least six: the Mercedes driver yesterday, the three(?) jihadis today, and now the two arrestees. The Observer claims that police sources tell them “they were now investigating the existence of an Islamic terror cell in the capital. One major branch of the inquiry is tracking down a number of terror suspects who have slipped their control orders, a development that raises fresh questions over their effectiveness.” That number, according to the Independent, is three, including a suspect of Algerian descent who “talked about wanting to blow up a nightclub.” You’ll recall from the Scotsman piece mentioned in the previous thread that they’re also looking for an Iraqi suspect who skipped out on his control order a few weeks ago.

What’s Gordon Brown going to do about all these guys slipping the noose? A lot, maybe:

The Prime Minister has already asked his policy officials to devise a way of extending from 28 days the time that terrorist suspects can be detained without charge. He favours a limit of 90 days – a controversial move that in 2005 led to the Government’s first defeat in the Commons. To try to win over sceptical Labour MPs, concerned that locking up terror suspects without charge for almost three months severely breaches their civil liberties, Mr Brown is planning to bring in a number of safeguards.

He will offer Parliament and the judiciary more powers to oversee detentions and allow the courts to review the incarcerations weekly, while introducing an independent review process and annual reports to Parliament to boost accountability. In a clear indication that the new Prime Minister is prepared to curtail personal liberties in order to catch the most dangerous terror suspects, Mr Brown is planning – in the case of terrorism – to lift the ban on questioning suspects after charges have been brought.

He is also to look again at allowing phone-tap evidence to be used in court if it can help convict terrorists. This would please civil liberties campaigners, who have argued that terror suspects should be put on trial rather than be held under virtual house arrest.

Update: Meanwhile, the Telegraph looks on the bright side:

The decision not to use suicide bombers is regarded as noteworthy because it makes the planning of operations far more complex. It may also suggest a shortage of volunteers prepared to die in al-Qaeda’s pursuit of global holy war…

The type of bombs used suggest that al-Qaeda militants have been unable to get hold of Semtex, the high explosive that was commonly used by the IRA. Had the car bombs detonated, however, they would have created a fireball the size of a large house and spread a shockwave for 400 yards.

The Observer explains the lack of suicide bombers yesterday this way: “[A]lmost all strikes directly commissioned by the ‘al-Qaeda hardcore’ of Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri involve the death of the bombers. This change is unlikely to be a deliberate tactic, but probably indicates a lack of long-term psychological preparation of the bombers who, if recent trends are anything to go by, are likely to be young, (possibly in their late teens) and to have been radicalised very rapidly.”

Update: CNN’s finally added the bit about the third suspect to its story on this and includes and adds a detail to the arrests of the two new suspects — they’re wanted in connection with both today’s attack and the car bombs yesterday.

Update: The Observer names the Algerian suspect — Lamine Adam, along with his brother Ibrahim and another guy who skipped out on his control order named Cerie Bullivant — and explains how British intel could have missed this plot. Put simply, too many jihadis, too few MI5:

Initial concerns suggest that the security services may have switched surveillance from the car bombers on to other suspects, leaving them at liberty to hastily create, plan and target London clubbers early on Friday morning.

The security services concede it was ‘possible’ they had been monitoring those involved in the double car bomb cell at some stage, which will also fuel the debate on whether MI5 has sufficient resources. Police candidly accept that they cannot monitor everyone they believe is a threat. In reality, only those whom they believe are involved in ‘attack planning’ are accorded serious attention, with a continual ‘managing of risk’ between the danger posed by individuals. People can move in and out of surveillance, depending on that analysis…

Around 50 Islamic extremist cells are ‘active’ in the UK, with about 300 extremists under constant surveillance… About 1,500 Britons are known to the police and security services as possible terror suspects…

Other control-order fugitives among the suspects are Bestun Salim and Zeeshan Siddiqui, who trained in Pakistan with the London bombers.

Update: The Times of London is reporting that an intelligence analysis prepared last April warned of terror attacks that might coincide with a changeover in British leadership. The Tories are naturally demanding to know why the terror alert wasn’t raised preemptively then, but good luck convincing anyone that that would have helped. As for this:

The JTAC document highlighted intelligence that Al-Qaeda cells in Iran were in contact with operatives in Britain. The report stated there was no specific intelligence of an attack on British soil, but added: “Recent reporting has described [Al-Qaeda’s] Kurdish network in Iran planning what we believe may be a large-scale attack against a western target.

It’s a fine piece of alarmist rhetoric, but needless to say, a joint AQ-Iran operation would have run a lot more smoothly and packed a considerably bigger wallop than these attacks did.

It’s also possible these guys were already being sought in connection with the London plot – they knew it was a matter of time before they were apprehended and decided to go out in a blaze of glory. Given how haphazard this seems, that was my immediate suspicion.

My guess is that the jihadi opened the valve on one of the propane tanks, figuring to fill the car with propane vapor. His erratic driving caused the tank to tip over and discharge liquid. This scenario would have put the propane concentration above the UEL in a few seconds.
RedWinged Blackbird on June 30, 2007 at 5:13 PM

Yes, my assumption on the “smoke” being gasoline vapors was based on the information that had been released at the time and without actually being there to see the “smoke” it’s difficult to tell if it was actual smoke from a fire (although no one reported seeing flames) or if the gasoline vapors were so thick or in aerosol form you could visually see it, but as you pointed out it makes more sense that the “smoke” that was seen was propane and/or butane that was released by the terrorist creating a white cloud like mist that could be confused with “smoke.”

I also concur because the car had its windows and doors closed it immediately went to the UEL (too rich) for ignition, this would also explain the video footage from the CSTV of the terrorist staggering when exiting the vehicle, he was probably very close to being asphyxiated.

After the terrorist left the vehicle with the doors open the mixture went to the LEL, it was just sheer luck they didn’t trigger the device when the air fuel mixture was between the LEL and UEL, thank goodness!

Redwinged, are you familiar with what a BLEVE is? It seems to me this is what the terrorists are (intentionally or unintentionally) trying to create with these devices. Also, what field are you in, since you seem to be familiar with my field you may want to visit my website, it’s dedicated to the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) profession. Just click on my name in my post and it will take you to my site. If you have a moment please give us some feedback on the site and tell us what you think, it’s always appreciated.

BLEVE = “Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion” for those that don’t know the acronym. They make for pretty spectacular explosions in fire+hazardous materials situations, but are pretty hard to plan. I think it more likely that they were trying the fuel-air explosive route, but those are trickly as well as the fuel and oxygen have to be at the right levels (between the Upper Explosive Limit and the Lower Explosive Limit) when the ignition source is applied. To get a good explosion, the fuel need to be uniformly distributed over an area very quickly and then the ignition source needs to be applied immediately thereafter. Not as easy as it sounds.

BLEVE – Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion

I once calculated the BLEVE radius for a 10,000-gallon propane storage tank. As I recall, it was about 1/4 mile, but it’s been a long time. I’m an aerosol product development chemist. Propane, butane and blends thereof are commonly used as aerosol propellants. I’ve bookmarked your site and will check it out next week.

Dusty on June 30, 2007 at 6:36 PM

My guess would be Khat. It’s a stimulant used in the horn of Africa and in the Middle East. I know that these guys were from “Asia” (Pakistan, cough cough). Khat is the substance that the Somalis were using when they were charging at our troops during the Blackhawk Down battle. It is like a super amphetamine.

Just a guess….

reppac122 on June 30, 2007 at 6:44 PM

They make for pretty spectacular explosions in fire+hazardous materials situations, but are pretty hard to plan.

True. As I recall, the container has to be punctured and the escaping gas ignited. The container then has to be heated, which doesn’t happen naturally. Contrary to instinctive reasoning, the escaping gas actually causes the container to cool – evaporative heat loss. Of course, a gasoline fire will heat the container, but it will likely burst before a BLEVE occurs.

To get a good explosion, the fuel need to be uniformly distributed over an area very quickly and then the ignition source needs to be applied immediately thereafter.

This presents another technical problem for the jihadist. Propane does not mix uniformly with air without thorough and constant circulation. Propane vapor is heavier than air, so it tends to accumulate at the bottom of the container, in this case, the car. In other words, there will be a vertical gradient in the propane concentration, so part of the vehicle may be above the UEL while part is below the LEL. Where do you place the ignition device?

I don’t think khat is really that powerful a stimulant unless you chew a ton of the stuff.

There’s no evidence other than bad driving that these guys were high on anything but the Unholy Spirit, but it’s not unheard of. I’d like to see an autopsy of the well-done one.

I’m still throwing it out there that they could have been AQ trained. But that doesn’t necessarily indicate quality, viz kamikazes at the end of ww2, or AQ cells so disrupted, disorganized, unfunded, etc, that they had to reach to the bottom of the barrel to find some willing participants, and all they got were these clowns. Desperate times and all that stuff.

You can always find a few chumps to throw on some baggy pants and grease paint. Don’t mean they can juggle.

Would it be too much to hope that this isn’t glossed over as a terrorist attack by Islamic extremists?

Going off of the news reports, this is yet another example of members of the “religion of peace” seeking to take out as many people as they can!

I fully understand that not every Muslim is a Jihadist BUT every Jihadist is a Muslim! Time to stop the denial and start dealing this situation for what it is. In short, we need to go out after the Muslim extremists with the same zeal the Clinton administration went out after abortion clinic bombers, the Branch Davidians, and supporters of Elian Gonzales “illegal” presence in this nation.

After listening off and on to the ‘terrorism experts’ on the news today, I’ve had my earlier observations reconfirmed: If it is a muslim doing something bad, it HAS to be connected to Al Qaeda. If they can’t immediately blame it on Bin Laden (who is long dead) or Zawahiri, then it isn’t ‘officially’ terrorism, but regular crime committed by disaffected youths who just happen to, maybe, be muslims.

So much effort is made by these ‘experts’ and politicians to avoid connecting the dots in the broader, realistic sense that they don’t have to be recruited and trained by a specific organization to be a terrorist that they will never be able to make the right long-term decisions to protect themselves.

Thank God, (literally and figuratively) that the run of the mill ‘home-grown disaffected youth’ is not by nature very bright when it comes to mission planning or technology.

These were only poor illegal aliens doing jobs that Americans are “unwilling to do.” When they recover from their injuries Bush can invite then here and give them amnesty. If anyone complains about this. Howdy Doody in South Carolina can call them “racists.” MaiDee

MaiDee yes! Clinton brought out tanks at Waco but he bombed Kosovo from 20,000 feet to avoid controversy. He sent guys with automatics to thrash vicious Cuban-Americans to get Elian out of the Satan hell of the USA but sent a couple FBI guys to do an insurance assessment of the hole blown in the USS Cole.

Bush welcomes trespassers but hates vigilantes. A good person to Bush is someone who will swim a river to be a chicken plucker in Arkansas. A bad person is the guy trying to hold onto his chicken plucking way of life by building a fence on the border

Words mean somthing. Instead of calling these fried guys ‘islamic terrorists’ or ‘islamofascists’ we should call them ‘Christians’. That would bring out tanks and sniper squads.

Better yet call them ‘Israeli terrorists’. Then the UN would send help. Think of headline: ‘Israeli terror car fire bombs helpless scots socialists’. or ‘Israelis set car bomb loaded with nails on hapless sharia club’

Darn, they already blamed the Jews for all this didn’t they? I am confused

To start instead of calling anyone ‘muslims’ why not call them ‘muffins’. Isn’t that nicer?

Not a bad idea. Everyone like muffins!

And to take care of the evil *Israelis terrorists*, all we need is to fix the map at the UN so we can move the word “Israel” by remote control.

Not directly on the subject, here is why there is a problem with misunderstanding the “religion of peace” here in America.

The the Baton Rouge Sunday Advocate top center headline reads “Terrorists attack again in Britain.” While unusual for the paper, there is no mention of Muslim connection on the front page.

Now The Times-Picayune (New Orleans) the incident rated a spot at the bottom of the front page with a small photo whose headline reads “ATTACK IN GLASGOW.” There also is no mention of the Muslim connection in the small blurb on the front page which amounted to a full sentence of caption. This paper usually never mentions Muslim connection to any terrorist attacks at all and they never receive top billing.

I wish this could be laughed off as just sick humor, but with 50+ percent of Allahpundits atheist buddies thinking that Christian extremists are worse than Islamic terrorist it has a ring of truth to it that is just plain disturbing…

Love this quote from the ignorant rabble at the New York Times…

“In July 2005, four suicide bombers killed 52 people on London’s transit system, and another set of attacks failed two weeks later, bringing home to Britain fears of homegrown terrorist attacks among it’s. Witnesses said the two men in the Glasgow attack were South Asian.”

In it’s pathetic attempt to portray the terrorists as victims by describing them as “disenfranchised” the NYT shows it’s complete ignorance of Britain’s immigrant populations.
One) All South Asian Britons of voting age can vote – therefore they are not
“disenfranchised” in the voting sense
Two) South Asian also describes immigrants from India who are mostly Hindu. While Pakistanis (muslim) have high unemployment rates the Indian Hindu population are extremely upwardly mobile – many of them are doctors, lawyers, bankers and businessmen and their children form the highest percentage of university graduates. Both these groups are identitical in physical appearence so the poor performance of Pakistanis in our culture is nothing to do with racism or being “disenfranchised ” for their skin colour.
Three) Unempolyment rates are high in many white and Afro-Carribean areas of Britain but for some reason they don’t want to murder women and children by turning them into fireballs.
Four) The 7/7 bombers are came from middle-class backgrounds and were financially better off than many of their white counterparts and were in no way “disenfranchised”
Five) Why does the NYT not mention the religion of these South Asians it sees as victims ?
Six) why is the NYT such a sick joke ?

London Boy on July 1, 2007 at 2:43 PM

Okay, I screwed up my last post in a big way …the NYT quote actually read…

“In July 2005, four suicide bombers killed 52 people on London’s transit system, and another set of attacks failed two weeks later, bringing home to Britain fears of homegrown terrorist attacks among its disenfranchised South Asian population. Witnesses said the two men in the Glasgow attack were South Asian.”

Okay, I hope that makes more sense.

In their defense, while I’ve no doubt the perpetrators will indeed turn out to be Muslim, and I’ve also no doubt that when such is clearly revealed most newspapers will still downplay the fact, at the moment the identities of those involved have not yet been released. So while I’m sure it’s safe to bet your house that they are in fact Islamist terrorists, and there are eyewitness accounts that tend to support the notion, it might still be presumptious, as of right now, for newspapers to report such as if it were clearly established to be true.

forest on July 1, 2007 at 6:06 PM

How right you are Blacklake, BUT the Times Picayune seldom (not in recent memory since my wife discovered the disconnect) will use the term Muslim even when the AP Newswire does so. As a contrast, the Advocate does use the term Muslim.

So the poplulace of New Orleans is about 80% Democrat, even after Katrina, while Baton Rouge is definitey conservative. We live in Baton Rouge and do recognize that both our mayor (black) and police chief (creole) are definitely morally conservative.
