Video: Subway customer shoots robbers

This is what licensed carry is all about.

According to investigators, two armed men entered the restaurant, pointing guns and demanding money. One customer turned around and saw a gun pointed at his face. Plantation police said that’s when the customer took the law into his own hands.

“As the customer was being forced into the restroom at gunpoint, the customer, who was in fear for his life and legally armed, shot the robbery suspects,” said Plantation Police Dept. Spokesman Robert Rittig.

Police said one of the suspects was fatally shot in the head. The other man was shot in the chest and was able to run nearly 300 yards into a nearby Bank Atlantic parking lot while trying to escape, police said.

Click to watch a video report. It may be the only time you hear a reporter describe someone who shoots and kills in legitimate self-defense as “legally armed and well within his rights.”

Nice shot! Chalk one up for the second amendment!

And you’re right Bryan, this will probably be the only time I EVER hear a reporter call someone who shoots in self-defense as “-legally- armed and well within his rights.”

At least someone reported fairly on armed citizens for once.

Who knows what would’ve happened to everyone there if this customer hadn’t been there. They might all be dead. I’m also glad to hear the police say he was legally armed, too. He (I’m assuming he, but hey, my mom carries legally also) probably saved everyone there, and I hope the police don’t cause a lot of grief for him. Even though he was right, it would still be hard knowing you took a life, even the life of a dirtbag.

The dead suspect’s relatives will probably bring a wronful death suit against the shooter. Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

I hope the criminal starts fearing the honest citizen instead of the other way around…

I’m not celebrating, I just think it good to see these crooks finally get a dose of their own medicine.

I can’t wait to hear what the left has to say about this “horrible vigilante” who “took the law into his own hands”.

BadBrad on June 28, 2007 at 9:28 AM

Why not celebrate? If you don’t want to get killed, don’t rob the Subway and don’t threaten people point of gun.

So Mr. Shakespear says if he’d arrived five or ten minutes earlier, “…how do I know he wounldn’t have shot me?” Well Sebastian, perhaps one of the THUGS would have shot you instead. The key here seems to be, don’t go into a store waving a firearm and behaving in a threatening manner. THAT’S WHY THEY WERE SHOT!

If the police in Plantation have any decency, they will send the citizen home with a free box of doughnuts and a thank you note.

oldleprechaun on June 28, 2007 at 9:32 AM

I’ve brought this point up before, but does anyone remember a few months back the NYT has a nice graphical representation of gun deaths in America. It broke it down by murder and suicide and by sex and race. However it did not have a category for criminals shot by citizens “legally armed and well within their(his) rights.” Every time I hear a story like this, and there have been a few, I wonder how often this does happen in relations to other gun deaths.

I think it is a cause for celebration. That citizen struck a blow against lawlessness.

Its all to normal for law abiding citizens to be victimized by these types of thugs.

This armed madman shot two of society’s youngest victims. Did this homocidal monster even give them a verbal warning before ending one of their lives? Of course not! No doubt he is a NRA Republican racist bigot who was gleefully looking forward to depriving these young men of their future happiness.
If only Bush and Haliburton had not taken us into Iraq, and ended all our Constitutional rights, these innocent victims would be alive today. The ACLU, PETA and CAIR should sue Subway for allowing capitialistic dens for the eating of animal flesh to exist. The very presence of such anti-animal slaughterhouses incites innocents into crimes of passion, and lures these innocent uneducated, honor students into a situations were they were not responsible for any of their actions.

Standing O for the shooter, nonetheless. Two men enter, both leave in a meat wagon. Woohoooo!

Jaibones on June 28, 2007 at 10:33 AM

This seems to be a scenario in which the liberal anti-gun person, male or female, would not fight back but wait for police. That is their position, and it makes little sense.

This gentleman may have saved his life and other’s.

The liberal who would not use a gun and who would recommend waiting for the cops, with their guns, would very likely be dead and others would very likely be dead.

benrand on June 28, 2007 at 10:37 AM

Including Jared, that makes at least three who’ve lost weight at Subway.

sacerdos on June 28, 2007 at 10:37 AM

Our nation’s gun control laws never effect the criminals decision whether to carry a firearm or not.

Actually, I would think they affect them–inversely. There was a recent study that showed the death penalty does indeed have a deterent effect. I’m sure the removal of gun control laws would also reduce significant amounts of crime. In Texas, we have very little gun control and lots of executions. And our senators are right on the immigration issue, too! It’s such a great place to be.

Ce-e-e-elebration time, come on!

urbancenturion on June 28, 2007 at 10:37 AM

I’m not going to celebrate death, but I will say that man did the right thing. He was put in a situation where it could have been him or another innocent person dead instead of these two thugs.

I was going to say that this isn’t a cause for celebration but simply of approval, but I’ve changed my mind.

A citizen defended himself. That’s a cause worthy of celebration. I won’t celebrate the death, but I’ll celebrate the person who saved his own life. That man was being pushed into a bathroom by an armed man. He could have been killed.

I’m very happy that he’s wasn’t murdered and that a fellow law-abiding citizen has taken care of himself.

That is cause for celebration.

Esthier on June 28, 2007 at 10:46 AM

Bravo for the Armed Citizen.

While I appreciate a reporter or police spokesman at least referring to the customer as legally armed and acting within his rights, there is a bothersome aspect.
That being, constitutionally any armed citizen is “legal” unless by their actions they have forfeited the natural right to bear arms, and it should go without saying that defense of yourself, family or other law abiding citizens is “within your rights”. Although I welcome CC laws, I guess my point is, had this fellow not been a CC permit holder he would have been no less morally justified in his actions.

Florida has Castle Doctrine, so it’s probably not that unusual to hear “legally armed and well within his rights.” Maybe on the news, though.

I feel awful for the guy, being forced to do this. But so glad for him and his family that he made the right decision, and walked away alive.

Tanya on June 28, 2007 at 12:20 PM

And I say the law should be; when a gun is drawn and pointed at someone, that victim will always have the legal right to have a firearm.

It may be illegal to walk around with a concealed weapon…but should never be illegal to defend yourself.

Defense of your (or your families) life, trumps all other laws.

right2bright on June 28, 2007 at 12:21 PM

There were many reasons why the founders created the second amendment. Protection of liberty, property, and life had to be in the top three reasons.

Tragedy? Only if the robbers had killed an employee or customer.

Celebration? Protection from those who would violate our second amendment is cause enough.

There are enough gun laws that are not being enforced, like our border laws. Find lawlessness existing where citizens are not armed to protect themselves.

As for the dead robber and his partner soon to be pushing up the daisies, I’m glad you’re fertilizer.

This story brings back old memories:
I witnessed what I later learned was a father/son team robbing a small steak-n-egg store on a snowy winter day in 1976. As the robbers were leaving, the boy (about 16) turned and fired through the door glass at the store owner. He missed. The owner then returned fire, about 5-6 shots, from what sounded like a magnum revolver. The boy was struck in the face and chest and dropped on the spot. His father left him lying and bleeding in the snow and sped off in the getaway car. I was the first one to reach the boy. He died a terrible, gurgling death as I knelt by his side. There was nothing I could do. It was horrific. His father got away with a whopping $50. The son was about my age at the time. What a waste.

Later, I saw many similar deaths while serving in the US Cavalry. I wish I could send all those memories back and get them out of my head. But I’d be the first to pop a cap in a robbers a$$ in a similar situation. I’d do it in a New York minute.

Often a robber will have people move to a back room in order to make sure the bodies are out of sight long enough for him to get away. take a look at crime stats where the victim was out of sight. If you have the means to defend yourself, NEVER, EVER, go into an un-windowed room at the behest of an armed robber if you can avoid it.

locomotivebreath1901 on June 28, 2007 at 10:08 AM

The only thing that I disagree with is why should you have to have a license to carry?

The second amendment gives us the right to carry and says nothing about have to get a license.

I am a member of gunowners.org and all Americans should be very concerned right now. The ATF is systematically closing down gun shops across the nation using paper work technicalities. They have been successful in shutting down over half the Gun Dealers in the USA in the last 15 years.

In addition,Carolyn McCarthy was able to ram her new massive gun control bill, H.R. 2640, using secret closed door back room deals and was successful in getting passed by a voice vote only on June 13th.

GOA analysis:

“Consider the facts. In 1968, Congress laid out several criteria for banning Americans from owning guns — a person can’t be a felon, a drug user, an illegal alien, etc. Well, one of the criteria which will disqualify you from owning or buying a gun is if you are “adjudicated as a mental defective.” Now, in 1968, that term referred to a person who was judged not guilty of a crime by reason of insanity.

Well, that was 1968. By 2000, President Bill Clinton had stretched that definition to mean a military veteran who has had a lawful authority (like a shrink) decree that a person has PTS. Can you see how politicians love to stretch the meaning of words in the law… especially when it comes to banning guns?

After all, who would have thought when the original Brady law was passed in 1993, that it would be used to keep people with outstanding traffic tickets from buying guns; or couples with marriage problems from buying guns; or military vets with nightmares from buying guns?”

I urge all of you that value your 2nd amendment rights to contact your senators and have them oppose H.R. 2640.The Gun Grabbers are still working behind the scenes to take away your right to own a firearm.

sadly, that reporter was only mouthing the quote from the police when he said ‘legally armed and well within his rights.’

The newspaper characterized the situation:

Plantation police said that’s when he took the law into his own hands.

What a load of crap. Some others have commented on this already but I have to pile on. This is the exact polar opposite of being “well within his rights.” Given the events in this story, it is unbelieveable to me that the reporter still feels the need to cast aspersions on this 70 year old man’s actions as lawless.

It’s a shining example of the MSM’s ignorance and bias on the issue of gun ownership and use, in the face of a clear illustration of how the second amendment is a blessing for the citizens of our nation.

Also a complete mischaracterization of the police statment. Dishonest in the extreme.

TexasDan on June 28, 2007 at 2:24 PM

It may be the only time you hear a reporter describe someone who shoots and kills in legitimate self-defense as “legally armed and well within his rights.”

Hmm. Does John Stossel count as a reporter?

Joey1974,

Yea it was…but it’s normal blog spout on the Left Coast. I occasionally post in a famous far lefty blog,( different userid) in an identical “way over the top” progressive style and last week I was invited to become a moderator…and I accepted…and I’ll do a great job too.. I have come to understand that these are not bad people, just uninformed and unknowledgeable about the world, history, and human nature..Well, some are over medicated.

{No folks, I never cross post the incendiary stuff that gives ‘em a bad rap, just a sweet bit of irony and sarcasm…that they obviously love.}

Plantation police said that’s when the customer took the law into his own hands.

I don’t know if the writer here is being drearily trite or deliberately sleazy, but it’s the reporter saying the customer “took the law into his own hands,” not the police. And whoever said it, the claim is utterly false. The customer absolutely did not supplant the rule of law with his own judgment; he legally defended himself within the clearly defined confines of the law.

The sad thing is, this is about as close to a pro-carry article as you’re going to find.

And the customer that protected himself was 71 years old.

There was the marine earlier this week defending himself, also in his 70’s.

And I came across this story about an 87 year old woman who set a bear snare, shot the bear when she caught it, then climbed a tree to hoist the 440 pound body into the truck!

Money Quote: “We tied a rope on it, and I couldn’t get it out, so I went up in a tree and I hooked it around some limbs on a big spruce there, and he backed the truck right in under the tree for me, and I lowered it down in the truck,” she explained.

Let’s here it for the seniors.

The only thing unusual about this story is that it got some publicity.

I happened to be in Fort Wayne a year or two back for a few months and there were three incidents where citizens with concealed carry permits shot a robber to death. One at a liquor store, one a gas station, and the last in his own home.

From what I could tell, Indiana has the best concealed carry laws in the country. And they honor CCPs from all other States.

Make that guy a hero sandwich!

sonnyspats1 on June 28, 2007 at 4:00 PM

Reminds me of the scene in Indiana Jones where he shoots the guy brandishing a sword. I laughed and clapped my hands. I’m doing the same right now.

It in not the primary responsibility of police to protect anyone. They are to enforce the law (Lar for those of you who wish John Kerry was POTUS).
Point is…You are your own first responder. This gentleman proves the point. If he were my father or grandfather or even an acquaintance; I would give him a hug and tell him “I’m sorry you had to go through such an ordeal but thank you for having the balls to do what you know is right!”

I think stories like this are great. Like the ex-marine that beat up the pickpocket. people are just sick of being pushed around.

I’m not going to celebrate death, but I will say that man did the right thing. He was put in a situation where it could have been him or another innocent person dead instead of these two thugs.

I’m celebrating LIFE! The lives of the law abiding citizens!
