He looks stricken. I trust you feel as bad as I do. FYI, what you can’t hear him saying at the very beginning of the clip because the dopey anchor is talking over him is, “Legal immigration is one of the top concerns of the American people, and Congress’ failure to act on it is a disappointment.” Uh huh.
Elsewhere, Pelosi blames Republicans for the failure of this spectacularly craptastic bill. You’re welcome.

This was posted on the 1000+ comment thread but I thought it was so funny that I brought it over here just in case you missed it, thought it was too good to pass up after watching our dear arrogant POTUS just now. FYI Senor Bush, Congress finally did show America today that it could come together on the hard issues…at least on the hard issue of whether you ever want to be reelected.
hollygolightly on June 28, 2007 at 5:02 PM
The WSJ rebuts none of the arguments given by the Heritage Foundation, NRO or anywhere else. It just labeled us bigots and moved on. That’s what elitist whites like the WSJ editorial board, Chertoff, the President, and Ted Kennedy do when they can’t compete intellectually.
If this bill had been done through the committee process, had included enforcement first, and if the Bush regime had any credibility on enforcement, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Instead, it was to be 1986 all over again, and everyone knew it.
We got a little tired of the disingenuous attacks from Skeletor, Bush, and McGrahamnesty about our supposed ‘bigotry.’ Next time, if they want to argue in good faith without impugning motives, they might have some support. As it stands now, Bush is 10s of thousands in debt as far as political capital is concerned, so this bill won’t be back.

I just wish President Bush and congress would realize we want to secure the border first. What is so hard about this???

infidel4life on June 28, 2007 at 5:05 PM
So let’s get this straight…The Republican power structure, the Democratic party,MSM, and Corporate America, all team up and can’t pass this bill?
And they are upset and disappointed?
Maybe something about “we the people”…they should be rejoicing, we the people have stated our desires…now go forth and fulfill.

President Felipe Calderon of Mexico reacted sourly to news of the Senate’s rejection of the proposed immigration law overhaul, calling the senators’ action “a grave error.”"It’s a grave mistake first because it’s a problem that’s not being confronted, and with this evasive action the U.S. Senate is making it worse,”

None of your business Felipe. Mexico would be better served if you channeled your energy to fix the cesspool you call a country and leave the running of the USA to the legal people of the USA.
Wade on June 28, 2007 at 5:13 PM
For once your right Tomas, we do propose to do the following.
1) Fence the border to prevent more form shooting the 800 mile gap.
2) Make hiring of illegals punishable by $50k fine per illegal.
3) Make sanctuary cities illegal.
4) Absolutely no social programs for the fence jumpers what so ever.
Surely, those that are here illegally will pack and go back to wherever they came from.
After this is accomplished we can perhaps talk about a guest worker plan.

I would like to see our President (Commander in Chief) take Ted Kennedy, John McCain, Kyl, Reid, and the other fools in the Senate that voted for this ridiculous Amnesty Bill that is totally against the will of the American People, and go to Arlington National Cemetery in DC look over the graves and explain to the BRAVE men and women that gave their lives for the freedom of America why their Senators are flushing our freedom and country down the toilet. Next, Ted Kennedy should go visit his brother’s grave and ask for forgiveness for selling out our country.
Then John McCain should take the group to Walter Reeds Hospital and tell our brave wounded soldiers why their Commander in Chief is trying to grant Amnesty to 12-20 million illegal aliens, while turning his back on America and the people who belong here – legally.

While read your blog posting concerning the Senate and the “Shamnesty” debate and cloture vote I am listening to Rush Limbaugh via the WOAI listen live fed.
They are currently on break for top of the hour news. They just played a clip of President Bush saying, and paraphrasing, The American people are very concerned about the immigration issue. It is a shame that the Senate/Congress have not acted on it.
Didn’t the Senate just vote for cloture? Didn’t they vote for cloture because they finally woke up and listened to the American people?
I believe President Bush purposely made that misleading statement to make it sound like the Senate is DOING NOTHING, when actually the are doing something…………listening to the American people and voting against his Amnesty bill.
It’s not that they’re not doing nothing. They are not giving amnesty to illegal aliens.

Way to p-off your base Mr. President. Instead of focusing your attention on the strict enforement of current laws and the building of a border fence, you will become the first President in modern times to have an approval rating less than 20%. Sorry if I am being harsh Mr. President. I have stuck by you through thick and thin. This is a huge dealbreaker. I support you on the war. I support you on economics (at least economics based on American patriotism). You are a big disappointment to me and millions of other Americans. You have no one to blame for this Shamnesty mess but yourself. This was never about immigrants in reality; this was about legacy. That is where you went wrong. Please, for the remainder of your term, do what’s right: fight terrorism, win the war in Iraq, beat back the liberals in the Senate and House, fight for tax breaks, encourage economic growth, and build a border fence..North and South! In the end, your Presidency might be vindicated, but not for this shamnesty bill.

Tomas:
Stream-of-consciousness thinking is no way to go through life, Son.
The fact remains that no Administration and no Congress has given a damn about our borders. When you don’t have a border, you really don’t have a country, anymore – it’s pure and simple logic. America is being Balkanized; and it’s been going on for years, by design. That’s why nothing has been done. Welcome to the New World Order. I’m sure that Mr. Bush is aware of who helped to coin that phrase.
OhEssYouCowboys on June 28, 2007 at 5:35 PM
Mark my words, this man is not yet done, he will use whatever means are at his disposal in order to facilitate an increase in mass migration and legalize every possible person on our soil and he will use “the American people want this” as his guise as he tries again and again to pull the wool over our eyes all the while subverting our will as he assures that his personal agenda will be fulfilled.
Cicero was right, a murderer is less to fear.
Speakup on June 28, 2007 at 5:36 PM
Its time to stop letting the Dems frame this as a Republican bill. Its a Democratic Majority. You wants the power you gets the blame.
Harry Reid & Ted Kennedy brought this bill to the floor. They wrote it (ok it was their staffers but they sign it, ok they sign for Teddy too) and they tried to force it on us twice. Hell Reid set it up so that Republicans didn’t even get to have a say on the bill.
This abaltross needs to be hung from Reid and Kennedy’s neck.
Iblis on June 28, 2007 at 5:45 PM
As a compassionate conservative, I feel his pain. Now do your job and enforce the damn law!
Valiant on June 28, 2007 at 5:45 PM
Oh noes, we’ll lose the 20% of the voters who supported this bill as it was written (who are mostly Democrats) while only keeping the 60+% of the people who thought this bill shouldn’t be passed (including the base). What a travesty.
Yep, that’ll end the party for sure. Are you a Bush advisor? The suggesting that tanking the base for a potential minority support from a slice of the opposition is a “good plan” is a bit of a clue here…
Now I’m sure Jummy will explain how approximately 60% of the country is simply racist white redneck GOPs… odd that the city folk are that badly outnumbered. How did the country end up with such a driving majority of racists? And how could a party with a 60% membership lose an election?
Wouldn’t a lot of that 60% not in support of the bill have to be other than GOP redneck hillbillies?
Although he usually doesn’t actually respond to criticism or facts, so we migth not see an explanation of why he’s denigrating a majority of the country for their foolishly not agreeing with him and his ideas that are obvious superior to the racist redneck idiot opposition.
Jummy, next time, bring facts and information; calling your opposition racist without bringing any argument, facts, information, numbers, or information of any kind is getting old.

And neither will he. The term ‘lame duck’ was never more appropriate.
infidel4life on June 28, 2007 at 5:49 PM
JummyAddendum to previous post. If the WSJ is right about the non cloture hurting the Republicans how do you account for the lack of attendance at the luncheon with Karl Rove as a speaker. Many corporations rolled out the green carpet and the third world Pedros were to busy cutting lawns to show up. Bush is dreaming about the Mexicans he thinks they are like the Cubans of Miami. Cubans are closer to their Spanish roots than the Aztec/Incan Mexicans. I showcase my company twice a year at convention centers and the attendence is overwhelmingly Republican.
sonnyspats1 on June 28, 2007 at 5:55 PM
First, get over yourself.
Second, Bush has called me everything short of nazi for opposing this bill. Me calling him a man in search of a drink falls way short of the slurs he and his ilk have made about me and those here who have opposed it.
OrthodoxRobert on June 28, 2007 at 5:59 PM
This ws like a 12 round fight, and the opponent (Bush, Kennedy, etc..) kept hitting below the belt and never got penalized, then the crowd (American People) got restless and started to cheer for a knock out. And here we are a TKO.
americaslaststand on June 28, 2007 at 6:14 PM
how about this: you’re pulling figures out of your ass. opposition to the bill does not rise above 50% unless you’re counting the “not sure” responses according to the rassmussen poll. only 45% join you in believing nothing is better than something.
beyond that, where are the hearts of the american people? according to pew, only 46% see a fence as the panacea you percieve it to be. only 48% see immigrants as a threat to traditional american cultural values while 59 favor the earned citizenship provisions you equate with amnesty.

Those who still believe that the United States has the right to be a sovereign nation are meeting with increasing opposition. However, until Congress passes a law that states the invasion of the US via its borders is legal, it is still against the law.
You just called everyone who opposed the bill, racist. It is your contention that only bigot’s and racist’s would oppose this sham of a bill. Obviously, you’re a troll who snuck in on the open registration. Nothing you say here from this moment on will ever be taken seriously. Yeah, well I was filled with heartache when I saw what my party was trying to put over on the American people. I was seriously ticked at the condescention of Washington and commentators who insist that conservative radio incited the people…not that the people had the brains enough to actually read a bad bill, rebel against it and fight for its demise. They think we are dumb as dirt. Well, come 2008, we’ll show them how smart we really are and what long memories we have. There are going to be many incumbants out of work.
katieanne on June 28, 2007 at 7:44 PM
My feeling is, channeling my inner AP, nationally, that we can’t do much of anything but a preventative holding pattern till elections. We aren’t going to get any meaningful enforcement with Bush, and Hunter’s bill already provided the legislative framework for border security.
I’m not a pessimistic as AP re: primary candidates b/c the Dems swept in a ‘responsive’ Blue-dog democrat, so we should be able to do that too…but this is going to be a real test of the parties on a more local level.
That’s my prediction. Legislative activity on the state and local level akin to Hazelton.
This was a great day. I was not optimistic that the will of the people would prevail, but it has.

The biggest argument that RINOs use for this “piece of sh!t” bill is that we can’t deport 12 – 20 million. Then, they spew garbage about a “shiny wall”. Deportation and a wall are not necessary to get rid of illegals that are here to sponge off taxpayers. Panama City has found a way to move them along. Homeland Security can then go after terrorists that overstay visas, when Chertoff is done picking lettuce and fruit.

profitsbeard on June 28, 2007 at 10:13 PM
I just came up with a way to solve two problems with one solution. The argument that keeping the status quo on immigration is unacceptable could be taken a step further. Include that deporting 12 million illegals would put the country in a labor crunch as well as have detrimental effect on the economy. I think the Department of Homeland Security should declare an emergency. There are studies that show that this shortage of willing workers is a direct result of the legalization of abortion. The Supreme Court would then have a grounds to overturn Roe/Wade without the old moralistic/God argument.

This is a GREAT Victory for America – NOT a “Bash Bush” Rallying Point, and those – such as Laura Ingraham and others – who are TRYING to make it that are helping The Terrorists and The Liberals to eventually win.
We ALL knew that Bush supported this kind of “immigration” policy – he NEVER lied about that, or tried to fool anyone about it!
Yet – we voted for him KNOWING that – so stop Bashing Bush, and admit YOUR OWN participation in this, and ALSO admit the GREATER GOOD that Bush has done for our economy, the War Against Islamofascists and OTHER issues.
SECONDLY – BUSH DID NOT CREATE THIS PROBLEM – it’s been around for OVER the last 25 years. In fact, if you wanted to POINT A FINGER AT ANYONE over it, you should point it at – yes, the person at whose feet Laura I worships: RONALD REAGAN!!

I would like to post a portion of a letter that I wrote two Laura Ingraham when I canceled my membership to her site. A letter that, despite its thoughtful presentation and civil discourse, Laura has chosen not to respond to. This may help explain my comment above a bit better:
First, I need to assure you that I am against the current “immigration” (actually the “illegal immigration”) bill that is in Congress right now. I have spent a lot of time and money opposing this bill.
What I have not done is spend a great deal of time expressing contempt and hatred for Bush and other people who, misguided at times though they may be, are friends of conservatism and, more importantly – are on the RIGHT side of the War on The Terrorists.
I have disagreements with Bush, and with some of the folks in his administration – but I have not lost sight of the tactics that the enemies of our country and our freedom as Americans – The Terrorists and The Democrats (which are virtually the same in many cases) – are using to threaten our liberty.
The liberal left, The Terrorists and The Democrats all know that they cannot win a debate or a discussion of principles and ideas – they have none. They are not interested in a battle of ideas, they are ONLY interested in POWER. The easiest way for them to get power is to weaken the power of the people currently in power. Killing the power of their enemies results in their obtaining power – and AVOIDS any debate on ideas. As a result, they constantly use a very old idea: “cut off the head, and the body will die”. They realize that if they can get everyone to HATE BUSH – then they can project all of the principles of conservatism and freedom onto HIM through the Republicans and USE that hatred to destroy Bush – and therefore open the path for THEM to take power back. When it works it’s a brilliant plan – it facilitates The Terrorists and The Democrats receiving power without it EVER being voted to them. The get it by default – after their enemy is denigrated and disgraced by the propaganda of The Terrorists and The Democrats.
This is why – when we are criticizing Bush and his administration, caution is needed. This is because the PR arm of The Democrats and The Terrorists – our Mainstream Media – will NEVER report on the clash of ideas between conservatives who have the best intentions of our country and liberty at heart. They will wait until someone on what they perceive as the “conservative” side of the street criticizes ANY other conservative idea. They will then discern what they need to do to spin whatever legitimate ideological argument might have been made into something personal – preferably a personal attack on Bush. They can then present it as such – and pile on with their own added level of contempt and mocking hostility.
For the last few weeks – the level of invective on your show and the shrillness of your contempt for Bush has reached levels that not only facilitate – but encourages this behavior on the part of the Mainstream Terrorist Media. There’s been some MoveOn.org lunatic named “spathi” running around dissembling and posting links to obscene Bush-hating pictures and soft porn for the last week and a half. Despite being reported to your staff multiple times – no action to prevent this person from posting has occurred. They continue to post innumerable times each day through yesterday – when I canceled my subscription to your site. The one constant in all of the postings by this person, in addition to the embedded links to the Bush-hating pictures and soft porn – was the fact that they echoed your views of the immigration debate almost categorically, not to mention the tone of contempt that you’ve been putting out for the last few weeks. This person is not ideologically committed to stopping a wrong-headed immigration plan: they are ideologically committed to HATING BUSH and USING that issue as a pry-bar to stir up contempt and hatred of Bush on your site to facilitate their REAL agenda: weakening their enemy to usurp power.
Your site – and you, though perhaps inadvertently, helped them in that cause.

I have just emailed our Secretary of State for Colorado to see what a person had to do to recall Sen. Salazar. There are 18 states which have provisions to do so. Just google “recall a US senator” and you will find a page that lists the states and go from there.

Considering that coyotes smuggle illegals into the U.S., that sounds about right.
Zing!

It is times like this when President Bush is on the wrong side of an issue that I remember a quote by Fred Barnes:
Bush, of course, is a conservative, but a different kind of conservative. His tax cuts, support for social issues, hawkish position on national security and terrorism, and rejection of the Kyoto protocols make him so. He’s also killed the ABM and Comprehensive Test Ban treaties, kept the United States out of the international criminal court, defied the United Nations, and advocated a shift in power from Washington to individuals through an “ownership society.” On some issues–partial privatization of Social Security is the best example–he is a bolder conservative than Ronald Reagan, the epitome of a conventional conservative.
And his biggest legacy: He appointed Justices Roberts and Alito to the Supreme Court. We shouldn’t let one issue–in this case immigration–make us bitter and make us enemies of President Bush. He’s done a lot of good. Versus perfection, he hasn’t done well. Versus what a Democrat in the Oval Office would’ve done these last six years, he has been a smashing success. Perspective, folks. Don’t forget all the good President Bush has done. I admire and love the man.

Well Jummy, we both missed. Rasmussen’s poll has 50% against, 22% for, and 28% undecided. Odd that you didn’t go with the 50% opposition to the bill and latched onto the slightly lower 45% who think doing absolutely nothing is better than this bill.
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/just_22_favor_stalled_immigration_bill
So numbers from the link, rather than from my faulty memory. Of those decided 70% oppose the bill (50 vs 22), and 58% prefer nothing at all to this bill (45 vs 32).
Yep, that’s hearts and minds who like this bill alright.
On the 700 miles of fence, 46% for, 48% against. By party, Republicans are 65% for 29% against however. Wouldn’t you expect Republican Politicians to take the Republican side of issues?
http://pewresearch.org/pubs/450/immigration-wedge-issue
WHy do you give more credence to a Pew report from April 12th (before this bill, and the ensuing discussions and debates), instead of the Rasmussen report from June 25th?
I’d continue to debate, but your bigoted view of anyone who disagrees with you, while presuming the worst of motives of half the country makes me disinclined to bother.
I’m curious how with half the country being hayseed racists we don’t have a race war of massive proportions; but honestly, I’m not curious enough to endure the odd mental gmaes you have.
Nice putting words in my mouth, ideas in my head, and deciding what opinions I have. I’m sure that makes any debate much easier for you.
You keep setting that straw man up, knocking him down, and telling yourself how great you are.

The speech Bush will never make
Friday, June 29, 2007
By Joseph Farah of WorldNetDaily
President Bush’s public approval ratings are at an all-time low. It’s difficult to imagine how he could improve them dramatically with just about 18 months left in office.
But I do believe there is one speech he could make that would instantly increase his popularity by 50 percent to 100 percent. It’s a speech he will never give. Here is a rough draft of the text:
“My fellow Americans, I come before you today to admit a mistake and correct our course.
“I have made my case for comprehensive immigration reform as the proper way to address concerns over our border and the presence in our country of millions of undocumented workers.
“But I have failed to persuade the people of my convictions on this issue.
“Because America is a nation of immigrants, I believed – and still believe – that we can continue to absorb and assimilate millions of good, honest, decent, hard-working foreigners into our country.
“As I have said many times, I do not believe family values stop at the Rio Grande.
“In my opinion, the immigration course my administration has attempted to chart – one that would identify millions of undocumented workers already in this country and give them a pathway to citizenship – was the right one.
“There comes a time in responsible leadership when you must recognize you are out of step with the people. America is a sovereign nation governed by the rule of law and the will of the people.
“While I have done my best to convince the American people to my way of thinking, it is time to admit that is not going to happen during my tenure in the White House.
“Therefore, I am making this public announcement, for the benefit of members of Congress and in the interest of unifying our divided country: I have heard you speak, America. While I may disagree, while I may wish you were saying something else, while I would prefer you had heard me, I will honor your will on the issue of immigration and border security.
“The American people have spoken. What you have said is clear. You demand the federal government first secure our border and vigorously enforce immigration laws already on the books.
“Today I am issuing an executive order instructing all departments of the executive branch to do just that.
“Real border security will be our highest priority. And real enforcement of existing immigration laws will begin today – without excuses and without fail.
“There’s one more thing I would like to add.
“I want to apologize for flouting the will of the American people for so long. I want to apologize for my arrogance in pushing my own personal opinion for so long and so hard without listening to yours. I want to apologize for failing to do my duty as president in enforcing immigration laws.
“I will not be with you as president for much longer. In January 2009, I will hand over the reins of power to a successor. When I do, I intend to leave office with a clear conscience and the knowledge that I upheld my oath of office, followed the rule of law and attempted to adhere to the will of the people.
“I made mistakes, but I hope the American people will be forgiving and understand that I always earnestly sought to do what I believed was right.”

Dear Mr. President:
I know you are saddened by today’s event wherein the proposed Senate “Shamnesty” bill failed. I know you wanted this bill for your legacy. I contend Mr. President that had this bill passed, this country would have suffered under this bill and hence tarnishing your legacy.
You don’t know it, but this failure today will save your legacy tomorrow.
PS – Now build the Damn wall and enforce current law. Secure our borders. What you have done so far is a joke.
FLLaw33870 on June 29, 2007 at 10:45 AM
That’s it.
I’m no longer a Republican. I’m a conservative, plain & simple.
