We’re prepared for any contingency. Victory means a Humpbot cameo; defeat means I get tanked on hard liquor in the middle of the day. It’s win/win, really. The boss has already done a quickie round-up of stories this morning predicting the bill’s demise. John Hawkins’s Senate source lends his voice to the chorus:
To begin with, my source said he is guardedly optimistic that the bill will fail the 2nd cloture vote tomorrow. That is because he thinks that some of the senators who voted for cloture on Tuesday were doing so because they were being “senatorial” by allowing a debate. But, that only goes so far, and everyone realizes at this point that the Thursday vote is the final vote on amnesty as far as the base is concerned. In other words, a “yes” on cloture is a “yes” to amnesty.
At that point, I asked about the “fool the yahoos” maneuver. Will there be senators voting “yes” on cloture and then voting against the final bill and hoping that they can avoid being tagged as supporting amnesty? He said that because of all the attention this issue has gotten, the base isn’t going to be fooled and that anyone who does that will just have to hope that his election isn’t close enough that thousands conservatives sitting at home can swing it the other way.
McCain’s Iowa campaign chairman told WaPo yesterday he wished the issue of immigration had never come to the floor. As for St. John’s crony-in-chief, he’s featured prominently in the Times’s story this morning about senators being threatened by nutjobs angry over the bill. See-Dub will clue you in to the agenda behind the piece if you haven’t guessed already, but here’s your quote of the day from the man who once derided amnesty opponents as “bigots” before a crowd of swooning La Raza members:
“One of the requirements of public service in modern America is dealing with a few voices that are full of hate,” Mr. Graham said. “And our discourse and the way we politic, the way we engage each other, brings that out.”
It’s bringing something out: according to freshman Blue Dog Jon Tester, the feedback he’s getting from constituents is more overwhelmingly opposed on this issue than it is on Iraq, where public opposition currently hovers in the mid- to high-60s.
Updates will be flying fast and furious in an hour or so. I’ll do my best to liveblog the vote, although on Tuesday they didn’t repeat each senator’s vote after calling his/her name so it may not be possible. While you wait, read John Shadegg’s nightmare scenario at NRO about the various loopholes built into the bill that would let illegals caught while sneaking across the border nonetheless obtain legal status. Oh, and read this piece at Politico, which is comic in its adulation of Ted Kennedy even by normal media standards.
Humpbot waits in the wings, wondering if it’s his time to shine. Exit question: Pelosi and the gang deserve a pay raise, don’t you think?
Update: Here’s a no we weren’t counting on — Ensign has flipped. Don’t fear the reaper!
Update: They’re trying to flip Thad Cochran the other way now. If my vote tally last night was right, then we don’t need him.
Update: This must be one of those “voices of hate” Lindsey Graham was wringing his hands about. This debate was Godwinned weeks ago; might as well keep it up to the bitter end.
How many times does Teddy need to be told “close the borders first” before he grasps that that’s the alternative?
Update: Reid’s taken abuse, Bush has taken abuse, McCain and Graham and Kyl and Martinez have taken abuse enough for a lifetime, but one guy has stayed miraculously clean even though he’s sat idly by and let this sham take its course despite the uproar from his base and the pleas from Sessions et al. Save a little bile for him.
Update: How absurd has it gotten?
In case you didn’t catch this, the opponents of shamnesty are rushing through their statements because the Grand Schemers have only given them 10 minutes to speak. The shamnesty senators will get the rest of the hour to talk. “Typical,” says Session, of the way this debate has gone. And so starkly absurd. You’ve got the pro-amnesty senators on the floor now all bleating about how debate shouldn’t be ended…having just limited their opponents’ time to a measly 10 minutes.
Update: Here we go. Standby for liveblog totals.
First run-through is 19-21. Webb voted no! I think most of them deliberately haven’t voted yet, though, so that they can see what the first totals look like and then vote accordingly.
25-30 now! Humpbot is warming up…
31-38! TWO MORE.
I count fully 53 no’s. We did it.
Robot libido
Uploaded by sabo-tage
Update: Here’s the roll. Gonna go do the cross-check to see who switched.
Update: The yes/no switchers were Bingaman, Bond, Brown, Brownback, Burr, Coleman, Collins, Domenici, Ensign, Harkin, McConnell, Murkowski, Ben Nelson, Pryor, Stevens, Voinovich(!), Warner, and Webb. Republicans are in boldfaced. I guess you can thank Sean Hannity for shaming Voinovich into flipping.
It’s worth going back and looking at the order in which they voted, to see who held back and waited to gauge how the vote was going before casting his/her ballot. I’ll bet Mitch McConnell was one of them.
Update: Well, well. Brownback initially voted yes — and then switched to no when he realized he was going to lose. Disgraceful.

I’m going to send contributions to my two Senators this afternoon. Just a little thank-you for voting the right way.

I just saw this on Drudge:
Bush, making a last-ditch bid to salvage the bill, called senators early Thursday morning to urge their support. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez approached senators as they entered and left the chamber shortly before the vote.
What the heck? Does this just sound weird to anyone else, almost menacing?

Many thanks to the crew here, at Michelle’s site, at Ace’s site and everywhere else for keeping us informed, alert, and motivated during this fight.
This might be a kind of tipping point for the GOP. On the brink of its demise, those who sought to bring it down have only succeeded in awakening us, the sleeping giants. We are now motivated, hungry, and we know that our elected officials are listening to us. This was a big win, but let’s not stop here.
Power to the people. We can still shape this party to be what we want it to be.
World B. Free on June 28, 2007 at 12:39 PM
We CAN have the fence. Demand it. If whoever is running in your district/State doesn’t agree, don’t elect them.
Make it the issue that opens and closes your wallet.
There is a tremendous potential here for us to pull together a grassroots block of the aka Reid ‘Dark and Ugly’.
The problem is, and always has been, these bills that cover everything from milk production to B2 bombers. Demand a single issue bill. Build the fence, make a quota. Those candidates who support that get to play in your wallet. Those that don’t don’t.

Makes me sick when I hear them say our laws are unenforcible. I mean good gawd, this is the country that built the hoover dam, the empire state building, we put a man on the moon, we send space probes to mars - yet we can’t BUILD A FENCE? There is no excuse at all for our border to not be secure

The legal American people have spoken. It is comforting to see that this Republic is not lost, yet. It is however, disturbing to see the likes of Kennedy, Reid, Graham, etc. pontificate about how the “will” of the American people (whom they are to represent, lest we forget) is incorrect and destructive. To all of you who supported the rule of law, Thank You. But, please realize the firestorm will now begin. The liberal/self effacing elite will declare this the result of conservative talk media, conservative media, racism, ignorant scared Americansetc. . . We will need to stand strong again, and again. Pray that a “Leader” arises for the next election who listens to the legal American people and responds in kind. None of us are “hatefull” we just want the laws followed and our country secured. That really isn’t a hard concept to understand. What is hard to understand is that many of our elected can not understand it.
America, Americans, Thank you.

I’ve been lurking here (before this latest open sign-up) since the beginning and he strikes me as a 100% platform guy. If you don’t support Bush 100% on everything then you’re not a Real Conservative and don’t support the troops. What the hell one has to do with the other, I have no clue, since what the troops are fighting for is a sovereign nation, and without borders your nation isn’t sovereign (as has been said by many others on this site).
He reminds me of a guy I work with who, when this came up last time, basically regurgitated on and on the Administration’s position, and when I tried to argue the other point, turned his back to me saying, “Yeah, yeah. Go read something on the subject” and wouldn’t listen, until I asked him what he’ll do when his job becomes one that “Americans won’t do.”
tomas, if you’re that concerned about an alleged lack of support for the troops, do something to jump-start it. Don’t insult us.

“This was dangerously close to a government of the government, not the people” - shooter
is very important.
We may have reached a ctritical moment in the Republic. It isnt over.
Someone above asked if we should forgive or forget.
We should ask: can we trust them again?
Did these Senators change their votes for conscience or because of the enormous scream from America? I fear they did it for expedience but they have not changed their intents. They tried to sneak this in twice now. They have been relentless in ignoring us.
This does not bode well, nor does the intimidation squad at the Senate door.
Someone smart I know summed it up:
They are making citizenship and entitlement, not a privilege. This changes our country in ways we cannot recover from.
I am saying a prayer for the Nation of our Founders. It is under attack by a group who have no love for that original concept.
Thanks again everyone, in the spirit of 1776 and the men who were barefoot at Valley Forge. I hear the drums in the distance. Lexington, Concord, Bunker Hill and the Kings men who did not understand the anger

crazy_legs, if you never want to lose an argument about illegal immigration ask the person you are talking to what our laws should look like in regards to illegal immigration. Ask them, if you think our laws need to be reformed, what would you reform them into? They won’t be able to come up with anything different then what we currently have. At that point you can inform them that what they just recommended is that the solution to all our problems is to enforce the laws on the books. You can get into details all you want and go back and forth until you both turn blue in the face but nothing will effect them more then the realization that their recommendations are already the law of the land.

There are some issues that we all have opinions on, but we all agree that these issues are “non-essential, non-vital” for our country. We hold our opinions loosely in our left hand.
But then there are urgent and pressing issues that we all
have (or should have)convictions that are “essential and urgent” for our country. We hold these convictions firmly in our right hand.
Specter not only disagrees with us on our opinions, but also the key core convictions that we hold in our right hand.
Maybe all of us should have supported Rep. Pat Toomeya few years ago.
Opinions are one thing. All of us revise occasionally our opinions. But convictions, our “core essentials”, we hold firmly and stand our ground on, no matter what.
If we cannot even agree on the “essentials”, then why have you in our party?

As an American with a Legal immigrant spouse, I feel that there’s hope now. This issue was lasting way too long. It would have been a hard blow to all those who followed the very restrictive (for a reason) steps to be awarded the Resident status, plus fees, lines, and an awful lot of time, be able to pass a background check and prove your honorability. Thanks.
mile66 on June 28, 2007 at 1:07 PM
The issues of racism and ignorance that were raised were themselves racist and ignorant. I am not against the orderly legal entry of immigrants. The Mexican populous in particular due to their close geographic proximity are the obvious majority of this group. We need a comprehensive bill that would include the proper waiting time for background checks along with the implementation of citizenship classes and an OATH swearing allegiance to the good old USA as was the procedure in the past. If the exodus is slowed for the purpose of assimulation then I would be agreeable to the entry of the Mexicans. The mass exodus we now are experiencing not only is a blantant disregard of the soveriengty and laws of the US but threatens to overwrite the English langaage. This exodus also lowers our living standards. We do not poop outside. It also weakens the resolve of the law enforcement community, by giving a pass to lawbreakers.

What was frustrating when I was debating that co-worker is that’s exactly what I did. And that was the point that he turned his back on me and started saying “Oh Kayyyyy, Oh Kayyyyyy.” (I can’t get his tone down here in text, but let me just say it was completely arrogant). He totally dismissed the laws I was bringing up and said that nothing could be enforced without amnesty (of course, he didn’t call it amnesty. He also dropped the ol’ can’t deport 12mil card). That’s when I threw out “What will you do when your job is one that Americans won’t do.” Stopped him dead in his tracks. I’ve used that one a few more times since then on other people and it really does bring things to a screaching halt.

Do you all write to your reps like you have on this issue…I don’t remember this many posts for any other issue period. You say you are doing this and that well do more…you aren’t doing what you did on this bill…get that through your thick skulls.

It is important to remember that in 2006 Kyl ran on a “border enforcement” theme, and he won in a year in which the GOP suffered losses. Kyl won BECAUSE of folks like us.
Now, he is breaking his promises.
Remember, border enforcement, for Kyl, means “passing amnesty legislation and, in return, pay lip service to border enforcement by talking about MERE 350 mile fence.”
The border is longer than 350 miles!! What about Visa over-stays?
We need to take action. We need to develop a website, pool our resources, and find a primary challenge for Kyl. But first, we have 2 other priorities:
Lindsey Graham, Republican from South Carolina.
And we need to fund and support Jon Bruning against RHINO Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.
Let’s go RHINO hunting.
1.

Drudge links to The Hill quoting Graham as follows:
Why, exactly, can’t a future bill be better? Is Graham banking on Democrats winning larger majorities in the next election? Nothing would have guaranteed that better than Republicans supporting this POS bill.
Why not, I don’t know, go back to conservative values, the type which win with the public, and then, dream with me, WIN BACK THE FUCKING CONGRESS so that a better, genuinely conservative approach can be tried?

There are many on this board that have done more than write of our support for the troops or GWOT-some have actually put our money where our mouth is and served in the current conflict.
That said, would you be kind enough to close your pie hole and stop trying to infect us with your jack8assery?
Trooper on June 28, 2007 at 1:22 PM
tomas, to be cursed by you is an absolute honor!
Troops, I love you and I support you with all my heart, will, rationale, soul, and above all my freedom, which you protect, and for which I’ll be eternally grateful. You also protect the other half of the country and the misguided ones like tomas. For that and 1001 other reasons you are our heroes, and so much superior to all of us!!!
OT - all - please get off that single-threded horse or mantra of “build the fence”. The number one issue is the super-magnet - employers who hire illegal skilled and unskilled labor. Yes, the fence is important, or the protection of the border by any means. However, until this law of punishing employers is not put into effect, no means, and no fence will stopp this invasion. Which bring up another point. Please quit calling it anything but an invasion. As the media and politicians establish ‘talking points’ so can we. And we are better at it, and see how effective!
I’m so happy this is happening now, all of it: the liberal congress, the conservative near-divorce, the soul-searching for what really matters. If we don’t follow our laws and our principles, what are we teaching the rotw? Drink the water while we get stupefied on wine?

Yeah, let’s go RINO hunting! That wuss Grahamnesty has GOT to go.
And let’s make sure the people know it was the DEMOCRATS Dingy Harry & Ted the Snorkel who spearheaded this monstrosity.
They’re gonna try to say it was a Republican bill, but it was bipartisan, and the libs deserve a fair share of the blame. This bill would never had made it to the floor if it wasn’t for Harry Reid and the Dems.

Hey guys, I just thought about something. I wonder what Geraldo is thinking? Do you think he busted a tear? I might try to catch FOX tonight to see if he shows up. If not I will tivo his show this weekend. I am sure he is crushed.

I will go away when I feel that you all are putting forth the same effort which you are either drunk or stupid or lying to say your are in totality. Don’t treat me like the senators who dismissed you. Admit you are wrong and be a part of the surge.

Now would be a great time to start faxing the following to the President and both houses:
Build the fence now!

Can we use our people power now to squeeze Lott out of his leadership role now?
