We’re prepared for any contingency. Victory means a Humpbot cameo; defeat means I get tanked on hard liquor in the middle of the day. It’s win/win, really. The boss has already done a quickie round-up of stories this morning predicting the bill’s demise. John Hawkins’s Senate source lends his voice to the chorus:
To begin with, my source said he is guardedly optimistic that the bill will fail the 2nd cloture vote tomorrow. That is because he thinks that some of the senators who voted for cloture on Tuesday were doing so because they were being “senatorial” by allowing a debate. But, that only goes so far, and everyone realizes at this point that the Thursday vote is the final vote on amnesty as far as the base is concerned. In other words, a “yes” on cloture is a “yes” to amnesty.
At that point, I asked about the “fool the yahoos” maneuver. Will there be senators voting “yes” on cloture and then voting against the final bill and hoping that they can avoid being tagged as supporting amnesty? He said that because of all the attention this issue has gotten, the base isn’t going to be fooled and that anyone who does that will just have to hope that his election isn’t close enough that thousands conservatives sitting at home can swing it the other way.
McCain’s Iowa campaign chairman told WaPo yesterday he wished the issue of immigration had never come to the floor. As for St. John’s crony-in-chief, he’s featured prominently in the Times’s story this morning about senators being threatened by nutjobs angry over the bill. See-Dub will clue you in to the agenda behind the piece if you haven’t guessed already, but here’s your quote of the day from the man who once derided amnesty opponents as “bigots” before a crowd of swooning La Raza members:
“One of the requirements of public service in modern America is dealing with a few voices that are full of hate,” Mr. Graham said. “And our discourse and the way we politic, the way we engage each other, brings that out.”
It’s bringing something out: according to freshman Blue Dog Jon Tester, the feedback he’s getting from constituents is more overwhelmingly opposed on this issue than it is on Iraq, where public opposition currently hovers in the mid- to high-60s.
Updates will be flying fast and furious in an hour or so. I’ll do my best to liveblog the vote, although on Tuesday they didn’t repeat each senator’s vote after calling his/her name so it may not be possible. While you wait, read John Shadegg’s nightmare scenario at NRO about the various loopholes built into the bill that would let illegals caught while sneaking across the border nonetheless obtain legal status. Oh, and read this piece at Politico, which is comic in its adulation of Ted Kennedy even by normal media standards.
Humpbot waits in the wings, wondering if it’s his time to shine. Exit question: Pelosi and the gang deserve a pay raise, don’t you think?
Update: Here’s a no we weren’t counting on — Ensign has flipped. Don’t fear the reaper!
Update: They’re trying to flip Thad Cochran the other way now. If my vote tally last night was right, then we don’t need him.
Update: This must be one of those “voices of hate” Lindsey Graham was wringing his hands about. This debate was Godwinned weeks ago; might as well keep it up to the bitter end.
How many times does Teddy need to be told “close the borders first” before he grasps that that’s the alternative?
Update: Reid’s taken abuse, Bush has taken abuse, McCain and Graham and Kyl and Martinez have taken abuse enough for a lifetime, but one guy has stayed miraculously clean even though he’s sat idly by and let this sham take its course despite the uproar from his base and the pleas from Sessions et al. Save a little bile for him.
Update: How absurd has it gotten?
In case you didn’t catch this, the opponents of shamnesty are rushing through their statements because the Grand Schemers have only given them 10 minutes to speak. The shamnesty senators will get the rest of the hour to talk. “Typical,” says Session, of the way this debate has gone. And so starkly absurd. You’ve got the pro-amnesty senators on the floor now all bleating about how debate shouldn’t be ended…having just limited their opponents’ time to a measly 10 minutes.
Update: Here we go. Standby for liveblog totals.
First run-through is 19-21. Webb voted no! I think most of them deliberately haven’t voted yet, though, so that they can see what the first totals look like and then vote accordingly.
25-30 now! Humpbot is warming up…
31-38! TWO MORE.
I count fully 53 no’s. We did it.
Robot libido
Uploaded by sabo-tage
Update: Here’s the roll. Gonna go do the cross-check to see who switched.
Update: The yes/no switchers were Bingaman, Bond, Brown, Brownback, Burr, Coleman, Collins, Domenici, Ensign, Harkin, McConnell, Murkowski, Ben Nelson, Pryor, Stevens, Voinovich(!), Warner, and Webb. Republicans are in boldfaced. I guess you can thank Sean Hannity for shaming Voinovich into flipping.
It’s worth going back and looking at the order in which they voted, to see who held back and waited to gauge how the vote was going before casting his/her ballot. I’ll bet Mitch McConnell was one of them.
Update: Well, well. Brownback initially voted yes — and then switched to no when he realized he was going to lose. Disgraceful.

1) How do you define kicking ass…AND…ending this war…
2) What exactly is the Palestinian/Israel problem?
doriangrey on June 28, 2007 at 3:33 PM
Though you’d never ask. Well rhetorically speaking of course kicking ass is what we did here. When the antiwar Dems are limiting the number of boots on the groung and cutting of funding we have a problem. We need a double surge to beat back Iran and AQ and other foreign fighters to create stability in Iraq. We did impose Military Law in Japan for a long time, we need to impose a curfue and eliminate vehicular traffic in high risk areas. The US should not worry about the name calling as occupiers or imperialists. It is what it is. We have to step up and lead the new government. We bought and paid for it. With regards to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. The fight over the land needs to be settled. Hammer out an agreement set the rules if you have to . The UN needs to be charged with overseeing this. We cut off the US funding to the UN. We stop our own hard work and money being used against us in the name of humanitarianism.

Now if only the GOP could take back by old homeland of PA. I would be happy.
I moved because the liberalism in PA forced 18% unemployment in my hometown. Liberalism killed my town and forced me to move to the South.
So I do know something about why poor people move. The giant outflow from the North is a great example. Those that have moved have made the South a solid GOP land. They have abandoned liberalism in mass. The hispanics will do the same.

Sonny,
There cultural presuppositions of post-WWII Japan and Islamic Iraq are quite a bit different. The only way to stabilize that place is to shell it enough so the Iraqis learn not to mess, or to get them to abandon Islam.

So what would be different for Hispanics? They go to inner city schools. They have assimilations issues including unwillingness to learn English, etc., etc. I mean, you just made my point completely.
Well, I don’t want to go back to 1900 to find any sense of hope for the future. We actually had a process then. people were encouraged to assimilate, etc. So, things are very different today, but I can tell you, that wave of immigration turned the Northeast into permanently Blue territory just as the current wave is turning the West into permanent Blue territory.
The idea is to control immigration and spread it around to prevent balkanization like is happening today.
Education does not turn poor people into Republicans. Sorry. It just isn’t so and history proves it. Poor people vote their pocketbooks. Especially when they are beholden to a party that caters to them by providing government benefits and patronage jobs.
TheBigOldDog on June 28, 2007 at 4:29 PM
And so it is! I should know better.
IrishEi on June 28, 2007 at 4:29 PM
Absolutely correct. This is not a “Hispanic problem.” This is “not a Mexico problem.” This is a NATIONAL SECURITY problem.
Anyone, from every conceivable country, who over-stays a tourist or travel visa contributes to the problem of national security. Granted, Mexico may be a big violator. But this national security problem goes far beyond that of one single country like Mexico.
By the way, after Mexico, what country is the second-biggest violator?
But the above information does not take into consideration visa or tourist over-stays.
It is a very serious national security threat when foreigners over-stay their travel visas.
And to reward them with USA citizenship as a gift is wrong.

Yep the only true way to win a war is to pound the place so god damn hard that anyone willing to fight is either killed or realizes that picking up a weapon means that they are going to die. Anyone who thinks you can win a war any other way is a complete imbecile.
Wars are horrible things that should never be entered into lightly, if you don’t have the stomach to do what it takes to win you need to surrender before the fighting even starts.

Citizenship – At the Core of the Issue
Children of illegal aliens, often called “anchor babies” are automatically assumed to be citizens of the United States simply because they were born here. The 14th amendment that supposedly grants this right was passed in 1868 to apply to the children of slaves. Rightfully so. But, Anchor Babies are not children of slaves. They are children of people who willingly and illegally cross into the United States for economic gains.
With our momentum, NOW is the time to amend the Constitution so that we can clarify this issue and DENY CITIZENSHIP to those born to ILLEGAL ALIENS and/or, obtain judicial ruling to that effect.

doriangrey on June 28, 2007 at 4:44 PM
You make some excellent statements, the one that I would expand on is this one.
The blacks have not assimilated, not because of history, but because of the liberal suppression of minorities. The liberals have controlled education for several decades, and have controlled major city education for over 40 years. They have been the overseers of a decline of minority (read black) education. It is to their best interest to keep the blacks poor and on the plantation. Blaming, of course, the conservatives. The liberal professors do not help, having 80% of University profs. voting liberal and supporting this suppression. The minorities who have shunned the liberal stereotypes (Asians as an example, or Armenians, etc.)have greatly exceeded blacks and hispanics in their “upward” movement (socially, economically, family value, etc.). People like Rice or Sowell, who are so well educated are held up as “sellouts” or “oreos” or whatever attack that will demean their advancement. Further hammering in the theme that Education=Bigot, or sellout. Black leaders, especially the uneducated, point haplessley at successful, educated blacks and denounce them. To them it is better being poor, fatherless, ignorant, hungary, addicted and a democrat, than be a successful, intelligent, valued, Republican.
What is my proof? Go back to my original statement…who has been in control of education for the past 40 years, liberals or conservatives. Where the foundation of society is formally taught.
BTW, during the 20’s and 30’s, during the depression and terrible laws against the blacks (from the democrats, home of the KKK), the blacks had families, low crime rate, and they were poor. Poor does not mean poor values or high crime rate.

TheBigOldDog on June 28, 2007 at 4:29 PM
All good points and all correct to some degree. Education in this country is a problem and we will have to deal with that. The children today are not being educated they are being indoctrniated.
That being said. Education lifts the poor from poverty. Once people start paying taxes and working then their voting patterns change. The poor vote their pocketbooks. But will they be poor in the next generation or the next. Only if they remain uneducated. We must ensure they do not remain that way.
The influx of immigration in the 1900’s did not change the North into democratic land. Only since the late 1980’s has the trend to all blue been going on. At the same time as this has happend the South has turned solid RED. Both are a function of internal immigration.

Very good points all. When I mention history this is kind of what I was thinking. It was due to the history of this country that black leaders and teachers can keep the lies going on to keep the black population poor and uneducation. If not for the history of slavery/jim crow laws etc the black population would be more open to other points of view.
It is the same with labor unions and owners. If not for the history of the sameful way workers were treated in this country (and still are in many parts of the world) the blue collar workers would be more open to the ideas of free markets, stock ownership, fianical education. History plays roles in our lives at all levels.

One thing we all can do (I think to great effect), is put pressure on our local govts.
Fight Sanctuary cities, fight “don’t ask legality” policies; our state senators and reps have to get re-elected too. If we push enforcement, if we push fining employers who hire illegals in accordance with Federal Law, it will break the cycle. Illegals will leave; employers won’t hire them.
Limerick – good point about the Superhighway. When did that get passed? How far along is it? Any movement to stop it?
crazy_legs – welcome!
tomas – as others have said earlier, we do support the troops. Call about what? The GWOT is a long and involved process and all of us I am sure do what we can; donate, go to marches, go to Sean’s concerts and support the children of dead warriors, etc etc. There is no legislation to stop, there is no legislation to promote. This was something that needed immediate action. The Dems threatened to cut off funding and couldn’t do it, remember?
As I saw a soldier post somewhere, “I’m wondering, if this bill passes, what kind of America I will be going home to”.
Gonna buy some champagne tonight; we live to fight another day. Watch for the Fairness Doctrine to be whipped out as punishment.

The other big difference I failed to mention is that the prior waves of immigration happened before the creation of the welfare state. The welfare state ensures waves of new immigrants will never follow the pattern of previous waves.
The Left has tried everything to keep the Latinos from integrating including ESL mandates. the Democrats want the voters and the Republicans want the cheap labor. What the Republican morons fail to realize is, the minute they become legal they won’t be doing those jobs anymore and the Democrats will make sure of it. The only reason they do it now is they have no choice.
I’ve lived in Boston for 42 years – it’s been bluer than blue the entire time. You can trace the rise of Irish Democratic machine politics all the way back to Tameny Hall.

Just caught Reid’s little speech on FOX with Kennedy standing behind. Was Teddy getting ready to cry or throw up, I couldn’t tell.

Ok, I should have checked.. there were a couple “rosie” comments after all.. LOL
RobertCSampson on June 28, 2007 at 5:26 PM
For us to be able to fairly assess that, I think we’re going to need to see video. Just let me get some dollar bills first.

The welfare state ensures waves of new immigrants will never follow the pattern of previous waves.
TheBigOldDog on June 28, 2007 at 5:21 PM
In this I agree 100% with you. But my point is that through education we can change this. It is not a hispanic culture it is a lack of education in civics/fianical/history that causes liberalism to stay alive.
the Republicans want the cheap labor.
and this is the problem. No matter what path to citizenship the GOP gives to the hispanics as long as they are using them for cheap labor they will never become REPs.
the GOP must turn away from unrestrained greed and turn back to the concept of ALL men are created equal. This is what Lincoln believed. Some greed is good/profit is good but profit at expense of your fellow man is not. Reagan understood that. Bush and the GOP majority pre 2006 did not.

Over 1,000 comments! Congrats HA!

Haha, well you won’t have to worry about giving up the bills since, again, it was quite ridiculous. I closed the door and did a spin-around, finger-pointing dance known for its presence at elementary school dances…

BTW, this 1000+ comment article does mean AP gets the iPhone?? Eh, Michelle??

Which leads to; are there any repercussions against government officials for not enforcing certain laws. This must fit under the equal protection clause, right?

Didn’t they take an oath to defend and uphold the Consisution of the United States? But then filing a civil suit against them for breaking their oath problably won’t get anywhere…..
And I don’t think the Hispanics will vote against the GOP just because of this (just the illegal alien voters). They often understand what open boarders mean.
CrazyFool on June 28, 2007 at 5:49 PM
Heck, if this keeps up, MM might owe us all iPhones :) The most impressive thread ever!

But you’re taking it on pure faith. That’s an experiment we can’t afford to even try.
Careful. Early on Lincoln supported the removal of all blacks from the country and colonizing them in Liberia and only abandoned the idea after using black troops in the war.
fwiw, Bush’s motives are pure I think. There was a great article in the SNYT that pretty much describes where he’s coming from on this. As predicted by Dennis Miller and Mark Styn, it comes down to noblesse oblige.

But you’re taking it on pure faith
TheBigOldDog on June 28, 2007 at 5:55 PM
No I am not taking it on pure faith. I am glad this immigration bill was shot down because it would not have done anything but make a bad problem worse.
The experiment is happening now as we speak. So far the liberals are winning because we have withdrawn from the fight in education due to PC run amuck. When we bring up civics and assimilation we are called bigots.
We must use education to promote and extend our cause.
Case in point the MSM refers to the conservative fraction as the right wing of the party this is false. Conservatives are about 80% of the country. The right wing of our party are the ones that want the cheap labor or the CEO wing.
The country is not split 50/50. We have about 10% of our Right wing fighting about 10% of the Dems left wing. A total free market is about as stupid as a total socialistic state. Each taken to its end state brings tyranny. The trick is to have the lest amount of governmental regulation to preserve freedom and prosperity, while at the same time ensuring the human rights of ALL men. The constitution threads this needle.
We have left the MSM define us as the Right wing, we are not. Education can go along way to chance these lies. If we educate on capitalism with regards to freedom like Reagan did we win every time.

Wow! This thread is ginormous. Anyway, congrats to all who helped sink this awful piece of legislation.
thedecider on June 28, 2007 at 6:20 PM
Federalism is the srtongest antidote for both types of tyranny. The closer we get to the people the less likely we are to have major corparations polluting our streams, lakes etc, the less likely we are to have beggers living off the taxpayers, the less likely we are to have corruption, and the less likely we are to have inhuman working conditions.
It is since the advent of the huge federal system that we have lost freedoms from both the liberals and the CEO’s.
Thomas Paine’s common sense is one of the best books written on the subject IMO

I don’t think the article is right.
I see the GOP as the pro-American party with some rich Rodney Dangerfield uncles that we don’t really like to be seen with and we don’t really want to go visit. But since they have the money we have to visit to not get left out of their wills. Bush is one of those Uncles.
