Video: Silky shatters world record for irony on “Hardball”

posted at 7:57 pm on June 27, 2007 by Allahpundit

Here’s the nutroots’ preferred candidate, whose wife maintains a diary at Markos “Screw Them” Zuniga’s site, overflowing with heart-ache at the hateful, vitriolic rhetoric that “debases [America's] politics.” I have to lie down.

I removed the specific references to Coulter for added contextual absurdity.

lol.

Why didn’t Edwards object to Chris leading the witness? Oh, because that was the whole idea… Did Edwards just equate himself with sufferers pre-Civil Rights era? Wow, he’s on his way to earning my sympathy vote. /sarc

God, he looks bad. Maybe it’s the lighting but he looks like he just got a $100 dollar haircut.

Hardball? There are no balls of any kind on display anywhere in that clip.

i think his sideburns are cut unevenly.

mimi1220 on June 27, 2007 at 8:05 PM

This Edwards-Coulter catfight only reveals who wears the pants in the Edwards’ household… not the one with $400 haircuts to be sure! I feel compassion toward Mrs. Edwards for her brave battle against cancer but before she advises a political pundit on language, perhaps she should speak to her husband about the language he used to put all those doctors out of business with lawsuits. New record for irony indeed! Can someone tell me why Chris Matthews is afraid to address Ann directly and instead uses Mrs. Edwards for his public battles? Ratings that bad?

IntheNet on June 27, 2007 at 8:05 PM

Dusty on June 27, 2007 at 8:04 PM

That was awesome.

Spirit of 1776 on June 27, 2007 at 8:06 PM

Uh-oh. Looks Edwards looks angry. He might unleash the Care Bear Stare.

That the people at Kos actually fall for this crap kinda betrays the idea they have any political acumen. They’re just a bunch of yiping Chihuahuas barking at anything that moves and making friends with whoever will hand them treats.

frankj on June 27, 2007 at 8:06 PM

Edwards always sounds like Elmer Fudd to me.

And he’s got some freaky-deaky eyebrows.

And the dude just obliquely compared Ann Coulter to the KKK. He almost Godwin’d himself.

Mindcrime on June 27, 2007 at 8:07 PM

Nice job AP with the edit job and contextual ambiguity. I am going to assume that Silky was talking about his wife’s actions……..

Damian G. on June 27, 2007 at 8:11 PM

I think Matthews must have just read the Newsweek story By Sharon Begley, about Dems being more “rational”, that Allahpundit posted below. He seems to have formulated his his faulty leading questions from the same premise.

Resolute on June 27, 2007 at 8:11 PM

He’s a douche. Him lecturing anyone on having no shame is like Rosie lecturing someone on having sex with a man!

SouthernGent on June 27, 2007 at 8:12 PM

Did Edwards just equate himself with sufferers pre-Civil Rights era?

And the dude just obliquely compared Ann Coulter to the KKK.

I think his fan base would probably be less sympathetic if he equated himself with persecuted Jews.

Edwards would actually get some respect if he DROPPED out of the race to care for his wife. Campaigns come and go but his wife should be more precious to him.

Mojave Mark on June 27, 2007 at 8:16 PM

Edwards would actually get some respect if he DROPPED out of the race to care for his wife. Campaigns come and go but his wife should be more precious to him.

I would say “Sadly, since his wife’s cancer came back she’s become nothing more than political capital for him.”

But I can’t use the “Sadly” part since she’s pretty much going along with it. That much was obvious when she called into Hardball yesterday to play the “absolute moral authority card”.

Mindcrime on June 27, 2007 at 8:18 PM

I’m no fan of Ann- she’s the right’s version of Michael Moore- but how is what she said any worse than anything written every hour by any of Kos or Huffington’s diarists? This is just a ploy to get more $, sympathy and publicity for this empty-suited, focus group-formed, smarmy trial lawyer.

The Sinner on June 27, 2007 at 8:19 PM

A guy who had Amanda “hot, white, sticky” Marcotte on his payroll is now lecturing us on the debasement of political discourse? Oh puh-LEEZE!

Insomniac on June 27, 2007 at 8:22 PM

i think his wife cancer announcement is part of the campaign, absolute moral authority to give cover to all the stupidity the campaign is based on.

Message to Edwards:

Focus on your hair because at least you can manage that.

Stop crying and then go sue somebody. You’re still third in your poll and just because you make and easy target of some media crazed right winger doesn’t mean that you’re fit for the most powerful position in the world. Stand down soldier and listen for that knock on your door from the Clintonistas. “I think you here them (her) knocking and I think they are coming in.”

Edwards is talking about Amanda Marcotte, right? The woman he refused to fire. And sending a sick wife out to speak for him (there is no WAY he didn’t know about her call beforehand). What a **** (insert satisfyingly graphic insult here).

I’m no fan of Ann- she’s the right’s version of Michael Moore-

I think this is the first time I have ever commented on Ann on HA. And I’m breaking radio silence to say she is NOT like Michael Moore. She may be hyperbolic, and her ‘humor’ sometimes has a very hard edge from what I expect is overflowing disgust from her Clinton-lawyer days, but she is not a socialist who purposely propagandizes fraudulent premises.

Nothing Ann does can be compared to the twisting and blatant dishonesty that goes on in Moore’s films.

apostle26 on June 27, 2007 at 8:45 PM

Here is the part about her son that Mrs. Edwards was made about.

Edwards has talked about his son’s death in a 1996 car accident on “Good Morning America,” in dozens of profiles and in his new book. (“It was and is the most important fact of my life.”) His 1998 Senate campaign ads featured film footage of Edwards at a learning lab he founded in honor of his son, titled “The Wade Edwards Learning Lab.” He wears his son’s Outward Bound pin on his suit lapel. He was going to wear it on his sleeve, until someone suggested that might be a little too “on the nose.”

If you want points for not using your son’s death politically, don’t you have to take down all those “Ask me about my son’s death in a horrific car accident” bumper stickers? Edwards is like a politician who keeps announcing that he will not use his opponent’s criminal record for partisan political advantage. I absolutely refuse to mention the name of my dearly beloved and recently departed son killed horribly in a car accident, which affected me deeply, to score cheap political points.

wryteacher on June 27, 2007 at 8:46 PM

Why is he bringing up his short term bloggers history for? Uh that is who he is talking about right?

LakeRuins on June 27, 2007 at 8:49 PM

Insomnia nailed it.

Two words: Amanda Marcotte.

Anything else Edwards say on the issue should be met with those two words.

nailinmyeye on June 27, 2007 at 8:52 PM

This smarmy, slinkmyster, and absolute fraud, hides behind his wife’s skirts to call out, so to speak, Ann. He is a sleeze ball of crap, a simple minded POS who thinks the American public is about to embrace him and his overweight wife and send them to the highest office in the land. HE IS WRONG, DEAD WRONG!!!

NEMETI IN SYRACUSE on June 27, 2007 at 8:54 PM

I tell you Edwards will use his wife’s cancer, the death of his son, and whatever else of personal emotional quality to get elected. A normal person would give it up to care for his wife. Not him. He’s got enough money to buy a caregiver when his wife needs it. He will aim to garner the sympathy vote. Watch for demands for more government money for cancer research.

Qzsusy on June 27, 2007 at 8:56 PM

Skirt hiding pandering idiot. Edwards should say that on Fox, with AC there to debate him, rather than his wife taking the swings.

I would say go back to chasing ambulances, but that’s what he does best. And channeling dead little girls.

Kini on June 27, 2007 at 9:00 PM

NEMETI IN SYRACUSE on June 27, 2007 at 8:54 PM

Yeah, and it’s crazy politically too, imo. I mean if you want to lead, you can only lead at the level that you are willing to replace the current leadership. So Edwards so far has shown his willingness to be a top level political pundit at best. Compared to say, Rudy (not endorsing just for comparison) who is already trying to craft his message juxtaposed to Dem’s party ideas. They aren’t even competing on the same plane. He is a complete non issue in the election I think.

Spirit of 1776 on June 27, 2007 at 9:01 PM

This is getting better than SNL.

Griz on June 27, 2007 at 9:02 PM

He also completely sided stepped the question about his campaign exploding the death of their son…..which by the way is exactly what Elizabeth Edwards did when she confronted Coulter about this on MSNBC. If they really had a problem with what she was saying why wouldn’t she sit down with her in private to ask her to stop???????????

Equivalent to Michael Moore? So Ann has made several movies based on lies? She has gone to a communist country and compared their pathetic health system to ours? She ran around stating for years that she could never get an interview, all the while she had that interview but never published it? What book or movie did she makes numerous misquotes, quotes made in one place or year and attributed it to another? I missed those Ann movies. What reporter has she not gone toe to toe with to publicly defend her statements and beliefs?

I think you better listen and read what she said in context. Here’s a hint…don’t believe Matthews. Do a little reading before posting such a ridiculous statement.

right2bright on June 27, 2007 at 9:11 PM

the irony is that no one watches this awful show, My Pretty Pony seems to not understand this.

Matthews is talking to a camera and the decayed remains of the Charles Grodin show audience.

But just by reading this thread, I feel that there is someone out there fighting for me and my way of life, even if it is not quite as large, grand, pampered, comfortable as John and Liz’s.

benrand on June 27, 2007 at 9:11 PM

Here it is so you don’t even have to leave the thread to take right2bright up on that worthy suggestion: What did Coulter say?

Spirit of 1776 on June 27, 2007 at 9:14 PM

Wow lotsa strong defenders for Ann! But face it people, Ann is no better than Michael Moore, Rosie O’Donnell, Joy Behar or the rest of that ilk. She lies (“The war in Iraq is going fabulously!”) and says stupid outrageous comments (“Al Gore: total fag!) for attention and to make money. How is that any different than the turds on the left?

The Sinner on June 27, 2007 at 9:18 PM

Not defending Ann; she doesn’t need it. I just prefer intellectual honesty.

Spirit of 1776 on June 27, 2007 at 9:25 PM

Silky is good at that “hurt-little-puppy-dog-victim” look.

Good God, can you imagine a POTUS resorting to that tactic on the world stage? Contrast that to how Reagan carried himself. If the world doesn’t like us now at least they still have some respect for us. That would evaporate the moment this crybaby was elected (God forbid).

infidel4life on June 27, 2007 at 9:35 PM

VolMagic on June 27, 2007 at 10:40 PM

I don’t get the Michael Moore comparison. I hear this over and over, but I just don’t get the connection. There’s a difference between saying truth in a controversial way and completely fabricating something. While I might not agree with how Ann says something, I have a hard time finding where I differ in principle or thought.

simon on June 27, 2007 at 10:40 PM

The Sinner

Sinner. What you quoted as Ann Coulter’s, “lie,” is called an opinion. Then you accuse Coulter of being a flamethrower and proceed to engage in your own personal attacks.

Trying to one-up Edwards for irony there, sinner?

You don’t like Ann Coulter? So what? You’re entitled to your opinion about Coulter…but so are all the others here.

My opinion about Coulter is that she is nothing like the big-mouthed, liar Michael Moore, or Rosie, “Truther,” O’Donnell. She is intelligent and she bugs the heck out of liberals like Mikey and Rosie who are too stupid to back up their viewpoints, so they have to distort what conservatives say.

The TRUTH is that liberals can’t stand her, and they look for ANY opportunity to paint her in the light you’re trying to paint her in. It isn’t working with me. They had to distort what Ann said and claim that she meant something else in order to paint her, “the bad guy,” so they can solicit campaign funds?

That’s dishonesty in the extreme. Edwards is a hypocritical wimp.

JannyMae on June 28, 2007 at 1:54 AM

Poor Mr. Edwards! He’s just out there trying hard, stooping down to help poor people and to share his Marxist vision for the country while acquiring more power and wealth for himself, and now he has to put up with a little name calling from the likes of Ann Coulter! It’s just not fair!

JellyToast on June 28, 2007 at 8:21 AM

Silky’s youth is worrisome in that he potentially has several presidential campaigns ahead of him, but I really can’t believe that American citizens will ever elect a “man” who sits down to pee.
Ann can at times be over the top, but you cannot deny she obliterates PC customs and the polite desire to not hurt feelings to make points that are absolutely true. Besides, she is funny as hell.
T the guy who claims Ann lies by claiming the war goes well, it’s all a matter of perspective. Conservative: Tens of thousands of dead terrorists, excellent job. Liberal: War is too messy, surrender and appeasement is nice and neat.
Since when did the definition of winning in war time change from “Continuously kicking the shit out of your enemy” to “It’s not ending quickly enough for my delicate sensibilites”? Lack of resolve on the part of some is not losing.

Alamo on June 28, 2007 at 8:39 AM

My latest conspiracy theory, entitled “me thinketh he protesteth too much”: Silky secretly hearts Ann Coulter, and the little wife knows it, so she calls into a national show to get all over her and start a chick fight and makes Silky to publicly disavow any feelings he has for her pretty hair.

Either that or he is just jealous of her Suave gel.

Numenorean on June 28, 2007 at 12:29 PM

“It’s been true as long as I’ve been alive, and it’s true today.” So…. He’s no longer alive?

What about the fact that she wasn’t the first one to say this about a person? Bill Maher said it about our Vice President, and no one said a word. BUT, when a conservative says it about a liberal, then Satan has come to breakfast!

And I wonder if he–growing up in the south–ever said mean and hurtful things about the “good people”? And why can’t he just call the “good people” what they are? “Americans!”

Al in St. Lou on June 28, 2007 at 2:36 PM

The Sinner,

To take a milder approach: Ann Coulter regularly employs hyperbole and shock value to register her points. But her points are based on facts and reality. If they were not, the left and right would both have thrashed her long ago.

Some on the right don’t like her because ‘our side should be above that style’, and while I’m not in disagreement with that sentiment, I differ on thinking she really descends as low as some bemoan.

There is no valid comparison to Moore, or O’Donnell, or even Olbermann. John Daily is probably the closest analog to Coulter on the left. Maybe Carville, though he is prone to scramble facts pretty good himself.

Yep, she’s outrageous, but she doesn’t fabricate her stories.
