Silky’s wife pleads: The way to stop Coulter is by giving us money Updated

posted at 2:46 pm on June 27, 2007 by Allahpundit

Goldstein’s got the text. You can add this pathetic manufactured controversy to the big A’s long list of easy predictions that were bound to come true, per my post on Monday about Silky’s penchant for finding himself attacked by the forces of evil whenever he needs a cash influx. He’s still almost a million and a half short of his target with three days to go but no doubt his mouth-breathing nutroots base will dig deep to throw a little water on the wicked witch of the right. I bet he makes it.

Meanwhile, there seems to be some debate as to why Mrs. Edwards would have called in to confront Coulter instead of the Pony himself. Really? People don’t see why a mom who’s suffering from cancer might be a more disarming opponent in a debate than a guy known mainly for the price of his haircut? The real mystery is why Coulter sat there dumbly instead of pointing to the tactic as a picture perfect example of her pet thesis.

Do note the reference in Edwards’s e-mail, too, about raising the discourse to set an example for the children. Fine words from a dKos diarist.

Update (bp): Silky is set to be on Hardball tonight. What do you want to bet last night’s confrontation with Coulter was a set-up, first to play the sympathy card and next to get Silky the free advertising, I mean airtime? Of course it was. Hardball is acting as Silky’s press agent on this, setting up the fight, then setting up the reaction, everybody wins–Silky gets his sympathy and thereby his fundraising pitch, AC gets some airtime, Hardball gets to be the stage manager. What a crock.

Anyone want to lay odds on whether Ann Coulter will be allowed to call in and nip at Silky the way Mrs. Edwards was allowed to do to AC last night?

Ann called it. She’s on their homepage raising them money too.

Orange Man on June 27, 2007 at 2:51 PM

OK, but it’s a catch-22: If you stop Coulter, she won’t be saying anything you can use to get more money…

db on June 27, 2007 at 2:52 PM

i say keep going ann. let them throw away their money

pmoshields on June 27, 2007 at 2:53 PM

Allah, I bet he doesn’t make that fundraising goal!

He’s such a shameless tool, its so funny.

Bad Candy on June 27, 2007 at 2:53 PM

By the way Allah, did you even watch the exchange? I would hardly characterize her as “sitting there dumbly.” She got in some good points and made some digs. I am actually pretty impressed considering the way they blindsided her. I also loved the fact that CM is so upset that she had a number of supporters in the crowd. I can’t see how anybody can watch what happened there and not see it as a complete setup by the Edwards, and yet they still came out on the losing end because of Ann’s quick wit.

Orange Man on June 27, 2007 at 2:55 PM

I saw this last night. He wants 9 million by the end of the month. Is he looking for this money from the “other America”? Or the one he lives in? And can we stop him by sending AC money? It seems his whole campaign is built on nothing more than people should leave me alone, my wife is sick and I’m just tryin’ to help poor people.

PowWow on June 27, 2007 at 2:55 PM

Sniff, boo-hoo, if you keep picking on Johnny he’s gonna run home and get his mommy police[wo]man protector [sigh] whatever it is she’s playing for him. That’s so pathetic of her to let him hide behind her that way, pathetic of him to use her that way and pathetic that anyone could react positively to that kind of behavior on their part.

Shay on June 27, 2007 at 2:57 PM

Every dollar down the waste-chute that is Silky’s campaign is one less dollar for the Messiah or the H-Beast, keep it flowing I say.

bbz123 on June 27, 2007 at 3:00 PM

I can’t see how anybody can watch what happened there and not see it as a complete setup by the Edwards . . .

You mean the Edwards and Chris Matthew. He knew what was going to happen. Sorry, Chrissy. Still can’t get the image out of my mind of you bent over a log and AC ramming . . . well, you know the rest. [/banjo music]

Blake on June 27, 2007 at 3:00 PM

Only the dullest tools in Edward’s shed won’t be able to see thru this … of course, not many of them will want to see thru it.

darwin on June 27, 2007 at 3:01 PM

That ploy just reeks of desperation. If Edwards were a front runner, one of the other candidates in the next debate would be sure to make a comment about why he didn’t bring his wife on stage to answer his questions while he stood there preening like a liberal Adonis.

Fred may be accused of having a trophy wife, but Edwards is a trophy candidate.

rw on June 27, 2007 at 3:05 PM

He’s still almost a million and a half short of his target

Which target? The private anti-gravity racquetball court or the Pink Sapphire’s weeklong spa retreat?

saint kansas on June 27, 2007 at 3:06 PM

So, is Silky going to lock AC up if he gets elected? How else could donating to him have any impact whatsoever on Coulter? Can you imagine how many books she’d sell if he were elected? The material she’d have to work with?

Do note the reference in Edwards’s e-mail, too, about raising the discourse to set an example for the children. Fine words from a dKos diarist.

…who was likely most responsible for hiring Amanda Marcotte. Mandy knows all about children! Why she even writes for a parenting blog now! (NSFI)

Pablo on June 27, 2007 at 3:06 PM

That wimp is doing about what I would have expected . . . letting his wife fight his battles.

rplat on June 27, 2007 at 3:06 PM

I doubt Ann will be allowed to talk to Silky, she’s too uncontrollable, its a gamble, she could embarrass him completely, or she’ll run her big mouth and boost him. They aren’t gonna risk her embarassing him.

Bad Candy on June 27, 2007 at 3:07 PM

Anyone want to lay odds on whether Ann Coulter will be allowed to call in and nip at Silky the way Mrs. Edwards was allowed to do to AC last night?

She’ll be on with Glenn Beck.

Silky is set to be on Hardball tonight

Maybe Ann can call her friend Chris and set up an ambush like she received last night.

Valiant on June 27, 2007 at 3:08 PM

everybody wins–Silky gets his sympathy and thereby his fundraising pitch, AC gets some airtime, Hardball gets to be the stage manager. What a crock.

Perfect summary AP, as usual.

SouthernDem on June 27, 2007 at 3:11 PM

I wonder if Chrissy will have one of the Doctor’s Edwards bankrupted call in unannounced and ask him to stop channeling dead babies. Or, maybe an IRS agent will call in and grill him about his shame poverty non-profit he used to employee his campaign staff waiting for the campaign to start.

TheBigOldDog on June 27, 2007 at 3:11 PM

The dead babies are crying out – “give him money”. Don’t believe him? Just ask him.

Now his wife is in on the game! The conservative women are name calling – give us money!!

Sadly, people will.

On-my-soap-box on June 27, 2007 at 3:11 PM

Meanwhile, there seems to be some debate as to why Mrs. Edwards would have called in to confront Coulter instead of the Pony himself.

Naah, they ran a poll of what people would say about John Edwards debating Ann Coulter.

63% said “Cat Fight”.
15% said “A pretty man with nice hair vs. a woman purported to have an Adam’s Apple. ‘Pat Fight’”
22% said “John who?”

But having your wife defend you from a woman saying bad things about you… naah, that doesn’t make you look like a sissy momma’s boy. I’m sure Elizabeth Edwards will be handling War Policy, Foreign Diplomacy with Hostile Nations, etc.

You know, the stuff that makes Silky cry in the corner.

gekkobear on June 27, 2007 at 3:12 PM

It’s sad to think people are sending this greedy buffoon money when he doesn’t have a snowball chance in hell to get beyond the first primary.

Blake on June 27, 2007 at 3:13 PM

Is Chrissy Matthews now in love with Edwards? He does have a long documented history of man crushes on male democratic candidates.

Blake on June 27, 2007 at 3:16 PM

The phase “sitting there dumbly” is an odd choice of words. That was not the case. Ann Coulter handled herself admirably. She outfoxed both sputtering Edwards and red faced Matthews.

sinsing on June 27, 2007 at 3:16 PM

I want the nutroots to give to Silky. I hope they empty their bank accounts, take out second mortgages, borrow from their relatives and send it ALL ! Because that will be less money for the other Democratic candidates, and Silky doesn’t have a snowflake’s chance of becoming president.

Maxx on June 27, 2007 at 3:16 PM

Hey, SouthernDem, I think Allahpundit wants to be refered to as “the big A” not “AP”.

ROFL

Bingo! Ann completely eviscerated her. Theres far too much irrational Ann hating here but I appreciate seeing the videos. I’m guaranteed that the commentary will be the exact opposite of what I watch.

Capitalist Infidel on June 27, 2007 at 3:19 PM

Edwards is making a big push to have a respectable quarter by going to the common people of North Carolina. At least, those commoners on Figure 8 Island, a gated island community near Wilmington where Al Gore spent time resting up for the 2000 Democratic Convention.

Dudley Smith on June 27, 2007 at 3:19 PM

I’m pretty sure you can’t raise money from liberals with this kind of appeal to the emotions. They’re too cerebral and all.

NellE on June 27, 2007 at 3:27 PM

But they know Ann won’t stop no matter what they do, so the Coulter cash is meant to be an infinite source of funds.

apostle26 on June 27, 2007 at 3:35 PM

Maybe Ann finally showed a little weakness sympathy to Mrs. Silky. Meanwhile Matthews is saying in Arnold fashion “If it bleeds, we can kill it.”

Well, it had to have taken Ann a whole lot of restraint to not rip Mrs. Silky to shreads. You have to give her that! I wouldn’t have been able to.

shooter on June 27, 2007 at 4:06 PM

Give Ann credit. She called this during the show. She made some comment about how every time she or some one attacks Silky, he uses it to raise money. Unfortunately, there was a lot of cross talk at the time and she didn’t get the point out there front and center.

I did enjoy her slam on Silky’s hollywood courtroom theatrics to illiterate juries and how he was driving doctors out of business. Edwards just responded that it was more personal attacks. If it is the truth, is it still a personal attack?

Mallard T. Drake on June 27, 2007 at 4:13 PM

Orange Man on June 27, 2007 at 2:55 PM

Right; I didn’t see it that way, either, but then, I don’t despise Ann. The setup was classic pansy attack by Chrissy, and she did fine. Her target isn’t Elizabeth Edwards, a lefty idiot in her own right, it’s the Breck Girl, easily the weakest of the various candidates not routinely referred to as kooks (i.e., Ron Paul, Mike Gravel, Kucinich).

Jaibones on June 27, 2007 at 4:16 PM

I recall a couple of months ago Mrs. Edwards was on Hardball and she and CM were talking about how Bush rushed to VTech because they were white victims and took his time getting to New Orleans because they were mostly black victims. Yes, she is all about being NICE.

ctmom on June 27, 2007 at 4:32 PM

First, nobody watches hardball, he has lower numbers than Olby, so Ann gets him(Mathews) the highest profile he’s had since the election. 2nd, I just cannot be shocked at the depths that Mr.& Mrs. Pony will sink, they are the most despicable political couple ever. Including the Clintons. 3rd, are they (Mathews & the Pony’s)using Ann, or is she in on it, her book came out in paperback yesterday.

bmac on June 27, 2007 at 4:38 PM

I loved how Matthews looked at the Coulter supporters and said “this looks like Deliverance.” That’s hilarious, coming from someone who who looks and sounds like Fire Marshal Bill [on In Living Color]. Let’s see, Matthews can question Coulter about her personal attacks; yet, he’s free to insult her supporters. Once again, typical, and to be expected from these vile, Lefticles.

OhEssYouCowboys on June 27, 2007 at 4:40 PM

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said Wednesday that conservative author Ann Coulter’s attacks are hurtful and it’s important that he respond to them.

Blah, blah, blah…

“What she said about Senator Clinton and Senator Obama is outrageous,” Edwards said. “And somebody has to standpay up when she makes these kind of attacks.”

Ann should have her wife call in. That’d teach ‘em! I don’t know if anyone could be more slimey than Edwards. What a pathetic little guy…

JWS on June 27, 2007 at 4:59 PM

If you think sausage making is not a pretty sight, you haven’t watched Ann Coulter making pony baloney.

NellE on June 27, 2007 at 5:00 PM

Edwards needs to grow a pair and tell his wife to shut up. If the pansy can’t do that, he needs to stop hiding behind his wife’s skirt and just start wearing it.

Silky pony…there’s another “P” word that comes to mind…

Brass Pair on June 27, 2007 at 5:02 PM

I am watching Hard Ball right now. *UGH*

One of their producers just aknowledges that it was a preplanned phone call, but made the claim that Ann was told in advance.

JayHaw Phrenzie on June 27, 2007 at 5:10 PM

Not just the campaign, it was Elizabeth Edwards herself.

JackStraw on June 27, 2007 at 5:18 PM

Does anyone have a link to the entire segment? I’ve looked around, can’t find one. I’ve read that Coulter handed him his nether regions in other parts, and that the audience was behind her.

I loved how Matthews looked at the Coulter supporters and said “this looks like Deliverance.”

Does this really surprise you? Look at the toothless hillbilly coverage in the Times….

All the lefties have a pet foil.

Castro had Strom.

Hugo has George.

Silky has Ann.

Got a problem? Point and blame!

The only difference is that Silky isn’t in charge of anything, and thankfully, probably never really will be.

Wind Rider on June 27, 2007 at 5:51 PM

The real mystery is why Coulter sat there dumbly instead of pointing to the tactic as a picture perfect example of her pet thesis.

Good point.

I’m not completely disappointed by Ann’s response, but I expected a little more.
