Video: Coulter jokes, sort of, about jihadis killing John Edwards; Update: Edwards’s wife confronts Coulter on “Hardball” (bumped)
posted at 6:50 pm on June 26, 2007 by Allahpundit
…as a way of making a point about left-wing hypocrisy. We’re not exactly famous for defending AC around here but she’s getting a bad rap on this clip, which comes from this morning’s GMA by way of Edwards’s campaign. As noted yesterday, Silky’s desperate for an attack from the right which he can turn into one of his patented shameless fundraising gimmicks. Coulter almost, but not quite, delivered this morning — but thanks to the magic of video editing software, they were able to clip just enough out of context to stir up the nutroots hornet nest and milk a few more donations.
You’ll have to read Newsbusters for the full transcript, to see what point she was trying to make. Those with long memories will already know. Thanks to Weasel Zippers for the tip.
Update: Coulter seemed a little nervous here, didn’t she?

Actually, the point she’s making about Maher is really good. No wonder that prissy little lawyer’s campaign edited it.
Ann Coulter saying something witty and clever…ah, that takes me back…

Coulter jokes, sort of, about jihadis killing John Edwards.
Doing the jobs the American people won’t do, but probably would like to. Just joking, sort of….
soulsirkus on June 26, 2007 at 4:37 PM
She may be getting hit but she gets paid big bucks for that, as even she will admit. I love Ann and read her columns, but I still think she’s better at making a solid point in print than in tv interviews and speeches.
thedecider on June 26, 2007 at 4:37 PM
She was referring to Bill Maher and his comments on Dick Cheney.
tomas on June 26, 2007 at 4:38 PM
That was a bit of compass checking while the Senate GOP slips into Susan Collins’ extra panties.
I’ve defended George Bush at every turn and taught my sons to do the same, but for the rest of his term he’s on his own. How could something so ‘right’ turn out so wrong.
Hening on June 26, 2007 at 4:41 PM
He’s not really important enough for that, at least not since he’s stopped his practice of attempting to ruin the medical profession for money.
Esthier on June 26, 2007 at 4:41 PM
Well as long as Cuomo was going to ask Coulter about things that happened six months ago, why didn’t he ask here to predict whether the Bears or the Colts would win the Super Bowl?

and, geez. 15 seconds? is there any further context they could’ve cut out?
jummy on June 26, 2007 at 4:47 PM
While I stopped being an Ann-fan some time ago, this is as revolting as Gunga-Dan reporting that G. Gordon Liddy was telling his listeners to shoot federal agents in the head.
However, it basically comes down to this: If sheeple are so apathetic as to judge anyone based on a sound bite that is clearly out of context, then we’re all doomed anyway.
MadisonConservative on June 26, 2007 at 4:53 PM
Can we PLEASE get rid of Ann by now?
She’s become the Michael Moore of our side. And by that, I mean she’s far more useful for the other party than for the party who’s ideals she’s supposedly trumpeting.
Vyce on June 26, 2007 at 4:56 PM
Silly girl!
Conservatives are not allowed to make jokes.
That prevelege is reserved for libs like Rosie and Kerry for when they say something they mean but use the “it was a joke card”.
Ching chang chong or you’ll end up in Iraq.
TheSitRep on June 26, 2007 at 4:57 PM
If the liberal nut-jobs would actually take the time to research this, even they would agree it was taken WAY out of context.
Ann is just too easy a target for them.
heatherrc77 on June 26, 2007 at 4:58 PM
Did you actually READ the transcripts?? You can clearly see she was sooooooo right.
heatherrc77 on June 26, 2007 at 4:59 PM
Hey….it works for me.
davy on June 26, 2007 at 5:01 PM
Were you not paying attention here?
Esthier on June 26, 2007 at 5:06 PM
Ann Coulter is a true patriot who is not ruled by political correctness. What she has to say on important political issues is important. She ought to be admired by those who love this country. She’s an easy target because she refuses to kowtow in order to be liked.
sinsing on June 26, 2007 at 5:14 PM
If you read the whole thing what she said makes a lot of sense. Leave it to the dishonest liberals to edit it in a way as to make it seem she said something she didn’t.
Rose on June 26, 2007 at 5:16 PM
Actually Ann is quite credible.
Appeasement is not a viable option.
MarkB on June 26, 2007 at 5:17 PM
Sometimes I think of Ann Coulter as being the right wing female equivalent of H.L. Menecken. H.L. was also never afraid to speak his mind, regardless of who he ticked off in the process.
pilamaye on June 26, 2007 at 5:19 PM
I’m starting a write in vote for AC as the next press secretary. Now THAT would be fun.
Mojave Mark on June 26, 2007 at 5:19 PM
Many / most of Moore (or Maher, or Rosie O’Donnell, etc.)’s fans believe he’s just soooooooo right too.
Point is, Moore is more frequently a liability for the left than anything else.
That’s what Ann is these days. It’s her making deliberately provocative comments which ALWAYS get out of context, and provides Edwards or general liberal puppets in the media with the opportunity to present her views as “what conservatives really believe”, which of course isn’t helped (as with her Edwards “faggot” remark) by the legion of conservative bloggers who clap their hands like seals in agreement with her whenever she makes these comments. She’s an albatross. Someone like Michelle Malkin I can respect, but then again, she’s not making an ass of herself like Ann usually is these days.
Vyce on June 26, 2007 at 5:20 PM
It still doesn’t sound like you read it.
Rose on June 26, 2007 at 5:28 PM
Should we all silence our remarks just so the Liberals don’t take it out of context?
You can’t take what Michael Moore says out of context, because, well, it isn’t…
heatherrc77 on June 26, 2007 at 5:29 PM
Personally, I’m hoping Edwards has a styling accident and sets his hair on fire.
Guardian on June 26, 2007 at 5:35 PM
vyce, remember bill bennet? he quoted the premise from a widely acclaimed liberal book’s assertion that the 90′s crime reduction wasthe result of increased abortions in poor communities of color as an example of morally sleazy and non-cogent argumentation. they took the clip, got their fifteen seconds out of it, and “recontextualized” it to portray bennet as having ppositively asserted the argument he was in fact mallligning.
progressives will do that. if coulter wasn’t there, they’d be doing it to george will.
jummy on June 26, 2007 at 5:35 PM
After seeing the transcript, its hard to come down on Ann for this.
Ryan Gandy on June 26, 2007 at 5:36 PM
Seriously, read the transcript. She said nothing wrong here. Only those intent on doing careful editting will see it the way you are.
If you want to be angry at her fine, but at least have a good reason for it.
Esthier on June 26, 2007 at 5:42 PM
Ann for Presicent. A man can dream.
On-my-soap-box on June 26, 2007 at 5:50 PM
I saw this interview live yesterday morning. And the second this part came out of her mouth, I knew it was going to get chopped to bits and used. Edwards camp is still riding his $400.00 haircut. They needed something new. When he was on with Leno last night, he was still whining about the haircut. But this was a joke.

Is he going to send Elizabeth out to confront our the muslim terrorists, too?
SouthernGent on June 26, 2007 at 7:04 PM
I like Ann!
So often she is throwing our shots that the interviewer clearly doesn’t even “get”. When asked about the whold “fagot” incident (nothing like an interview on breaking news – she how far back to the have to dig), Cuomo tried to paint her into an answer that would require her to condemn conservatives, she turned it on him and added that she was extremely “hurt” by the reactions the comment had garnered, particularly the one from “I’m a pretty princess in a Pink Party Dress.com”. Cuomo was absolutely clueless, took it seriously and asked “why” – meaning Ann had to give him a hint.
Not only did she slam the whole concept of basing our responses on “feelings” she pointed out how stupid it was to respond to such criticism and how ridiculous it would be to respond to such criticism considering the souce – basically slamming poor Chris for even asking the question – All that in a very quick sound-bite answer that flew over Cuomo’s head, thus scoring another hit in pointing out how slow on the up-take liberal media idiots are.
Priceless!
Fatal on June 26, 2007 at 7:06 PM
That’s one thing that liberals just can’t seem to handle; turn abouts fair play.
Speakup on June 26, 2007 at 7:08 PM

amerpundit on June 26, 2007 at 7:08 PM
Fatal-That’s exactly it, most people don’t “get” her jokes, she is usually the smartest one in the room. Any conservative that thinks she’s “an extremist” or offensive, is a moron, and simply isn’t listening.

Paret Two:
Cancer is the ultimate moral authority.
Silence is golden when it is your opponent who is silenced.
Motherhood is the ultimate moral authority, too.
Do not criticize people with “the language of hate”.
“Politeness” is the ultimate moral authority, after all.
Thankfully Elizabeth Edwards will never see the inside of the White House without a cheap tourbook.
profitsbeard on June 26, 2007 at 7:10 PM
Ann is right on this one. The Edwards video is out of context and IS being used to raise money.
No self flagellation required.
Sammy316 on June 26, 2007 at 7:14 PM
Elizabeth Edwards is an idiot and a leftist, but I repeat myself. She can take her unimpeachable moral authority and shove it — if the Silky Pony isn’t man enough (he isn’t) to debate Ann Coulter straight up, then his wife should be too embarrassed to bring it up in public.
But Elizabeth isn’t smart enough to know this, I guess.
Jaibones on June 26, 2007 at 7:14 PM
Ann Coulter serves up another hypocritical liberal and tomorrow morning the conservative commentators will be apologizing for her. Mrs. Edwards proved the point Ann was making at CPAC, they send an “untouchable” (grieving mother, cancer victim)to make outlandish and ludicrous demands.
Ann Coulter constantly draws out the enemy fire and her own side ducks.
Why do conservatives go on Matthews show anyway?
peacenprosperity on June 26, 2007 at 7:15 PM
Ann Coulter seems to be the only Republican will balls these days.
Frank Nitti on June 26, 2007 at 7:18 PM
“Edwards, A real man for President”. Now that’s an insulting remark.
MM can speak to his loons and that’s fine by me as I know he’s simply full of it. I choose to read and listen to AC expecting to see some valid points made. The liberals can just “shove it”
Silence is the word of the day, week, year century etc… as long as your conservative don’t speak or write. DOn;t hold your breath Mrs. Edwards.

stop the hate speech…that’s ALL you democrats do Mrs. Edwards.
wryteacher on June 26, 2007 at 7:23 PM
Let me see if I get this right…
John Edwards can’t debate on Fox because they are to mean.
John Edwards has his wife call up and whine about a political pundit talking mean.
They can’t talk to their neighbor because he is mean.
And he wants to lead this country? Only if the other leaders of the world aren’t mean.
right2bright on June 26, 2007 at 7:29 PM
Cancer or not, when you step into the public arena, you better be wearing a helmet.
This was a setup. “Watch Coulter beat up a cancer-stricken mother who is totally polite. See how evil those conservatives are?”
I hope AQ targets liberal buildings next time, although they probably won’t as thanks for enabling the next attacks in the first place….
unamused on June 26, 2007 at 7:30 PM
Anyone here have a way of making that into a bumper sticker?
unamused on June 26, 2007 at 7:31 PM
I’m not big on Ann either but politics aren’t about making an analogy or politcally clever sarcasm. It’s about the sound bite! And which way you can political steer those sound bites .
Drtuddle on June 26, 2007 at 7:37 PM
There are ways of making a point without implying wishing death on someone. I’ve always appreciated Coulter, but talk like this is just a turn off.

Keep speaking Anne. We need you.
John Edwards is a useless waste of skin. Using his wife to fight his battle with Anne.

Mrs Edwards is waaaay out of line asking AC (or anyone) to, basically, shut up.
Tru2my2 on June 26, 2007 at 7:39 PM
I’m not a fan of Ann, she’s too abrasive for my tastes, but after reading the context of the first clip I think her point was well made.
My initial impression without the context was very negative. More liberal dirty tricks.
FloatingRock on June 26, 2007 at 7:41 PM

RobertCSampson on June 26, 2007 at 7:45 PM
Typical leftist ploy … try to shut one up by saying what they say is “mean” and “hateful”. What a joke. Any sympathy I had for Elizabeth Edwards has evaporated.
I believe Mrs. Edwards was the one behind the hiring of the
vicious misandrist Amanda Marcotte.
Maybe Bush should try that routine at his next press conference … ask his detractors to stop being so mean.

No, she didn’t.
forged rite on June 26, 2007 at 7:48 PM
I’m going to photoshop Carrot Top’s hair onto John Edward’s head.
But please don’t take that out of context.
Dave Shay on June 26, 2007 at 7:50 PM
I think Ann is probably smarter than that exchange suggests, or at least could be. On the one hand, she certainly gets credit for not curling up in a ball, which I guess was the intended response. But she could’ve been more aggressive in calling out the Edwardses on the cheap tactic of having Elizabeth make the call. Or she could have explained the actual context of yesterday’s comment, which was quite obviously a dig at Bill Maher and media hypocrisy, not at Edwards. Unfortunately, I don’t think her actual choice to focus on the source of the Edwardses’ wealth (while certainly relevant in other circumstances) came off as more than unconvincing ad hominems.
For his part, Matthews could have done a bit to interfere with Mrs. Edwards’ fillibustering. But that was no surprise.
Blacklake on June 26, 2007 at 7:51 PM
am I being to cynical to beleive that Elizabeth Edwards Cancer is way overblown and not that serious, all part of the campaign?
jp on June 26, 2007 at 7:52 PM
I was furious over the last few things s he’s said but this is taken so far out of context its in the next county. That was a cynical remark where Ann didn’t call for his death but its taken sufficiently alone to be thought of as a death threat.
Wonder how Salman Rushdie reacts?
Defector01 on June 26, 2007 at 7:54 PM
She kept running her fingers through her hair like she didn’t want to listen, or was uncomfortable. Not that I blame her.
She may be a bit harsh sometimes, but I think that’s a good thing. Somebody has to stand up to the liberals and the Daily Kos-type (Who use even worse speech to comment on which side of the bed Bush wakes up on).
I wonder if she would have called Lindsey Graham and asked him not to call us conservatives “bigots.” I wonder if she would have called Barack Obama and asked him not to hatefully call us Evangelicals “dividers.”
HYTEAndy on June 26, 2007 at 7:54 PM
Ann Coulter is brilliant! She gets the other side to confirm her points and they don’t even see it coming or going.

I defended her for the homosexual jokes. I’m not defending her here, save for one good point. Wishing someone dead is the worst of the worst.
But she is right about one thing; Edwards is taking advantage of Coulter’s comments, and Elizabeth Edwards certainly seems to have some trouble fessing up to that, or even denying it.

PRCalDude on June 26, 2007 at 8:19 PM
Ann just proves again that Edwards is the f word. Not as in homosexual, but as in pansy.
He has his sick wife call up and ask the scary 98 pound blonde girl to stop being so mean and bullying him on the playground.
Ann is caustic, she is purposely sensational, and she nails these folks right on the head. Like she implies in the exchange with Mrs Edwards, she is an author, not a ‘debater’ nor a candidate.
When Ann makes these statements that outrage the left, she is being funny. Its funny because it is true. And it pisses off the Edwards for the same reason.
Get them, Ann.
