What is it with the celebrity culture in America these days?
Senator Kennedy is a US Senator from, well, the Kennedys. THE Kennedys. And he sings like an American Idol auditionist who has no clue that he’s lousy at it. Instead of giving him the “Simon LOOK” of you-are- the-most-talentless-turd-whose-had-the-nerve-to-present-himself-on-the-stage-this-whole-year, the host flatters Kennedy – and Kennedy soaks it up, delighted.
Apart from the ridiculousness of the political aspects of this, it’s the queer devaluing of real work and the overvaluing of show business that makes this so bizarre. Isn’t entertainment supposed to give people a diversion for a little while? Why does “famous” trump acomplishment in a hundred other fields of endeavor that produce concrete results? How about Clinton starring with huge self-awareness in campaign commercials? Running down backstage hallways like a rock star?
Suppose it’s better than the Senate inviting actresses who played farmers to testify about farm foreclosures rather than asking actual farmers.
