I still fail to see your point. Why wouldn’t we provide only our allies with strategic supplies such as iron? Unless the Europeans were deliberately paying too much for the iron, I don’t see how this offsets our lend-lease deficit either.

The plain fact of the matter is that FDR used the lend-lease program to give our allies aid, without any expectation of full compensation, for the simple reason that declaring war was not politically feasible. We never intended to join the axis powers as evidenced by the fact that we didn’t send oil and iron to Japan and the fact that we actively supplied Germany’s enemies with the implements of war. Bringing up the issue of embargos only proves my point.

I was disappointed that Gibson went easy on him though. He should have savagely attacked him when he started talking about how people only got $400-$500 off their taxes (I know I was ecstatically happy to get the money I got back, especially since the cuts came during my first job out of college). I think it’s imperitive to rub elitist jerks like Mehlmans face in their arrogance and stupidity when you get a chance. As it was the guy clearly came to the realization about halfway through the interview that he didn’t know what the hell he was talking about. The confused sadness in his voice was magical. I know the schadenfreude is a little unseemly but I really don’t like limousine liberal’s thinking they’re better than me because they can afford not to care how mucb of their money the government takes.

Sorry I want to have a three bedroom house and a reliable late model car (it’s a Cadillac…Is that wrong?) Pete. How much money do you think we got out of the lend-lease deal? According to Wikipedia, we sent approximately 50 billion in supplies and received only 7 billion in services in return, almost all of which came from Britain. If we were doing lend-lease for the money/services, I’d say we got screwed.

Nor do I blame them. Were some despot to emerge from a magical portal and overrun America, I’m sure there’d be more than a few modern politicians–most of the sporting “D”s by their names, with a few noteable “R”s–eager to embrace the “forward-thinking” policies of the new boss. Such traitors certainly wouldn’t be representing me, or standing for the United States I live in.

Come to think of it, I’m not even sure this is entirely a hypothetical. Those “D”s might stand just as well for “Dhimmi.”

Well, that may keep you in cheap gardeners and nannies but it has pretty unkind results for law abiding Americans in the lower income brackets who are made jobless by these illegal workers or who through their taxes have to subsidize health care, education, court and jail costs etc. for colonists who are breaking American law and sending money to their failed state Mexico.

Why don’t guilty liberals give away their own money instead of everyone else’s via taxes? It’s been documented that they donate to charity much less than conservatives do. The worst such as Bono actually avoid taxes while banging the drum for countries to increase foreign aid to Africa that derives from those taxes he personally is shirking!

*About the only exception to this rule is the guns we sent. Many of the lend-lease guns have re-entered the US as mil-surp weapons, often from second or third hand countries.

The Vichy French government was a bit more than passively involved in Hitler’s plans, though it’s not surprising that people aren’t particularly aware of this fact. It’s a bit of French history that isn’t exactly celebrated.
