We’re shooting at a moving target here but best estimates are that opponents are within six votes or so of killing this monster in its crib when the first cloture vote comes to the floor tomorrow. John Hawkins’s Senate source said last week that the first vote is the time to get it done, otherwise it’ll pick up momentum and force a do-or-die second cloture a few days later that will determine the bill’s fate. Here’s the list of undecideds, again per the Corner:
Bond (R-Mo.), Bingaman (D-N.M.), Burr (R-N.C.), Boxer (D-Calif.), Cochran (R-Miss.), Conrad (D-N.D.), Ensign (R-Nev.), Levin (D-Mich.), Gregg (R-N.H.), Nelson (D-Neb.), Hatch (R-Utah), Webb (D-Va.)
George Voinovich might be in play, too. One of our commenters claims to have called Ben Nelson’s office and been told that he’ll vote yes on cloture but no on the final up-or-down vote itself. That’s a transparent sham designed to give him political cover so that he can plausibly claim later that he voted “against” the bill. The critical vote is cloture, since it requires 60 to proceed; the final vote requires a simple majority, which the amnesty faction probably already has. They don’t need his vote for that but they do need it for cloture, and he’s planning on giving it to them. Here are the Senate phone numbers; even if, like me, you’re too apathetic normally to practice direct democracy, this is a special occasion. If you call Nelson’s office, you might care to mention this result from today’s Rasmussen survey, which, let’s hope to god, will prove to be the final “killer poll” needed to euthanize this sucker:
Among the public, there is a bi-partisan lack of enthusiasm for the Senate bill. It is supported by 22% of Republicans, 23% of Democrats, and 22% of those not affiliated with either major party. It is opposed by 52% of Republicans, 50% of Democrats, and 48% of unaffiliateds.
The closer we get to 41 “no” votes, the easier it may be to shame the other wafflers into joining us. The House GOP is threatening to hit Bush where he lives over this. Start calling.
Update: One down, four to six to go.
Update: Burr’s office is lying to callers.
Update: Damn it.
Update: Boxer says nay, hopefully.
Update: Damn — Noam Askew says Webb is still on the fence.
Update: Martin from MVRWC says he called Kit Bond’s office and was told Bond will vote yes on cloture if his amendment removing the amnesty provision from the bill is accepted. I think that means the second cloture vote, not the first one tomorrow. Presumably Bond’s voting yes on that, then.
Update: I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
Our date with destiny is Tuesday morning (tomorrow) at 11:30.
That is the schedule for dealing with two unrelated bills, including the cloture vote to allow the S. 1639 Kennedy/Bush Comprehensive Amnesty Bill back on the Senate floor.
Your NumbersUSA team of lobbyists — and our allied organizations and Senate staffers — feel that at this time we are 5 votes short of killing this monstrosity of a bill in the first round.
But those last five are proving to be extremely difficult votes to get. Constituency pressure is proving to be about the only thing that works — and it has worked remarkably well in places like Georgia, Texas and even beginning to work in Michigan.
Update: A Senate “insider” who spoke to Rich Lowry says he’s suddenly feeling pessimistic.
Update: Got an e-mail from a reporter friend who says Bond, Cochran, Bingaman, and of course Ben Nelson are all voting for cloture.
It’s going to pass.
Update: Boxer’s voting for cloture too, says Noam Askew.

I saw that others have posted their letters to Senator Bond et al so here is my e-mail to Richard Burr — he probably just deletes anything with my name on it now.
Dear Richard,
I have dropped all formality in dealing with you, because it is obvious that you wish to give up your Senate seat and return to North Carolina. You were sent to Washington with a mandate to represent the people of this state and not the terrorists that blew up buildings in New York and Washington, or the people that come up from impoverished nations south of the border to undercut our wages and take jobs from hard working Americans – the jobs that those Americans WANT to do.
Richard, John Edwards lost the seat you occupy because he refused to listen to his fellow North Carolinians, he thought we were put in North Carolina to serve him and never really understood that he was sent to Washington to serve us. Loch Faircloth lost that seat to Edwards because he forgot all about the conservative base that got him elected. Now, you are going to lose that seat because you’ve forgotten that you represent the American people in general and the people of North Carolina in particular. Makes me wonder if the seat isn’t cursed.
Tomorrow is your last chance to prove you haven’t forgotten that you serve at OUR (the people of North Carolina’s) pleasure, Richard. If you vote no on cloture for the amnesty bill, then you may stand a chance of being reelected. If you vote yes on cloture for the amnesty bill then you WILL STAND NO CHANCE of being reelected. We the people of North Carolina are not stupid, we know that the cloture vote is the important vote, we know that the bill will definitely pass the Democrat majority if it is brought to the floor. If you for cloture, as is being reported, you will be fired – period. Is being invited to the White House to have your picture taken with a lame duck president and murderous, drunken Bostonian really worth killing your political career over? Do you really want to be the footnote in history that you will become with a yes vote?
I implore you, Richard, please DO NOT DO THIS. Be an American, look out for the safety and security of Americans. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO VOTE YES. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO END YOUR CAREER THIS WAY. Only 22% of Americans support this travesty of a bill, I’m willing to bet the support is even LESS in North Carolina. And no, it isn’t because we are bigots, it’s because we respect the rule of law.
Richard, don’t get caught up in the hysteria and frenzy that the president has started because he’s concerned about his domestic policy legacy. You voted against us when you increased the minimum wage, you added insult to injury by sending me that stupid letter in which you listed all the reason I gave for NOT increasing the minimum wage as reasons why you voted to increase it. I will forgive that less than brilliant move on your part if you will be a man now, stand up against crowd, against the president, be an AMERICAN and vote NO on cloture.
Please, Richard, vote with North Carolina, vote for North Carolina, do the right thing and vote against this amnesty. You owe it to us.
Sincerely,
Steven Rhoades

Just got through to the office of Thad Cochran (MS). The staffer didn’t say the senator hadn’t decided which way to vote — just that he “hadn’t announced” his decision. I told him I expected that kind of scumbag politics from Lott but not from Cochran.
Boy, did that guy sound stressed. Keep up the heat, because they’re definitely feeling it!!

Senator Bond may be right. Perhaps, his anti-amnesty amendment is strong enough that the immigration bill would be alright. Look, I’m not at all moderate on this issue. I have called both my Senators twice opposing this bill. I’ve had my mother call her Senators. She had ten friends call Senator Burr (R-NC). I’ve had my brother call Senator Smith (R-OR). Still, there are some good provisions in this bill, if the amnesty is taken out. At the very least, we should keep an open mind towards Senator Bond until we have the details.
Of course, Bond’s amendment is a good one and if it passes the Senate, it would likely be a killer amendment. It would be ironic if Bond is successful and we find ourselves calling our Senators urging it passage.

I tried calling Gregg but his answering machine is full. I’m a NH resident although I live in MD because of the Navy. Although I’ve wasted my time and dimes contacting MD senators it’s hopeless, I just hope I’ve managed to bother them a great deal in the past month. I thought Gregg would be easier to contact. But nope he’s not available this evening; his answering machine is full.
I read about the citizen who contacted his/her senators and was threatened with harassment because they called 3 times and I’m actually surprised that my MD senators haven’t tried the same thing. House Rep Steny Hoyer has already received my phone calls, and I’ve received a form letter about how concerned he was about having a fair immigration bill. Sigh, Maryland is so predictable and boring. I wish Michael Steele was my senator.

“Do constituents not understand the difference between an

Wonderful, isn’t it. This is how things work in DC. You call, the staffers think you’re a moron, so chances are your message never gets to your Senator.

Just got off phone with Senator Ensign’s office and am not encouraged. His staffer said that the Senator wanted to look at the amendments(we know what that means),-that no one really knows what is going to be in this bill until the amendments are voted on, before he decides how to vote.I respectfully reminded the staffer that a yes vote on cloture would basically be a vote for the bill. BTW–He said that all 5 lines to his office were lit up, and in the last few hours he has only received “2″ calls for this bill.

Watching Sen. Jeff Sessions on C-SPAN2. He’s like a double barreled shotgun blowing holes through the Shamnesty Bill.
dddave on June 25, 2007 at 7:31 PM
The pro amnesty politicians have promised to strip the amendments from the bill after the cloture vote and I tend to believe they’re telling the truth. It’s an up or down, pass or fail, all or nothing, win or lose thing now.
Personally I can wait will some of these CongressCritters terms come up to fire them from their jobs and let them see the unemployement situation up close and personal.

HEY! Please DON’T bully my Senator Burr. Burr is a very good Conservative no matter where he votes on this one. He is a NEW senator, and may be trying to build bridges in the Senate with a vote on an issue that won’t pass the House.
I disagree with Burr if he votes for cloture. But I KNOW Burr is good for America, North Carolina, the Senate, and the Republican Party.
Burr is a good one. I pity the republic if we run good conservative men like Burr out of public office based on an issue that was thrust upon him. I’m certain Burr wants the borders CLOSED.

amerpundit on June 25, 2007 at 7:49 PM
Today, I called two presidential candidates, my two senators, my congressman, and the state and national GOP parties. I was pleasant, as the staffers aren’t at fault, but I told them in no uncertain terms that I will never for anyone who votes for cloture and if cloture is voted in the affirmative I will never send another cent to the part and if amnesty is signed into law I will change my party affiliation. I made sure to tell them that I was a first time caller, someone new.
I wish this nightmare would end.
Darksean on June 25, 2007 at 7:50 PM
I agree with SSG Fuzzy. If Burr wants the borders closed he will vote no on cloture and wait until someone builds that d@m^ fence on the border before he signs on to any bill. Whether this was thrust upon him is not relevant. It is upon him all the same and if he can’t do the right thing on this one what makes you think he will do right on anything else, ThackerAgency. Geez..it’s not that difficult. Do you only have one good guy in that state? I say we run them out until we get some that act like Americans.

I don’t think I have ever been more angry with the GOP or felt more betrayed and abandoned politically. I have sent Kit Bond several emails on this issue. My last one, besides expressing my disappointment in the GOP generally and him specifically stated that if he votes for cloture and/or the amnesty bill, my last vote for him will indeed be my last vote for him.

The problem with a lot of these senators is that they aren’t up for election next year. They figure that by the time they are, we morons will have forgotten how they voted. I certainly won’t forget and I hope no one else does. What the Senate needs is a good cleaning out of the entrenched politicians. If it happened, the new bunch wouldn’t feel so invulnerable.

(Too many staffers asked for my address last week.)
I need a beer, or six.

c3cummins on June 25, 2007 at 9:13 PM
I fear that the money behind amnesty is so powerful, that democracy takes a back seat. The fact is that money talks and bullsheet walks.
Politicians always respond better to carrots than to stick. Everyone opposed to amnesty is offering stick i.e., “I won’t vote for you”. But the business interests and the political system is offering money and influence to vote for it. And that is how representative democracy functions. It functions not by plebiscite, by majority rule, but in fact, circumvents majority rule by using instead representative rule. This is why all major decisions in the US, other than elections, are decided by an elite cadre of men and women, and not the people.
Thus, these decisions, especially momentous decisions such as amnesty for 12 million people, are subject to the influence of money and privilege bestowed on a select few by a select few. Your protestations have no real leverage over them. Money and influence are things the people can not bestow, accept once in four years. All decisions taken in between elections, and almost all fall in that time frame, are, therefore, subject to corruption.
This is what you are seeing now.
This is the downside to this type of democracy.

jdawg, thanks for the site. I read the whole thing, although I think amerpudit’s quote include a sarcastic comment in rebuttal.
I was more alarmed by how staffers ignore or delete our calls if we’re not from their state. On an insignificant issue, I can see that, but on a bill where one vote has the chance to change our country forever and bankrupt SS? No; Senate leaders in particular shouldn’t do this, they’re supposed to be the senior guys in Congress we can rely on.
I LOVED the staffers who think we are racists because we want our borders enforced. As for the NAFTA/NA Union bit… I didn’t give it much creedence before, but I do now. This immigration bill is a great way to blur the lines of sovereignty and pave the way towards a more ‘co-operative’ alliance between the big 3 in N.A.

… and his political career in AZ is over.
Kyl is right behind him.

It is time for the Right to bury the pansy GOP Senators (bury as in kill their political career of selling out America, not their lives as much as many of us would like to wish it…).

One of the benefits for him that his poll numbers can’t get much lower.
I think the only legit thing that might scare him is the threat by the House Republicans to possibly stop supporting him on Iraq.
I’d imagine that most of us don’t fancy the idea of playing (more) politics with Iraq, in that fashion.
So I, like you, am open to suggestions.

I’m with you. I am going to help get them out of office. I hope Pullen will run, he is a good guy for the Primary.

Please remember at election time that our traitorous Senators from Georgia helped write this abortion of an immigration bill, and that if it passes, they are as much to blame as those who are voting for it.

We need people to show up in the Senate Gallery on Tuesday. Many liberals are walking the hall of the Senate trying to get support.
If conservatives show up in force, it could turn the tide.

Chambliss and Isakson are definate NO votes. They have listened to the massive outcry of Georgians against this bill and bowed to our wishes. I commend them and they will have a long career representing us in the US Senate.

Okay suppose the real people who are running this country win the cloture vote thing tomorrow and we all pretty much know that means the bill passes. What are we going to do? How are we going to get the 80% of Americans who hate this bill united to oust these senators? It’s obvious that our government is not by the people for the people anymore. We have to so something to show them it isn’t just us bloggers and talk radio who are mad. How do we start the revolution? I’ll do my part.
What the f**K is this now?
White House prepared to open U.S. air routes to Canada, Mexico
An author and investigative journalist says the Bush administration is working on a plan that would essentially erase national borders for air carriers, perhaps paving the way for Mexican and Canadian airlines to compete with U.S. carriers for American domestic and international routes.

I wasn’t … I have one Senator that will pander to anyone willing to put a buck in his coffer. Another that flip-flopped his “opinions” right after the recent election. Oh, and a Representative that just sent me a three page letter informing me that I am naive and uninformed.
I noted to both of our Senators that they need to dig deep down to find their cajones and spines, unpack them, and take them to work in the morning.
I reminded them that government operates at the consent of the governed and, should this bill pass, I am ready to withdraw my consent declare that I can govern myself. Among other things, best of luck in tax collection. I am done funding illegal immigrant schooling, health-care, … at the expense of myself and my fellow citizens.
I also emailed the Whitehouse and noted that I am done with polite requests and demanded that the executive branch start enforcing the law.

Oh well. This is how the Roman Empire collapsed. I’ve just gotta position myself as a warlord now. yeah. that’s it. heh.

I don’t think I could even put into words my disgust of the amnesty bill. I agree with the general opinions here.
But on the other hand, I don’t see why everyone is so shocked by the bill being passed or by the way Republican “leaders” are letting you down. We’ve basically had zero border security thus far, no one has done anything about it, and there has been no major uproar about it until now. What is the big shocker that generally politicians (and our political system or “game”) are basically corrupt and they don’t care about what you think?

Couldn’t sleep -My husband suggested I send my thoughts to the President,(like I haven’t been doing that everyday for 3 weeks) so I e-mailed him this just now.
Mr. President: I have been a Republican since the day both my parents voted for Dwight D. Eisenhower. Like my parents, I taught my children to become educated in the world of politics, and become involved with their government. My son’s first presidential election was voting for you, Mr. Bush. He drove from Texas A&M at Galveston to our home in Humble, so he and I could cast our votes for you together - and that night- well you know about that night - I wept (along with my mother) and we put away our celebration food to keep until you became President. The food was a bit stale, but we brought it out to celebrate your (our) victory. We were so happy and proud.
How far we have come, Mr. President. As of tonight, I am relinquishing my Republican credentials, but I am a conservative, and I am still an American, struggling to do a job that an American wants to do, but is having a hard time doing it, for I must “compete” with people here illegally. You, on the other hand have sold-out your country (and your base) to the highest bidders - big business, and the government of Mexico. Do you know what angers me the most? - You have made cynics out of both of my children concerning our political process, and made what I told them about you a lie. I shall never forgive you for that. Adios, Senor Bush.

Yes, I have been making tons of phone calls too. I tell the Senator’s staff my name, and I state my position. They always ask my address, and I quickly reply: “I do not want a written response from Senator so-and-so. What I want are positive results, not just cheap talk.” I then provide my phone number. I conclude by reminding the staff of the Senator’s sworn responsibility to uphold the Constitution, which stipulates that the primary purpose of government is to enforce existing laws, and not to reward law-breakers with USA citizenship.
We need to continue to educate our co-workers, our friends, our relatives about this amnesty bill.
Keep up the phone calls!!
