PETA to Moore: You should probably lose some weight, don’t you think?

Via Weasel Zippers again. This isn’t the first time they’ve used an open letter to try to siphon off buzz from a left-wing icon whose pet cause is in the news. Gore got off easy when they pitched vegetarianism to him as a solution to global warming. The world’s most “voluptuous” socialist gets it a bit harder:
Congratulations from PETA on the reviews for SiCKO. Although we think that your film could actually help reform America’s sorely inadequate health care system, there’s an elephant in the room, and it is you. With all due respect, no one can help but notice that a weighty health issue is affecting you personally. We’d like to help you fix that. Going vegetarian is an easy and life-saving step that people of all economic backgrounds can take in order to become less reliant on the government’s shoddy healthcare system, and it’s something that you and all Americans can benefit from personally. Vegetarians weigh, on average, up to 20 percent less than their meat-eating counterparts—meaning less weight-related problems like heart attacks and strokes—and live about eight years longer. I’m sure that your fans would appreciate having you around longer!
The very shocking, starkly (libertarian) conservative appeal with which it concludes:
Yes, America’s health care system needs to be fixed, but personal responsibility is a big part of why people look and feel as ill as they do.
It’s a big part of a lot more than that. Read this nifty little precis by Steyn about the rather unhealthy consequences of health care is “fixed.”

Say, didn’t Moore go to fat camp last year? That really worked out, didn’t it?

PETA vs. Moore. Yikes. I may reluctantly have to be on Moore’s side in this one.

They both suck.

My favorite bumper sticker applies here:
“I didn’t claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat veggies.”
Militant Vegetarians can kiss my meat-eatin arse!
Pass the steak!
tickleddragon on June 23, 2007 at 2:34 PM
Moore, like everyone else, has the right to be fat if he wants.
(as much as it pains me to defend that fat bugger.)
tickleddragon on June 23, 2007 at 2:35 PM
Gives new meaning to the term “Red on Red”!
fusionaddict on June 23, 2007 at 2:42 PM
Here’s an idea. Let’s ban the sale of meat. People can eat only what they kill. The result would be more guns, thinner people and zero tolerance for PETA.
RedWinged Blackbird on June 23, 2007 at 2:42 PM
I’m glad to assume personal responsibility for that excellent ribeye steak I devoured last night.
infidel4life on June 23, 2007 at 2:50 PM
In all fairness, I saw him in an interview where he said he needed to take personal responsibility and stated he knew he was part of the problem. I, too, hate to defend him, but there it is. Also, while obesity does create a lot of health related illness, the amount spent on drug and alcohol rehabilitation is astronomical, and then there is smoking. I am not going to sit in judgement on anyone because of their lifestyle or body habitus. I work for a vascular surgeon group and I would say that the number of truly obese patients we see in a very busy practice only comprises about 30% of our patients.

This is like when Oklahoma plays Texas in football, I don’t know who to root for. (I’m a Nebraska alum)

Gotta love Steyn:
I think I know what he’s talking about, but I could be completely wrong. I emailed him for a translation, but any Anglophobes out there that have their game on…bring it.
Jaibones on June 23, 2007 at 3:09 PM
AlGore is selling carbon credits, will PETA soon roll out meat credits to cash in on the scam?
Buzzy on June 23, 2007 at 3:39 PM
I refuse to jump in the whole “our health care system needs to be fixed.” I think it’s fantastic! I pay $267 a month, $15 co pay for doctors visits and $10 co pay for medication and a tiny $250 deductable. I know for some $267 a month is too expensive, there are plenty of plans for much less. At least here in North Carolina (blue cross blue shield) you can be covered for as little as $69 a month.
Capitalist Infidel on June 23, 2007 at 3:40 PM
I love how the left eats their own. Just wait until San Francisco hits critical mass, that will be entertaining.
Theworldisnotenough on June 23, 2007 at 3:52 PM
I used to pay $128/month as a contractor for insurance, now I pay $6.00 a month for medical, free dental, free vision as a full time employee. I have no interest in hearing what Moore has to say.
Theworldisnotenough on June 23, 2007 at 3:56 PM
Sadly, the left does not have a monopoly on eating their own.

It is ironic that Mr. Rotundus Maximus preaches at us. Imagine the implications of being that big, health aside, to the environment. When will he and Al Gore team up?
Capitalist Infidel, don’t let that little secret out to Seixon – you will promptly be called a liar and told that Norway is socialist perfection, combined with a smidgeon of capitalism.
Ah Mr. Steyn, the adorable uniquely sane Mr. Steyn. How fortuante to know he lives among us.
Entelechy on June 23, 2007 at 4:04 PM
What I meant by that is that the left has a handful of special interest groups that are always stepping on each others toes. But we are not immune to fringe groups. The anarcho-capiltalists and Libertarians are laying in wait as the country swings to the right. Ron Pauls internet popularity is just a precursor.
Theworldisnotenough on June 23, 2007 at 4:17 PM
Never heard of them but sounds like a cool group!
Capitalist Infidel on June 23, 2007 at 4:21 PM
India is doing a land-office business by providing *gasp* private pay medical procedures to British who cannot wait 25,000 years for their surgery. Enterprising Indian hospitals are offering medical package deals, airfair, lodging, surgery. They have clients, lots of them.
What does Michael Moore have to say about US doctors treating Canadian and SE Asian Indians treating Brits? Seems the real elephant in the room is the huge fact that private health care systems are the crutch the state-run systems pretend they aren’t using.
naliaka on June 23, 2007 at 4:42 PM
I beg to differ that vegetarians live about 8 years longer. Or weigh less. I know plenty of fat vegetarians. They load up on stuff like cheese pizza.
bmac on June 23, 2007 at 4:55 PM
Every time I hear about PETA it makes me want to eat a fat, juicy, red steak. Not that I need an excuse to eat freashly grilled meat but PETA makes me want it that much more!
Yakko77 on June 23, 2007 at 5:00 PM
Pork producers, however, love the guy.
Tons.
profitsbeard on June 23, 2007 at 5:41 PM
I wouldn’t defend PETA if they offered me a lifetime subscription to the Steak-of-the-Month club (not as if they would).
The statement they make in their letter to Moore is not inappropriate. I’m as amazed as AP at their mention of a personal responsibility angle, but it is valid. When did we forget that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?
Bad eating choices means bad health results, it’s a pretty simple equation. And this is a small piece of the soc*alized health care puzzle that I despise. my family’s burden on the “health care system” is almost nil, but my premiums help cover those that have allowed themselves to develop multiple conditions and require numerous specialists and dozens of medications to stay functional.
A system completely disconnected from all forms of government, and completely pay-as-you-go, would quickly become the least expensive and most efficient health care system on earth. It would also force people to take that personal responsibility that they are so able to shun because my premiums help cover their costs.

Question for PETA.
If you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant, what do you do?
BacaDog on June 23, 2007 at 6:01 PM
A year in Gitmo would finish this guy for market.
pat on June 23, 2007 at 7:03 PM
Answer: if both are located where PETA wish to open a new “chapter”, PETA will immediately place both animal and plant in their huge euthanasia freezer located at PETA HQ, and then issue a press release lauding how PETA “took immediate action to preserve these endangered creatures for the enjoyment of future generations”.

I know how that fat evil POS can lose weight immediately, but if I Express my Thoughts I’ll get shunned and banned, etc
Still, a Radical Fat-ectomy would work wonders for Elephant Leftie

Yeah, and you can see your, um, navel without having to look in the mirror.
smellthecoffee on June 24, 2007 at 12:05 AM
I can’t stand Moore, and he is a fat tub, but c’mon PETA…
If this isn’t an iffy claim, I don’t know what is. I know a few FAT vegetarians. (A lot of cheese involved.)
Further, there are sooo many variables involved that the claim could never be proven.
Bottom line: Homo sapiens started eating fruits, veggies, (nuts, berries, etc.) ’cause they couldn’t manage to kill something that day!
(BTW: I love fruits and vegetables.)

There’s just “Moore” of him to love…or despise…
This guy is going to be a burden on our health-care system for sure someday.

the government’s shoddy healthcare system
cognative dissonence…

Pavement Pizza:
Vomit on the pavement, typically found on main street on a Sunday morning.
“Nobby finished his night off with a tasty kebab and a pavement pizza”
Guardian on June 24, 2007 at 2:30 PM
“Janos Hunyadi on June 23, 2007 at 10:24 PM”-I’ll take my chances on banning, friend. If Moore can go to Cuba for the heath care, I suggest he go to Somalia for the weight loss plan. Mike, check back in with us in about 37 years and let us know how the ol’ diet is working.
Doug on June 24, 2007 at 3:03 PM
I think PETA bit off more than they can chew.
right2bright on June 24, 2007 at 3:37 PM
No, no, Michael! Don’t believe these charlatans! Your problem is too little bacon fat, too little refined flour, and not enough carbs! Your arteries are soft and tender, and you must take immediate steps to harden them.
morganfrost on June 24, 2007 at 3:49 PM
As a carnivore like me, I’m sure Mr. Moore will only recognize the plant-eating PETA activists for what they are: a food source.
corbettw on June 24, 2007 at 6:29 PM
HaHa!
RedCrow on June 24, 2007 at 11:48 PM
Hooboy. A screwball ‘animal rights’ group versus a (in)famous political activist? The fur could really fly on this one.
Oh – and a personal note for PETA: there is plenty of room for all the creatures of the Earth…right next to the corn and mashed potatoes.
