OT alert. It isn’t that conservatives don’t believe in the fossil record, we just reject the baloney that it proves what the priests of secularism claim it proves.

Wait for version 2. Version 1 is going to sell on hype at first and drop off when many realize that while some of its features are cool there are simply too many other now-standard features completely missing.

I’m a die-hard gadget freak, but I hate wasting money, so have disciplined myself to a strict code. Never buy the new toy. Wait until it is either 15 months old (most bugs addressed/corrected) or falls in price more than 60% from its initial release.

What they aren’t telling you:

Besides the one carrier problem. It doesn’t do Instant Messaging–well, it has an Apple proprietary version that can only talk to other iPhones–except ATT won’t be carrying that initially.

It doesn’t do MMS messaging either. Or any of the other standard communication features other phones have had for years.

But hey, you can browse the Web sideways! Just like HTC started doing 2 years ago! Wow, Apple is innovative!

The difference between the iPhone demo and the Microsoft Cambridge demo really does give a hint of truth to those “I’m a PC…and I’m a Mac” ads.

Eventually they’ll be implants, and then the accidental unification of silica-based quasi-intelligence by a feedback-loop glitch/mutation (the origin of consciousness in humans?) will take over those so endowed.

The touch screen navigation is very cool. Having to “hunt and peck” to type something into a field on the screen is not. Only 8GB for the iPod function will not make me give up my current mp3 player. Touch screen technology is very cool though. I’ll wait for more applications.

I’m in awe…but will never be able to afford it. JUST bought the 30 gig Video iPod 3 months ago. And THAT was a big deal for me, since I got my 20 gig for free 2 years ago (yes, for FREE…on one of those Free iPod sites!)

Ironically, Apple first approached Verizon according to USA Today:

Verizon Wireless, the No. 2 U.S. cellphone carrier, passed on the chance to be the exclusive distributor of the iPhone almost two years ago, balking at Apple's rich financial terms and other demands. Among other things, Apple wanted a percentage of the monthly cellphone fees, say over how and where iPhones could be sold and control of the relationship with iPhone customers, said Jim Gerace, a Verizon Wireless vice president. "We said no. We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn't reach a deal that was mutually beneficial."

There's more, but it seems that Apple wouldn't allow Verizon's other distributors (Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc.) sell the product, only Apple and the main Verizon stores. Apple simply wanted ultimate control (including customer service) which Verizon said no to. Note: You know AP, you could always settle for an OQO.

I remember when the iPod first came out I was the only of 2 people I knew who had one. And now they’re everywhere. I suspect the iPhone will be everywhere, but only due to the hype. I’m betting only the truly nerdy (of which, I am) will really appreciate it.
