My civics knowledge is a little rusty, but isn’t it their job to do what we, not they, think is right for us?

It’s a fine distinction, but it’s the difference between the Senate and the House. House representatives fit your statement above more directly, yes. Senators are expected to take a broader view (State-wide, intra-state, and federal) in their deliberations and decision-making. That’s why they treasure the ‘appearance’ of getting along together, sometimes even above doing what they think is right. That’s why St. John praises Teddy Kennedy, why Mel Martinez refers on the floor to his ‘good friend Charles Schumer’, when you know they don’t mean a word of it. Well, maybe McCain means it.

All that is why it matters so very much more who we elect as legislators than President, apart from judicial and executive nominations. Too often, we vote for whom we think will get our district the most stuff, instead of someone who will serve with a conscience. And thus, we get the government we deserve.

On a serious note, getting away from our oil-dependency w/b a good thing. This c/b separated from the global warming fairy tales. It is a sane subject to tackle by itself.
