Celebrity moron totes trendy Maoist handbag in Peru, home of the Shining Path

A perfect storm of ignorance, arrogance, and mindlessly revisionist radical chic touches down in Machu Picchu.
Actress Cameron Diaz appears to have committed a major fashion faux pas in Peru. The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated “Shrek” films may have inadvertently offended Peruvians who suffered decades of violence from a Maoist guerrilla insurgency by touring here Friday with a bag emblazoned with one of Mao Zedong’s favorite political slogans.
While explored the Inca city of Machu Picchu high in Peru’s Andes, Diaz wore over her shoulder an olive green messenger bag emblazoned with a red star and the words “Serve the People” printed in Chinese on the flap, perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao’s most famous political slogan.
While the bags are marketed as trendy fashion accessories in some world capitals, the phrase has particular resonance in Peru, where the Maoist Shining Path insurgency brought Peru to edge of chaos in the 1980s and early 1990s with a campaign of massacres, assassinations and bombings.
Nearly 70,000 people were killed during the insurgency.
Not for a moment do I think she knew who the Shining Path was. Your exit question: Now that she knows, and in light of what she’s said before about the pastoral idyll that is Third World poverty, does she care?

are we sure that was accidental considering how much celebrities love commies?
Defector01 on June 22, 2007 at 10:49 PM
No. She’s a moron.
Martin on June 22, 2007 at 10:49 PM
Making the broad assumption that she actually has a brain, she wouldn’t care what the bag says or represents as long as it looks cool and costs much more than it is worth.
DAT60A3 on June 22, 2007 at 10:51 PM
She will need help with the spin and explanation, but as for a learning experience, she is as vapid as they come, she will not gain one iota of knowledge from this IMHO.
bbz123 on June 22, 2007 at 10:51 PM
She is perhaps the biggest moron in Los Angeles County which puts her in the running for biggest moron worldwide.
Metro on June 22, 2007 at 10:52 PM
I’m pretty sure when she bought it, she asked someone “What do these characters mean?” and they replied “Serve the People.” Being the celebrity retard that she is (Hollywood has that effect on the brain), she undoubtedly thought the message to be profound and by wearing it proudly, she could make a subtle social statement. This, you see, is how actors think. I know this because my best friend in the whole world is an actor in remission.
Mindcrime on June 22, 2007 at 10:53 PM
It’s a tough call: Celebrities do love commies, yet to do so requires a certain amount – not much, but a certain amount – of brain cell activity which in this case may be lacking.
Regardless, it is amazing how the left gets all fired up over any politically incorrect symbolism yet they are so callous about the sufferiung under leftist ideology.
Coyote D. on June 22, 2007 at 10:56 PM
I’ll bet she paid a ridicules amount of money for that bag, do you really think she would let some low life 3rd world Peruvian persons feelings get in the way of her right to display her “style.”
abinitioadinfinitum on June 22, 2007 at 11:01 PM
You can bet Cameron Diaz lives in her own little tray sheek world that doesn’t require too much in the way of discernibility or genuine empathy.
Speakup on June 22, 2007 at 11:06 PM
See, I always knew it wasn’t going to work out between me and Cameron.
see-dubya on June 22, 2007 at 11:10 PM
I’m willing to bet she has no idea that Mao was a mass murderer, or has even heard of The Shining Path (and if she has, has any idea they ever did anything wrong). And if she were to ever hear of these facts, she likely wouldn’t believe them.
In addition to being as smart as a shoe, she’s thoroughly immersed in the sickest aspect of the Michael Moore-induced utopian mindset: She genuinely believes all things good and equitable emerge from Marxism, while all that’s bad is born of America and the free market. It’s more like a cult mentality than a genuine political perspective.
Blacklake on June 22, 2007 at 11:10 PM
A PR flack will release a statement with a generic “sorry if anyone was offended…Cameron deeply cares about…yada, yada, yada.”
Maybe next trip she could go to Poland with a “Work Will Make You Free” scarf.

Going there next Winter and am FULLY aware of the history of the country.
Perhaps these USEFULL IDIOTS could be given a SHORT history lesson by their “hosts” before they pimp them out for their celebrity? On the other hand, nahhhhhh..too entertaining when they do something this stupid.

Meanwhile, not far away, Mao 2.0.
see-dubya on June 22, 2007 at 11:13 PM
Is it really a “fasion Faux pas” when so many celebrities have embraced Communism as the perfect government for the world?
Mao and Che are trendier than ever today. The hammer and sickle is probably a top ten selling t-shirt symbol. For only $50 I could buy the “Che Club Shirt – Checked With Che And Che Signature.” That’s a bargain!
But seriously, go talk to some of today’s celebs. I’ve certainly had audiences with enough movers and shakers in Hollywood to know the common ideologies running through their tiny tiny brains.
This is no faux pas, she believes in her handbag!

I remember going to one of the big anti-war marches here in Washington, DC and watching all the Communist groups march by toting their banners while the Freeper counter-protestors chanted anti-communist slogans from a park. One of the marchers, a young college kid, stopped. With this truly puzzled and earnest look on his face, he asked almost painfully, “What’s wrong with Communism?” I felt sorry for him because he honestly had no idea. I had to wonder if he had grown up in an airtight chamber somewhere. There really are people out there who have never heard a negative word about Communism, the killer of a hundred million people.

From reading the post you linked, I kind of get the impression that this guy Maddox doesn’t care to much for Cameron D. He Heh ;:- P
abinitioadinfinitum on June 22, 2007 at 11:42 PM
Yeah Tantor, a lot of kids hear about how rotten Hitler was, no one hears about Stalin and Mao, or at least not enough. Of course, that’s true of all history taught in schools, there are so many things that are skipped or not covered enough. They focus on a few events, taught from the same perspective, year after year. There is a reason that kids have low interest in history, they are taught history in the most stale/repetitive manner and it deadens them to it.
Glad I decided not to teach, it would have been too depressing.

Worse than just not knowing how this might be interpreted by Peruvians… does she not know that Mao was the mass murderer that Hitler could have only dreamed of being… I think the last revision put Mao’s numbers at 77 Million killed.
Bonus: I’d like to ask this Gore adoring twit how she got to Peru… Did she ride a bike? No. You know how she got there.

Cameron Diaz would probably say “Let them eat cake.” Ya, I imagine she is clueless (hopefully), but she does even more revolting stuff in her home country.

Ah but Tantor – they don’t teach history in schools anymore. So while you might hear a thing or two about Hitler (who they teach was ultra-conservative) you don’t hear a thing about the 16 million plus killed by stalin, pol-pot, Mao, and the others – a number Hitler would have envied.

Does anyone remember Carmen Diaz’ visit to Oprah Winfrey’s television program during the last presidential elections?
Does anyone remember the words Carmen cried out in desperate warning to all women, encouraging women to vote because, if they did not vote, they could be raped and there is nothing they will be able to do about it?
What a genius!
And all the while Oprah sat there silent, did not correct her, chastise her, or correct her. The women on the program seemed to agree with one another on these strange comments.
Bottom line, Conservative white men = bad; left wing, liberal, feminist democrats = good.

She’s just a typical Democrat Communist. There are a lot of idiots out there, celebrity and non celebrity, that think communism is great. I don’t get how they can not understand just how many people communism has killed, and not understand why so many people risk their lives to get away from communism. If it was so great, why aren’t more people going to live in China or Cuba?? Makes me sick.
StephC on June 23, 2007 at 11:25 AM
She’s also Cuban, which makes this even more egregious. No, she doesn’t care. El Sendero Luminoso tore that country apart and paved the way for the lunatic they have in office now. It’s a shame, Peru’s a beautiful country full of rainforests, archaeological relics, and surf.

I don’t believe it would matter to her if she knew what this meant to the people of Peru. This happened in the 80’s and 90’s, which only means “past” to them and the people should be “over it” by now.
This is no different from the blank stares Hollywood people or Jane Fonda or Sean Penn give when asked about how many hundreds of thousands or even millions of people Saddam killed.

Not trying to be contrary for contrary sake, but I don’t think she deserves more criticism than any other liberal simply because she’s a “celebrity”~she did something dumb, and it gets noticed across the entire world-that’s humiliating.

Two, a number of Shining Path terrorists have recently been re-sentenced and have been released or will be released in a few years. They are unrepentant and this is clearly a sensitive time for Peruvians.

Someone should explain to the Hollywood elite just what their lives would be like if they lived in a true working communist state, operating by the core communist principles laid down by Lenin or Mao or the other “founding fathers” of communism.
No exclusive mansions, cars, clothes, jets, clubs, etc.
No stratospherice salaries. No personal accountants, lawyers, domestic servants, managers, personal assistants, etc
No special reservations at trendy clubs, restaurants, ski resorts, spas, etc
No special treatment or access to sporting events, concerts, shows, movies, plays, etc.
No groupies, no sychophants, no “celebrity” appearances, no “guest” judges, no special interviews, etc.
And on, and on, and on, and . . . .
If they only had a clue what they stood to loose under true communism. They would lose so much more than those of us who are actually standing in the gaps trying to stop communism from destroying mankind, and yet we are the ones they demean, condemn and revile.
Idiots!

I think if these celebs want to be truly “trendy,” they need to be AHEAD of the trends. Perhaps a T-shirt with Saddam or Arafat on it. Come on, get with it, kiddos. Don’t stop with the “old” psychotic leaders, get the New Ones on there.
After all, we know they all meant well. (Yeah, that joke will NEVER get old)
mjk on June 25, 2007 at 2:58 PM
Isn’t that how “trendy” is? In order to be trendy, you have to be ahead of the trends to be trendy. I think I just tied myself in a knot with that reasoning.
mjk on June 25, 2007 at 2:59 PM
With all of these celebrities trying to paint themselves as saints (normally when they’ve had a damaging press), a moronic incident like this had to happen in a politically sensitive area of the world. I’m only surprised it hasn’t happened sooner. But I did think it was going to be Jolie.
Normally the publicity and organisational machine around narcissistic cretins, like Diaz, prevents them from being themselves. I wish all celebrities could be allowed to be themselves. Even more, I wish all celebrities could be allowed to see themselves. I wonder if Diaz is seeing herself right now?

My last thought on this subject –
