Water balloons and a flag.

An Australian production company has apologized to Mexico for a segment of a “Big Brother” reality program that showed people throwing water balloons at the Mexican flag.

Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department on Wednesday sent protest letters to the program and the Australian government, saying the country’s flag had been desecrated on the show that aired June 15.

“I apologize on behalf of the producers of `Big Brother’ for any offense suffered and assure you this will never happen again,” wrote Kris Noble, the managing director of entertainment company Endemol Southern Star, in a letter Thursday to the Mexican Embassy in Australia.

“The segment was intended as a lighthearted tribute to Mexico and its vibrant cultural heritage, which we all admire and enjoy,” the letter stated.

Mexico’s protest letters said that the country’s flag “has a long and proud history and it stands as a powerful symbol that identifies and unites Mexican citizens wherever they live.

That last part is indeed true: The Mexican flag unites Mexicans wherever they live. Take Southern California, for instance. And Houston.

So next May Day all we need to do is arm ourselves with water balloons?

The Mexican flag flys proudly over Mexico city just like in 1847. Oops- my bad that was OUR AMERICAN flag then. Shouldn’t have given the territory back and we wouldn’t be discussing amnesty.

Those Aussies are d**n lucky. Pacific Ocean and all…

Given the ‘Osama’ chanting that Mexico did during the National Anthem during a soccer match and their abuse of Miss USA, they deserve zero sympathy.

Arghhh. I can’t take anymore. Can we have another Rosie thread or something?

Notice they had to add the “wherever they live”. Just to let you know that even though they abandon their beautiful and plentiful country they still love it.

Yet we can’t have the flag displayed in schools or recite the pledge of allegiance. Next, school lunches will stop serving sloppy joes for “enter thought here”

Isn’t the majority of Mexico’s economy from money sent there by Mexicans working in the U.S.?

a long and proud history

Of what, exactly? I mean, seriously–what has Mexico ever done to be proud of? I’d honestly like to know. Being synonymous with political corruption is not a legacy that I’d be bragging on, myself. And all that Aztec crap is just stolen glory to hide the fact that they’ve accomplished next to nothing on their own. How many pyramids have you built lately, Felipe?

It seems to me the Mexicans actually have something they can be danged proud of.

They are the only people to have successfully invaded the U.S. (at least for now – let’s hope that changes soon).

I’m going to hold my breath and wait for Mexico to apologize for insulting us in a myriad of ways.

It has the long proud history of being the toliet bowl of North America and the only ones to blame for it is themselves.

They make some good Tequila? Other than that, I can’t think of that. Oh, I remember. They helped add the great line in the Marine Corp Hymn.

robblefarian on June 22, 2007 at 5:24 PM

Heh. Okay, maybe I should clarify the question a little, because I’d like to know what Mexico as a country has accomplished. There are plenty of things, like nachos, or tequila, that I like that come from Mexico, and I have no problem with ordinary Mexicans as long as they don’t come here illegally. But this proud history their flag is supposed to represent, that’s what I’m curious about.

ReubenJCogburn on June 22, 2007 at 6:00 PM

Mexico shouldn’t complain, the water in the balloons was probably drinkable.

infidel4life on June 22, 2007 at 8:55 PM

Defecate on the American flag = very little response.
Water balloon the Mexican flag = international incident.

popular quote/
They have even tried to call everyone else EUROPEAN yet they speak Spanish. The Spaniards killed all of the NATIVE indians ( mayans/incas etc) yet they try to call themselves ‘natives’….
Exactly what are they proud of …THEFT?
