[...] It looks like most were willing to brave the turgid Greenwaldian screed that’s sure to follow and showed up anyway. This is really what the fightin’ nutroots is aiming for when they mau-mau the exceedingly leftist media for not being leftist enough: they don’t just want the coverage tilted further left, they want the press on a war footing so belligerent as to make attendance at dopey ribbon-cutting ceremonies with the president tantamount to fraternizing with the enemy. Ironically, it ends up proving the truth of their own droning about the media’s spinelessness. Queasiness about confronting the government means you need a new profession; queasiness about being named “Wanker of the Day” means you need psychological help. [...]

[...] Why? Because talk radio’s been spectacularly effective in drumming up opposition to the amnesty bill — so much so that Jon Kyl’s trying to integrate Hugh Hewitt’s suggestions into the legislation. If the nutroots had managed the sort of grassroots uprising that Limbaugh et al. have pulled here, Harry Reid would be posting sycophantic YouTube videos of himself singing hosannas to “people-powered politics.” Since it comes from the right, Feinstein naturally wants to stomp it. But fine. If the left is stupid enough to try to force ideological balance on broadcast media, I’m sure there are a few smart conservative lawyers who’d be only too happy to “work within the paradigm,” as it were. We’ll start here, with “fairness” within broadcast news divisions. Next will be trying to extend the principle to non-broadcast media like, oh, for instance, the Internet. That’d be tricky for various reasons but if, like Feinstein, you “believe in fairness,” why let nitpicking like the First Amendment kill the dream? [...]

[...] Are you now waiting for the Left to propose the same thing for the newspaper or broadcast TV media as well? Hold not thy breath. A “Fairness Doctrine” that covers more than just radio? That’ll never happen, because those other outlets generally lean left.
<blockquote>I’m not debating that some people in the news are biased, what I am debating is that journalists can report fairly on issues while maintaining a political opinion like everyone else in the country.

Sure, in theory. Support your open-minded view of the objectivity and talent of journalists by citing all of the 90+% conservative-staffed news sources that you regularly go to for information which you then receive with little skepticism.

<blockquote>I’m not touching this conspiracy theory with a 10 foot pole, but I will agree that news is being selected–as it always has been, but consider the editors position. Reporting on genocide is millions of times more important than reporting on whatever slight progress is happening in southern Sudan, and you couldn’t possibly know the editors ulterior motives (unless you have proof of that too).

Nonfactor on June 22, 2007 at 12:32 AM</blockquote>
So, why wasn't 10 years of Northern Agression against the South reported in the MSM? When the Northerner's were fought to a draw, they focussed their attention to Darfur.
How would I know that reporters sitting on a barge on the Nile River accompanying women and children being resettled in their traditional areas, following Africa's biggest cattle drive in history, happen to answer to a direct question that their editors don't print stories unless they are Darfur? Hmm? I either made it up from whole cloth or got it straight from someone who was there and heard it. Which is the more likely answer if I am going to have the cheek to print that statement on a national blog? Which, if I am not being truthful, could come back to haunt me later? If the reporters who are selling these stories are saying the editors buy only Darfur, what's going on here? Selection of the news. If the editors were so all fired up about genocide, they would have been just as attentive to Southern Sudan's millions being killed, enslaved and forcibly converted to Islam ...OH! Christians!
Are you aware that the Government of Sudan just threatened to cut off the world's major supply of gum arabica, an essential ingrediant in the formulation of Coca-Cola and soft drinks? Khartoum is threating disrupting the world's supply of Coke.
Are you also aware that the Southern Sudanese countered this threat immediately with the promise to insure that America would continue to be provided with what they smoothly renamed, gum AFRICA?

If you know nothing about a subject, have the grace to acknowledge you don't know instead of insinuating the person is making it up. I don't comment on the current state of Costa Rican high tech investment, and ten million other subjects I don't know anything about, but if someone comes on the board and says they are familiar with it, I'll consider fairly what they say, EVEN if it upsets my pre-conceived views. You learn a lot more that way. It's called "open-minded."

Just read or listen to most so-called "journalists" in the MSM and you would have to be pretty much brain dead to not be able to figure out where their political allegiance lies.
If they are actually <em>trying</em> to hide it they are pretty pathetic at it.

<blockquote>The J schools openly promote “change the world.”</blockquote>
Really? I assume you can back this statement up, and then somehow relate it to the donations of a particular person affecting their reporting of certain issues. I'm not debating that some people in the news are biased, what I am debating is that journalists can report fairly on issues while maintaining a political opinion like everyone else in the country.
<blockquote>News is being selected - Darfur is only being used as a lever to pry US troops out of Iraq, Southern Sudan, which also suffered horrendous years of ethinic cleansing and genocide, is not perceived as useful to that purpose, hence no coverage.

[...] Ace Gets into it, over the recent reporting as regards to political donations from the various newsrooms. Powerline does, too, as do National Review, CBS News, The Jawa Report, Hot Air, Redstate, NewsBusters.org, michellemalkin.com, Michael P.F. van der Galiën and JammieWearingFool . As an example of some of the chatter, Ace mentions that MSNBC notes loudly beginning of $5,000.00 to a Republican political action committee by somebody working for Bill O’Reilly, but says nothing about the idea that even at Fox most of the journalists giving money , give to Democrats. I mentioned burning Goldberg, last evening, because of the new book he’s got out. I’m still reading one of the old ones.. “Arrogance”… or, more correctly, re- reading it. Among the many other points that he makes in that book is that those liberals in the media, are not so much being dishonest with us, as they are being dishonest with themselves. They consider themselves to be “Centrist”. I know it sounds bizarre, but there it is. They consider themselves to be a political center of the country. On that basis, anything they spew out that supports leftism, cannot possibly be biased. At least, in their mind. In the end, freedom of the press, as was famously stated years ago, is only able to be exercised by those who own one. Which, perhaps, is why the mainstream media has such a problem with web sites like this one. Think about it. In reality, Having those other voices, is the only chance at balance the “press” as a whole, ever has. Limbaugh likes to say that he is balance. Know what? He’s right. So is Neal Boortz, Roger Hedgecock, Glenn Beck and a host of others. And so is the rightosphere. So, when the democrat Ron Congress, starts making loud noises about controlling the one sided voice of talk radio, what they’re really trying to do is remove the only chance of balance the media ever had. And don’t think for a minute, that the Internet will not also be so regulated, once talk radio is out of the way. [...]

<em>The mistake the left makes is thinking that Bill O and H&C are unbiased reporters.</em>

Thinking that those guys are even "news" when they are obviously "commentary", is an even larger mistake.
