[...] There’s actually some dispute over that, with the AP apparently erroneously reporting last week that the White House was set to close Gitmo. So this story retrenches that bad one and ups the ante. But no matter; the AP still hasn’t corrected its Hurriya reporting of last year. Why would it correct a story from last week?
There won't be any punishment at the polls when the Immigration Bill fails. That's why it will fail.

It has vocal, motivated opponents, and totally discredited proponents.

They've tried to fuck us, and they've failed.

I suspect the RNC is already seeing the fundraising environment that insulting and/or ignoring the base creates. I have sent three solicitations back in the past two weeks with.....advice...in lieu of actual money.

I mentioned that I was a Republican because I was conservative, not the other way round.

What happened? For almost 6 straight years “Impeach Bush” was a mantra. Now they’re all silent.

Amnesty. He's giving them millions of new voters and signing the death warrant of the GOP. And if amnesty doesn't go through, him and the GOP will take all the punishment at the polls. It's a win-win for them. Impeachment might rouse some in the public to defend him and they may suffer for it at the polls. Better to let his own base make the party suffer in general for what he's pulling with the amnesty.

The advisers will consider a new proposal to shut the center and transfer detainees to one or more Defense Department facilities, including the maximum security military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where they could face trial, said the officials.

Gee, I bet that makes everyone in the Kansas City metropolitan area feel comfortable.

What an idiotic move! Why would they even consider transporting these hardcore terrorists from a secure prison in Cuba into our cities and communities? If Bush does this, his approval rating will even go lower because nobody will support him.

This is outrageous. He is considering giving these foreign terrorists Constitutional rights and trying them in the U.S.. All because his liberal advisers are more worried about what foreigners think of us than doing the thing best for America.

I agree with Tantor.

The enemy combatants should be tried. Those who are convicted should remain at Gitmo.

Gitmo should close just like Spandau prison closed, when the last Nazi prisoner died.

The question of closing Gitmo comes down to this: What do you do with the people there?

Obviously you aren't going to let them go - although setting them loose in Times Square has it's own perverse attraction...

I can't imagine that he'd close it. At some point the Dem candidates or the Dem nominee will have to explain what they plan to do with the detainees after they close Gitmo on 1/20/2009 - release them? pardons? trials in criminal court? military tribunals? Why would Bush let them off the hook so easily? Oh wait, he probably promised Ted Kennedy that he would close Gitmo if Kennedy would go against his better judgment and support the amnesty.

Heh, if he closes it I wonder if I can unload those last couple hundred Gitmo cookbooks... maybe they'll be collectible or something. (Yeah, right...) Seriously, I don't know how he can close it, when he's done so much to justify keeping it open. Amnesty, he's been for since Day One and never tried to hide it. This isn't the same at all.

Gitmo should close just like Spandau prison closed, when the last Nazi prisoner died. We should not be driven by the lies of our Muslim enemies abroad nor those of the partisans at home who seek to gain power at the nation's expense.

Closing Gitmo does not solve the problem but rather kicks the problem further down the road. When we give in to slander of ill treatment at Gitmo, it won't get better at Leavenworth. If anything, it will encourage the enemies of America on to new and greater fabrications.

Worse yet, it does improve the legal position of the terrorist prisoners whose supporters can more effectively lobby for their release.

What's forgotten in this issue is that the terrorists placed themselves outside established law, not America. Those who support the prisoners are trying to move the venue for their legal processing from international law concerning the conduct of war, where the terrorists suffer great disadvantage, to the domestic law of the US, where terrorists enjoy enormous advantages and acquire many rights. Basically, the supporters of the terrorists are shopping for the best courts to free these monsters so that they can do more evil.

His wife, Laura, and mother, Barbara, along with Rice and longtime adviser Karen Hughes, head of the public diplomacy office at the State Department, have told him that Guantanamo is a blot on the U.S. record abroad, particularly in the Muslim world and among European allies...

Earlier this month, former Secretary of State Colin Powell called for the immediate closure of the prison, saying it posed an untenable foreign policy risk and was irreparably harming the U.S. image abroad.

I'm soooo moved!

I think the Supreme courts blocking of trials for Gitmo leaves little wiggle room.

I have no problem deporting these bad guys back to afganistan and making them "Disappear"
