Video: “I’ve Got a Crush on Fred Thompson’s Politics”

posted at 2:10 pm on June 20, 2007 by Allahpundit

As you’ll see, the screencap’s misleading. There’s a certain, shall we say, “Brokeback” quality to the clip, although it’s mitigated by the rockabilly jauntiness and the, er, clumsy insertion of the word “politics” in the lyrics to remind the listener that it’s not ol’ Fred himself on whom the crush is being had.

Nice to see the FredHeads reaching out to the Log Cabin Republicans, though. It’s high time we welcomed them into the club.

Fred! The last hope. The best hope. For humanity. Save the Republic. Fred!

(is it obvious I’m wearing thin of the will he, won’t he?)

lorien1973 on June 20, 2007 at 2:16 PM

I’m just wondering which of the male Fred groupies is going to sing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to him at the convention.

It’s a big tent philosophy. Embrace it. Fred! -hearts- disturbing heterosexual attraction.

Maybe she can borrow Rudy’s dress for the occasion.

Hollowpoint on June 20, 2007 at 2:27 PM

Wish they hadn’t chosen rockabilly style and cowboy boots. Just reinforces the meme that Fred only appeals to the southern hick whittlin’ set.

Good point.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 2:27 PM

Struck me a lot more as appealing to the mountain west than the south. Looked like a couple of boys from Wyoming putting this together between rodeos. :)

JadeNYU on June 20, 2007 at 2:30 PM

If southerners (and I am one) “own” Fred too strongly at the outset–easy to do given his down-home southern persona–it will be more difficult for him to widen his appeal in the north and east. This is one of the reasons I still think Rudy’s probably more electable in the general. I do like Fred’s politics, though. A lot.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 2:32 PM

Looked like Arizona or New Mexico to me. Are there cacti in Wyoming?

aero on June 20, 2007 at 2:32 PM

I didn’t find it very “Brokeback” — more Viking-esque.

HEY! I resemble that remark!

Catseye on June 20, 2007 at 2:35 PM

That was painful. I’m all for the grassroots politics and all but at some point is bound to plunge into amateur hour. That was an example of amateur hour right there and lets hope not too many people are exposed to that because I can hear the nation-wide cringing already.

Zetterson on June 20, 2007 at 2:36 PM

Awww, ya had to throw your love for “Brokeback” into the equation.
What is it with you’re obsession with “Brokeback” anyway?

The crush is on Fred’s politics dude! As you say in the post.
I’ll agree the Bob Dylan-eques flash cards is not original, but I’m buying the message and rockabilly isn’t so bad.

I’ll be the first “groupie” to sing Happy Birthday to any politician that supports these politics. Amen!

Ohhh… yer right… should have chosen an easy listening Pop format, sung by a Canadian… ohhhh… wait… someone else already did that….

Romeo13 on June 20, 2007 at 2:39 PM

In my humble opinion I think what the song needed was a little Mini-Mitt dancing around the cacti in the background.

I don’t know. It’s honest.
I mean, Fred!s accent doesn’t do much to help get him past that stereotype either… so why hide it?

Us hicks can love America and still believe in fighting for the liberty of even the most left among us.

Catseye on June 20, 2007 at 2:35 PM

Heh. Sorry, Catseye. As I said, I’m a southerner, too. I’m just looking ahead to the general election. If Fred gets the nomination, we need the northeasterners to be able to embrace him. We all know they have a hard time doing that if the level of perceived “hickness” is too high–in the candidate himself or in the supporters who are associated with him.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 2:40 PM

Allah, there was only a minor ‘Brokeback’ quality to the vid. Mostly, it was pretty damn good.

PRCalDude on June 20, 2007 at 2:41 PM

Not too bad in an armadillo kinda way.

But, it will be a real tribute only when Junior Brown pipes in….

Or maybe They Might be Giants.

How ’bout it, boys?

I don’t know. It’s honest.
I mean, Fred!s accent doesn’t do much to help get him past that stereotype either… so why hide it?
unamused on June 20, 2007 at 2:40 PM

I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with rockabilly music or the sentiment being expressed in the song. I’m also not saying there’s anything wrong with Fred being from the south, southerners in general, or our perceived “hickness.” I’m just saying that too much of this risks putting off our northeastern brethren, and we don’t want that if Fred becomes our nominee.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 2:46 PM

I’m a straight out Northerner/Midwesterner and I like the “Americana” quality of the song. Put it to an 8 or 12 bar blues track and I might like it a little more, but it was a good effort.

mesablue on June 20, 2007 at 2:50 PM

Here’s a Boston guy, no hat, no cow pattie stained boots,I’m a Fred Head.

I’d have preferred he didn’t flash the 9-11 sign at the end, it took an original, fresh ad and made it seem kinda…packaged.

Lest I forget, the brunette in the salmon colored dress,…..Haaawt!

Exit question: Does this mean Fred’s embraced his status as the Messiah?

Yep. freds? buying into his own BS. But that’s typical of actors. It appears that the same mentality that worships other actors has infiltrated the conservative movement. This guy is not whoever he played on some TV show he was on, yet I have actually had supporters try to convince me that he was actually playing himself! hahaha!

Did you see where he bragged on his poll numbers AGAIN? What a goof. He actually thinks his numbers mean that he has been properly vetted and has come out on top.

These types of videos and the love fest for fred? will go the way of the Dodo the minute he opens his mouth in a debate. Really, does anyone, after seeing freds? dismal performances with Leno, Robinson, and Policy Exchange that he will do anything but bomb out in a real debate where he can’t have his notes?

Save your money you fred?heads. Or at least make sure you can get your money back.

Right. And that meme is wrong because…?

Enrique on June 20, 2007 at 2:51 PM

We need it to be wrong if Fred becomes the Republican nominee. Otherwise, regardless of how fantastic his conservative credentials are, Fred will have a very hard time winning the general if non-southerners can’t or won’t get behind him. As much as I prefer Fred’s politics to Rudy’s, it’s things like this that keep me convinced that Rudy has the much better shot at winning the general election than Fred does. I could vote for either one in the general. But I’m a southerner.

You are saying that northerners are elitist jerks?….funny I go by someones politics…I could care less where they are from.

EnochCain on June 20, 2007 at 3:02 PM

Struck me a lot more as appealing to the mountain west than the south.

It looked more southwest to me. The Saguaro cactus is native to Arizona and the two border patrol agents, I believe, were from that area also.

But it was definitely ghey-ish.

csdeven on June 20, 2007 at 3:03 PM

BeyondTheNews summed it up to perfection. Just be yourself, wherever you’re from and however you speak, and get on with addressing the main challenges of the country and the world.

Can we please stop the efforts by would-be Presidents of the United States to “humanize” themselves. It’s getting embarrassing. Hillary’s latest effort may be appropriate if she was running for senior class president of her high school, but not when she’s campaigning to be leader of the free world.

The world today is a very serious place. While Hillary is picking campaign songs and making adolescent YouTube videos, militant Islamic terrorists continue their war against the West. And they said Bush was living in a bubble!

Entelechy on June 20, 2007 at 3:07 PM

You are saying that northerners are elitist jerks?

EnochCain on June 20, 2007 at 3:02 PM

Yes, I guess I am. :-) But I’m saying it in a clinical, analytical way–not personal or emotional. Just an observation based on many years of watching politics. In my experience, northeasterners have a particularly hard time embracing candidates who are overtly southern in their mannerisms and predilections. Witness the open scorn representatives of the MSM display during the times they must follow Bush to Hickville Crawford and take pictures of him in his cowboy boots and cowboy hat doing manual labor on his ranch.

I do acknowledge, though, that southerners and westerners have also categorically rejected northeastern elitist candidates just as strongly.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 3:09 PM

Entelechy on June 20, 2007 at 3:07 PM

American Idol. I can’t blame Hillary for trying to appeal to the morons who spend their lives living through other peoples experiences.

csdeven on June 20, 2007 at 3:11 PM

I do acknowledge, though, that southerners and westerners have also categorically rejected northeastern elitist candidates just as strongly.

Yeah. Reagan -never- won a southern state. Neither did Bush. Last time I checked Bush is from a western state. So is cheney, right?

NE candidates are normally rejected in the south because of their politics, not because of where they are from.

lorien1973 on June 20, 2007 at 3:13 PM

You are saying that northerners are elitist jerks?

EnochCain on June 20, 2007 at 3:02 PM

To extend my comments on this–I think that stuff like this video gives the largely elitist and non-southern MSM fodder that will help them solidify the meme that Fred ONLY appeals to southerners. So, though there are plenty of people like you in the north who are NOT elitist anti-southern jerks and who would be happy to vote for Fred, the damage can be done nonetheless if it becomes accepted by too many people in the northern states that Fred is “owned” by the south. (I’m talking mostly about so-called “moderates” and independents who won’t decide until the day before the election who they’ll vote for or if they’ll vote at all.)

aero on June 20, 2007 at 3:17 PM

I agree with aero. As a Mass guy I can say straight up that elitist jerk is not an innacurate label for the Northeast. Its no wonder why its a blue area on the election map. And aero’s concerns about Fred? are legitimate.

lorien1973 on June 20, 2007 at 3:13 PM

I’m just saying that I know the regional prejudice goes both ways. It’s not just northerners who at times reject southern candidates for being “too southern”–we southerners do it because candidates are “too northern” for us as well. You know–the feeling that a candidate doesn’t “get” you because he or she has never lived in the “heartland”? I agree that it’s primarily the candidates’ politics on which thinking voters ultimately base their final decisions. But I’m referring to those voters who are mostly disengaged from politics who are more likely to make their decisions based on a candidate wearing a bad suit or being from the south as what their policies and ideas are.

Are you saying that there is not a significant chunk of voters who are strongly influenced by appearance, accent, regionalism, etc? Are you saying you don’t think there is a significant percentage of northerners who perceive a strong southern accent as evidence of mental deficiency or a lack of worldliness? If so, I would respectfully submit that you are wrong.

By the way, when I refer to “southerners,” I’m including the southwest. You said Bush is from the west, which I suppose is true. But he’s also from the south. He’s from Texas, and I think we all agree Texas is a southern state. Bush acts far less southern than Fred does, and yet the media has been pounding him for his southern-ness since before he was president. The guy wears cowboy boots to formal occasions. I think he qualifies. ;-)

Ahhh, so you’re just concerned about those voters who actually decide the outcome of elections. Interesting tactic.

Zetterson on June 20, 2007 at 3:22 PM

Indeed. ;-)

I think almost all of us here who identify ourselves as conservative and/or Republican (except perhaps csdeven) will strongly turn out to vote for Fred if he gets the nomination, regardless of who we supported in the primaries. But there aren’t enough of us stalwart conservatives and Republicans to win the election by ourselves. We must have a significant number of swing voters swing our way as well to pull it off. Who are they more likely to swing right for? Rudy or Fred? I wish it were Fred because I like his politics, but I have to realistically say that the wishy-washy voters who decide elections are more likely to swing Republican for Rudy.

That said, I’m waiting to see Fred in action on the campaign trail to make my final decision on the whole thing. His appearance on Leno was weak, but his speech in London was quite impressive. Let’s give him some time and see.

As one who was raised in the northeast and who lives in the midwest, I can tell you that Fred’s appeal already crosses over from the south. The reason is that even though he has that accent, and tosses in the “aw shucks” phraseology from time to time, he is plain spoken.

I can’t TELL you how frustrating it is to hear the other candidates talk like political wind-up toys with their focus-group-tested talking points spilling out of their vacuous heads.

Fred plainly talks about the battle between western civilization and jihadist anarchism, and then he talks plainly about the various options that are available to deal with it.

You’re wrong. I will vote for fred? IN THE PRIMARY if it looks like he can beat the dem front runner.

But I doubt that is gonna happen. fred? is the least qualified and has had the worst interviews of anyone so far.

His speech in London was OK. It was the Q&A that will give you a better idea of how he will handle a debate. He was dismally pathetic. I almost felt sorry for him. If it weren’t so important to get the best person to represent the GOP to the American people, I’d blow these failures off as unimportant.

Laserlawyer on June 20, 2007 at 3:46 PM

I am glad to hear that. And I agree about his plain-spokenness. It is refreshing and appealing. We need an effective communicator in the White House again. Bush’s poor communication skills have been his biggest weakness and his downfall.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 3:54 PM

Reading thru this I am starting to get the feeling that Southerners will never escape Ned Beatty and Deliverance…not as long as all the ‘city folk’ think Southerner is all about regressive genes. Hell 99.9% of us can’t play our DVD players let alone Dueling Banjos. Time for Fred! to come out with a ‘I have a dream’ speech. What the hell makes ‘country’ stupid? Grits? Ain’t? Or is it just because we can’t tell you how to tune in MTV?

Limerick, I love you, and by what you said here, yours, just the way you are. Let go of that “sensitivity”. We all have an accent to someone else.

Limerick on June 20, 2007 at 4:00 PM

Limerick, I’m a southerner, too, so don’t take my comments in this thread as an endorsement of the southern stereotype. And northeasterners, please don’t take my comments as painting all of you with the northern elitist brush, either.

I don’t know why some northeasterners perceive country music and southern accents to be evidence of ignorance or stupidity, but many of them definitely do. Perhaps some of our northeastern friends here have some insight on that that they will share.

Personally, I’m not particularly offended by the southern stereotype. I just roll my eyes or even laugh. But I do have to acknowledge that it’s there and that it has an effect on this country’s politics.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 4:10 PM

Bush’s poor communication skills have been his biggest weakness and his downfall.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 3:54 PM

Yes very much so, and I think its important to note that being a poor communicator does not mean one has the inability to pronounce nuclear properly. Thats part of it but only a small part of it. Its really about what message you choose to convey and when it is you decide to convey it. Its also knowing what NOT to say and when NOT to say it. For example, perhaps following the 9/11 attacks was not the time for the President to preach about how Islam is a religion of peace. That came accross to people who had their eyes open as hollow and overly simplistic and the timing could not have been worse. We really needed someone at that moment to sum up what we are doing as a war against Islamic Jihad and not a war against “terrorism.” That was a mistake that allowed critics to yell and scream about how Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and Sadaam had no ties to Al Qaida, etc. This showed weakness on our part and it was as if we were forced to fight someone who we were afraid to look into the eyes of. Anyways, that is just one example of many.

I does have a whiff of Brokeback about it, but I definitely approve the new trend of using hot girls in campaign ads. Actually makes me watch the damn things once in awhile.

I don’t know that it’s much of an insight, but it’s just as you say – a stereotype. Really, it doesn’t go much beyond that. Now of course, we have our own versions up here – the “Deese” “Dose” “Youse”, etc of the NY/NJ area and the “wicked pissa” stuff around New England doesn’t make anyone sound like a Rhodes scholar.

I lean towards Rudy, but I’m still open to Fred or any of the others (except Ron Paul) persuading me that they’re the one–there’s still plenty of time, and Fred hasn’t even gotten started yet. And don’t forget that Newt might throw his hat in in September and really shake up the debate!

You’re wrong. I will vote for fred? IN THE PRIMARY if it looks like he can beat the dem front runner.

csdeven on June 20, 2007 at 3:51 PM

csdeven,

Out of curiosity–let’s say your opinion of Fred doesn’t change at all, but he manages to win the Republican nomination. What will you do? Will you stay home? Will you campaign for the Democrat? Will you grit your teeth and vote for Fred anyway? Like I said, just curious. You have so little respect for him right now, and if that doesn’t change, I wonder if you can bring yourself to vote for him if it’s between a guy you despise and a Democrat.

I’m Gay for Fred!™

Well, from this Wyoming native, I have a couple of things to say. First off THERE IS NO BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN IN WYOMING. It was filmed in Canada. Second, we do not have those big ole’ honkin’ cactipusses in Wyoming. Ours lay low and bite you when you sit down. Wyoming is mostly desert, but it’s high mountain arid with tons of sagebrush.

As far as Fred’s appeal, regardless of what the Idaho spud (csd) says, it crosses to the West and to the East and to the North. (Oh, okay, I’m just guessing or asserting on the East and North, but that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.)

Tennman on June 20, 2007 at 5:03 PM

I love it…particularly the ending…wow, first Bill Clinton actually making me laugh and now this…I think Fred’s Micheal Moore video and response was more than noticed…

DCJeff on June 20, 2007 at 5:05 PM

By the way, after all this discussion about regionalism, I kinda forgot to comment on the song itself.

I really like how they made it “I’ve got a crush on Fred Thompson’s POLITICS” instead of “I’ve got a crush on Fred Thompson” a la the Obamagirl’s crush on Obama. I’m sure Allah’s right that they did it to decrease the Brokeback overtones of a man singing it. But I love that it’s also a subtle jab at young, vapid left-leaning voters who would vote for someone because they like how he looks in a swimsuit, while conservative voters vote for someone because they like their politics.

Hate to break the thread but I got BIG NEWS Here! I just found out at the annual Family Reunion that my Second Cousins Aunts Grand Daughter is Freds! hottie Wife! I kid you not! Think I can wrangle an invite to the Lincoln Bedroom!?

serenity on June 20, 2007 at 5:26 PM

Looks like it was filmed in the Valley of the Sun….

…In that case, can I get a date with that Fred! Chick?

Tim Burton on June 20, 2007 at 5:28 PM

I much prefer the term New England Bluenoses, elitist jerks is just so harsh.
:)

LakeRuins on June 20, 2007 at 3:31 PM

Heh, I prefer Mass-hole

Alden Pyle on June 20, 2007 at 5:43 PM

That was definitely in Arizona, btw. The saguaro pretty much only grows like that, in America, in Arizona. And I’d put a dollar down that it was Tucson. That looked like the utility road at Sabino Canyon.

Hey, you can start a Six Degrees of Fred Thompson game! Unfortunately, I’m sure I have absolutely no connection whatsoever to Fred or his hottie wife.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 5:50 PM

Now of course, we have our own versions up here – the “Deese” “Dose” “Youse”, etc of the NY/NJ area and the “wicked pissa” stuff around New England doesn’t make anyone sound like a Rhodes scholar.

Farmer_Joe on June 20, 2007 at 4:22 PM

With all the Sanctuary cities we have, ie. Cambridge, Lowell, Orleans, et al, the local accent is more like “¿Me excusa el señor, puede tú darme un poco de dinero?”

Alden Pyle on June 20, 2007 at 5:50 PM

Was that an illegal I saw runnin’ by in the backround?

Less singin’, more catchin’!

profitsbeard on June 20, 2007 at 5:58 PM

Brokeback??? I didn’t see any homoerotic overtones in this. Hmm.

Great bit. We need to fight fire with fire though. More bikini shots!

(I get to meet Newt tonight, woo hoo!)

You are stoked, fund raiser? Buchannon / Newt is my dream ticket, MM. A bit too strong for some pallettes, though.

Sorry honey, Fred? already has a trophy wife — and her boobs are bigger than yours!

Pretty tacky, sonny.

csdeven on June 20, 2007 at 6:45 PM

Good to know, and glad you will. I’m just surprised at how viciously you attack Fred and his supporters when you may very well end up voting for him. For myself, I try not to denigrate any Republicans in primaries, just in case I end up having to put his sign in my yard! Hard to take back all the nasty things you’ve said and convince people he’s your guy at that point. :-) There’s a difference between pointing out weaknesses in a candidate or questioning his suitability and outright disrespecting and denigrating him and his supporters. We can’t afford to eat our own at this point.

aero on June 20, 2007 at 7:22 PM

Nice to see the FredHeads reaching out to the Log Cabin Republicans, though. It’s high time we welcomed them into the club.

As a gay conservative…THANKS! I’ve always felt welcomed here!

SouthernGent on June 20, 2007 at 7:33 PM

That vid had entirely too few shots of the hot brunette

ScottMcC on June 20, 2007 at 7:33 PM

I can’t believe I’m getting caught up in this hype. I just caught myself wondering where I could get a fredgirl t-shirt.

Tanya on June 20, 2007 at 7:35 PM

!!!!

Allahpundit on June 20, 2007 at 7:36 PM

I know!

Tanya on June 20, 2007 at 7:38 PM

I don’t attack his supporters. They think that attacking fred? means I am attacking them. And I am not impressed with those who attack me instead of defend fred?. If you’ll notice that after I shame them for attacking me, they have nothing left to say. So, apparently, the conclusions I have come to about fred? must has some truth or they’d mount a defense.

fred? isn’t one of our own. He disrespects all of us with this waffling BS about when/if he is going to run. I’ve heard all the excuses about contracts and filing dates and financial considerations. All this led up to a supposed date of July 4th. Now I reading that it will probably be the middle of July and maybe as early as the 4th. He doesn’t respect any potential supporters when he does this and I’m disgusted by it.

csdeven on June 20, 2007 at 7:39 PM

Tanya, that shadow art might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Some people are so creative.

I don’t attack his supporters.

You call them “groupies,” implying that they are mindless followers who are easily influenced/manipulated by an empty public image, like rock-star groupies! That’s hardly complimentary!

aero on June 20, 2007 at 8:06 PM

People apply that term to themselves. I use the term groupies generally, and if someone starts ranting, I figure they must be a groupie. But I didn’t apply to them personally. They take that on to themselves. I doubt you would find an instance (or very many if at all) where I called every single supporter of fred? a groupie.

IE….

I support Mitt!. There are people that apply certain traits to Mitt! supporters. Since I do not share that trait, I must not be the person to whom they are referring to. So, I don’t worry about it.

Another example….

People call me a troll because I don’t share their view of fred?. I am not, so I don’t get exercised about it. Those people have finally stopped the troll talk and are now on to other insults. But I doubt I ever pointed to them and insulted them. They took the insult on to themselves.

Like my ol grandpappy used to say….

When you throw a rock at a pack of dogs, the one that yelps is the one that got hit.

Not to be confused with yours truly! Yes I agree very tacky and classless too! New rule the first ladies mammories shall be addressed as the Presidental Ta-Ta’s ie; Did you see the Presidental Ta-Ta’s bustin our of their evening gown. How zat?

sonnyspats1 on June 20, 2007 at 11:47 PM

I am still waiting for Fred! to appear on a real interview.

But his courage aside, I do have to say one thing about Fred!’s fans–they are a lot more creative than half of the political marketing team out there–and I mean both sides!

PS

Hey Allah, is it me or are my comments not going through again? Something wrong with HA site?

Darnell Clayton on June 20, 2007 at 11:50 PM

With all the apathy towards and/or distrust of government right now having a candidate that people can actually get excited about can only be a good thing for getting out the vote.
