Too good to check: Two injured in nuns’ bloody convent turf war

Somewhere Christopher Hitchens pours himself another scotch and chortles sinisterly. Taste the cold steel of Sister Domenica’s blade:

TWO PEOPLE were injured and another two were arrested after scuffles broke out between two rival factions of nuns residing in an Old Calendarist convent in Avdellero late last night.

Nuns and priests from both sides confronted each other after unrest broke out at around 10pm.

The church was covered with blood as nuns and priests from both sides attacked each other using sharp objects…

It has been reported that the convent is segregated, with Archimandrite Sevastianos’ followers occupying certain buildings and the resident nuns staying in others. At nightfall, Sevastianos and his nuns barricade themselves inside the chapel, as a precaution, with friends and relatives of the two groups taking turns at patrolling the premises.

Exit question: Is it time to deploy Muslim peacekeepers from Turkey?

Wow. That image is just… too funny in a very sad way. But, eh. I went to Catholic Day School.

Here’s hoping the Bishops do something. If it is real. I mean, what’s the point of centralized ecclesiastical authority if you can’t stop nun terf wars?

When you’re a Sevastiano, you’re a Sevastiano for life!

Please tell me this is a skit from Monty Python.

Too good to check:

That’s exactly what I thought after clicking through when it was up in the headlines.

Well as usual it’s all about money.

Archimandrite Sevastianos and his supporters say the management of the convent’s finances rightfully belongs to them, according to a will made by the deceased Old Calendarist Bishop of Kiti, Epiphanios, who died nearly two years ago.

The resident nuns, led by Mother Superior Markella, have been living in the main body of the convent for decades and refuse to give up their financial rights.

So it’s about money. What a surprise.

RushBaby on June 20, 2007 at 4:37 PM

Yeah… but read the article carefully, it has nothing to do with religion, even though its priest and nuns involved… its about property rights. One group is trying to take another groups home away from them. What do you suppose would happen if you tried to forcibly take over the Vatican? What do you suppose the Swiss Guard would do, even if you were a group of nuns and priest ?

Nevertheless… this is the first time I’ve EVER heard of a rumble between priest and nuns.

O Brat, ya beat me. *slinks away*

RushBaby on June 20, 2007 at 4:37 PM

Chick fight!!

Hope they weren’t using………nunchucks.

“Never go against the Calendar…”

CP on June 20, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Are these Eastern Rite nuns? “Calendarist”? It’s Greek Orthodox to me, not Roman Catholicism. Just for the record.

Schweggie on June 20, 2007 at 4:41 PM

Yeah, they are Greek Orthodox *smacks self*

Still hope the Bishop does something. What’s the point of a somewhat centralized ecclesiastical authority if it can’t stop nun turf wars?

Keljeck on June 20, 2007 at 4:45 PM

I can’t help but conjure the West Side Story scene between the Jets and the Sharks.

Matticus Finch on June 20, 2007 at 4:46 PM

My mother was a Roman Catholic nun for 14 years. She has a couple of stories to tell. I’ll have to show her this article. It’ll make her day.

The headline on the Tehran Times. Way to go Ladies in Black!

Nun-threatening!

The convent of peace!

I’ve always liked jokes, movies, stories with nuns. Who doesn’t? This one is one of the better ones. Hitchens redeemed, again.

Entelechy on June 20, 2007 at 4:49 PM

Old Calendarists are schismatic Greek Orthodox.

If you’d rather start your own church than submit to ecclesiastical authority, it’s little surprise you’d let yourself come to blows.

Too good to check

Yeah, you just couldn’t resist the Assholiated Press-esque headline, could you?

Brat on June 20, 2007 at 4:56 PM

Bad Nun, Bad Nun
Whatcha goin do nun when the cops come for you
bad nun, bad nun

right2bright on June 20, 2007 at 5:00 PM

Well, I have always knew about nuns being vicious.

After all, I’m Sicilian-Italian-Irish, grew up Roman Catholic, 12 years of Catholic School, 2 years of therapy and 3 years of hard drinkin’. I’m fine now.

Mazztek on June 20, 2007 at 5:01 PM

i live right next door to a school run by nuns, and every once in a while i see two or three nuns bicycling through my backyard. even after all these years, still cracks me up. i don’t know why, but nuns on bikes are just inherently funny. not as funny as a nun fight, though.

What’s black and white and red all over?

profitsbeard on June 20, 2007 at 5:27 PM

A nun with a harpoon through her head.

Did Mother Superior jump the gun?

Kini on June 20, 2007 at 5:36 PM

Kini

Very good reference. I recently learned that John Lennon got the title of the song from a magazine ad.

They’re on a mission from God.

Alden Pyle on June 20, 2007 at 6:44 PM

More anomaly than a generalization. The tabloid premise of this posting and that it is even presented is curious.

Hitchens redeemed, again.

Entelechy on June 20, 2007 at 4:49 PM

Although I whole-heartedly disagree with Hitchens, I would like to think he is intellectually honest enough to distinqush why this neither proves nor disproves any allegations of his.

Attaching Hitchens and alluding that this could correlate his opinion is weak at best. Pure and simple this incident is not a comment on religion but on people not getting along. If this was widespread, the [mis-concieved] relation would have a foot to stand on.

The irony is not lost, however.

Besides, isn’t this the type of stereotypical generalization we criticize the media for doing? That is taking an isolated incident then postulate it as evidence to further a “truth.”

WE ARE ARCHIMANDRITE SEVASTIANOS!

csdeven on June 20, 2007 at 7:00 PM

by Allahpundit………….. Somewhere Christopher Hitchens pours himself another scotch and chortles sinisterly.. The church must deal with the subject of private property rights. They must comply with local laws and avoid being taken advantage of by trustees, for this reason the properties are deeded to the Bishop of the Diocese. That is the practice of the Catholic church. I do not know if the Greek Orthodox has the same internal policies. In any event this is a clear case of either pure greed or ignorance on the part of one party involved. Neither of which would be a legitimate reason for Mr. Hitchens to tie one on, but I guess for an alcoholic its as good a reason as any.
