Gee — and all this time I thought “deportation” was a reference to sending these people to another country, not sending them to another dimension (any place but planet Earth, I guess). Of course, I suppose it’ll only give the “open borders” people more ammunition, viz. deportation EQUALS genocide.

Of course, no one here seems to have mentioned that there is no room for the illegal aliens convicted of DWI in southern California jails because, of course, it might crowd-out Paris Hilton.

Though I hope this guy doesn’t get deported now… he has to pay for his crimes in the US.

What makes me uncomfortable is that the entire illegal population in the US is implicitly being blamed for this horrible accident.

Sorry you are uncomfortable AlexB but you should take the time to read more of the comments above.
Very many of them (including mine) are referring to this specific incident. We are NOT blaming the entire illegal population. We are blaming the illegal(s) specifically involved in this incident. If the illegal driving that car had been deported, as he should have been with previous DWIs, the people in the other car would not be dead.

The article only mentions 1 specific case of the Hispanic drunk driver being illegal. It doesn’t mention stats about how many of the Hispanics were illegal. So as far as we know the Hispanic drunk drivers are legal citizens.

If they are legal, what are you gonna do with them? Better enforcement, tougher laws, etc.

If the stats would’ve said that most of the drunk driving Hispanics are illegal aliens, then I will agree with Patterico.

They should get kicked out of the country not because they drive drunk and kill. They should get kicked out of the country because they’re in the country illegally.

I agree with most of what everyone here’s been saying, but I don’t like it when such incidents are being “politicized” and used to push an agenda, even if the agenda is 100% right. There’s no need for that. I’m just saying that there are countless other perfectly good reasons to push for border enforcement and kicking out illegals… there’s no need to use people’s deaths to do that. It can only be done once the illegals start an organized campaign of drinking, driving, and killing.

The suggestion that 45% of all illegals sneaking in from Mexico are non-Mexican is as ludicrous as stating that 45% of the sectarian violence in Iraq has been committed by Episcopalians.

And of course I agree that America should be a “country of laws”. The sooner the illegals are kicked out and the borders enforced, the better it will be for America.

But we shouldn’t use that incident as an argument. I think it’s kind of cheap actually. Although it is very tempting.

Someone was saying that illegals are disproportionately criminal when compared to middle class college graduates. Of course they are.
But when you compare them to the poor segment of US citizens I’m sure you’ll find very similar numbers.
You’ve got the trailor trash and you’ve got the inner-city gangstas and the various mafias etc. etc.

I thought being illegal subjected anyone to deportation at any time.

Are you sure you’re not confusing this situation with rules for legal alien residents?

How can you say that! It has everything to do with his being illegal.Drunk driving is illegal. Its called contempt for the law and when done in a group is called conspiricy which is also illegalFurthermore when an illegal act is commited in a repetitious manner for profit it then becomes more illegal under the Rico Act! You giving him a pass with claims of one not having to do with the other is flat wrong. That is what the whole objection of the conservative base is about The Rule Of Law!
