Diyala Offensive begins

You first heard about it on Stak Attack back in March:
Now it’s underway.
About 10,000 U.S. soldiers launched an offensive against al-Qaida in Iraq northeast of Baghdad early Tuesday, killing at least 22 insurgents, the U.S. military said.
The raids, dubbed “Operation Arrowhead Ripper,” took place in Baqouba, the capital of Diyala province, and involved air assaults under the cover of darkness, the military said in a statement. The operation was still in its opening stages, it said.
On Monday, military officials said U.S. and Iraqi forces had launched attacks on Baghdad’s northern and southern flanks to clear out Sunni insurgents, al-Qaida fighters and Shiite militiamen who had fled the capital and Anbar during a four-month-old security operation.
A top U.S. military official said American forces were taking advantage of the arrival of the final brigade of 30,000 additional U.S. troops to open concerted attacks.
“We are going into the areas that have been sanctuaries of al-Qaida and other extremists to take them on and weed them out, to help get the areas clear and to really take on al-Qaida,” the senior official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the operation. “Those are areas in the belts around Baghdad, some parts in Anbar province and specifically Diyala province.”
Pronouncements that the surge isn’t working may have been premature.
Update (AP): Meanwhile, in Baghdad, a truck bomb destroys a Shiite mosque and kills 75. As the Times notes, the reason for the Diyala offensive is to stop the sectarian violence by shutting off AQ’s supply of car bombs; the mosque bombing presumably is their reply. If you missed them in April, you’ll absolutely want to revisit these hair-raising Times and WaPo reports, published coincidentally on the same day, on the depth of jihadi entrenchment in Baquba, where the offensive’s begun. The city’s a witch’s brew of “former members of the Saddam Hussein army and paramilitary forces, the Fedayeen; angry and impoverished Sunni men; criminal gangs; Wahhabi Islamists; and foreigners,” writes the Times, suggesting that this may well end up being the nastiest battle of the war. Michael Yon frames the battlefield:
They are ready for us. Giant bombs are buried in the roads. Snipers—real snipers—have chiseled holes in walls so that they can shoot not from roofs or windows, but from deep inside buildings, where we cannot see the flash or hear the shots. They will shoot for our faces and necks. Car bombs are already assembled. Suicide vests are prepared.
Read his whole post, as the conventional analogy here is to the Battle of Fallujah in 2004 and he argues that in fact it was that battle that helped lead us to this point by giving AQ a disgruntled population to shelter them.
We’re taking it to the Mahdi Army now too, although yesterday’s action seems less an organized offensive than a skirmish.

Building a stronger Sharia-based kleptocracy every day.
The entreprise was built on sand (Islamic Constitution) and will slip into a terror haven the moment we leave.
As every Islamic state tends to do when the oranically-approved jihadist mentality kills its way into power.
As it must according to the “prophet” Mohammad’s decree:
Dominate, subjugate, or slaughter the infidels if they resist.
Why we are aiding this lunacy is the fault of the leadership (Bush, Rice, et al) who fail to oppose the real enemy (Islamic theocratic imperialist tyranny) and, instead, promote the delusion of “democracy” among a group (The Ummah) who despise the concept.
As they despise free will, intellectual progress, art and music, human rights, women’s equality, and everything else that makes our future more than a possible prison camp for polygamous slaves.
Islam, as its stands, is incompatible with our aims in this global war.
Until the Koran is reformed of its calls to endless violence and its naked contempt for infidel dogs.
I salute our troops, but spit on their blind, hamstringing political leaders.
profitsbeard on June 19, 2007 at 9:49 AM
Our troops are the best! Not only are they able to close with and kill the enemy, they are capable of the most tender feelings and actions when needed. The story of the orphanage for the special needs kids is a perfect example. Battle hardened members of the 82nd airborne saved 2 dozen children from a horrible existence.
The war is lost Reid? Tell that to the 24 children saved from almost certain death. Tell that to the wife of the soldier who said that this one day in her husbands deployment made all the rest of the days worth it.
Tell us again, you piece of $hit, that the war is lost!

Maybe someone could tie Reid to a stopsign in Baqouba. Y’know, as bait. Just sayin’…

Your comments imply that the USA should do nothing, or should fight a war of religious extermination against muslims. Or did you have another plan?
Everything I’ve read indicates that the troops themselves are the biggest optimists regarding Iraq’s potential for democratic self-rule. I’ll stick with them until they say otherwise.

“? Nope.
Nope.
I’m for extirpating the violent verses from the Koran (Suras 9:5; 9:29-30, ad nauseam), as noted. Muslims are just victims of Mohammad’s madness.
We have to be pressuring them to reform their bloodthirsty dogmas, or nothing will change, fundmentally. The Koran will produce terrorists forever, if unchanged and unchallenged.
And Islam’s arrogance and imperialism needs to be contained, not blindly abetted.
The rules of engagement in this war have been folly from the beginning (by allowing Osama to escape into Pakistan, and bynot crushing Sadr’s Medhi army immediately, etc., etc.)
Either fight to win, with everything you have, or fight more cunningly (using local proxies to battle for your ultimate aims- in Iraq, especially), and not wasting our soldiers in endless “take the hill and then lose the hill” skirmishes with an unclear enemy that we never bring into focus: the jihadists of all stripes, Sunni and Shi’ite.
“
“, in this and Afghanistan’s case, has been foredoomed in both countries by bringing into law a Constitutionally-decreed Islamic state, instead of a secular, America-imposed republic.
We are fighting for what we should be destroying: theocratically-based (future-terrorist-breeding) states.
Because, when it rules, Islam tends to want to expand forever and dominate the infidels everywhere.
Which should be the opposite goal of what we are fighting for.
The troops are being misused.
By leaders who don’t want to name the enemy.
profitsbeard on June 19, 2007 at 10:25 AM
You may be right. Then again maybe if we can kill enough of the terrorists – and by that I also mean the Neanderthal pukes who are terrorizing their own people into submission -then the elusive moderates may surface and work on that much needed reform.
That’s pretty arrogant. They have been denied free will, human rights, women’s rights by the thugs with the guns. They aren’t going to suddenly become Amercanized overnight, it’s going to take time and probably a generation or two. They need to know that we aren’t going to abandon them though, and from what they’ve been hearing from the Dems and increasing numbers of Republicans, they aren’t so sure.
It’s sad really, that the fate of so many people is at the mercy of US politics…

Sorta O/T: Dubya just said Israel needs to support a Pali state for demographic reasons, in other words, arabs need a place to call home so that the Jews can keep their own country with it’s own culture. Hmmmmm … really? But America can’t do the same, El Presidente?

You really need to put the crack pipe down and back slowly away from it…And I say that in a kind, loving and respectful way. Seriously though, according to Islam Mohammad (pig piss be upon him) was perfect, every single word that he spoke was perfectly and exactly what Allah wanted him to say. So you cannot extirpate the violent verses from the Koran without becoming an apostate or worse.
To extirpate a single verse from the Koran would be to explicitly admit that Mohammad (pig piss be upon him)was not perfect and that Islam was not the true path to perfection.

It sounds scary in words but in practice it’s not. This has been tried by the best snipers during WWII, the Germans. They had little success at it other than to slow us down for a tick. Your field of vision is is extremely limited and not very effective. Someone has to stumble past your view in order for you get a shot off. Also, there are other ways to find snipers and detect them. One of the best ways is to bring your own snipers to flush them out. Also we have field deployable sniper acoustics tracking for some units. Once a sniper is located a tank shell usually quiets things down quickly.

From Yon’s dispatch. This is a portion where he is drawing an analogy to Iraq being a severly injured patient and the Americans attempting to be a trauma doctor.
This latest dispatch from Michael has a much more darker tone and he refers to himself in the third person a lot. The tone is just disturbing to me.

O/T again (sorry, but where else to put it? And the border IS part of the War on Terror): Illegal immigrants are setting fires to distract border agents and sneak into the country. When will enough be enough? They trash the environment, they shoot at cops, they bring in guns and drugs and now they set fires. You libs out there, you claim to care about the enviroment, at what point have these illegals crossed the line? (pun intended).
csdeven, I hope ya get it man, it’s a great book, every America loving conservative will love it. I couldn’t put it down, blew through it in two days. It’ll make a great movie but I doubt anybody in Leftywood is interested in a story about a real American and how many Talibs he killed.
Tony737 on June 19, 2007 at 11:10 AM
This REALLY bothers me:
What is that about? Yeah, I’m glad to know that the operation is underway but don’t ya think there might be a reason you haven’t been cleared to talk about it yet you bone head! SHUTUP and wait for your clearance…we(the Hawks) can wait for our red meat and they(the barbarians and the Dems) don’t need the ammunition.
Pilgrim on June 19, 2007 at 11:15 AM
No they haven’t. Profitsbeard is 100% correct, and he’s just echoing what Robert Spencer wrote in several of his books, most notably The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam. I strongly encourage you to read this book to understand why no Arab country will ever succeed. Once the Arabs ran out of dhimmis to do their thinking for them (it took several centuries) their civilization became the backwater you see now. The only thing that keeps them afloat is their oil money and the dhimmis they import from India and the Phillipines, and the inferior (according to them) Asian Muslims from Pakistan. You really should study Islam before you make pronouncements like that.
PRCalDude on June 19, 2007 at 11:17 AM
I think that Gen. Petraeus has said game on. Perhaps he is using the political chatter over the war in Washington as cover to launch this combined offensive, which appears to be the biggest combined operation since the occupation began. Also, the surge in troop strength was well publicized and there’s been a lot of news about how “almost” all the troops are in place now. Al-Qaida may have thought that the major coalition offensive would not begin until all the US troops were there. Because of staggered rotations Petraeus may have enough troops for an offensive now.
I think the MSM is missing this story almost completely. While they are covering the operation in Diyala, I don’t think they realize what is going on. They are missing the big picture. In addition to the assault on the AQ stronghold in Baquba (the coalition has announced that the city is surrounded now, cutting AQ off from escape) there are major coalition operations around the country, in Baghdad, in the belt around the city, and in the south where US forces are working with the Brits.

Well at this point in our history we can’t very well abandon them…we made our bed…no we have to lie in it. May our boys crush these brutal men without malice, but without quarter.
They don’t deserve either since they ceased to exist as human beings long ago.
tomas on June 19, 2007 at 11:24 AM
Let’s take baby steps shall we. First we need to get them to act like members of the human race. After reading the story of the orphanage recently found inside of Iraq by our soldiers I would say that is still a long way off. Watching the Paleos throwing each other off the rooftops, and kiddies shows encouraging suicide bombings with Mickey Mouse as a spokesman and stoning to death 17 year old girls for dating the wrong guy and issuing death threats with real teeth against authors I would say that is still one or two evolutionary stages away.
LakeRuins on June 19, 2007 at 11:24 AM
I haven’t seen any senators or anyone else on TV showing support for our troops and president in any organized way. You would think they would take the time to do so.
tomas on June 19, 2007 at 11:28 AM
We would have to wipe out many, many more of them than we are now. We would have to flatten several of their cities before they got the point. No one in this administration or in the Senate has the stomach for that.
We made our bed in terms of allowing the rise of Iran’s supremacy because we got rid of Saddam, but we’re not making these fools kill one another. I wash my hands of that responsibility.
PRCalDude on June 19, 2007 at 11:34 AM

I’m not so sure about that. They pretty much had gone away. Even the Ottoman empire had abolished the caliphate. It wasn’t until they got money in large amounts that they became a problem, and groups like the Muslim Brotherhood coincidentally started arising about that time. Muslims are a perpetually backward people. They can’t make it without money and dhimmis.

You can’t remove oil from the equation. It’s the reason their culture is so screwed up. The oil has sat under their feets for many centuries. If it was not for American culture, there would never be a use for oil. If it wasn’t for America, there would be no way to get it out of the ground, No automobile industry, no big cities with bright lights. The Father of Howard Hughes used his tool making genius to figure out a drill bit to dig through hard rock. It created the wealth for his son to create, things that effect almost every human on the planet. High altitude flight, satellite tv, the Microwave via Raytheon, The Moon Landing via his ground radar and guidance systems, All from the need for oil.
The problem with our culture is that we allowed them to claim all this as their own when Saudi Arabia Nationalized the Industry and seized all of our technology to State Control. We did not defend it and decided to just pay. So we paid. As long as we keep apologizing to the world for out of some backwards or strange guilt for our achievements then we will continue to have wars. Oil is the issue. We must stop apologizing for it.
I don’t look forward to giving up my car for a bicycle anytime soon so the rest of the world can have their welfare check of oil barrels delivered to the undeserving. If their societies are no better than how come they didn’t create what we have. They had the oil. Oh, they didn’t have freedom or private property. This is what the world wants from us.

I would disagree with you as to Afghanistan. Minus some Pashto/cross-border tribal loyalties, the Talib were quite enough for most Afghans. I only made it to 5 provinces, but in everyone of them, they were ready to join, um…about the very early 20th Century or so. Heck, we had mullahs bellowing at people to respect the Americans because we were building a school in Jafarkhel (yes, even girls got to use it) and thus we had given the people a gift the same as God had given Adam – learning, that which rose Adam above the beasts.
There were plenty of tokenly observant, as well as devout Muslims where I went. They just wanted to be left the Hell alone to raise their families, educate their kids, rebuild and make a buck or two. A lot still were too darn primitive about women, but even the old timers were sounding like old timers here (”kids these days…”).
I realize you may have drawn a distinction, somewhat, by pointing to Arab cultrue more than any of Central Asia, but I would not be as pessimistic that the Talib or HIG are going to whip up anything other than antipathy or hatred. Without their Pak handlers and Saudi paymasters, they have no appeal.
I see more wrangling between Karzai and the Wolelsi Jirga and Meshrano Jirga about COnstitutionality of Cabinet appointments, etc., than I see beheadings and proclaimations about beard length.
