Shock: House passes Tancredo measure to deny emergency funds to sanctuary cities

He’s offered similar proposals at least seven times in the past three years and they’ve always failed by big margins. Today? 234-189, with no fewer than 49 Democrats voting in favor. The Rocky Mountain News says all sides are “stunned”; his own press release describes him as “exuberant.” Not necessarily because he thinks the Senate’s going to pass this but because of a certain Larger Truth that might just have materialized. From the RMN:
Tancredo said he thinks his amendment is an indicator that the House would crush the reform plan [i.e., amnesty bill] if it passes in the Senate.
“If I were (Speaker of the House) Nancy Pelosi, I’d be asking if she could pass a vote on amnesty on the House side,” Tancredo said. “If she lost 50 Democrats on this one, and she says she needs 70 Republicans to pass the immigration plan, this is an interesting indicator of things coming down the pike, and that the times, they are a-changing.”
Follow the first link and read Noam’s post. Exit question: Did Tancredo just slay the dragon?

Finally, some good news.
robblefarian on June 15, 2007 at 3:43 PM
If he killed this bill dead for good with this, I hope you never rip on ol’ Tanc again Allah. You might owe him that, even with the NAU craziness.
Bad Candy on June 15, 2007 at 3:47 PM
Wow….
Now lets keep adding in the stuff we want. Criminal illegals should never be allowed citizenship. EVER!
We need more of this now, not later.
msipes on June 15, 2007 at 3:47 PM
I’m tell’n ya a God beam coming down on Tom’s head would do that pic some good.
This is fantastic news at a time when we can sure use it.
Speakup on June 15, 2007 at 3:48 PM
Lets see where this leads, it could be a good thing but I’m not ready to start cheering just yet.

I am with dorian. Odds this would pass the senate???? Anyone???

YES!
Shay on June 15, 2007 at 3:49 PM
With public opinion being as strong as it is against the bill I always wondered why it was considered a sure bet that it would pass the House. They might as well hand out pink slips to the majority of Representatives that vote for it.

Did he slay the dragon or is this a bone for us to chew on while they ram through Frankenamnisty?

This is exactly what I needed after the prayer breakfast and Bush’s love for big-hearted Ted.
Alex K on June 15, 2007 at 3:51 PM
That’s kinda the point db, if they can’t rectify the House and Senate bills, it’ll fail again. And I have a real hard time believing that the Senate’ll agree to that one. I agree with dorian that we can’t get too excited, but we need to take victories where we can. I still love that Tanc pic.
Bad Candy on June 15, 2007 at 3:52 PM
It’s been dark and gloomy all day…and then a ray of light appeared.
KelliD on June 15, 2007 at 3:52 PM
I’m more interested in the fact that it does seem that the House is not as open borders as the Senate. It gives me hope that they’ll kill the amnesty bill.
amerpundit on June 15, 2007 at 3:54 PM
Holy COW! This IS extraordinary! I was thinking all day about the House after hearing this shamnesty is a done-deal in the Senate. I had HOPED a little that the House could at least drag it out but now…WOW!! Talk about sending a MESSAGE!
YAHOOOOOOOOOO Tancredo!
labwrs on June 15, 2007 at 3:54 PM
Holy Cow, something good happened! I’m in shock! Go Tancredo and Congresspeople, even Dems apparently!!
hollygolightly on June 15, 2007 at 3:54 PM
A step in the right direction.
Altura Ct. on June 15, 2007 at 3:55 PM
Not on Tanc’s part, he’s about militant on the illegal immigration issue. The others its hard to tell.
I kinda echo See-Dub’s sentiments, !?!?!?!?! Indeed. Why would they agree to that given how they’ve resisted passing that sort of thing so many times before?
Of course the flipside of that is enforcement, and we all know how the gov’t is on actually enforcing the laws the swear they’ll uphold. So maybe this isn’t a shamnesty destroyer, because the rodents that wanna pass this know it just won’t be enforced.
Bad Candy on June 15, 2007 at 3:56 PM
One thing is for sure: we can’t allow any notion of the Senate bill failing in the House as a result of this Tancredo bill, reduce the force we bring in stopping the Senate bill for receiving cloture. This is still, however, a nice change.
Weight of Glory on June 15, 2007 at 3:56 PM

Is this a revolt of the Blue Dogs?
Slublog on June 15, 2007 at 3:58 PM
Ka-freakin’-BOOM!!!!!
That is a huge shot over the bow of the (not so) good ship Senate. If they don’t debate or pass this it’s really going to undermine further their already questionable sincerity with regard to border enforcement.
Plus, the other implications noted, that the house may just torpedo this thing regardless is a good sign.
Say whatever else you will about Tancredo, but he’s definitely gotten it done in this situation.
thirteen28 on June 15, 2007 at 3:58 PM
The House reps have to face the voters every 2 years, so they are not insulated from the voters like the Senators.
Stormy70 on June 15, 2007 at 3:58 PM
And the people spoke and the Hill listened. This is truly amazing, we ‘bigots’ got em on the run!
Limerick on June 15, 2007 at 3:59 PM
Given that the House is up for re-election every two years, they are probably shaking in their shoes at the prospect of having to vote on Shamnesty. This message may be an attempt to head it off without an actual vote.
Laura on June 15, 2007 at 4:01 PM
Thinking about this for a second: it still has to be approved by the Senate, so, well, enjoy it for now because that won’t happen.
Sorry to be an Allahpundit about this.
see-dubya on June 15, 2007 at 4:01 PM
As a reactionary racist xenophobe who doesn’t want what’s right for America, I’m unsure how to feel about this!
Citizen Duck on June 15, 2007 at 4:02 PM
Yeahm, the point here is not that they’re going to pass this. The point is that it shows strong hardline support among Blue Dog Democrats, which bodes very, very ill for the amnesty bill even if it ekes through the Senate.
Allahpundit on June 15, 2007 at 4:03 PM
Tancredo lands one in the kissers of big business’ lackies, democratic voting smugglers, mexican revanchists, and our stammering idiot-in-chief.
Now give’em your left, Tom.
dhimwit on June 15, 2007 at 4:04 PM
I’ve been meaning to ask, AP…do you call that pic ‘Tancsalot?’
It would be eminently appropriate with this news.
James on June 15, 2007 at 4:04 PM
Maybe we’re seeing a turnaround, but don’t stop the pressure. The tools in DC’ll screw us the second we get careless.
Bad Candy on June 15, 2007 at 4:04 PM
Ah, but therein lies the beauty of this move – for the senate to do anything other than approve this measure undermines whatever sincerity they have on enforcing immigrations laws at precisely the time they most need to demonstrate it.
Couple that with the signal it sends about their chances of getting their precious amnesty through the House and you have an absolutely brilliant tactical move here.
thirteen28 on June 15, 2007 at 4:04 PM
Woohoo!
KSgop on June 15, 2007 at 4:05 PM
Because they’re so freaking scared the Senate bill could make it to them for a vote, thus requiring them to cast a vote. And if there’s anything that scares them it’s voting.

Allahpundit on June 15, 2007 at 4:03 PM
Damn if that happens then there surely will be no pictures of you with your nose cut off to spite your face…

Well I see my good little Dimmie representative voted Nay. He is such a tool of the Democrat party. He is there thanks to the wonder of redistricting in GA. Oh that would be Rep David Scott D-GA.
He has never once voted against what his party leaders say. C’mon people wake up and quit sending yes men to Washington.
LakeRuins on June 15, 2007 at 4:08 PM
The winning formula is easy, if done sequentially. We need separate bills, in sequence, for:
1. Shoring up the border with a real fence
2. Allowing funds to expand the border patrol force and to deploy the national guard to the border
3. Apply extra, high income taxes and automatically double (or triple) fines for civil violations on illegals, including mandatory minimum fines (to sour the milk on their being here)
4. Mandatory immediate deportation for criminals or repeat civil violators, even if that means their abandoning their property
5. Provide funds to relocate illegals to their home countries, including funds for the children they had here
6. Provide for a real work visa system with tamper-resistant ID cards
7. Making it impossible for foreign criminals to be allowed Visa or citizenship, and to make it a felony to enter the US illegally after 2020
Taking these steps would do the trick, and we’d still be less strict than just about any other country on the planet (including Mexico).
stonemeister on June 15, 2007 at 4:10 PM
Good thing that reps have to run every 2 years. Nancy won’t bring that amnesty-dog up for a vote, unless she’s dead sure that it’ll pass.
Mr. Tancredo has balls for standing up to the establishment, unconditionally.
We need someone like Rudy or Fred to stand up and speak to the country, regardless of political registration and invite smaller steps, one-by-one: security, sorting out the criminals from the non-, databases for legal employment, punishment of law-breachers…and kill the beast now. One of them, or both, can do it, if they sincerely believe it is a dog, and they want popular support.
Leadership now! This is the moment. Even if the Senate passes it, it will long not come up or be voted for in the House. The senators don’t feel the knife because so few are up for re-election in ‘08 and because some are erroneously counting on partisan dummies, as they did in the past. That party is OVAH!
Entelechy on June 15, 2007 at 4:12 PM
We owe this man. We owe him less disdain and more praise. We say he’s Don Quixote tilting at windmills, but who is really delusional? Not him, I think.
Yes, the Senate will not support this amendment, but that doesn’t mean defeat. It means that the bill cannot be compromised by the houses in its present form, and is now far more unlikely to reach the oval office, where El Presidente is waiting with bated breath to sign it into law.
Heck, Tanc get himself any more disinvited from the White House, he has nothing to lose.

PRCalDude on June 15, 2007 at 4:15 PM
I’ll raise my glass to that. Brilliant tactical move by Tanc. Though he gets blasted by some as “militant” he still has their best interests at heart. Cheers.

AP, you ought to put a crown on Tanc’s head in that pic, at least for a day.

Let’s kill the bill in the Senate! Hoping the House kills the bill would be a prevent defense and we all know how well that defense works out!

Limerick, we’ve got to keep the troops cheery, during these depressing times. I, for one, am loving this storm. It’s the best that could have happened to the elephants. They’re slow to learn, and then when they do, they can’t let go of ideas, even if they surpass them. But, they feel the pain the same as the little donkeys :)
p.s. there is absolutely nothing wrong with flowershops – all the best to you, your lovely lady, son, who keeps us free and safe, and all you love. Regards,

lorien1973 on June 15, 2007 at 4:21 PM
Absolutely. As encouraging as this development is, we need to keep the pressure on the senate. In fact, in light of this development, I’d say we need to ratchet the pressure up even more.
thirteen28 on June 15, 2007 at 4:22 PM
I think my Senators have me on their call blocking list. Or at least they are trying to get me added to that Do Not Call list
LakeRuins on June 15, 2007 at 4:22 PM
Viking, of course. The Senate pays attention to the House. We shouldn’t let them off the hook now. This will give them something to think about, hopefully, too.
Entelechy on June 15, 2007 at 4:24 PM
So, Portland, Maine will not get emergency funds for, say, storm damage? Earthquake damage? Is that what this bill would do if passed and signed by the president? Is it like: cities won’t cooperate with the federal government on immigration so the federal government won’t pay for any kind of FEMA support? Something like colleges who don’t allow recruiters won’t get federal R&D money?
If that’s what this is, I love it. How about sanctuary states? Maine governor Baldacci ordered state employees not to ask about immigration status when processing welfare applications or anything else.
Tom McLaughlin on June 15, 2007 at 4:24 PM
meh… threatening emergency funds being denied to any city is pretty pointless. If citizens are suffering, the Fed’s can’t deny helping the suffering, including with sorely needed funding. And if they did… it’s unthinkable. It’s got to be mostly a symbolic gesture, unless I’m missing something in that huge bill.
I’m thinking it’s a trade-off deal. Tancredo and/or the Republicans behind the measure had to have given up something to flip so many Democraps after so many crushing defeats with previous attempts. Did they flip the Republicans needed to pass a revised version of the Shamnesty Bill in trade for this mostly symbolic amendment? Would Tancredo be kept in the dark on that aspect? It appears he had ‘None’ Cosponsors on his amendment(s).
The question in my mind is; What did they trade/give away to finally pass this measure?

If this ever became law can you imagine the budget surplus it would create? Getting the welfare cities off of the federal dole, i.e, my tax dollars.
LakeRuins on June 15, 2007 at 4:28 PM
Thank you Tancanator! Even if this amendment doesn’t necessarily relate directly to the POS amnesty bill, it’s a good sign that house Republicans haven’t succumbed to the degree of douchebaggery that the likes of Lott, McCain, Kyl, Rove and Bush have.
I agree that their realization that many of them would face an angry voting populace in 2008 might just make them think twice about joining in on the Senate’s Russian Roulette session.
Hollowpoint on June 15, 2007 at 4:30 PM
Might be just that. A way for the house dems to take the heat off of Shamnesty.
HOWEVER… should shamnesty pass, this bill becomes moot because sanctuary cities would no longer have anything to offer sanctuary from.

Allah, not to get too far ahead of myself, but on the strategic side of things: isn’t this House vote a whole bunch of chickens coming home to roost for the lefties?
If I am to belief the pundits, the GOP lost control of both houses in ‘06 because a bunch of Dems ran to the right of us on illegal aliens and national defense. Voila — maybe Frau Pelosi has zero chance of holding up her end of the deal on amnesty, as you noted.
How effing great would that be…
